Dear delegates, all the good things come to an end, we all know that even when we pretend not to.Even the Session reached its conclusion, it is time to debate, time to share your ideas in front of a hundred peole.People you've been seeing for the last four days, people you've become friend with.As "The Beatles" would say:"It's been a hard day's night" and you worked hard, pushing yourselves beyond the limit in order to have your speeches ready for GA.We're sure you all are prepared, so don't be anxious and speak your mind.We really hope this experience will last forever in your mind and your heart. We hope you'll smile reading the Session newspaper while remembering all the great moments of Volterra 2012.As editors we never rest and we keep ourselves alive drinking coffee. However this does not prevent us from making mistakes: sorry Luca and sorry Giulia for forgetting to add your signature at the end of a couple of your articles. You can also find the previous issues of the newspaper online at the following link: http://tinyurl.com/7od4a2m (1st issue)http://issuu.com/tomriddlevolt/docs/2nd_issue (2nd issue)

AFET,you're recognised!

The story of some clever guys coming up together and making a great job

Committee on Foreign Affairs, you’re recognised! I still remember the day when you guys first met; someone was shy and someone was more extroverted, but common embarrassment was still in the air. That’s why teambuilding exists! Classic EYP games broke the ice among the newly fellow delegates: first, they got to know their names, which is always challenging; afterwards they started a much more important training: how to deal with each other’s opinion. It is always difficult to change your mind, when you think you own the truth.

Fortunately, each and every member of AFET was in the right mood and everyone immediately started feeling part of the team. Later on, serious stuff came over. They went to their classroom; they set their chairs in a semicircle and started talking about their topic. Teambuilding was clearly effective, as they started discussing without any worries. They all had the bravery to speak their mind freely and they gathered many great ideas. They seemed obviously satisfied with the relationships they established as a unique and incredibly amazing team.

Three years ago, a guy like you was heading to Volterra, unaware of his destiny. He had almost never heard of this place and he surely didn’t know that much about a jail located in town. The first thing he was impressed by was the amazing venue hosting the prison: it dominates the city, as it is inside the Fortezza Medicea, an immense, ancient building set on the highest hill. It was built in 1342 and expanded in 1475. For this reason it is composed of two separate wings.Volterra’s prison is renowned for its efficient and elaborated rehabilitation plan. It includes a series of different activities for the prisoners; among the others is a cooking class. Still the best part comes on particular occasions, when selected persons are allowed to enter the building and taste the delicious dishes prepared by the convicts. These events usually start with a guard asking everyone to drop all valuable (and potentially dangerous) possessions at the entrance, in order to respect the code of conduct enforced inside the prison. That night, as every respectable Gala dinner, a group of prisoners was waiting for the visitors to arrive in a small clearing, in order to offer an appetizer, immersed in a magical atmosphere granted by candles and the fascinating stone walls surrounding the building. Finally, the time they were all waiting for: everyone was walked into the dining room. The feeling was like being thrown in a different age: you could feel History, perceive the feelings those walls had absorbed in the past 7 centuries. The room was overcrowded but even that was not enough to let them down and they enjoyed that fabulous night. Waiters were so professional you could almost forget that you weren’t just attending a dinner at an ordinary restaurant in an extraordinary building. At the end of the room there was a mezzanine, with another long table, hosting the guests of honour invited for the occasion along with the teachers. In a moment, time was up. Dishes were incredibly tasty and extremely well groomed; service was flawless and everything was arranged to make the guests feel comfortable even in an unusual place such as a prison. Out of a big wooden main door everything seemed over. However, walking back home, our guy was lost in his thoughts, going over and over again the events of that unforgettable night. The unusual and forbidden place, the astounding people he got to share this experience with and the uncommon atmosphere turned this event into an unforgettable adventure.

Dinner in jailAn unorthodox place to dine, an overwhelming experience to remember

Risk-free Nuclear Energy!CULT is risk-free nuclear energy!

A real team, with a lot of fantasy

Fighting for children equality

They are our best committee!

CULT GOLDEN RULES

1. Be happy and relaxed.

2. Listen to each other.

3. Respect everybody.

4. Come to an agreement.

5. Brainstorm.

6. Raise your hand (before speaking).

7. Write ideas.

8. Keep every idea.

9. Be open-minded.

The Committee on Culture and Education may be compared to nuclear energy. Why that? The single delegates are like hydrogen atoms dispersing and fending off. They can create a lot of energy, and actually they did! In fact when hydrogen nuclei meet in nature, there often is a nuclear fusion. That means that the different nuclei, which are very small, gather in order to create a bigger one. Isn’t it the same with our dear delegates’ brains? They first didn’t know each other and were just roaming in the room 2. But when they finally met with the TB, they started creating extremely high quantities of energy. But beware, nuclear energy can also be very dangerous, and so are our delegates! When they debate and they really can’t agree with each other’s ideas, they can turn into a real atomic bomb, just a good one (most of the times). However, I think they are better than nuclear energy, even if they really look like it. In facts, when the nuclei fend off they just explode while our Committee tries with diplomacy to find a mutual agreement. Our fellow hydrogen atoms are very different, but anyway they managed to find a way to form one united team. Altogether, Michele who is Mastering himself, the poor Sick but incredible Sara, the EYP-experienced Drawing Daniela, the Fighting but so Funny Francesco, Marta the Multi-tasking girl, Mattia who is so Motivated, Stefania the wonderful Swimmer, Eleonora who is really Excited, Chiara who is actually not so Chatty, Katia amazingly Kind and last but certainly not least, Martinella our remarkable Magician were beautifully united in diversity.

But for all this physics and chemistry, we needed particular professionals: our two Great Chairs, Jelena and Diego! They guided this great committee during the whole session. Learning to know their delegates, they helped them to feel more self-confident encouraging them to speak and assisting them during the different activities. They knew when the delegates most needed an energiser, they guided the debates and they made the delegates work and laugh respecting all the C U LT G o l d e n Ru l e s w i t h a re l i g i o u s perseverance. Everyone (both delegate and official) worked really hard, despite the potential difficulties arisen. There is no need to share this thought with you though, as you will see yourself during the GA.

Here’s to you,fabulous DEVE!

As if they knew each other already

Their success was extended to the Teambuilding and Committee work due to their availability, their trust for the immediate, their good level of English, their capacity to be independent and last, but not least, their high level of knowledge as far as their topic is concerned: land grabbing.I have no doubts the group will continue to be that cheerful and active until the very last moment of the Session.

by Fabrizio Zamparelli

Guided by Davide and Lavrentia, the commitee fought the difficulties of learning each other’s names and breaking the ice in very efficient ways. After a few name games the first goal had already been achieved. As a matter of fact, their “ice breaking” process took less than half an hour because the group was so compact that it seemed they already knew each other. The “orange game” was the first real game they engaged in. The carachteristics varied all from the dynamic Francesca to the shy Marta. The delegates then started to create a deeper connection and really found out what they had in common.

Participate in LifeElderly Must

Reassuring the older, safeguarding a sustainable future for the younger

Decrease in the workforce, an increasingly ageing European population, health care expenditure, social exclusion, dropping birth rates, the topic the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs has been dealing with definitely features many aspects, while the challenge calls for Europe to sustainably adapt to the new data.Back to Volterra, even for Harry Potter, it is always difficult for one to be introduced to a group of people almost genuinely stranger to each other, who, in just a couple of days have not only got to know each other, but also to cooperate in such a way to end up producing a coherent, concrete and clear Motion for a Resolution.

Teambuilding may not perfectly work out straight from day one. On Saturday, though, EMPL got down to work as an admirably integrated group, certainly not lacking enthusiasm at all. As for Committee Work, tension has not really been EMPL’s share. Discussion kept floating, civilized little points at the basis of this successful job and everyone worked willingly to maintain the order, bravissimi!Last hint: beyond our commitment for the elderly to participate in life, we always also have to BEER in mind that Everyone Must Predominantly Laugh. At least, that’s how it always gets easier for us all…

Thank you for –just now and then– letting me in your Committee, yours, Panos.

Are you ENVIous?News from my harmonious committee: ENVI! After three days of teambuilding and a hard and effective committee work on the increasing European obesity level with the chairs Arnolds and Gabrielle, finally a break for my beloved delegates Michel, Giulia, Emmanuel, Federica, Laura, Simone, Isabella, Gaia, Anita, Chiara, Federica.According to Isabella: “the discussion was so peaceful and polite that sometimes I thought it seemed we all were a bit sleepy, but at last we did a great job.”

Now they are going on a treasure hunt! While spending some time together looking for magic in our campus, I ask them how they feel: everybody agrees on the fact that the word that would describe best their committee is “Collaboration”. Even if “Skinny” Michel says that they’re all a bit anxious about the GA, Gaia adds they are up to the challenge. However, competition is not their main goal, an other important side of EYP is the spirit of cohesion within the group, which is also the reason why they want to stay involved in EYP.

GA PreparationSo stressing to be a delegate!

The worst moment in an EYP session? Actually it is also one of the best! Now: your great almost sleepless night! It’s one of the moments where you feel adrenaline! Can you get the kind of moments I'm talking about? When you are truly excited and really really scared at the same time? Well, if you can’t, you were probably sleeping during the whole General Assembly (GA) preparation and also the whole GA actually! At

the moment (Monday March 12th 2012, really late since it is… 3;10 am) you, dear delegates, are still preparing your speeches! And that is great, you are so motivated and into the EYP atmosphere! I went all around the campus and interviewed some delegates to know how they were feeling. I thought they would all be dead tired and almost falling asleep on the ground, but actually they said they were so enthusiastic that they just wanted to go on with their preparation and they couldn’t even think of sleeping. Today we all know that being a delegate is really great, but I guess when you have just discovered EYP you probably don’t expect spending your night working for any kind of debate.

And what about tomorrow? One of the greatest and most terrifying moments in your whole EYP life! Of course, the GA is going to be an amazing moment, but I guess, you are just afraid to make mistakes and say some silly things in front of hundreds of people. But just think about one thing, after the teambuilding, the zulu dance, the GleEYP night and all the other activities, can you really look more insane? I am afraid you can’t… (I am just kidding, don’t worry! Using sarcasm here!) Anyway, I just wanted to tell you that it is great that you have spent so much time preparing for the GA, and that it proves that you are great delegates who are really involved in what they do! So good luck to everyone for the GA!

Watch out for FEMM This committee has a lot of girlpower!

Put eleven girls in one room and you definitely get some strong friendships. One member of the committee actually asked her chair if she could bring her mattress to another building at the campus… Some members of FEMM even slept together in the same bed. Now that’s what we call team spirit. And that team spirit was something you saw in everything they did. They bonded really quickly during the teambuilding – what would you expect with only girls – and even while deciding their Golden Rules in the committee room. The topic of FEMM is about discrimination against women in Europe. That is a really broad topic, which sometimes led to the committee getting sidetracked during their discussions.

Filtering the enormous amount of information was hard for them, but fortunately they managed to do that quickly. If I could only say one thing about FEMM, I would definitely say they’re incredibly fast!I can also say more about them. This committee has really showed their strength during the resolution writing. They had their problems, but they managed to solve them and came out stronger than before. There’s one thing FEMM doesn’t need to worry about at all: the General Assembly. You should’ve seen them working - with all that time they put into the resolution, and all their heated discussions, it’s just impossible for them to fail at the GA.

LIBErtas(libertatis, libertati…)

A committee detained in duty to assist the Human and their dignity

I pretty much doubt whether there is another Committee in the Session like the one on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, which has been kind enough to have me among them, you’re so adorable, anyway, thank you, guys! From hygiene amenities in detention centres throughout Europe to overcrowded detention facilities, from minors in detention to the motivation behind prisoners’ rights, LIBE has been there to thoroughly examine each and every aspect of the issue considered to be beneficial for the purpose of a proper recommendation for the improvement of imprisonment conditions in the European region.A team working together, that is what LIBE’s image is, neither an experts’ panel nor a random sum of people. Indeed, it is just amazing the way they met each other and achieved to get into a well-set, ef fective group. We know our Teambuilding…

Day 2 may have been a little more demanding. Now, if a smiling Journalist asked for one single word to describe the day, “brainstorming” would have been the most reasonable and appropriate among the answers! (SO much paper, SO many post-its…) Saturday was a day of long brain-storming ideas’ reviewing, but it was really worth it. Energisers were wisely finding their way in exactly when tiredness started making its appearance, little disagreements were automa-tically soothed and, despite some factsheets’ “inflation”, everything has proved to be notably on the go. Admirable! What is there left to be further noted…? Just a wish for a great continue!

Officially open and here we go!Footnoting on the happenings in downtown Volterra

It’s pretty easy when it comes to writing about an event featuring, apart from the given “us”, also one of the Vice-Presidents of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, On. Rosi Bindi, who, by the way, also happens to be more or less a Euro-federalist (“Vorrei anch’io ‘the United States of Europe’”).

Regardless of our divergent views on the process of European integration, the honour to have her among us in the Centro Studio is still great.

I’m not writing that Onorevole Bindi has addressed the audience with a “quite interesting” speech, because I’ll get cliché and cliché should be avoided by a proper Panos. The speech, however, was quite catchy and definitely up-to-date regarding concurrent European politics, from single Member States’ attempts to “dominate” the European common political space to the discrepancies of the Common Market and from the institutional gaps in nowadays’ EU to the crisis of the parliamentary system both in Italy and internationally.

Both the speech itself and the debate that followed were notably lively, with an astonishing participation by the delegates. Every single Committee placard was up demanding some attention, almost everyone had a question and, to all the hands that were raised, this was Ms. Bindi’s reaction the questions; “We’re taking them all!”, despite the strict schedule. Oh, time constraints...

Thankful to On. Bindi for her presence, the ceremony went on with our well-known Tommaso, Tiago, and Andrea, the beloved President of EYP Italy. No doubt they have all been exceptionally good when on the lectern, BUT foreign Officials would have appreciated it much more also in English. (Italian is adorable; English, nonetheless, is equally practical sometimes...)

Tiago didn’t forget to remind us how important being thankful is, while Tommaso pointed out that passion is so much needed from time to time. Being passionate, travel and be always open to a new experience, quite a concept, n’est-ce pas?

As for Andrea, his speech’s really got me. Yes, we need a properly functioning democracy, yes, we need quality in politics and yes, great numbers are not always a suitable index for our democracy’s quality and maturity. The future is us and we need to address it as consciously thinking citizens. Thank you so much, Andrea; consapevolezza!

This has briefly been our cosy Opening Ceremony, absolutely lovely in its entirety all the way until the Session has been officially opened as the “XXVIII NSC of EYP Italy, Volterra 2010. Now, what...? Ok, “2012” it is!

Four days ago, 88 youngsters from all over Italy, many of them for the very first time, gathered in Volterra to participate in the XXVIII National Selection Conference of EYP Italy, organised in this exquisite Tuscan town for the fourth year in a row.One adorable Portuguese President, 13 Chairpersons, 8 Committees, 2 Editors, 6 Journalists, 2 utterly-prepared-for-everything HOs and 5 Organisers after, here we are, at the awkward moment when the Session has been officially closed and all the aforementioned, including the 88 of you and your caring accompanying teachers, can’t exactly decide whom to greet first before starting the journey home. So, is this the end?Good question –the answer will be better–, but let’s take the whole issue from the beginning. (Alternatively, I’d love to discuss the question with each and every one of you, but I’m rather not exactly sure of your appreciation towards this initiative of mine.)Comunque! Starting by the facts, had it not been this Session, we would have apparently not been all gathered here dealing with such questions. What is more, we wouldn’t have had the opportunity to get to know each other or to sit down for a minute, think and then discuss hot European current issues in a most civilised way.“Harry Potter” would have just stayed ensnared in his seven books, I couldn’t have had the opportunity to stand before so many Italian delicacies assembled in the SIAF cafeteria and this goodbye article would have been out of question. These three paragraphs above, however, are completely irrelevant to the question posed, exactly because this could be the end, despite all the nice little moments each of us has possibly decided to carry with. It could be the end, in spite of all the lovely Italian-English chatting in the corridors, in- and outside the Committee Rooms, in spite of the efficient organisation by EYP Italy, in spite of your teachers’ good mood and efforts to get you up to here, or in spite, finally, even of your own participation at all the crucial moments of this Session.

Volterra, o cara, addio! And no, this is certainly not the end; just a goodbye for the moment…

20

Nonetheless, this is NOT the end, mainly for three little reasons. There can’t be an abrupt end when there are still people interested, caring and hard working to establish and promote an institution that, beyond all the fun, the cool people, the international interaction and the political motivation, offers the tangible opportunity to the European youth to enter and influence a common European space for dialogue and cooperation. There can’t be an end if what we’ve all tried and liked at the minimum here is multiplied and spread all over Europe.Last, but certainly not least, this is not the end, unless you want it to be. At any other case, regardless of any intermediate result, we will all still have the opportunity not only to stay in touch and in, but also to claim what is there to be claimed by us, the European youth. So, is this the end? Just think of it and then have a quick rewind of the whole session; it always works. Till then: addio, Volterra, o cara, addio, carissimi! And a most warm wish to Edo to get well as soon as possible…I only hope you really enjoyed the session as I, at least, did. I’m also pretty much sure that, sooner than expected, many of us will meet again somewhere in Europe, be it at an IS, at a cute little forum or, coincidentally, anywhere else, taking photos in a grandiose square…Looking forward to this moment, arrivederci! by Panaghoitis P. Kalaïdhopoulos
