Jazzy Heat

Carol Welsman says that she saw the sun when listening to the great Ella Fiitzgerald sing. She knew in every way how to capture the light of whom she admired from a young age. 

The Ontarian singer lit up the Grand Théatre with her warm presence last evening, during the first of two concerts with the Québec Symphony Orchestra. 

Lovely choice of songs among some jazz classics sung in the Swing Era by Sarah Vaughan, Peggy Lee and Ella Fitzgerald.  

Welsman, who adores singing in French, sang “ La Valse des Lilas” or “Once Upon a Summertime” as known in English by Michel Legrand; magnificant rendition with the orchestra. Then “La Mer” (Beyond the Sea) by Charles Trenet as a swing tune with the quartet; a little less well received due to the lack of support on some of the high notes. 

Otherwise, in the English repertoire, Carol Welsman reveled in songs with a more joyous theme like Cheek to Cheek or If I were a bell. She did a wonderful rendition of More than you know with her velvet tone. Black Coffee would have gone over better with less enthusiasm and more sadness. 

It was an evening to pay tribute to the late Vic Angelillo. One had to wait until the last of three movements to really feel the cohesion of the players and the orchestra. 

Carol was conducted by Stéphane Laforet. The jazz quartet provided to accompany Carol was discreet, though they seemed indifferent tot eh beautiful symphony arrangements that were happening around them. Luckily Trumpet player, Ron Di Lauro was there to add some special colors. 

 A second performance will start at 8:00 pm this evening.
