The Varvarivskyi Bridge Undercover agents tell us that the Ukrainian Separatists and their Russian allies are preparing for a major offensive. CIA planners have projected the city of Mykolaiv to be the likely FUP. If correct, the Varvarivskyi Bridge, which spans the Pivdennyi Buh River, is vital to the prosecution of that undertaking. Because the Russians have significantly strengthened the air defense network in the vicinity of Mykolaiv, drones and manned aircraft will be unable to operate in that airspace. Our only chance to destroy the bridge is to insert a small team of U.S. Navy SEAL operatives, and hope they can guide sufficient ordnance to the target. In addition to the main objective, a secondary mission is to identify as many Separatist units as possible and upload the information to a secure satellite link. If the bridge is not destroyed, this information will be essential for the Nationalists to have any hope of stopping the onslaught. However, under no circumstances must there be any evidence of CIA involvement.

DEVGRU Orders Your team will insert into the city under cover of darkness. You will wear the uniform and carry the kit of Ukrainian Nationalist forces. Your primary objective is to lase the Varvarivskyi Bridge and guide an array of ordnance to the target (d6 TQR). Your secondary objective is to identify as many Separatist units as possible and upload the information to a secure satellite link (d6 TQR). Exfiltration coordinates will be communicated to you once your mission is complete. If any of your team is killed or captured, the Navy will disavow knowledge of your actions.
Nationalist Orders CIA strategists are making plans to destroy the Varvarivskyi Bridge. However, in the event they are unsuccessful, you must delay the breakout of Separatist forces for as long as possible. We need time for our reserves to mobilize.
Spetsnaz Orders An informant tells us that a U.S. Naval Special Operations force has been inserted into the city of Mykolaiv. Because of the imminence of our offensive, this is an alarming development. Our air defense network is sufficient to deter any direct airborne assault, but long-‐range missiles and JDAM bombs are still a grave threat. Fortunately for us, these munitions must be laser-‐guided by someone on the ground. Once the FUP process begins and our intentions are revealed, there will not be much time before the bridge is attacked. Consequently, it is imperative that you locate and eliminate the U.S. SOF team as quickly as possible.
Separatist Orders The army is moving to the assembly area near Mykolaiv. Your company has been selected to lead the attack across the Varvarivskyi Bridge. We have received information that the CIA, in conjunction with Nationalist forces, may attempt to destroy the bridge. Although this could delay heavy armored assets, your infantry will still be able to cross the river in BTRs and BMPs.
DEVGRU Forces • 2x 4-‐man Fire Team TQR: 5 (d4 RPG, 2x claymore mine, 1x Stinger)
o 3x JDAM Bomb (turn 2)

Spetsnaz Forces (turn 1) • 2x 4-‐man Fire Team TQR: 4 (d6 RPG)
o Mi-‐24 Hind TQR: 3 (weapons platforms are fully loaded)
Separatist Forces (turn 2) • 1x 6-‐man Company HQ TQR: 3 (1x Stinger)
o 1x BMP-‐3 • 3x 4-‐man Platoon HQ TQR: 2 & 3
o 3x BMP-‐3 • 9x 7-‐man Dismount TQR: 1-‐4
o 9x BTR-‐80 • 5x T-‐90 MBT TQR: 2-‐4 • 5x T-‐80 MBT TQR: 2-‐4
Victory Conditions DEVGRU: ID twelve Separatist AFVs, and on turn 2, guide three JDAM bombs to Varvarivskyi Bridge. It takes two direct hits to destroy the bridge. Nationalists: Prevent Separatist Forces from exiting the board. You will score 1-‐point for each Separatist failure. 12-‐points are needed to achieve victory. Spetsnaz: Eliminate DEVGRU before they destroy the bridge and ID 12 AFVs. Separatists: Cross the Pivdennyi Buh River and exit the board with at least 12 AFVs. Satellite Image of Actual Location

Map—The Varvarivskyi Bridge GM NOTES: The ground is firm and the morning is clear. Separatist amphibious AFVs can enter the river where the bank narrows (e.g. notice the spot near the Pivdennyi Buh River label). The SEAL team may hide in any building that provides direct line of sight to the bridge. At the start of turn 2, they may attempt to lase the bridge whenever they have an action. This is accomplished by making a d6 TQR save. The Spetsnaz team enters via the Mi-‐24 Hind from the southeast edge of the board. The helicopter may transport them anywhere on the Mykolaiv side of the river. The Mi-‐24 Hind is equipped with a bevy of sophisticated electronics, and it is capable of detecting lasers, satellite uploads and radio transmissions. The Hind’s electronics officer hears a slight ping when the helicopter closes (½ speed) within 30cm of DEVGRU’s position. However, it must hover within 15cm to get a solid tone.

When that happens, mark the spot with a bingo chit. Understand that this may render the Hind vulnerable to Stinger attack. The Nationalist forces must set-‐up on the ridge at the northwest edge of the board. They may begin dug-‐in and hidden. The Separatist Company enters from the southeast edge of the map on turn 2.
Author’s Notes: This scenario is designed for Micro Melee: Modern Warfare, which is written for 6mm miniatures. It uses a 1:1 ground scale of 3mm = 1-‐yard. Therefore, the ranges given for the Hind’s electronics equipment are 100-‐yards (30cm) and 50-‐yards (15cm) respectively.
