    France’s Upper HouseUrges Recognition ofPalestine

     AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE | December 11

F’ house o Parliamenton Tursday urged the govern-ment to recognize Palestine as a state,

ollowing a similar and highly sym-bolic vote in the lower house.

Te Senate resolution, calling orFrench recognition o Palestine andan “immediate restarting” o peacetalks between the Palestinians andthe Israelis, passed narrowly, with

votes in avor and against.Te vote came as European

countries seek alternative ways torestart the stalled Middle East processand ollowed an unopposed motion inthe Irish Parliament to recognize Pal-estine—the ourth assembly in Europeto do so.

Lawmakers in Britain and Spainhave already passed similar motionsand Sweden has gone even urther,

O N , Pope Francis became the first pontiffin nearly years to visit the European Parliament.Pope John Paul was the last pope to address the Parlia-ment in what he described as a “special moment in thehistory o this Continent.” His ecstatic visit in came ascommunism was crumbling in Eastern Europe, providinga great opportunity or Europe to unite. Pope Francis, notso jubilant on his recent visit, delivered a somber message

to the European Parliament.“Despite a larger and stronger Union, Europe seems togive the impression o being somewhat elderly and hag-gard, eeling less and less a protagonist in a world whichrequently regards it with alooness, mistrust and even, attimes, suspicion,” the pope said.

He said that “the great ideas which once inspired Europeseem to have lost their attraction, only to be replaced bythe bureaucratic technicalities o its institutions.”

Pope Francis is disappointed at the lack o Europeaninfluence in the world. He wants Europe to become amajor contributor in world politics. Even though PopeFrancis is the first non-European pope in the last ,

years (and the first Jesuit pope), he still has grand visions

or the Continent. One o them is to dispel the EU’s“grandma” image. Te pope wants European unity thatwill lead to a vibrant, robust and orceul conglomerationo nations.

Pope Francis told the European Parliament how it couldfix the disconnect with the world. Te solution or Euro-pean sleepiness is to “recover a sense o values and mission, one oundation or which is religious conviction. A Europe

which is no longer open to the transcendent dimension olie is a Europe which risks losing its own soul.”Pope Francis’s solution is to embrace religion, specifically

Roman Catholicism. Religion has been sliding in Europe inrecent decades and the pope hopes to reverse such a trend.Te pope wants the leaders to return to their religiousroots. Pope Francis says Europeans must not orget the,-year-old history between Christianity and Europe.

Continue to watch as Pope Francis rallies Europe andthe Christian world to unite. Watch as his cries or Eu-ropean unity become louder and more leaders start totake notice. Te Catholic Church has held many empirestogether throughout history. Soon, it wil l again provide the

glue to unite a European superpower.

Kurdish orces fighting the Islamic State ….German troops have served with international orces in

Aghanistan, Bosnia and elsewhere, but only under missionswith a clear United Nations mandate or leadership.

A ew German military personnel are already innorthern Iraq training Kurdish Peshmerga fighters, butMs. Merkel’s government wants to send more than troops, according to Bild newspaper.

Under German law, any military deployment abroadrequires parliamentary approval, but this mission mayrequire more than a simple vote in the Bundestag. TeDeense Ministry ears it may require a change in the basiclaw, according to an unidentified source quoted in Bild.

Jose Janning, a senior policy ellow at the EuropeanCouncil on Foreign Relations in Berlin, said the totaldeployment was likely to be in the dozens—and a constitu-tional change was highly unlikely.

“It’s a bit o a signal, but these are not combat troops—theyare training and support troops,” he said. “You could say it’sabout being a bit more visible. As a deployment, it’s more osymbolic than a real one, and it’s probably intended as that.”

Mr. Janning added: “We’re talking about a ew dozenpeople being sent in firstly to train the Peshmergas in theweapons’ use, and secondly to get firsthand look at theirstrategy and what they’re doing.” …

When West Germany ormed new armed orces, the

Bundeswehr, in , the country placed severe constitu-tional limits on its use.

Lawyers have already raised doubts about the currenttraining mission in Iraq, and senior ministers are report-edly locked in discussions over whether an expandeddeployment would be constitutional. A change to the BasicLaw would require a two-thirds majority in the Bundestag, and a simple majority in the upper house.

Te possible new deployment comes despite equipmentshortages so severe that Ursula von der Leyen, the deenseminister, has admitted that Germany cannot even meet its commitments. …

Ms. von der Leyen has led calls or higher deense

spending and or Germany’s armed orces to take a moreproactive role in the world. Under a declaration madein September, all members are supposed to spend at least percent o national income on deense. At present, Ger-many spends just . percent.

i projections rom the CongressionalBudget Office () are accurate, thedebt load is set to soar much higher. But is there an even greater debt danger lurking?

Te national debt grew by a gargantuan billionduring . Te good news is that it’s the lowest deficitsince the economic crisis struck. Te bad news is thatthe deficit is about to get a lot worse. According to the ,the deficit will increase each year rom now through ,when it will be back at the trillion-dollar level again. Tatis the ’s baseline scenario—meaning i everything goesaccording to plan: America isn’t involved in any more wars, the economy avoids recession, the stock market doesn’t

implode, etc. I things don’t go according to plan, whichhas a history o happening, the budget deficits will be muchworse.

It is hard to picture budget deficits this big, but that iswhat we may be returning to. For context: Te U.S. national

debt took years (rom until ) to reach tril-lion. It only took the next seven years to double the cumu-lative deficits o all U.S. history. Tat in itsel should be ahuge warning sign.

On November , the day beore Tanksgiving, thereasury Department revealed that the ederal government

actually borrowed over trillion this year—not bil-lion. Te billion is just the net. It had to borrow an ad-ditional billion in new debt to pay off old debt that wascoming due. Tis too should be a warning that America’sdebt load may be becoming unsustainable.

Another sign America’s ederal debt burden may be atdangerous levels is that the debt is now greater than thesize o the economy. With a gross domestic product o. trillion, America’s debt-to- ratio comes in at astartling percent.

Historically, big debt overhangs tend to work them-selves out in traumatic ways—kind o like the renzies thatdevelop at Black Friday sales events. Tere wil l be a lot

    California Drought,Not Climate ChangeLIVESCIENCE | December 8

N swingsin the ocean, not global warm-ing, are driving Caliornia’s extreme

drought, according to a new govern-ment study.Researchers said sea surace tem-

peratures in the equatorial PacificOcean set up an atmospheric road-block off the West Coast that divertedwinter storms away rom Caliornia.Te state relies on winter rain andsnow or most o its yearly water.

Te roadblock is a persistent ridgeo high pressure that first ormed in during a La Niña event. Eventhough La Niña broke down afer the

    - winter, the western equato-rial Pacific Ocean remained a warmwater bull’s-eye, a pattern known totrigger droughts in the Southwest andCaliornia, the researchers report.

In the new study, scientists deter-mined that the high-pressure system, dubbed the “ridiculously resilientridge” by a Caliornia orecaster, con-tinued through the - winterbecause o these avorable oceantemperatures. Te pool o warm water

generates atmospheric winds thatorm patterns o high and low pres-sure (called planetary waves) that canget stuck off western North Americaas a high-pressure ridge.

Te ridge and its accompanyingdrought are opposite the conditionsthat climate models predict under

global warming, lead study authorRichard Seager, a proessor at Co-lumbia University’s Lamont-DohertyEarth Observatory in New York, said[December ] during a news briefing.Climate models project low-pressuresystems off the West Coast, withwetter winters and drier springs orcentral and northern Caliornia, hesaid. “Overall, it’s a shorter, sharperrainy season,” Seager said. …

According to the new report, whichmeasures drought by precipitation,

last winter was Caliornia’s sixth-driest since , and the state’s three-year drought is second only to thehistoric to dry spell, whichsparked Caliornia’s first big waterconservation movement.

raids. Tese American-built planes come rom the days othe shah o Iran, when the country was one o the UnitedStates’ closest allies in the region.

Now these planes fly openly in Iraqi skies, showing thatIran is moving beyond its usual tactics.

For decades now, Iran has worked rom the shadows. Itbacks Hezbollah in Lebanon and Bashar Assad’s regime in

Syria. In Yemen, the Houthis are armed by Iran. Bahrain’sriots are stoked by Iranian protesters. All across the MiddleEast, Iran’s instigating presence can be elt. But ehran hasused subteruge and proxy wars, keeping its activities quietand at arm’s length, giving itsel a degree o plausible deni-ability or its involvement.

What is happening in Iraq today is something differ-ent. Iran’s campaign in Iraq has been anything but covert.ehran has done litt le to hide that its Revolutionary GuardCorps are working alongside Iraqi soldiers. It has alsomade no bones about arming Shia militias within the na-tion. Under the guise o stemming the march o the IslamicState, Iran now wages open military missions within Iraq.

Ten there is Iran’s Gen. Qassem Suleimani. Te mys-terious general is responsible or orchestrating numerousattacks on U.S. military targets, as well as overseeing Iran’srole in Lebanon and Syria. Until recently, the man hadbeen little more than a ghost. oday, however, he is livinglarger than lie in Iraq. Suleimani has been seen leadingtroops in eastern Iraq, and has already gained a string o

victories against Islamic State orces.Following closely on Suleimani’s heels has been the

airstrikes on Islamic State targets. Put these developmentstogether and you clearly see the dramatic change in Iran’stactics. Iran is fighting in the clear light o day.

Even more remarkably, the United States has endorsedIran’s aggressive military campaign within Iraq. Secretaryo State John Kerry called Iran’s actions “positive,” say-ing that i Iran was targeting Islamic State and having animpact, it was a good thing. I Iran needed Washington’sstamp o approval, it got it.

Such an endorsement cements the effect o this policychange on the Middle East. A nation with an aggressiveoreign policy being given the nod o approval by the U.S.is certain to have an impact on other nations in the region.

Consider Saudi Arabia. Te Saudis are the key regionalcounterweight to Iran. Te two nations wage proxy warsagainst one another throughout the region. Te Saudis

are putting out fires all along their southern and easternborders as Iran stirs up unrest in neighboring nations. Nowthey are aced with Iran’s air orce operating next door inIraq.

Iran has one o the largest standing armies in the regionwith about , active personnel. It is an aggressivenation; it is the world’s number one state sponsor o terror. Its desire to dominate the region is no secret. Look at itsalready vast area o influence. It is working to establishcontrol through weakening and destabilizing other nations. Now that it has been unofficially approved to have a mili-tary presence in Iraq, what will its next rontier be?

And once there are troops in Iraq, where else will Iranlook? Will it offer military support in other unstable re-gions where other Shiites are threatened? Syria? Lebanon?Yemen? Bahrain? Tis is the threat now posed by Iran. TeIranian military is no longer fighting cloak-and-dagger—itis fighting out in the open.

Watch Iran make the most o this opportunity to growits presence in the Middle East. Iran has pushed the bound-aries o its influence, and it has received America’s endorse-ment. Watch Iran try again, pushing urther to dominatethe region. But also be aware o where this pushy oreignpolicy will lead.

Bible prophecy indicates that Iran’s policy o pushing at

other nations will not be wholeheartedly endorsed or long.Iran, as the Trumpet  has ofen pointed out, is the proph-esied king o the south. (See our article “Tree ReasonsWhy Iran Is the ‘King o the South’ o Bible Prophecy.”)In Daniel , this king is prophesied to push one too manytimes, bringing on a horriying backlash rom another ris-ing world power.

Read Trumpet  editor in chie Gerald Flurry’s article“Te Whirlwind  Prophecy,” and you will see that Iran’smilitary expansion in the region won’t go unchecked. Iranis growing bolder, changing its tactics and pushing harderthan ever. How long will this continue beore Daniel :
