UBERGANG

Palazzi, in collaboration with FUA Florence University of
the Arts, presents a photography exhibition that will be
inaugurated on April 17th at 6:30pm and will last until April
24th.
Transition is a part of the journey, a stage, of the young
photograper. A stage wherein he understands self and
expresses it fully in his work. There are so many ways of
perceiving ones surroundings, some very complex, but
importantly is the sensitivity to recognize and overcome
that which limits and blocks perception. Alessandro has
entered a tunnel ever narrower and fear manifests itself in
the confrontation with all that might be labeled different.
he has begun a change of self and his relation to others.
he is exploring the richness that mankind can show in
images and the diversity of in the change of aspect and
perhaps identity. he lingered , he looked and then he went
ahead and created images through the lense and through
his mind. he now demonstrates fully his capacity to collect
life’s moments fresh and free.
everybody is trying to find a way of expressing themselves.
You may not consider changes i am going through from
academics to photographer to be similar to those that
occur to my subjects, but we all try to express ourselves
for who we are. i am expressing myself as honestly as i
can. That has to do with becoming one self , an approach
to self expression which both my subjects and i are going
through.
Throughout my experience of different from, i found that
even with changes we can never escape who we truly are.
We all strive for stability. We balance stability and
instability, the stable and unstable. There is no absolute
state of stability, there is only the in between, the
balancing act of living out the self fully.
Through my projects i explore this exchange for balance
as it represents different roles ranging from images one’s
eyes sees and those the mind can imagine.
Before coming here most of you will not relate personally to the
subject matter. To catch and direct your attention you should
have some sense of anxiety and claustrophobia and then
hopefully peace of mind, hence the tunnel.
Palazzi, in collaborazione con Fua- Florence Università of
Alessandro schneider represents cultural intermingling
and change - half German, half italian, speaking German
and english at home, currently living in Florence - and his
life and studies have changed his geography several
times. Through this project, Alessandro sought to express
his own state of permanent change through young men
whose life is centred on a ritual of transition between
one person and another. The subjects of the photos vary
from firm in the black and white photos whose subject is
an almost imperceptable transformation, to the almost
dematerialized in the large color photos featuring in their
"virtual reality" a place where, if it were to exist, they
would feel at home.
Übergang stands for transition in German, and it is
composed of the words ÜBer and GAnG. Über means
"over" and Gang can be a corridor, but it also represents
a way of walking. Alessandro expresses himself in his own
way through a subject that is not easy to handle, and in a
very short time he managed to change his photographic
language from the photojournalistic to a more artistic
one: the life of a young and curious individual who finds
himself in a permanent transition...

here we enter before being confronted. We feel a slight
uneasiness. The uneasiness should grow going into and
towards the tunnel’s exit. once past the exit fear and
anxiety should be exchanged and one should feel freed
and at ease with oneself.
self expression, honest self expression, is something we
all long for consciously or subconsciously, but often fail
at for fear or obstacles both mental and social that once
overcome bring us ever closer to honest expression.
For any photographer, creating a body of work in a
determined period of time can shake the mind. it can
change the way one sees forever. The challenge is how to
create interesting and compelling photographs that serve
many purposes on many levels. As with art in general,
there is no specific recipe or approach. however, when
you scan the photography field you’ll discover some basic
“angles” that might inspire you to go beyond creating a
single photograph and come up with a body of work. A
body of work that inspires the viewers to take a second
look, ask important questions and hopefully walk away
wanting to see more. Alessandro schneider, a second
year photography student from digital imaging and Visual
Arts at Florence University of the Arts, has taken the
photographic medium and used it to walk himself through
a journey. Along the way he discovered just as much
about himself as well as his subjects - starting with an
internal concept, desire and interest, and discovering that
elements happen beyond a single layer. Alessandro was
able to transform both information and feeling into
something beautiful and respectful.
