How’s Your Primary Research Coming Along?

Quantitative & Qualitative. Questionnaires, Interviews & Surveys

How are you doing? Have you been asking questions, and more importantly recording your research?

Page 7: Unit 3: Research - Secondary Research

Secondary Research

• What is it?• Why bother?• How can it help you in your studies?

Page 8: Unit 3: Research - Secondary Research

• Reviews• Blogs• Gamelogs• Archives

Secondary Research

Review

• Overview• Experience• Mostly qualitative (unless succeeded by ratings)• Unknown author or reviewer

Secondary Research

Page 10: Unit 3: Research - Secondary Research

Archives

• Variety• Rationale• Multitude of sources• Usually used in massive research

FACT: The 2008 re-make of Ultimate’s JetPac by RARE involved a lot of retro stats and archived research into the original game

Gears of War

Primary Research Secondary Research

I asked 7 questions about the game to 10 people

I read 10 reviews of the game which were written shortly after release (Qualitative)

I did an online survey I read and recorded rating from 10 reviews (Quantitative)

I conducted a focus group with set questions to 7 people which I then recorded on camera

I watch the online developer’s video blog on the game in order to understand some of the research that they had undertook

Quantitative Research

• Numbers – “100 people were asked…”• Percentages – “40% of RPG games are…”• Fractions – “1/4 of all FPS games have…”• Decimals – “3.25 hours of gameplay is…”

Page 13: Unit 3: Research - Secondary Research

Qualitative

• Feelings – “I felt that this was…”• Experiences – “When I got to the first checkpoint, I…”• Aspirations / Hopes – “I wanted it to go on longer…”• Expectations – “It was much better than I thought.”

Remember!• Secondary research is where YOU read the existing research and record the answers for YOUR needs. Copying existing research without showing sources of reference won’t help you with forthcoming assignments (or this one)• Take small steps. Don’t look for mammoth evidence and you won’t be bamboozled by the answer• Planning is everything. Think about what you will do at every stage of research and pre-production.
