56 Urbanization has become a tool for economic

and political interests. The global impact of speculative

urbanism that is no longer in sync with financial

reality affects architecture and city planning.

64 Los Angeles has plans to revitalize the LA

Riverbed and its different facets with the help of Frank

Gehry. The city wants the river to become a place with

urban atmosphere and a high quality of life.

78 The 1960s were an era of utopian visions in

architecture and city planning. These designs still have

the capacity to inspire, but do they really still have

relevance for the pressing urban-planning challenges?

Open City – Open SpaceIn Chicago, the new Maggie Daley Park and Chicago Riverwalk

exemplify the trend for cities to build high-profile works of

landscape architecture to spur reinvestment in historic urban

cores. In this era of decreased federal and municipal funding

for such projects, private investment is increasingly called

upon. As a result, and as a range of new spaces in Chicago

demonstrate, the landscape architect has emerged as a media-

tor between commercial interests and civic responsibilities.

The Chicago Riverwalk was designed by landscape architects Sasaki Associates. They pro-

posed a 25-foot extension to be built into the river. Through its proportions and formal

structure it acknowledges Chicago’s call for a pedestrian promenade at the river’s edge.

The new cycle superhighway is elevated 5.5 meters above

ground level at its highest point. The whole structure is rest-

ing on elegant, evenly spaced white pilotis.

LIFE BETWEEN BUILDINGSCopenhagen has a new piece of bicycle infrastructure. The

so-called “Cykelslangen”, the “Bicycle Snake”, is a cycle

superhighway that increases the ease and efficiency of daily

commutes in the city. It not only marks another step in

Copenhagen’s vision of becoming an eco-metropolis, it also

allows a glimpse into the complex structure of a modern city.

The new public sauna is built on a caisson in the river.

Raised on stilts to even further elevate the space, the build-

ing is visible from various viewpoints in the harbor.

The Celebration of

Co-creationPublic Space and Bathing Culture, which currently appro-

priates an area of the derelict harbor at Frihamnen in

Gothenburg, Sweden, is more than a participation project or

an urban renewal process. Through prototyping, the city is

nurturing a transformation culture of site-specific interven-

tions, that may change city governance from the inside out.
