What you will learn!!

4

Who is this for?

Grades 3-5 with minimum prior knowledge of tornadoes, in the classroom.

5

How are the students going to be working?

As a class, or in small groups.

In the classroom, on the computers.

Group work, as a class, or in discussion.

6

Objectives

After the students view the PowerPoint, they will be able to recognize the causes of tornadoes, and how powerful they can be.

The students will take a quiz at the end of the PowerPoint to test their knowledge and understanding of the lesson. Students will need to score a 10 out of 10 (100%) on the quiz in order to pass.

7

Today, students, you are going to use the computers to go through a PowerPoint about tornadoes. After you complete the PowerPoint, you will then take a 10 question quiz over the material presented in the PowerPoint.

8

TORNADOES!!!!

9

Definition: A tornado is a violent, dangerous, rotating column of air that is in contact with both the surface of the earth and a cumulonimbus cloud or, in rare cases, the base of a cumulus cloud.

10

How do tornadoes form?

11

1. Air starts to rotate when the wind is at 2 different altitudes, blowing at different speeds.

2. Faster spins (rotates) make a funnel cloud.

3. The funnel cloud rotates and touches down. Rain and hail from the storm makes the funnel touch the ground.

12

How do we know how strong a tornado is?

13

A tornado is rated on a Fujita Scale, rating a tornado between F-0 to F-5 (F-0 meaning not bad, F-5 meaning very bad)

They rate based on the tornadoes wind speed as well as damage done.

14

F-0 to F-1 tornadoes

15

F-0 to F-1 tornadoes can collapse chimneys, toss mobile homes off their foundation, and have the strength to push cars off the road.

16

F-2 to F-3 tornadoes

17

Tornadoes can tear away roofs and lift and toss heavy cars.

18

F-4 to F-5 tornadoes

19

F-4 to F-5 tornadoes have the strength to pick up and carry entire buildings an entire distance, toss steal beams, and crunch cars. These tornadoes are very rare but are responsible for 2/3 of tornado deaths in the United States every year.

20

FUN FACTS AboutTornadoes!!

Now lets learn

21

They can go 300mph!

Their damage paths can be one mile wide, and up to 50 miles long.

Each year on average 1000 tornadoes occur!

We are safer in a room with no windows when a tornado occurs.

NEAT FACTS!!!!

22

Now that you have learned all about tornadoes and why they occur, you now can go home and tell your families what you should do if a tornado occurs. You can tell them why they occur and how dangerous they can be.

23

QUIZ TIME!!!

Its time to check what you have learned
