Many of you know that Tim White retired on May 31 after over 30+ years as a faculty member in the School, serving the last 13 years as our Director. Tim is a modest individual so we won’t catalog his many achievements here, but we were able to say a few nice things about him and recognize his career at the SFRC Spring Celebration in April. Suffice it to say that Tim has left some big shoes to fill, and the search committee is actively looking right now for nominees to apply for the Director position (information about this position is available at http://sfrc.ufl.edu/about/sfrc-director-search). Applications close on August 31, so if you would like to nominate someone for the position, please contact Dr. Ramesh Reddy (krr@ufl.edu), the search and screen committee chair. A number of long-term SFRC staff members have also recently retired or passed away, and they were also recognized at the Spring Celebration and are highlighted below. On the “Comings” and “Excellence” side, we have hired many new faculty this year in a number of critical areas. You can find short summaries of these excellent new members of the SFRC family inside this newsletter. Our faculty and staff have also received many awards and recognition for their work over the last year, and those are highlighted in this newsletter, as well. During the “In-Between” period when we all work with the Search and Screen committee to identify candidates to replace Tim White, we are serving as Interim Co-Directors of the SFRC. We want to assure you all that we’re both fully committed to the SFRC vision of excellence, community, and strong stakeholder engagement that Tim White worked so hard to maintain during his directorship. Dr. Will Patterson is an applied fisheries ecologist with research focused on population structure, habitat utilization, and trophic ecology of marine fishes. Fish groups he works on include reef, coastal pelagic, and estuarine-dependent species. Much of his work has implications for fisheries management and he’s a long-

serving member and previous chair of the Gulf of Mexico Fisheries Management Council’s Scientific and Statistical Committee. Will looks forward to joining our faculty and building on his many collaborative relationships.

Dr. Frank Asche holds a Ph.D. from the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration. He is president of the International Association of Aquaculture Economics and Management and associate editor for Marine Resource Economics and Marine Policy. His research focuses on aquaculture and seafood markets; he has

also worked in fisheries management and energy economics. He’s published in international economics journals and multi-disciplinary journals like Science and PLoS One. He has also undertaken research projects in Norway and for international organizations like the FAO, OECD and WTO.

Dr. Eben Broadbent co-directs the Spatial Ecology & Conservation (SPEC) Lab with research focused on human-environment interactions with, and impacts on, forested ecosystems in the tropics, including on plant and animal composition and abundance, and ecosystem services. Research typically incorporates remote sensing, including satellite, airplane, unmanned aerial vehicle

(UAV) and ground-based sensor platforms, and geospatial analyses to integrate across scales and disciplines using a wide variety of analytical tools.

Dr. Vincent Lecours has a multidisciplinary background that bridges geomatics and ecology. His research program focuses on improving the extraction of valid and relevant information from the marine environment through the use of geospatial technologies. He seeks to better integrate spatial concepts and methods in applications

like habitat mapping and environmental characterization.

Despite the use of fire in restoration, little is known about how changes in fire season, intensity, and frequency influence population dynamics of native and exotic plants. Dr. Realene Crandall’s research seeks to fill this gap by examining how differences in the life histories of native and exotic plants influence their response to fire. She also

quantifies how disturbance regimes and habitat characteristics interact to shape community patterns of species richness and composition. She’s excited to work with UF students and local stakeholders to improve restoration techniques in longleaf pine ecosystems.

Dr. Basil Iannone’s research has addressed ecological restoration and biological invasions within human-dominated ecosystems. At UF, he will develop research and extension programs that use geospatial tools to inform sustainable and resilient land development. He’ll be a member of an interdisciplinary cohort focusing on this

topic, and will hold appointments in the SFRC, Program for Resource Efficient Communities, and Center for Landscape Conservation and Ecology. He looks forward to forming collaborations to yield real-world solutions to the increasing pressures of land development.

Dr. Jason Vogel is a forest ecologist who will focus on Resilience and Restoration Silviculture. Past research includes studies on how management, climate change, and disturbance affect various ecosystem types—ranging from loblolly pine plantations to arctic tundra. He plans to build a research program that provides scientific information

to Florida’s citizens of how a rapidly changing environment is affecting their forests. He previously worked in the SFRC and Botany Department at UF as a postdoctoral fellow, and he and his family are excited to be back.

Dr. Wendy-Lin Bartels joins the SFRC and Natural Resources Leadership Institute (NRLI; nrli.ifas.ufl.edu). As a cultural anthropologist and science communication expert, she researches partnership development and resilience, especially among scientists and stakeholders who are involved in co-producing knowledge. She

assesses the participatory methods and institutional arrangements that link research with practice. She has worked on climate and adaptation projects with teams of climate, crop, forestry, and hydrological modelers to make research products more useful/usable to stakeholders.
