PRESIDENT’SMESSAGE

Filling the big shoes of my predecessor, Mr Michael Moorthy who has helmed BB Asia since its inception in 2003 was a monumental challenge for me. Nevertheless, the Gospel reminded me in Zechariah 4:6 ‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ saith the Lord of hosts (KJV) that I am to continue the good work done by my predecessor in BB Asia. BB Asia celebrated its 10th year in 2013 and we are reminded by His ever faithfulness throughout the last 10 years, leading and guiding us as we faced many exciting challenges developing the BB work in Asia.

BB in Asia is growing steadily and we are delighted that we have breached the 35,000 members mark. 2013 and 2014 was a year we saw significant growth in Indonesia and Philippines.

BB Philippines whom we pioneered in January 2010 was successfully incorporated with the Philippines government authority and subsequently accepted in to the family as full-member country of BB Asia at the end of 2012.

On 5-9 November 2013 one hundred officers participated in the first ever held International Brigade School in Singapore. The BB Asia also celebrated its 10 years anniversary with a Thanksgiving Service on 9 November 2013 at Prinsep Street Presbyterian Church, Singapore. I would like to thank all our institutional and individual supporters for their generous contribution towards the expenses of our ministry.

10 11ANNUAL REPORT 2013-2014ANNUAL REPORT 2013-2014

BB Asia membership stands at 8 member countries with 35,051 members.

There has been a steady increase in membership in BB Asia since 2006, the year we started compiling our membership statistics.

Over the past years focus was on strengthening member countries like Indonesia where we saw new companies started particularly in Jawa island. Pioneering work in the Philippines started in January 2010 and we are glad to note that BB Philippines was registered in 2012 and subsequently became the latest addition to the BB Asia family as full-member on 29 December 2012.

I am pleased to present this annual report of BB Asia for the period 2013-2014.

BB Asia was formed because some of us were burdened that The Boys’ Brigade did not have an international organisation, and that no one body was concerned with extending the BB. To be sure, there was a World Conference of The Boys’ Brigade established in 1963. However, in 1976, a decision was made to admit the kindred organisations in Denmark, Sweden, Finland and the USA as full-members. Consequently, the essence of World Conference underwent a radical change – it did not see itself as strictly Boys’ Brigade. In 2002, this World Conference had its name changed to Global Fellowship of Christian Youth to reflect its diverse nature. Actually the 1976 decision had already nearly obliterated the international character of The Boys’ Brigade.

Since its inception in 2003, BB Asia has sought to restore the international character of The Boys’ Brigade everywhere. It had also taken responsibility for the extension and growth of the BB movement in Asia.

There is much still to do but as of now BB Asia can celebrate the following achievements:

•BB companies have been started in Macau, Philippines and Cambodia•BBworkinIndonesiaandThailandhavebeenstrengthened•Overallincreaseinmembershipacrosstheregion•Twofull-timestaffhavebeenappointed•The production of BB Asia newsletter and development of a website•ThegrowthofBBAsiaFacebookwithmorethan6000members•ThesuccessofprogrammesuchasBBAsiaAcademy,Adventure, Officers Fellowship and International Brigade School•SettingupofPatron’sCircle•Incorporation of BB Asia with the Singapore government as a Company Limited under Guarantee

During the period under review, we have explored possibilities of developing the BB in the following territories: India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and mainland China. Staff resources were made available to Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, Cambodia and Macau in the area of training.

In the years ahead, BB Asia should continue to focus on extending the BB and apply its resources to developing and strengthening local leadership. It should also build up its financial reserves and improve on its corporate governance. Last but not least, it must ensure leadership renewal.

Since 2006, the BB in Jawa Island has spread very quickly. Today we have BB companies in the major cities of Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, Semarang, Malang and Solo. Due to the rapid expansion work, the BB in Indonesia had engaged 2 full-time staff to provide follow-up, training and co-ordination in Sumatra Island and Jawa Island.

REGIONALEXTENSION

The Executive Committee 2013-2014 met four times in 2013 and 2014. All four (4) meetings register more than 90% attendance.

3-YEAR DEVELOPMENT PLAN FOR 2013-2015It was at the 1st Executive Meeting on 2 March 2013 that the committee formulated a new 3-year development plan.

Among the focus for implementation the newly formulated strategic plan for the next 3 years were:

EXTENSIONto new territories with the focus on China, India, Myanmar and Sri Lanka.

STRENGTHENING of emerging BB countries through training and the BB Asia brand.

STAFFINGRealising of the rapid growth in this region, the BB Asia Executive agreed to actively look for a second full time staff. Mr Ho Hee Mang a former captain of 2nd Kota Kinabalu Company (Malaysia) was employed on 1 May 2014 as Training & Development Executive.

PHILIPPINESWe are glad to announce that the Philippines extension that was started in January 2010 was officially weaned off from BB Asia responsibility on scheduled in December 2013. The locally elected BB Philippine leadership has taken charge to chart out the future growth of the ministry beginning from 2014. Nevertheless, BB Asia will still continue to provide whatever support and guidance to maintain the growth momentum in the BB work in Philippines.

INDIAMany of us are not aware that BB was once established in India as early as the 19th century. It was recorded that the BB in Calcutta (Kolkata, West Bengal) was active during Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897 and the BB in Dichpalli (Dichpalle, Telangana) was established in 1928. Unfortunately they did not survive the turbulence of India’s early days of independence.

20 21ANNUAL REPORT 2013-2014ANNUAL REPORT 2013-2014

Much effort has been taken in 2013 to spread the awareness of BB Asia work and programmes in the region. The BB Asia website (www.bbasia.org) has been revamped to give it a fresh look and contents have been added to provide more up-to-date information.

The other communication tools that have achieve much success to spread the BB Asia awareness is our official facebook group, “BB Asia Circle”. 6,500 members have been added since its inception in 2011. The BB Asia e-Newsletter “Across Asia” distributed via email that was discontinued in 2012 has been revived in 2014 with 3 issues have been produced and circulate. The Editor and his committee is planning to increase it to 4 quarterly issues in year 2015.

FUND-RAISINGFor the 2013-2014, we endeavour to raise SGD215,860 to meet our 3-year budget for development plan. We have received approximately SGD138,848.10 in 2013 and 2014, from donors from Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Indonesia.

Apart from our country members’ annual subscription, we have received generous contributions from supporters of our ministry.

With the hope that BB could be revived again in the future, BB Asia conducted the first BB road show on 28 June 2014 in a town called Marthadam in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. Plan has been made on 29 November 2014 after discussion with Rev Quek Swee Hwa from Emmanuel Bible-Presbyterian Church, Singapore to make another trip to introduce BB in Hyderabad, India in early 2015.

CHINABB Hong Kong continues its role and effort to expand the BB work in to mainland China. Baby steps have been taken over the years to engage the various authorities through positive engagement with the government officials and churches. The first BB Officers Training was held for churches in Shenzhen and recruitment of BB members had started in June 2014 with the proposed 1st Shenzhen Company.

CAMBODIABB Asia had the opportunity to promote BB to 2 Christian schools and 3 churches in Phnom Penh on 29 November 2014. The seminar was conducted at New life Fellowship church in Phnom Penh. We thank BB Singapore for anchoring the BB development in Cambodia.

Project Asia’s objective is to highlight BB Asia Secretariat initiatives in facilitating and developing the BB work among its member countries. We thank our volunteers who pray for us and also gave us encouragement and advice and also their efforts in the training and funding and providing vehicle transfers to remote locations. We thanked them in helping us in the copy writing, designing and helping us in moderating the BB Asia Circle Facebook.

Our volunteers also contributed their time and funded their own lodging, meals and transfer (land and air) to help complement the work of the BB Asia Secretariat. Some BB Asia EXCO members went beyond fulfilling their obligations to attend the BB Asia EXCO meetings. The long distances to some member countries were not a deterrent where they made several working visits and to conduct training in these nations.
