January 2015 promises more growth with the largest event of

its type ever staged in London.

Top Drawer and Home see further innovation for spring

and will be joined by sister show CRAFT as well as a new fl oor

devoted entirely to fashion accessories and jewellery plus a

fantastic new area devoted to new design talent.

Together the three events (Home/Top Drawer/CRAFT)

represent the largest ever event of its type in London, with an

unprecedented 1,000 hand selected exhibitors spread across

four halls and two levels.

At Top Drawer you will fi nd products that sell, from fi ve

edited product sectors (design-led Gifts, Fashion Accessories,

Childrens, Stationery & Greetings and Wellbeing) to give your

store a point of difference and be at the forefront of retail in

time for the Spring/Summer seasons.

To ensure your visit is as enjoyable as possible, we have

added lots of new bars and cafés around the venue, particularly

on level one where you will fi nd the Fashion Bar and Indigo

Lounge. We have also added a whole new programme of

high profi le talks and presentations as part of our ‘Retail

Masterclasses’ which can be found in the new Seminar

Theatre, which is also on level 1 as well as a fashion catwalk for

THE RISE OF THE DESIGNER-MAKER

As a retailer, Will Hobhouse has gained a formidable

reputation, selling famous brands from chic dining

experiences at Villandry to the cut and thrust of high

street franchises: Tie Rack, Whittards and Jack Wills

among others. Since autumn 2012, Hobhouse has

been Chairman of Heals – a department store with

a long and illustrious history of championing good

design and craftsmanship.

This latest venture seems a complete departure

from the world of mass manufacture – so how has

Hobhouse tackled retailing the handmade?

‘When I fi rst arrived at Heals,’ he says, ‘I

thought the rules were different – I came in and

expected to be taught different things, but it’s turned

out to be very much the same. So when I was at Tie

Rack, I was going to Como and looking at delicious

silks, at Whittards it was tea & coffee and here we’re

doing it on furniture, ceramics and glass.’

But how does Hobhouse reconcile hard-nosed

retailing with the selling of handmade products?

‘There are two parts to this question,’ he replies, ‘one

is story-telling, online or in the shop. We have a craft

market at Heals, once a year, so people can see what

they’re buying and why it is like it is. ‘The other part,’

he continues, ‘is pricing. If the story is correct and the

item is inherently persuasive enough of itself that’s

fi ne but if it’s not, the best person to sell it is the artist

or the craftsman’.

“GOOD DESIGN MUST ALWAYS SEEM EFFORTLESS, BUT IN TRUTH THE PROCESS IS COMPLEX”

During his career as a designer he has been

involved in the development of thousands

of innovative products, from stylish home

merchandise to advanced intelligent robotic furniture.

At present, his studio, Sebastian Conran

Associates, is collaborating on a bewildering array

of projects with many leading international partners

such as Universal Expert; a collection of innovative

home goods ranging from cookware to storage.

But also as a Designer in Residence at University

of Sheffi eld, Sebastian is exploring the limits of

technology by ‘designing for our future selves’ in the

areas of advanced additive manufacturing; accessible

robotics and smart homes that “enhance the

experience of later life”.

An advocate of democratic design, his creations

are made all over the world, but his work displays a

sort of playful pragmatism, whilst remaining timeless

and elegant. Conran’s equation for success is quite

straightforward: aim to create real value at every level

of the innovation journey. His 3F [Form Follows

Fabrication] approach is to keep the user in front of

mind and ensure that all challenges are met with

elegantly simple solutions.

But how can you be a universal expert designer

and keep it consequential, original and aspirational

whilst being affordable? This is the challenge that

faces all leading designers across the world, whether

in the brand, digital, fashion or engineering industries.

Gill Wilson: Paperworks

Gill Wilson uses a combination of traditional Japanese papermakingtechniques and unique processes, to produce large, complex organic

wall pieces. The work is intended for architectural spaces and interiordesign projects for both domestic and commercial clients. The fibre

pulp can be smooth or richly textured and dyed to any colour or hue,providing the most subtle graduations and tonal variation. Artwork

can be produced to any scale or dimension

Over the past 10 years she has created work for clients in the UK,France, Germany, Spain, Greece, the Middle East and Japan. She is

passionate about the creative potential of plant fibre pulps, which sheuses exclusively in her work, making each piece of work unique.
