Lee Nel (38) van Sonstraalhoogte in Dur-banville is op 26 Februarie in die hoësorg-eenheid van die Mediclinic Durbanville op-

geneem nadat hy by ’n verhewe plankbrug-gie, wat bo-oor ’n draadheining gebou is,geval en ’n rugwerwel in sy bo-rug gebreekhet.

Hy het vooroor geval toe sy fiets se wielvermoedelik op los klippe gegly het. Die reg-terkant van sy liggaam is erg beseer en hyis die volgende dag vir ’n snywond op sy kengeopereer.

Nel moes daarna op 12 Maart ’n groot rugo-perasie ondergaan, wat ’n sukses was, maartoe hy twee dae later opgestaan het vir ’n fisi-oterapie-sessie, het ’n bloedklont losgekomen ’n hartaanval veroorsaak, het sy vrou,

Cath-Mari, gesê. Sy is 35 weke swanger methul eersteling-seuntjie.

“My man was ’n baie versigtige ryer en hetveral vir ander fietryers uitgekyk Ek wil hêander ryers moet bewus wees van hoe ge-vaarlik die roete is,” het sy gesê.

Nel het die afgelope 15 jaar fiets gery,waarvan die afgelope twee jaar bergfiets. Hyhet reeds aan verskeie bergfietswedrennedeelgeneem.

“Nadat ek met baie verskillende mense ge-praat het, het hulle dit onder my aandag ge-bring dat Hoogekraal uiters gevaarlik is.”

’n Bergfietsryer van Durbanville, wat ano-niem wil bly, het in Oktober verlede jaar bydieselfde bruggie geval en sy sleutelbeen ge-breek. Hy en sy seun vermy nou dié roete,is deur sy vrou aan TygerBurger bevestig.

Volgens Nel is sy vertel dat baie fietsryersal versoek het dat die roete veiliger gemaakword, asook die bruggies.

“Die meeste bergfietsryers behoort aandie Tygerberg-bergfietsklub en betaal jaar-liks ’n fooi om op hierdie roetes te kan ry.

“Hoeveel mense moet nog seer kry en ope-rasies ondergaan voordat Hoogekraal tot die

besef gaan kom dat dit gevaarlik is?” het sygevra.

Eek van Hoogekraal het gesê daar is reedsvrywaringstekens by die ingang en waar-skuwings dat fietsryers valhelms en besker-mende fietsryklere moet dra.

Hy het erken dat daar al ’n “paar ongeluk-ke” op die roete plaasgevind het. “Ongeluk-ke gebeur op tegniese gedeeltes, maar selfsop plat gedeeltes. Daar was al selfs ryers watin die parkeergebied geval het,” het hy gesê.

“Daar is ryers wat met te veel selfvertrouery en nie versigtig genoeg is nie. Daar is ge-durig bergfietsryers wat oral en op anderroetes val,” het hy gesê.

Eek het sy medelye met die oorledene sefamlie uitgespreek. Volgens hom gaan daarin samewerking met die Tygerberg-berg-fietsklub waarskuwingtekens aangebringword om fietsryers te maan om stadiger tery. Hy het bergfietsryers ook gewaarsku omnie roetes bó hul vaardigheidsvlak aan tepak nie, of om dan stadiger te ry.

“Bergfietsry is ’n ekstreme sport, waarindie ryers tussen 20 km en 40 km per uur rymet slegs ’n valhelm as beskerming. Onge-lukkig gebeur ongelukke wél,” het hy gesê.

Verskeie pogings om Matthew Zoutendyk,voorsitter van die Tygerberg-bergfietsklub,te kontak vir kommentaar, was vrugteloos.

A 32-year-old man was arrested for the pos-session of dagga in the Fisantekraal infor-mal settlement last tuesday.

The crime prevention unit of the Durban-ville police confiscated 11,1 kg of dagga, saidLt Marchell Rhode, communication officerof the Durbanville police.

WO Ruldoph Julies of the Fisantekraalpolice station, and other members of the cri-me prevention unit arrested the accused at14:10 after they received information fromthe community that a man was dealing dag-ga in the squatter camp.

After following up on the information,they searched his premises and found stop-pe dagga, as well as bags of dagga hiddenin a cupboard in the shack which he wassuspected of selling, Rhode said.

TheDurbanville policehavewarnedmo-torists to close their windows when stop-ping at red traffic lights late at night.

This came after a robbery on Friday21 March (Human Rights Day) at about20:30 at the corner of Racecourse and StJohns roads in Durbanville.

The victim stopped at the red trafficlight when a man with short dreadlocksapproached him and demanded that hehand over his iPod, cellphone and mo-ney through his open window.

In another recent incident a car win-

dow was smashed in the same vicinity,but there was no proof of an attemptedrobbery, said Lt Col Marius Swanepoelof the Durbanville police.

Although this sort of robbery is com-mon in some areas, it hasn’t happenedin Durbanville for some time, said Swa-nepoel.

A robbery at a red traffic light also oc-curred on Langeberg Road last year.

He warned single drivers to be carefulat traffic lights.

“Always keep enough space open infront of your car to be able to get awayand keep the windows closed at night,”he said.

Robot robbery on the rise

During the last two months business premi-ses in Durbanville have been targeted atnight by criminals.

The businesses suffering the most fromthe burglaries were those situated in thetown area, Durbanville Industrial Park,Stillewater Street, Race Course Road, Bloe-mendal and Fisantekraal area, said Lt Mar-chell Rhode, communication officer for theDurbanville police.

Wednesdaysare themost prominentdaysfor these break-ins which most commonlyoccur between 16:00 and 20:00, he said.

“Criminals are forcing out windows, bre-

aking down front doors and safety gates toenter premises.

“The Durbanville police would like busi-ness owners to regularly check if theiralarms systems are working or to install ex-tra safety measures to safeguard their pre-mises,” Rhode said.

“Criminals are also targeting building si-tes and the police would like the owners ofthese construction sites to put extra securi-ty measures in place to safeguard these pre-mises by appointing security guards to pro-tect their building equipment and materi-al,” he said.

Western Cape residents have four weeks tocomment on the proposal to increase motorvehicle licence fees by 3.4%

On Friday 28 March the provincial go-vernment gazette published the draft regu-lations pertaining to motor vehicle licence(MVL) fee increases.

“Because this increase affects over 1,7million vehicle owners, I have decided onceagain that, while it is not yet required bylaw, the proposed increase should be sub-ject to a full public participation process,”said transport and public works MEC Ro-bin Carlisle last week.

Last year proposed increases of an avera-ge 5.3% were implemented in the province.

This year the proposed fee increasesamount to an average 3.4% increase for theWestern Cape, which is lower than the in-flation rate of 5.9%, recorded in February.

“During the period 2001 to 2005/06, theWestern Cape increased its licence fees dra-matically by an average of 10% over five ye-ars, which led to this province having thehighest licence fees in most classes of vehi-cles and trailers in the country,” said Car-lisle, adding that by the 2006/2007 financialyear, motor vehicle registration and licen-

ce fees in the Western Cape were on average50% higher than that of other provinces.

“In addition to the burden on ordinarymotorists, many truck owners registeredtheir vehicles in adjoining provinces wherefees were lower, thus significantly redu-cing Western Cape revenues.”

Accordingly, the province had initiallynot increased its fees since 2005 until lastyear, while other provinces have increasedtheirs during the same period.

“As a result our licence fees for sedansand light vehicles have come broadly intoline with other provinces, while our heavytare trucks and trailers are in many casessignificantly lower than neighbouring pro-vinces,” said Carlisle.

The draft regulations will be available forpublic comment for four weeks until 25April.

Proposal to increasemotor vehicle licensefees by 3.4%

Tales of how the Cape was captured by theBritish in the Battle of Blaauwberg wereshared by Dr Willem Steenkamp, renownedauthor and curator of the Chavonnes Batte-ry Museum at the V & A Waterfront.

The stories were told at the annual gene-ral meeting of the Durbanville Heritage So-ciety recently.

Steenkamp related some of the internalproblems within the VOC at the turn of1800’s, said Pam Beck, secretary of the Dur-banville Heritage Society.

“Besides facing a huge decline in theirtrade with the east and a feeling of discon-tent amongst employees of the VOC in theCape, there was the catastrophic smallpoxepidemic which decimated a large proporti-on of the population in the Cape.

“This resulted in a shortage of manpowerin the Cape of Good Hope,” she said.

Steenkamp told tales of the conflict of theNapoleonic Wars, the rivalry betweenFrance, Holland and Britain, and how theseevents all led to the final capture of the Cape

by the British at the Battle of Blaauwberg.“We were told how the loyalty and brave-

ry of all the men fighting for the VOC underLieutenant–General Janssens impressedthe British general, Sir David Baird, whonegotiated the terms of the surrender.”

Steenkamp interspersed his tales with re-corded stories and records from Swellen-dam farmers, VOC recruits and British sol-diers who survived to tell the tales.

“Willem is a natural story-teller and hisobservations and numerous anecdotes cap-tured all our attention and interest.

The executive committee of the societywas unanimously re-elected at the meeting.

A new project for the aged is beinglaunched by the KSE Care Centre forthe Aged, in Scottsville, Kraaifon-tein, on 16 April.

The ABC Project, will be aimed athelping elderly at the centre who didnot have the privilege of schooling,to write their names and addresses.

“They are very excited about thecourse. Some of them worked onfarms all their lives and some had tolook after their brothers and sisters.This opportunity will better their fo-cus on life,” says Linda Kaffer of thecentre.

Golfers of which some learnt the sport asyoung caddies at the Durbanville golf clublaunched a social golf club at the Fisante-kraal sports fields last month.

The purpose of the Fisantekraal GolfingCommunity (FGC) is not only for members’own enjoyment, but also to promote golfwithin Fisantekraal and neighbouringcommunities, said Edward Kleinhans,founder member and captain of the club.The members use the facilities of the Dur-banville golf club at a special rate.

As part of the launch, the club presentedits first community project and handed outclothes, sweets and cooldrinks to childrenin the community.

According to Kleinhans the aim is to hosta community project every month.

“We want to make sure the people of Fi-santekraal are aware of our existence andcan easily recognise and associate with our

emblem and corporate branding,” saidKleinhans.

He thanked the sponsors for making theevent possible.

He also thanked the management of Dur-banville Golf Club, in particular John Bold,for their unwavering support and goodwill.

The launch was attended by Denise Ro-binson (MP) and proportional representati-ve councillor for ward 105 of Subcouncil 7(Koeberg), Cyril Mack.

Robinson handed out clothes on behalf ofthe FGC. She praised the organisation forits members’ willingness – not only to sharetheir talents, but also in giving back to thecommunity.

Lee van den Berg, bestuurder van ver-voer-regulering by TCT, sê as deel van dieStad se omvattende geïntegreerde vervoer-stelsel is dit uiters belangrik dat skoolver-voer gereguleer word. “Duisende kindersworddaagliks tussenhulhuise en skole ver-voer en dit is belangrik dat daar na die ge-halte van hul vervoer omgesien word. Inge-volge die nuwe reëls gaan kontrakteurs,wat leerders vervoer, met die skool ’n kon-trak moet sluit en ook by die TCT moet regi-streer.

“’nAfskrif vandie ooreenkoms tussendieskool en die kontrakteur moet te alle tye indie voertuigwees. Skoolvervoer sal ookdui-

delik met ’n plakker gemerk word,” sê Vanden Berg. Elke drywer gaan ook met ’n nie-oordraagbare identifikasie-kaart toegerusword om seker te maak hy is die gemagtigdepersoon om die voertuig te bestuur.

“Ons het onlangs tydens ’n blitsoptrede’n drywer in hegtenis geneem wat om 07:00dronk was. Kan ons ons kinders in so ie-mand se hande los? Dit is belangrik dat dieaangewese persoon agter die voertuig sestuurwiel is, sodat daardie persoon verant-woordelik gehou kan word as iets gebeur.”

Ook sal drywers oog- en spesiale be-stuurstoetse moet ondergaan,” sê Van denBerg. Een van die belangrikste aspekte vandie nuwe reëls gaan wees dat veral laer-skoolleerders in hul skoolbussies vergeselword deur of ’n ouer of ’n onderwyser.

Van die nuwe reëls gaan insluit dat skool-bussies sagte sitplekke en noodhulpkissiesmoet hê. Kontrakteurs moet ook gedetail-eerde roeteplanne aan die TCT voorlê.

E ntries from junior level music stu-dents to the Hubert van der Spuy Natio-nal Music Competition are invited by

the Southern African Music Rights Organi-sation (SAMRO).

Now in its fourth year, the project buildson the strong foundation laidby theSASocie-ty of Music Teachers (SASMT) 26 years agowhen fledgling musicians competed on a na-tional basis for the first time.

The closingdate for this year’s competitionis Friday 18 April. Auditions in the main cen-tres will commence at the beginning of June.

About 60 candidates will eventually be se-lected to compete over four rounds at the Hu-go Lambrechts Auditorium in Parow, CapeTown, from 29 September to 3 October.

Candidates will compete in four catego-ries: piano, strings, woodwind & brass in-struments, and other instruments (percussi-on, recorder, classical guitar and harp), witha sub-category for developmental groups.Candidates must still be 13 (14 for develop-mental groups) at the time of the competiti-on.

This yearSouthAfricanworks are compul-sory.

“As a composer organisation, we would lo-ve to see more South African works beingperformed at this competition and othersaround the country. As we celebrate our per-formers, so too should we celebrate thosewho create uniquely South African music”,André le Roux, managing director of theSAMRO Foundation says.

Medals, prize-money totalling more thanR80 000, and other attractive prizes are at sta-ke.

According to Hilda Boonzaaier, who chairs

the SASMT Tygerberg, the competition hasa broad appeal amongst instrumentalistsacross the music spectrum at junior level.

“It offers participants the chance to distin-guish themselves within the ambit of theirown sections, and also facilitates interactionand contact between students, teachers andparents from diverse communities in SouthAfrica. The 25th winner last year, Arjen vanRenssen, happened to be a student of the firstwinner in 1989, the acclaimed cellist AnzélGerber.”

André le Roux expressed his appreciationfor the exceptional and inspiring performan-ces he witnessed during the past three com-petitions.

“SAMRO is proud to be the link betweenthe two platforms for music excellence – theSAMRO Hubert van der Spuy Competitionand the SAMRO Overseas Scholarships Com-petition, the latter now in its 53rd year.

“We feel privileged to be part of this trajec-tory of excellence in music. A number of can-didates who excelled in this competition,such as Jan Hugo, Megan-Geoffrey Prins,Avigail Bushakevitz and Jacques-Pierre Ma-lan, have also been highly successful in beingaward winners in our SAMRO OverseasScholarships competition.”

He added that SAMRO is committedthrough the SAMRO Foundation to supportprojects of excellence at many levels. On Saturday morning I re-ceived a phone call from a mansaying he was from my creditcard company, saying my cardwas about to expire.

I thought it was a courtesyreminder call from the compa-ny reminding me of its expiry.

But then he said that some-one from Nigeria wanted totake R3000 out of my accountand he wanted to confirm ifthat was genuine. Of course, itwasn’t. He then wanted tocancel the transaction, forwhich he needed the middleeight digits of my card numberbut I refused.

He warned me that he wouldthen allow the transaction togo through and if I complainedto the credit card company,they would reject the com-plaint because of my badreaction to his call.

Immediately afterwards Iphoned the company, theyconfirmed there wasn’t apending transaction and thecall I had received was a scamas I had suspected.

Let this serve as a warningto all: don’t give personalinformation. Con artists arepersuasive; that’s how theymake their living.

The Morningstar Ratepayers’ Associationplans to start a community garden in Mor-ningstar to engage the broader Mornings-tar community.

They plan to plant vegetable seeds andother seeds on Saturday 26 April as part oftheir green initiative.

They have identified an area of 100 m² atthe intersection of Pikkewyn and Kokke-wiet streets.

“We hereby request a donation of vegeta-ble seeds or plants to be planted.

“The idea is to expand our circle of influ-ence to equip the community to take owner-ship of this garden and to grow the number

of green fingers,” said Moosa Raise, chair-person of the Morningstar Ratepayers’ As-sociation.

The organisation has partnered with theDurbanville nature reserve to involve theMorningstar youth in nature conservation.

At their last gathering on 15 March, thegroup committed themselves to be “waterambassadors” to promote the conservationof water.

A Durbanville wine was named one of thetop 10 in the world at the 2014 Chardon-nay du Monde held recently in France.

The award winning wine is Durbanvil-le Hill’s 2012 Rhinofields Chardonnay.

The international panel of judges tas-ted 794 wines from 40 countries and Dur-banville Hills shares the top positionwith France, Canada, Switzerland, theCzech Republic, Australia and Spain.

Martin Moore, cellar master, says hebelieves the technique used of rolling thebarrels has contributed to the complexityof the wine.

“We follow a much gentler approachwith our Rhinofields Chardonnay and be-lieve that a Chardonnay should never beoverpowered by wood.

“To ensure a seamless integration bet-ween oak and fruit we ferment and matu-re 60% of the wine in stainless steel tanksover a 12-month period.

“The other 40% spent the same amountof time in French oak barrels. We roll the-se instead of stirring the lees in the con-ventional manner.

“We reduce contact with oxygen by nothaving to remove the bung – thereby hel-ping to preserve the wine’s delicate aro-mas and fruit flavours. The techniquehas imparted a deliciously creamy textu-re to the wine and the result is a full-bo-died wine with flavours of zesty citrus,

peaches, dried apricots, cedar, wood spi-ce and almonds,” he said.

According to the cellar’s winemaker(whites), Gunther Kellerman, the seasonbrought very little rain, making the har-vest of 2012 one of the best they’ve had inyears.

“The harvest was small, but everythingran smoothly. I remember we were quiteexcited in the cellar, anticipating thatthis particular chardonnay was going toproduce an exceptional wine, and now wehaven’t been disappointed by receivingthis award,” he said.

Zorada het in 2006 ’n Kanna-toekenningby die Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefeesontvang vir haar bydrae tot klassieke mu-

siek. Sy het al vyfCD’s uitgegee metimproviasies opkerkmusiek, waar-van die nuutste Lin-gua Laudis (Langua-ge of Praise).

In die Christeliketradisie word daar inbaie kerke op dievooraand van GoeieVrydag ’n Tenebrae-diens gehou.

Tenebrae is ’n Latynse woord wat “don-ker” of “skaduwee” beteken. Hierdie “don-kerdiens” sal bestaan uit Zorada se orrel-improvisasies van Paasmusiek.

Enigiemand is welkom om na hierdie be-sonderse musiekuitvoering te kom luister.

These two young golfers, Ayden Senger (right)and Max Orgovanyi, have been selected torepresent WP in the u.13 team. They played inthe junior ITP golf championship at Fish RiverSun from 21 to 23 March.

Luan Grobbelaar, a very talented swimmer atDurbanville Primary School, competed in the SANational Level 3 Swimming Championship atthe University of the Western Cape from 13 to17 March. He is only 11yearsold, but competedin the 12yearold age group and won nine goldand three silver medals. He also broke fiveSouth African age group records – bringing histally for the season to 11 SA age group records.He further improved two Western Provincerecords, bringing the total number of WPrecords broken for the season to 24.

Luke Beverley participated in the WesternProvince cross countrymountain bike race atWillowbridge. This wasthe first of fourevents in the WesternProvince Series on 8March. He came firstin his age group(nipper u.10), winninga gold medal.

“At the end of the day, we let thesongs write themselves.”

So says vocalist and guitaristArno Spies about his band, The Kill Heavy’smusic.

Having played in heavier bands before,Arno and fellow guitarist, Wiehann Gelden-huys, wanted to go back to the “bare neces-sities” with this album, to create music inits purest form.

The two realised that although they wereplaying distortion driven songs, they al-ways wrote music on acoustic guitars to be-gin with.

The Kill Heavy started just over a yearago as an acoustic duo. They soon realisedthat they did need a rhythm section though,so they roped in AJ Graham on bass andMorné du Preez on drums.

“I think we try to get it as raw as possible,without any type of effects,” Wiehann saysof the band’s music.

He and Arno write the songs themselves,but add that the rhythm section also put alot of input into the process. They are of theview that no one in the band is above thesongs.

Blood, sweat and tearsThe band released their debut EP titled

Invisible Spaces last year, but are planningthe release of their new album, Straight af-ter Life, at the end of the month.

The 12-track album will include reworkedversions of some of the songs on their EP,along with seven new songs recorded withTeeJay Terblanche from Coffee Stained Vi-nyl.

“It took a lot of blood, sweat and tears, butwe hope the finished product will get us onthe map,” Arno says.

While he is aware that it sounds clichédwhen artists say they write from personalexperience, Arno points out that that’s whatshapes a musician at the end of the day. TheKill Heavy’s music comes straight from theheart.

“A few years back, we all had to sort ofgive up on music for various reasons, butmusic never gave up on us,” Arno states.

He says the emotion of being back in aband and playing music again is what fuelstheir songs.

Churning out the tunesWiehann is surprised at the speed at

which the band is releasing material, butsays he’s happy with the sound.

The band has done a lot in the year theyhave been together. Besides the EP, they’vereleased a music video for their song ‘Hi-ding’, and after only two months togetherwere finalists in the Rolling Stone Rockstar-ter competition.

Local blogger ‘Gary Cool’ was so impres-sed by ‘Hiding’ that he changed his ‘singlefor the week’ feature immediately after hea-ring the song.

The music video for ‘Hiding’, which con-veys emotions of frustration and anger, wasshot by Johnny Swanepoel in what Arnocalls an “eight hour frenzy”.

Johnny was at school with them andwhen they were looking to shoot the video,they saw that he was involved in filmingwith his company Gleam Studios.

“We got together, brain stormed over afew beers and Wiehann came up for the ba-sic idea for the video,” Arno explains.

The band receives positive feedbackwherever they go and with the help of theirnew album they’ll hopefully be making aconsiderable dent in the local scene duringthe coming months.

“Watch out, we’re coming for you,” Arnojokes.

The seniors at the Durbanville Golf Club hosted their fourth Sanlam Cancer Golf Day lastFriday, raising about R60 000 in their first three golf days. On Friday they managed to raiseR35 120 for cancer research. Several items were on auction and the golfers dug deep into theirpockets for this worthy cause. The IFBB Western Province bodybuildingand fitness federation year starts on Satur-daywith theSSNCapeClas-sic at the CPUT BellvilleSouth campus.

In terms of the number ofathletes competing andspectators supporting thelocal shows, last year wasone of the best years in his-tory. This year promises toagain break record num-bers.

Kevin Schwartz, Presi-dent of IFBB Western Pro-vince, is taking the sport tonew heights with some inte-resting developments ta-king place this year, as ma-ny companies are now wan-ting to be part of this greatsuccess.

As a result the prize money for divisionand overall winners in the Battle of the Ti-tans II in June has increased substantially,as a result catching the attention of manynew competitors from across South Africa,and abroad.

The SSN Cape Classic is known as step-ping stone for newcomers to the sport, withthemen’snoviceu-75kgandover 75kgdivisi-ons, and new beach and fitness novice divisi-

ons.There has been a lot of in-

terest in the new men’s ath-letic physique division,along with more ladies be-ach bikini, fitness bikini,body fitness, fitness andphysique line-ups.

There will also be overallline-ups for the men, and forthe women’s beach bikini,fitness bikini, best men’sroutine and ms personality.

Athletes’ pre-judgingstarts at 11:00 at R80 per per-son. The main show startsat 18:00 at R120 per person.Children under 12 are char-ged R40 for pre-judging andR60 for the main show.

The main show starts at 18:00 with an ent-ry fee of R120.

Another successful Western Cape Shore An-gling Association schools mini league sea-son has come to an end.

Attendance was great, and 78 school child-ren and women from schools across the CapeTown region fished at least one event.

The schools mini league was introducedin the 2011/2012 season, and the third seasonjust came to an end with the third and finalleague event in Struisbaai on 23 March.

Although the weather didn’t play along,and the fishing was tough, PG Groenewald(6) did manage a bellman of 51cm, and ClaireCampher a sand shark of 91cm.

The first two events were held at Dwars-kersbos on the West Coast.

The league comprises three events, withthe main focus on getting school childrenand women involved in shore angling. Twoevents are held on the West Coast and one

in Struisbaai, which have safe beaches andnumerous fish.

The categories are divided into agegroups, and again into assisted and non-as-sisted. Assisted allows bait to be put on andcast for the younger anglers.

Some 78 registrations were received fromchildren across the peninsula, with 62 recor-ding fish on their cards. The winning num-ber for the first event was 20 fish and 17 fishfor the second.

During the three events, some 413 fish we-re caught by the little anglers.

The prize giving was held at Langezandtafter the event, with Stefan Engelbrecht, de-velopment officer of the WCSAA, handingall participant a certificate, as well as me-dals to the category winners.

The next mini league season starts in Oc-tober.
