Lent: A time for us to dig deeperBy Fr. Martin M. Macasaet, SDB

I BEGAN writing these lines on a Friday of Lent the firstone, in fact, in this newly-started liturgical season of ours.As though gearing up for the weekend, the days newspa-pers were certainly not without their sections on beauty, fashion and entertainment. (At least thats what the twomajor dailies have, and both even came with a free maga-zine-catalog from a mall giant.) And as I opened to my In-ternet homepage, I was served my dose of promos and thelatest popular searches. (Hey wait, guess what: Lent wasranked seven for that day.)

    It is interesting to

    n o t e , L e n t i n t h ePhilippines happensto be also the seasonfor such other eventsas the Bb. Pilipinas,the American Idol andStarstruck, the Oscar

Awards, andbest ofallthe election cam-paign period.

    A n d s o t h e y a l lseem to be mixed up,the more the merrier.

Bring it on, ika nga. There were ads fea-

    turing scantily-cladmodels endorsing thelatest skin care treat-ments, hair removaland weight-loss pro-g r a m s . A n d t h e r e

    were also celebritiesriding along on thee l e c t i o n c a m p a i g ntrail, cavorting on thesame stage with thecandidates they wereendorsing.

To the alert observ-er, it all seems to be apotent mishmash ofentertainment and en-dorsement, name re-call and face recogni-t i o n , m o n e y a n dmuckraking. (Is thisan improvement tothe good old threeGs of guns, goonsand gold?) The trap-pings are all there: the

glitter and the noise, the celebrity cultureand the entertainment yes, theyre all overthe place. Its as if ev-erything is conspiringto give us the false im-pression that it s all

just there, at the exter-nals, on the surface.

    I n o t h e r w o r d s ,puros kababawan. Re-ferring to the circusthat our elections are,the INQUIRER editorial ofF e b r u a r y 1 6 a s k s ,When can we matureas a people and treatelections as a serious

matter that requires alot of thought, delibera-tion and discernment?

    T h e m e s s a g e o f Lent affirms preciselythis effort to counteractthe superficial, to shunthe external in favor ofthe internal. In other

    words, to go deeper.T h r e e t i m e s w e

    read it in the Gospel

    p a s s a g e l a s t A s hWednesday: our Heav-enly Father sees whatis hidden deep in ourhearts. We can proba-bly settle for the ap-plause and the rewardnow, on the superfi-cial level.

    Or, we can patient-ly work for and waitfor the real, greaterprize later in heaven.The question is, again:shall we just remaino n t h e s u r f a c e , o rshall we go deeper?

    Sagad-sagarin nar i n n a t i n . W e c a n

plumb the depths ofour being as humans, and arrive at the bot-tom: as we were re-m i n d e d l a s t A s hWednesday, Remem-ber, you are dust andto dust you will re-turn. We simply benddown to the ground,

    we go back to our ori-g i n s . H u m b l y a c -

knowledging thus ourfrail and fetid human-ity, God our Creatorand Provider will evenmore be our strengthand foundation.

    A n d w h o k n o w swhat He will work outin the soil of our livesthis Lenten Season?

    And so as we care-fully tread throughthe minefield of oursocio-cultural and po-l i t i c a l l a n d s c a p e ,hopefully we can keepour bearings and pre-serve the perspectivesprovided to us by our

    Christian faith. TheLenten season can bemost helpful for this,if we but heed its mes-sage of digging deeper y e s , e v e n a s w eread the days news-papers.

Celeb moms on their kids and TVA FEW celebrity moms shared

the things they do to ensurethat their children watch onlykiddie-friendly TV and came up

with common advice:1) Pre-screen the shows your

children will watch, if possible.2) Sit and watch with them,

if you care to find the time.3) Be consistent and vigilant,

if you dont want to lose yourauthority to imaginary heroes. Not even to Superman.

My husband Robert and I arein charge of what Nic watches, and her yaya follows our in-structions. Nic is allowed to

watch only kiddie channels andthe movies weve selected forheranimated series, shows

with lots of music. How should parents regu-

late? Check the ratings given to

a particular film or TV show,

see an episode of the show inadvance, if possible. Watch TV

with the kids and, as they growup, help them make informeddecisions on whats good and

    whats not.Isay Alvarez

    Singer/Actress, mom to Di-dang, 23, Bok, 17, Miong, 10

Miong is allowed to watchcartoonsSpongeBobSquarePants and Rugrats.

    I dont particularly like local

programs that have skimpilyclad girls dancing. Small kidswho watch these programsthink thats the right way todress upmini skirts, tube tops, etc. And sadly, the only dancethey know is the kind of dancethey see on TV.

As much as possible, parentsshould watch TV with their chil-dren. They shouldtake time to ex-plain things, espe-

    cially when watching something

thats not fit for the kids age.Children tend to like what theirparents like.

    Candy PangilinanComedian, mom of Quentin,

5, who has Attention Deficit Hy- peractivity Disorder

I am in control of whatshows my kid watches on TV, as

well as movies on DVD. Every-one in the house helps enforcethe set rules. This includes thelength of time he spends in

front of the TV set and the typeof shows he can see. Also, he isnot allowed to watch TV whileeating.

Shows that teach values for-mation are okay. These are usu-ally seen on Playhouse Disney.

    Noontime shows with girls gy-

rating is a bit too much for me.Kids imitate; they may lookgood doing this while theyre

young, but not too cute any-more as they get older. I thinkthis is also the reason thatteenagers wear clothes that aretoo revealing. They grow upthinking its okay. Any kind ofshow with violence is not al-lowed at home, either.

Parents should previewshows before giving kids per-

mission to see them. The TVshould not be our childrensnanny. Limit TV time to an hourin the morning and an hour inthe afternoon. Kids should en-gage in activities that will teachthem to interact with others.

    Household helpers should

not watch noontime shows andteleseryes when a child isaround. The key word here isconsistency.

Geneva CruzSinger, mom to son Heaven,

    13KC (Montero, her partner)

and I control what Heavenwatches. Hes allowed to watchsports programs, cartoons, etc.He cant watch adult channels.

    Gory, sexual, and violent

shows are offensive. Parents canhelp regulate their kids TV-viewing habits by explaining tothem why they cant watch cer-tain shows. Parents should befirm and loving at the sametime.
