What’s the difference be-tween OPM (Original PilipinoMusic) now and during yourprime?

In the past, even if we hadcolonial mentality, many OPMsongs gave listeners a sense ofpride. Those songs proved thatif Americans could do it, socould we. We tried hard to formour own identity. Today, even ifour artists are talented, many ofthem try to sound “American-ized.” They even imitate thefour-chord progression, whichmakes a true musician feeldumb.

What’s your advice for as-piring singer-songwriters?

Find artists that you respectand make them your mentors,not gods in your mind. Findpeople better than you, peopleyou hope to surpass someday.Study their work but do not becopycats. Build an “image”based on truth so that, whenthe real you comes out, peoplewill not be disappointed.

How did your signaturestyle evolve?

I came from a band during atime when vocalists copied oth-er singers’ styles, to soundplakado or almost the same asthe original recording. I can

sing in different styles. Thatwas my job. But when I wasgiven a chance to record, Ipicked a style that I felt wouldlast and one that I could pulloff. It was a conscious effort onmy part to sound the samethroughout. Even if I wanted tobelt out just to show off, I didnot. I wanted to maintain thatRey Valera sound.

What’s your take onsinging contests on television?

They help young talents getexposure. But contests are con-tests. We fall in love with thesong first and the singer later. Abad singer or an awful arrange-ment can ruin a good song. Nomatter how high a singer’s voiceis, it’s pointless if the audiencecan’t relate to it.

What’s the story behindyour hits, “Kung KailanganMo Ako” and “Maging Sino KaMan”?

There are no personal storiesbehind those songs. I makesongs for listeners, not for agirlfriend. But I wrote bothsongs in one sitting one nightbecause I was broke.

Missing Miss UAlmost but not quite. That

was MJLastimosa’s fate in the MissUniverse pageant. Was it reallya case of the right girl with thewrong gown?

Former Miss U first runner-up Miriam Quiambao-Robertoshares her thoughts. She’s beenthere, worn that.

What’s your take on StellaMarquez-Araneta’s choice ofa Colombian designer tomake Bb. Pilipinas winners’gowns?

I still think a Filipino design-

Why do you think MJ Lasti-mosa did not win the MissUniverse title in spite of herimpressive performance?

She had confidence andgreat energy onstage and herbody was to die for. If she hadworn a different gown, shecould have fared better. Thewhite gown made her lookshorter [alongside] the otherstatuesque candidates. But mak-ing it to the Top 10 is not easy.MJ did a great job in represent-ing our country. We are allproud of her.

How important is a contes-tant’s gown in a pageant?

No matter how well you car-ry a gown, if it’s not the bestdesign for you, it will affectyour final score. A beautifulgown with the right design willcomplement an amazing beautywho wears it with elegance andconfidence.
