When you limit your search to documents you will only get back PDF files that have been submitted by other users as books, sections of books, manuscripts,

or journal articles.






DatasetsDatasets

When you limit your search to datasets you will only get files that contain the raw data without the coding sheet.

However, you will also be able to click on the title of the resource and get the associated metadata that was inputted by the user. The current supported formats include:

What is a Project?What is a Project?

Projects, in tDAR can contain a variety of different information resources and are useful for grouping a set of related information resources (documents, datasets, images, etc.).

They carry their own project-level metadata which are inherited by the resources they contain (though their child resources can override this metadata as well). For instance, if you enter the keywords "southwest" and "pueblo" on a project, any resources belonging to that project will also be discovered by searches for the keywords "southwest" and "pueblo".

Unlike an independent resource that is not tied to any other particular resources, when you create a project you are essentially creating a folder that contains many resources (and metadata) that is related in some way (i.e. from the same study, project, or area of interest, etc.).

A project folder might contain things such as:

Documents

A document includes things like books, sections of books, manuscripts, or journal articles. Each of these types of documents has metadata that is specifically

related to that type of resource.

* tDAR, currently, only accepts PDF files when submitting this type of resource. This may change it later versions.







Coding Sheets


Coding Sheets


Coding sheets include Excel or CSV files that have information about how a user has ‘coded’ or organized his/her data. This type of resource is normally associated with the “dataset” resource.

You can either manually create a coding sheet that relates to your data in tDAR or you can upload a file.







You can either submit an ontology, tDAR only accepts OWL files currently, or create one using tools in tDAR.

An ontology is a map of the semantic relationships among a set of concepts.

In tDAR, ontologies are ordinarily hierarchical (tree-like) and represent an arbitrary number of levels of class-subclass relationships.

The lost city of Atlantis has been found and the data related to faunal, ceramics, architecture, and lithic analysis are contained in this project folder. Also, little known geographical information and the unpublished manuscripts are also available.

Now Type in a brief description of the project. This description will appear on your “projects” page and in the search results when your project is searched

There are two ways you can enter information about location in to your project metadata:

1. Using the “select a region” tool provided by

Once you have typed in the

coordinates click “locate”

term(s) that are related to your

Note: The coordinate fields will automatically populate from “Select a Region” tool when this is checked.

There are three ways you can enter information about temporal range associated with your project metadata, you can fill in as many that apply:

1. By typing in key term(s)

2. Using Calendar Date Range.

3. Using the radiocarbon Date Range associated with

your project.

There are several things you can do in this section to limit or not limit the viewing or editing of your project and any of its associated resources:

1. Select which users can edit this project.

2. Select the visibility of your project.

3. Decide whether this resource is considered confidential information. This selection will significantly limit those who can view your project folder.

Who do you want to be able to edit your project (i.e. collaborators, colleges, etc.)

Move everyone you previously selecting back to “all registered users”

Note hold down the “shift” key to select more than one person at a time.

project confidential

Click on visibility to get the drop down box. Note: if you select “private” a new selection box will appear.

3. Visibility, this will allow you to make this project invisible (private) to everyone except those with editing rights. This is useful if you do not want to make the project public until you

have completed it or to hide it until you have finished entering and uploading all of the resources associated with it. When you are finished and want it to be “public” then you can go back into

the metadata and change this setting.

4. Confidentiality, use this to make your project invisible to the general public. This will allow only

‘qualified’ users to view your project. Remember, you can make your project non-confidential, but make certain

resources within the project folder confidential (i.e. site location maps, etc).






Individual & Institutional CreditIndividual & Institutional Credit

This section of the metadata will allow you to enter the names of any individuals, agencies, companies, etc. that have had a part in this project or any associated metadata. Remember, you can enter as many individuals and institutions as you need by clicking on or .






Individual Credit: StepsIndividual Credit: Steps

1. Type in the name and email address of the individual you would like to give credit to.

2. Click on drop down box and select the role that individual played in your project. Note. You can only

select one role per individual.

1. Type in the name of the institution you would like to give credit to.

2. Click on drop down box and select the role that institution played in your project. Note. You can only

select one role per institution.

Click “Submit” to finish and

save your New Project!

Remember to review the data and make any corrections.
