I sometimes find it amusing how our attitudes toward things change over time. I know we all look back at those pictures of us from the 70s, 60s and earlier and are amazed at the hairstyles and clothes we wore then. At the time, my generation thought we were the height of fashion with our big hair and bellbottoms. If you happen upon an old episode of Columbo on the tube, you’ll be amazed at how long men’s sideburns were. And then there were the bold, psychedelic patterns of the disco era. Now we simply look back at all this and wonder, “What were we thinking?” I’m sure that a lot of this has to do with the fashion industry and its need to keep us moving along from one trend to the next to ensure that we’re all in a constant state of desire to be “trendy” and all caught up on the latest fashions. Skirt lengths float up and down, men’s ties get wider and narrower as do lapels. The older one gets, the less one cares about these subtleties of fashion. Of course, when this happens, there’s always the danger of getting stuck in a fashion time warp and ending up as a middle aged balding guy with a ponytail and a penchant for wearing Hawaiian shirts. No, really, it can happen! You might not realize it but the same thing happens with plants. Some plants are popular for awhile and then they are replaced with another. You can go on the internet and find the “Perennial of the Year” and “Annual of the Year” for this and past years. Sometimes it is the color that makes the plant popular and sometimes it’s because the plant is a newly bred variety. Sometimes, just as in the fashion world, plants that were popular in the past enjoy a revival as new gardeners rediscover plants that their grandparents loved. There’s one plant though, that has suffered a fall from grace so complete that few of us are even aware that it was once one of the most well thought of plants on the planet. The plant I’m referring to is the ubiquitous dandelion. Like most of you, I loathe them in my lawn. I want my lawn to be green…not green and yellow or green and white. I’ll mow off the flowers and mow off the seed pods and even threaten to kill them with weed killer. Like most of you, I’m not a big fan of dandelions. I have a vague recollection of tasting dandelion wine that some older relative used to make. I also recall not being too impressed. I know that they sell the leaves in the grocery stores now. That’s not something that I think we had back in the 70s. So, what’s up with these weeds? It might surprise you to know that, at one time, there was NOT ONE dandelion growing on the entire continent of North America. Even knowing that, you’d probably assume that it was just an unfortunate accident that they’re here…they must have gotten here along with another plant or as a seed stuck to someone’s shoe. Actually, the dandelion, that scourge of our lawns that we detest so much, was brought here by European colonists intentionally. In fact, more than one group of colonists brought it with them to their new homes in America. Germans are known to have brought it with them and Spanish colonists introduced dandelions into Mexico including what is now the American southwest. The reason they made a point of bringing dandelion seed to the New World is because they depended on it to keep them healthy. The dandelion, which is actually a plant native to Asia, has a long history as a beneficial and medicinal plant. In China, it is mentioned in herbal texts as early as the 7th century. We can assume that it was used medicinally in China even earlier. In Wales, it is mentioned in the writing of physicians during the 1200s. A French physician gave us the name dandelion when he called them ‘dent de lion’ or ’teeth of the lion’ describing the ragged shape of the leaf. Other common names for the dandelion have been: Blowball, Cankerwort, Swine Snout, Wild Endive, Sin in the Grass and another French name, pis-en-lit which translates as “wets the bed”. This last name describes the dandelion’s ability as a diuretic. The Latin name for the dandelion is Taraxacum officinale which can be translated as ‘disorder remedy’. Dandelion leaves are a wonderful source of vitamin A as well as potassium, calcium, phosphorus and iron. Common knowledge of our ancestors was that the various parts of the dandelion can be used to treat urinary tract infections, abscesses, eczema, gout, boils, stomach aches and even snakebite. It has also been used to treat high blood pressure and as a liver purifier. The white sap in the flower’s stem has even been suggested as a cure for warts. The list goes on and on. I’m certainly not suggesting that you use dandelions medicinally but it makes for interesting reading. One would think that, since there are references to the benefit of dandelions about as far back in history as history goes, there might be something to all this. One thing is for sure, our ancestors were not going to the New World without the seeds of their favorite cure. It is no wonder that they are everywhere. We may have completely lost sight of the virtues of the lowly dandelion but they are still with us nonetheless. I’ll have to admit that tender young dandelion greens sometimes make it into the salads at my house. They are a little bitter but, when mixed with all the other greens, they’re pretty good. For some, it is an acquired taste. We once served some dinner guests salad with dandelion greens in it without their knowledge. They enjoyed the salad but called the next day to ask us, “What was in that salad anyway?” I won’t go into detail. Suffice it to say, THEY noticed the effect dandelions can have on the digestive system! Thanks for the read.

NOVENA PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never known to fail). Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Mary con-ceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Sweet mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, after 3 days the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. Favor granted. C.S.

SPRING INTO ACTION!
(MS) — With home prices on the rise, fi nishing a base-ment is the latest trend in real estate. More and more homeowners are enjoying the perks of additional living space, a reduction in heating and cooling costs, a healthi-er home, and, if done right, a more desirable home when selling.
A fi nished basement can be used for virtually anything and may off er multipurpose spaces the entire family can enjoy. Common uses include additional storage or a me-dia room, craft room, guest suite, workshop, or gym. A little extra room can give a growing family space to breathe and provide conve-nience for everyday life.
An unfi nished basement can be a source of energy loss. By fi nishing your basement, you can expect to see savings on your heating and cooling costs. Industry experts rec-ommend fi nishing the space with the proper framing, in-sulation and vapor barrier to guarantee a cozy and invit-ing space. Insulation plays a key role in the comfort of your newly remodeled space and although its hidden within your walls, insulation will make sure your space

stays cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Retailers suggest using a stone wool insulation, such as ROXUL. This recommendation is also fi re and water repellent and is resistant to mold, mildew, rot and bacterial growth — making your space healthy and safe.
An added benefi t to ex-panding downstairs with a fi nished basement is the instant marketability. Many buyers now demand a well-fi nished basement to give them extra space. Although you may not immediately re-coup the fi nancial costs prior to selling, you will stand out among the rest.

(MS) — After a winter of hibernation, spring is the perfect time to consider remodeling projects that will help keep your house cool in the coming summer months and reduce en-ergy consumption.
An unfi nished basement is a source of energy loss in many homes. By simply fi nishing the space with wall and fl oor cov-erings, you will notice a diff erence on your energy bills. A re-modeled basement off ers more than additional storage and living space. It can provide room for a growing family or a space where you can retreat for some privacy.
Insulation is a key component in making your basement look and feel comfortable, inviting and dry. For the best results, install a rigid board insulation like ROXUL ComfortBoard IS against the concrete foundation before you stud the wall. The board is mechanically fastened or adhered to the con-crete foundation wall, preventing thermal bridging through the studs, off ering a higher R-value and better thermal per-formance. It will ensure your basement is not a source of en-ergy loss, but rather an inviting retreat all year round.
Installation tips are available online at www.diywithroxul.com.
Homeowners hoping to expand their homes are faced with a number of choices. One of the fi rst they will have to make is which direction to take their expansion. Homeowners can choose to expand horizontally, increasing the footprint of their homes, or vertically.
Professionals urge prospective remodelers to consider the pros and cons to each expansion option, including which di-rection to build.
HOME ADDITIONS: UP OR OUT?
One of the fi rst considerations is land space. Building hori-zontally will cut into yard space that you may have already earmarked for a pool, shed or another feature. Proximity to neighbors and the dimensions of your property will also help to determine if expanding horizontally is a good idea.
Building codes and neighborhood requirements also must be considered before making any renovations. Some mu-nicipalities may have rules in place that govern renovations. Add-ons may not be allowed to exceed certain height limits, nor may structures be built within a certain number of feet of property lines.
Homeowners who choose to build upward will have to con-tend with work crews and other staff being in their homes. Raising the roof may require vacating the premises at a cer-
tain point. Also, extensive renovation work will be needed on the lower level of the home, whether it’s to shore up the structure, clean up after the renovation or repair ceilings, dry-wall and other components where levels meet.
It may seem easier to expand outward, but this requires lay-ing additional foundation for the new building structure. Bringing in digging equipment and masons can be costly. When you build vertically, such foundation work may not be
necessary if your home is structurally sound and can bear the weight of the addition.
Building out typically involves the least disruption to your life and the existing space. Homeowners should keep in mind that any renovation will require permits or variances. In ad-dition, if the project increases the value of the home, home insurance costs and property taxes may rise. Only after all considerations have been weighed should a project begin.

According to Remodeling magazine’s “2014 Cost vs. Val-ue Report,” a major kitchen remodeling project should enable homeowners to re-coup 74.2 percent of their initial investments. Kitchen renovations have long been a safe way to improve the functionality and value of a home. But not every kitchen project is a guaranteed win-ner. Homeowners may in-advertently make changes that end up sticking out like a sore thumb rather than improving the space. Take a look at these kitchen remod-eling dos and don’ts to guide your next undertaking.
DO consider the way your kitchen will look with the rest of the home. Keep architectural integrity in mind when designing the space. A farmhouse sink and country cabinets can look out of place in an ul-tra-modern home.
DON’T overlook the im-portance of a seasoned de-signer or architect. These pros will know the tricks to maximizing space and achieving the ideal layout of appliances and may be able to recommend local
contractors and vendors.
DO look beyond surface de-tails to the structural integri-ty of the design. The kitchen should be functional, long-lasting and beautiful.
DON’T design just for to-day, but look to the future as well. Unless you are will-ing to spend $50,000 every fi ve years, look for styles and materials that will last for the long haul. Older homeown-ers may want to make adjust-ments now that address po-tential mobility issues down the road.
DO work with what you have.
A complete demolition and renovation is not always nec-essary to achieve the desired results. Only invest in major changes if something is not working (such as having to walk across the entire kitch-en to access the stove) or is unsafe. Otherwise, minor up-grades may do the trick.
DON’T over-improve the space. A fully equipped commercial kitchen may be handy for a professional chef, but the average person may not need an industrial hood and indoor pizza oven.
When you make excessive improvements, you may not be able to recoup as much of the money spent because your home will not be on par with the values of homes in the neighbor-hood.
DO make sure you can af-ford the project. Plan for some unexpected purchas-es and plan out the renova-tion according to your bud-get. Skimping on materials or design because of lack of money may leave you feel-ing dissatisfi ed afterward.

Biosolids are an organic amendment available to gardeners. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, biosol-ids are carefully treated and monitored residuals formed at sewage treatment facili-ties. They may be recycled into fertilizers to stimulate
plant growth. Biosolids may help reduce the need for chemical fertilizers. Biosol-ids can be safe to use, but homeowners should be cautious about heavy metal content, pathogen levels and salts. Rely on only Class A biosolids, which have been treated to reduce the
bacterial content and are ap-
proved for use in production
agriculture. Home garden-
ers may want to avoid bio-
solids in vegetable gardens
because of the potential for
heavy metal content seep-
ing into the produce.

Planting a vegetable garden can be a worthwhile endeavor for anyone who has an available patch of land. Gardens need not take up much space, and even apartment dwellers with-out yards can plant small gardens in containers they place on terraces or window boxes.
Although establishing a garden is easy enough, beginners may make a few mistakes along the way. Those who already have paved the garden way before can offer novice garden-ers some worthwhile tips.
One of the first decisions novice gardeners must make is which crops to grow. This will help determine how much land you will need and which supplies or soil amendments will be necessary. According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, a com-mon error for beginners is planting too much and more than anyone could ever consume, so it’s best to start small and be proud of that small garden.
Plants such as peppers, squash and tomatoes produce throughout the season, so you may not need many plants to provide for your needs. Less prolific plants may require a greater investment to produce a similar yield.
Locate your garden in an area that gets adequate sun. Many vegetables need between six and eight hours of sunlight per day. Without enough light, they will not bear as much and could be susceptible to insect infestation. Vegetables and fruit also need plenty of water because they’re not very drought-tolerant, so keep gardens close to a water source.
Another good tip is to locate the garden near the house or barbecue grill. This way you can easily harvest fresh produce and use it when cooking.
Soil preparation is also key. Till the soil and remove debris like rocks, sticks and hard clumps of dirt. Work with organic mate-rial, such as manure or compost. Apply mulch after planting to help maintain moisture levels in the soil.

Power tools can dramatically reduce the time it takes to complete home improve-ment projects. Professional contractors regularly rely on power tools for cutting and sanding, and many do-
it-yourself renovators follow suit and invest in power tools to help get the job done. But power tools, in spite of their usefulness, are not without risk. According to the Work Safe Center, power tool in-
juries account for as many as 400,000 emergency room visits in the United States each year. Power nailers, chain saws and table saws account for the greatest number of injuries. Keeping safe is of the utmost prior-ity when using power tools. Here’s how:
• Read all manufacturers’ instructions and guidelines before use.
• Keep your tools clean and in proper operating condi-tion.
• Use the right tool for the job.
• Always wear eye protec-tion, such as safety glasses or goggles.
• Wear standard cotton or leather work gloves to pro-tect hands.
• Consider the use of ear-plugs or earmuffs with loud power tools.
• Don’t use power tools in proximity to flammable va-pors, dust or construction materials.
• Always check that wires are kept away from blades.
• Maintain a tight grip on a tool.
• Do not overreach when us-ing tools, and maintain bal-ance.
• Pay attention when work-ing with any power tool.
• Only use attachments spe-cifically recommended for
the power tools and ensure proper installation.
• Unplug all power tools during breaks and anytime when tools are not in use.
• Routinely inspect tools for damage.
• Keep tools stored in secure locations when not in use.
