This resulted in Freedom and Democracy Road as well as Printers Way being closed for a while. Besides the few who were forbidden to go to work, the worst knock-on effect was traf- fic along Koeberg Road and Racecourse Road. The legal march started at 10:00 and pro- ceeded along Koeberg until the singing and dancing minority turned left into Race- course towards the City Council Adminis- trative Block opposite Paddocks Shopping Centre. Local police spokesperson W/O Daphne O’Reilly confirmed with TygerBurger that there were no injuries reported and that the day proceeded relatively peacefully. During the march the protesters held post- ers aloft to clarify some of their qualms – “We demand better housing” and “Red card for Joy”. The “Joy” that protesters were referring to is ward councillor Joy McCarthy who has been trying her best to maintain peace in Joe Slovo Park and regularly responds to resi- dents’ growing complaints in the area. When she was asked how she feels about the poster directed at her she responded: “It disappoints me, knowing what I’m trying to do for the community and that I will still con- tinue doing for the community. I take it where it comes from – it’s election time, it’s silly season.” Considering the number of ANC T-shirts on show during the protest it is hardly sur- prising that McCarthy says the protest was mostly electioneering. She says the issue of housing has been a long-standing problem. “It’s a catch-22 really. Some have occupied every square inch of available land. Land that is intended for mixed-use development. So we can’t build as long as they are occupy- ing the land.” Mixed-use The City of Cape Town already has two in- terdicts against the illegal occupiers, but to date they still don’t budge. The mixed-use development plan is to build three-storey flats of which the residen- tial top two floors are located above commer- cial. The protest action, originally intended to be 3 000-strong, decreased to 1 000 when the application was lodged with the city. The broader community didn’t know what to expect after the Du Noon protests last year, when thousands of people marched down Koeberg Road. McCarthy, who keeps her ear to the ground, knew the recent protest would be more manageable. “The community of Joe Slovo are a lot qui- eter and a lot calmer than the community of Du Noon. I spoke to community leaders af- terwards and it is clear that most residents are fed up with this nonsense. Some say that others can march, as long as they are al- lowed to go to work,” she concludes. A parrot had to be given oxygen on Sundaywhen two veldt fires broke out in TableView.Thiswas just one of thememorable scenesas firefighters, ably assisted by the localneighbourhood watch, combated the fires.With the temperature soaring and thewind howling, the risk of the fires causingmayhem was a real threat, but good team-work ensured that both were extinguishedby 23:00.The first broke out just behind CheckersSandown and the second in the vlei nearGillRoad.The latter happened just behind McPher-son’s Restaurant and the adjacent nursery
and it was herewhere the parrotwas treatedfor smoke inhalation.Says Table View Neighbourhood Watch(TVNW) spokesperson, Gemma Redeling-huys: “Apparently the parrot was coughing.Don’t askmewhat a coughing parrot soundslike!”She continues: “The first fire was broughtunder control due to a swift response fromthe Fire & Rescue Teams, however the firein the vlei spread quickly and presentedmore of a challenge. Our members’ swift ac-tion in assisting the police on scene to closeroads leading to the vlei and directing traf-fic, made a huge impact on the success of theday.”Many of TVNW’s remarkable Face-book friends heeded the call for donations ofwater or food and the 200 firefighterscouldn’t ask for more.
“It was an incredible response,” confirmsRedelinghuys.“We have asked for donationsbefore with a fire last year, but it was noth-ing like this. After we fed 200 firefighters wesent three bakkie-loads of food to Silver-stream, where they had to go fight anotherfire.”Members also helped bandage the handsof firefighters who received cuts while try-ing to hack through the dense vlei.She continues: “There were multiplehouses that were threatened but a quick re-sponse from residents after a call to douseroofs and gardens, assisted in keeping theflames at bay. Fire and Rescue Servicesasked TVNW to remind residents to pleaseremember to cleanout their gutters of debrisas even just a few sparks can set debrisalight.”

Last week was one to forget for poacherswhen a large abalone bust in Atlantis wasfollowed by another in Melkbosstrand.
In Atlantis the local police and the Cityof Cape Town’s Metro police joined forcesand saw just over 18 500 abalone confiscatedwhile in Melkbosstrand the local neigh-bourhood watch saw to it that 1 174 were re-covered.
Metro police chief Wayne le Roux elabo-rates on the first incident that happenedlast week Tuesday: “The police received atip-off about an abalone processing plant inAtlantis. We assisted them in searching thepremises – a noodle factory in Neil HareRoad. On searching a back room they foundan abalone drying facility.”
The officers confiscated abalone with anestimated value ofR1,6million andarrestedfive suspects.
“Wewould like to commend themembersof the public who assist us in the fightagainst crime. Many of our breakthroughsare the result of tip-offs fromconcerned citi-zens. Abalone poaching is a big problem inSouth Africa and its link with the drugtrade is alsowell-documented,which iswhythis operation is so significant,” he con-cludes.
That sameevening the anti-poachingunit(APU) in Melkbosstrand and the ProtectedSpecies Detection K-9 unit came across fivepoachers who were diving for abalone.
Neighbourhood Watch chairperson, An-dré van der Merwe, elaborates: “The APUmembers saw five suspected poachers go-ing into the water. Just a couple of hourslater they came out and hid the poached ab-alone in the dunes. They left the abalonethere for someone to come pick it up, butwe contacted the local police who then con-fiscated it.”
Noarrestsweremade, butVanderMerwesays one of the most important ways offighting this crime is to ensure the abalonewasn’t collected.
“First prize is, of course, if we can stoppoachers from entering the water, sinceonce abalone have been removed it is virtu-ally impossible to rehabilitate these. Abalo-ne are very sensitive animals,” he contin-ues.
The APU uses various techniques and hi-tech equipment tokeeppoaching in theareadown to a minimum.
Van der Merwe says they have played ahuge part in authorities confiscating morethan 11 000 abalone in the last two years.
He adds that the most recent poacherswere very efficient inwhat theywere doing,since they could remove so many in sucha short time.
“Poachers mostly come during the nightand use underwater headlamps,” he adds.
With regards to the phase of themoon, hesays there isn’t a particular time of themonth poachers prefer.
“We can spot them easier during fullmoon, but this works both ways.”

Residents of Brooklyn, Rugby and Ys-terplaat are accusing the City of CapeTown of inefficient communication
regarding the new Spatial DevelopmentFramework.The city started the public participation
process in September last year and wentabout advertising it in a perfectly legalmanner.This process came to a conclusion two
months later.Unfortunately for themajority of commu-
nity members, they were never even awareof this process and now their objections tothe framework fall on deaf ears.Says Kyle Mason-Jones of the local resi-
dents’ association: “The framework is astrategic planning document for the citythat guides a whole lot of things. Amongother things, it indicates what the citycould do with city land such as parks andthe vlei area. Some things in the frameworkare really good, but some raise a lot of con-cern.”
DensifyMost residents are unhappywith plans to
densify Ysterplaat, and specifically aroundthe air force base, as well as building a talltower block opposite Northgate Island,whichwould itself also be built up. A raisedbridge would apparently join these twobuildings.The Brooklyn, Ysterplaat andRugbyRes-
idents’ Association (BYRRA) specificallyobjected to this proposal, becauseasMason-Jones points out, it basically benefits a pri-vate company and not the community.
In essence, residents acknowledge thatall the planned development is good for thesuburbs, but not for those who live there.Mason-Jones elaborates: “Therehas been
a lot of opposition to the proposal to buildinside the Zoar Vlei nature reserve. Thecity effectively wants to build a block offlats inside the reserve boundary, whichwould be between existing land owners andthe vlei. All those who feel their propertieshave value because of access to the vleiwould now be sitting behind three or fourstorey blocks of flats.”He adds that BYRRA supports a lot of the
proposals.
Koeberg RdThe development along Koeberg Road is,
according to BYRRA, very much needed.The plan is to make the road more pedes-
trian friendly and slow cars down.“We are certainly not opposed to the gen-
eral development of the area, but it must bedone a littlemore carefully. The frameworktakes theposition that development is need-ed, and whatever can make the area moreenticing for developersmust be done at anycost. We say development needs to beviewed as a tool which can be used to thebenefit of the community. Going into thevlei, disrupting pleasant suburbs and giv-ing away all the city-land is actually irre-sponsible. We need to be doing it a littleslower,” he states.Feedback from the community now cen-
tres around them not knowing about thepublic participation process last year.This ought to give them all more impetus
to go to the monthly BYRRA meetings, ofwhich there is one at 17:45 on Thursday atthe Brooklyn Library.

star ratingat theTourismGradingCounciland until just a few weeks ago boasted aCapeTownTourism (CTT) logo on it’sweb-site.It has since been established that the
guest house used to be a CTT member, butthe owner never renewedhismembership.

Aproposed MyCiTi feeder bus system inEdgemead and Bothasig is being modifiedand finalised for approval soon. This is ac-cording to Brett Herron, mayoral commit-tee member of transport.“A feeder system is a smaller public
transport vehicle collecting passengers ina specific area and transporting them to acollection point from where they inter-change to larger vehicles on dedicatedlanes, referred to as a trunk bus servicesor the passenger rail system,” explainsJames Vos, chairperson of the subcouncil,who has been motivating such a system inthis area.According to Vos, engineers are busy
with journey runs on the proposed feederbus in routes in Edgemead and Bothasigto streamline this proposal.“Workon the constructionof the support
infrastructure will begin later this year,once themainMyCiTi bus routes into Cen-tury City and Montague Gardens are com-pleted. The service should commence oper-ation by November 2015,” says Herron.In addition to the Edgemead and Both-
asig routes, the committee is planning aroute to serve theRichwood andBurgundyEstate area. Trunk routes to the CBD andTable View are also being planned.A broad network of routes that will con-
nectBothasig andEdgemeadwith other ar-eas such as Goodwood, Parow, Monte Vis-ta, Welgelegen, parts of Bellville and Dur-banville have also been identified by theCity of CapeTownas possible future feederbus routes.“None of these routes will be rolled out
in the current implementation phase,”Herron adds.Also on the cards is another route be-
tween the Montague Omuramba stationand theSaltRiverRail station, viaKoebergRoad and Voortrekker Road.“The feeder bus system will be a clean,
punctual and safe way of travelling at areasonable cost. This will be a major boostfor public transport...” Vos says.

W/O Siyabulela Vukubi: “Last weekTuesday at approximately 12:00 ourmembers were on vehicle patrolswhen they noticed a suspiciouswoman standing at a bus stop inVoortrekker Road. She had a blackbag in her possession. As theystopped and searched the bag theyencountered some items that weresuspected to be stolen.

TamperingMeanwhile, the next day (Wednes-
day) at about 04:40 Maitland policereceived informationabout suspectswhowere tamperingwith the gate ofa business at corners of Voortrekkerand Koeberg roads.“We responded as quickly as we
could and approached a white Toyo-ta Tazz that was about to drive off,”explains Vukubi.“As we searched the vehicle we
found housebreaking implementslike a crowbar, screwdrivers and ahammer. Suspected stolen propertysuch as polony, cheese, biltong aswell as tik lollies were also found.”All three suspects aged between 20
and 44 were arrested for attemptedhousebreaking, possession of stolengoods and possession of housebreak-ing implements.

Spice4Life.co.za, the founder ofa Non-Profit Organisation(NPO), Tembile Nyoka, is creat-ing waves of change in DuNoon.More and more people in Du
Noon are knocking on the doorofNculunduAcademyof Learn-ing and asking Nyoka for com-puter literacy training.With a few donated comput-
ers and heaps of motivation, heuses the local community cen-tre as his temporary base andteaches about 60 people to mar-ket themselves online.But how can he do this with
antique computers, an erraticvenue, severely limited fundingand a day job?Both Nyoka and his biggest
supporter, CEO ofSpice4Life.co.za, Michelle Kor-evaar, have an unwavering be-lief in his NPO.They also have the “why” to
see it blossom.He elaborates: “I grew up
without parents around me, soI had to be my father and mymother from an early stage.Now to see people standing atthe robots and trying to get jobsis difficult. Some of them arestarving... So I thought to my-self what could I do to changethe lives of others...?”While Korevaar listens to his
story tears well up in her eyes.She explains: “I also had a
time in my life where I was onmy knees. And it grows empa-
thy. There are people who care,but they just don’t know how tomake a difference. Being quietis in fact being a victim. It’s likesaying to the world that wedon’t have a solution. Havingbeen in that space, rolling upand being silent doesn’t makeany sense to anybody. We allhave a voice and we must dowhat we can right now!”If good deeds could feed off
words alone, then Nyoka andKorevaar’s statements wouldsee thewhole of DuNoon on theinternet in no time.Unfortunately there will be
perils along the way.Nyoka first came to the con-
clusion that he had to help peo-ple around him in 2011, but get-ting his NPO registered just af-ter some of his possessionswere repossessed by the bankswhen he lost his job madethings almost impossible.Hemoved to Johannesburg to
get his NPO started and after hereturned a handful of comput-ers were sponsored to him by awell-wisher.He got permission to use the
community centre in Du Noon,but before long the hard drivesof seven computerswere stolen.This left him with just four.Nyoka, having studied to be-
come a technician, fixed thesecomputers himself, but to datenone of them has an internetconnection.This essentially means he
takes learners to internet cafesandpays for their skills acquisi-tion by the hour.He asked a basic fee of R50 per
