TRADITIONS AND TALES TRAVELING FOR EUROPE

1 THE ARRIVAL (6th November) Thursday the 6th of November, throughout the day our partners were arriving at

Madrid’s airport Barajas. Our partners Leikskólinn Suðurborg and Berçário e Creche Tia São arrived

at noon so they had lunch at the school and then were taken to their hotel. The Omvikdalen Kindergarden partners arrived in the evening so they went

directly to the hotel.

2 VISIT TO THE SCHOOL (7th November) Between 9:00 and 11:00 all the partners visited the school and entered into the

classrooms where there were some programmed activities. We tried to make a wide variety of activities so that our guests could have the chance to know our methodology and way of working.

0-1 YEARS OLD (Music): The smallest ones of the school had a programmed music session with the musical socks. Its objective is to stimulate their senses both tactile and listening of the babies.

1-2 YEARS OLD (Heuristic Game): One of the classrooms of this level had a heuristic game session where children could play and handle a great variety of materials to explore, manipulate, observe and act with.

1-2 YEARS OLD (Psicomotricity): The other 1-2 classroom had a Psicomotricity session to work movement and equilibrium. The children had to climb big mountains made by cushions and cloth.

2-3 YEARS OLD (English): One of the classrooms for the older children had an English class with our teacher. We were able to enjoy the great number of activities the children do and observe the learned result that our children obtain.

2-3 YEARS OLD (Baby-library): While half of the classroom was in English, the other half was in our baby-library, a very special library for our Children, where they go once a week to work different concepts Through children’s literature.

2-3 YEARS OLD (Workshop with the families): Another classroom was taking part in a family’s workshop. Once a month we invite the families to come to a workshop in the classroom and that day, they made a beautiful rainbow to decorate the classroom.

2-3 YEARS OLD (Directed activity): Another classroom of 2-3 were making their “songs book”, a very special present that they take with them at the end of the school year as a remembrance of the school and the songs they’ve learnt here… each child decorates page by page their own song book.

3 FIRST SESSION OF WORK (7th November) Alter a brief break and a coffee, all our representatives of the schools were

gathered to continue working on the Project. In this first session of work the following contents were worked:

3.1. Common elements for the educational suitcases.

The schools “Trinidad Ruiz” and “Santa Cecilia” proposed that in the suitcase

the elements included should be the pets, the flag of the country, the front page of the story and the title of the story in English and in the original language.

All the partners agreed, but the school “Berçário e Creche Tia São” propossed

that in addition to the elements the rest of the pets and the logo of the project should also be included.

Everybody agreed with the idea so later they were included when the suitcases

were being made.

3.2. Exchange of story tales and pets. Every school gave its story and its pet to the school which it is going to work with

in this fourth phase. The exchanges were made this way:

Santa Cecilia Leikskólinn Suðurborg Santa Cecilia Trinidad Ruiz Omvkdalen Kindergarden Berçário e Creche Tia São Trinidad Ruiz

“Berçário e Creche Tia São” brought a different pet which was not their original, so we agreed they would send it by post inmediately.

3.3. First’s year global evaluation.

To end up with the First session of work, we evaluated the First year of the

Project, pointing out the following points:

All the centres considered that in general the planned objectives had been reached eventhoug the participation of the families had been very little.

“Omvkdalen Kindergarden” and “Leikskólinn Suðurborg” say that for them the participation of the families it is very complicated because they are always in a rush and just leave and pick up their Children In this way it has been decided that each school will work this out according to their possibilities and circumstances.

Other “Omvkdalen Kindergarden” felt that we should work a bit more on the

daily routines of the different schools. We all agree, so we could think about any common activity to reinforce it.

The activities have been evaluated very positively, there were two important

comments about them to be considered:

• “Berçário e Creche Tia São” comments that we should organize a way to work with all the stories since there is no much time left. To make this possible the work will be organized this way:

- In the following weeks we will send our story and our pet to the countries

that don’t have it. - From now to March, each school will work all the stories that are left as

they like.

- From now on, in the visit to Norway, each school will have to take a dossier explaining how each story has been worked.

- Between March and May each school will have to work its own story using

the other schools ways of working.

- The First of June 2009, we have to send the final work we have done to the coordinator.

• “Trinidad Ruiz” and “Santa Cecilia” comment that for them it has not

been difficult the cary out the activities of the European Project, because they have included it in their daily routines (the assembly, classroom activities, baby library...).

4 A LUNCH IN THE SCHOOL (7th November) After a hard session of work, the chefs of the school prepared a lunch that we all

enjoyed in the common room.

The menu was: lentils and breaded fish, aside from fruit we also tasted some

delicious sweets that our Icelandic friend brought.

5 SUITCASES WORKSHOP (7th November) With the decisions taken during the morning session, each school made its own

suitcase.

The fabrication process was long; it took us about two hours to finish but at the

end the results were wonderful.

All the suitcases were beautiful and all the common elements were on them.

Each school took their own suitcase, now we just have to make the other four to have a copy of each story at the end of the project.

6 PRIZE GIVING AWARDS (7th November) One of the most anticipated moments of this trip was the prize giving award

ceremony of the Logo’s Contest. It took place in the Culture Hall of our town with the presence of our European partners, other participants included, the media, the staff of the schools and the municipal authorities.

First, we gave the diplomas to all the participants in the contest (the representatives of the families and the teachers).

7 DINNER WITH THE PARTNERS (7th November) To complete the day the best way possible, we invited all our partners to a very

special dinner with all the staff of the two Spanish schools. The dinner was a varied menu, a buffet… we all enjoyed that night where there

were moments for everything…

Food for all tastes Communication moments

Strange contests … and, of course, lot of fun

8 SECOND SESSION OF WORK (8th November) On Saturday morning we gathered at the school again to finish some important

matters for the development of the Project.

8.1. Common activities. Having taken into account everything agreed on the day before, each school

made some proposals about Common activities to be made in the next phase. Here are some of the activities all the partners agreed on:

Story about the pets: A joint story will be made, each pet will introduce itself

and the rest of the friends, where they live, what do they like doing, what’s the weather like in their countries, what the children like doing…

Each school will have to make a brief document introducing their own pet, it will be sent to the coordinator of the project and he will make the joint story book in English. Then each school will have the chance to translate it in their original language. Once this story book is made, it Hill be given to the families of the school (together with the corresponding pet and “My travels for Europe” power point) that can keep it two or three days at home to watch it with their children and take some pictures with the pet… The last pages of the story will be blank pages so that each family can tell us what they have done with the pet, where have they gone, put some pictures…

TRADITIONS AND TALES TRAVELING FOR EUROPE

E-mails about the daily routines: Each school will make a document about the daily routines in the centre. All the partners will send this document by e-mail to the coordinator of the project, who will be in charge to share all the documents with the rest of the partners.

E-mail about a children’s character: As in all our countries we have television

or characters from stories that children love and the same time teaches them lots of things, each school will prepare a document introducing this character that tell us why children like him/her/them so much. All the partners will e-mail this document to the coordinator of the project who will send it to the rest of the partners.

These are the three activities that have been decided to be carried out in this

phase. Aside from them, each school will contribute with activities that it considers interesting and of course we will continue working on the stories of our partners.

From these decisions on, it has been decided among all the partner the dates of

when these activities will be carried out:

8.2. Proposal of the new Project about Science. To finish, our partners from “Berçário e Creche Tia São” showed us a proposal

in order to have the chance to present another European Project about “Science”. Though an interesting Power Point projection they talked about the most

important aspects about this project.

Since is about science it would include varied activities about different matters: water, gravity…

All these aspects attract the children’s attention because they are evident in the

daily life but the children have no understanding. All the project would be organized in activities using experiments with water, about

the Earth, air, where the children would discover these things by themselves (Francisco and Sara showed some concrete examples).

TRADITIONS AND TALES TRAVELING FOR EUROPE

These are very simple activities adapted to the different levels where the Children could experiment by themselves.

Once the presentation ended our Portuguese partners told us that they need an

answer as fast as possible: they need to know who wishes to carry out this Project and if our respective European agencies will allow us.

9 VISIT TO TOLEDO (9th November) When all the work was finished, we decided to end the weekend with a trip to

Toledo. It was very interesting because it is one of the most ancient and beautiful cities of the country.

We left early in the morning from the train station in Colmenar Viejo, we arrived to Atocha and from there, we took an “AVE” to go to Toledo al 10:50 am.

When we arrived, a guide was waiting for us who stayed with us all day and showed us the most interesting things in the city. We began in the Zocodover Square, then to the Cathedral and visited a beautiful Arabic temple where there was a music recital.

Then, our guide took us to a special place to enjoy the scenery of the Tajo River.

We walked to a Franciscan Monastery that was built by the Catholic Kings.

At last, we shopped for typical presents and we went to have lunch in a very special restaurant… we had lunch outside. The menu was really good: “cochinillo”, jam, cheese, wine…

To finish the day, we walked back to the Zocodover Square (to take the bus to the train station for the return home)… after a long wait the train took us to Madrid.
