April MovieLion Standing In The WindSPECIAL SATURDAY AFTERNOON SCREENING

The JCCC and the Toronto Japanese Film Festival are proud to bring you the Canadian Premiere of master director Takashi Miike’s inspiring true story of a Japanese doctor and his devotion to saving lives in Kenya.

Lion Standing in the Wind is based on a real story and chronicles the inspirational life of Dr Koichiro Shimada who sets off to Kenya to serve as a medical doctor. In a turn of events, he finds himself stationed in a hospital in Lokichogio in the heart of the Kenyan conflict. Witnessing death and the grim reality of child soldiers rocks him to the core and propels him on a path that he did not expect. He abandons his life in Japan and devotes himself to saving lives in Kenya.

Based on the novel Kaze Ni Tatsu Lion (The Lion Standing in the Wind) by Masashi Sada. The novel itself is based on the song Kaze ni Tatsu Lion, also by Sada, which was inspired by love letters written by the real-life Dr Koichiro Shibata, who ran a mobile clinic in Kenya. The catalyst for this adaptation was actor Osawa Takao, who was so moved by the song that he urged the songwriter to adapt the song into a novel, and then a film. Osawa went on to star as Dr Shibata in this film adaptation.

A powerful tale of courage, compassion that will leave no audience unmoved!Starring Osawa Takao, Satomi Ishihara, Yoko Maki

Sushi will be on sale prior to the screening. The film is preceded by the announcement of the Toronto Japanese Film Festivals 2016 line-up!

The concert brings together three diverse performers for an evening of music like Canadian audiences have never experienced. There will be one performance only in Toronto. The concert will be an extraordinary collaboration of virtuoso performers: combining traditional songs of the Amami Islands, the Tsugaru Shamisen of Aomori prefecture, and the thunderous power of the Taiko drum. The result is an uplifting musical evocation of the Japanese spirit. With their acclaimed mastery of Japanese traditional instruments and art forms, Anna Sato (Vocals), Chie Hanawa (Tsugaru Shamisen) and Keita Kanazashi (Taiko) have joined forces to bring these instruments and sounds to magnificent new levels.

I Will Remember the CentreLegacy News

Only about 7% of Canadians leave a gift to charity in their will. Many are poorly informed about this type of philanthropy and the many possible tax benefits that could increase their cash flow now. Others believe that only the very rich leave gifts to charity in their will, although every gift is important to local charities. Annually the JCCC holds Estate Planning Seminars, speaking to groups about estate and tax planning. These events cover topics such as wills, insurance, gifts of capital appreciated assets, all which relate to sound financial advice for effective tax strategies. Through workshops and seminars offered by the JCCC, members of the Centre and surrounding community have been assisted in their estate planning which will make a lasting mark on the future of the Centre. Estate planning ensures that after death a person’s estate will be distributed in keeping with their wishes. It is estimated that within the next decade more than $1 trillion will move from one generation to the next. The potential for increasing giving through gift planning is enormous and the advantages for the Centre significant. The easiest way to leave a gift to the Centre or a charitable organization is through a bequest in your will. Many people set aside a certain dollar amount, while others leave a percentage of their estate or any assets left over after their family has been provided for. Some people donate something they own, such as a painting or their home. It is possible to leave a paid up life insurance policy, securities, retirement accounts (RRIF/RRSP) or other financial investments. A charitable bequest will not however take effect unless you state your intention in your will. Without a will your family will lose control over your property after death. Your property and finances would then be settled according to provincial laws whether or not they coincide with your wishes. You can also leave your gift in the memory of a person to recognize them as someone who made a difference in your life. This kind of memorial gift can be arranged in your will. The JCCC’s Yesterday Today Tomorrow Campaign is all about leaving a legacy and paying tribute to family, friends and those who have made an impression in our lives. Please note that the information contained in this article is general in nature and is not a substitute for independent legal or financial planning advice. It is the policy of the JCCC and the JCCC Foundation to encourage donors to seek independent professional advice before making a planned gift. To speak to the JCCC about making a planned gift, contact William Petruck on the JCCC Legacy Committee at 416-249-0788 or [email protected], or James Heron, Executive Director at 416-441-2345 ext. 224 or [email protected]. SATURDAY, APRIL 16, 2016JAPANESE CANADIAN CULTURAL CENTRE

The Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre’s Sakura Gala features the best of Canadian and Japanese entertainment and cuisine, in recognition of exceptional contributions made by individuals to the promotion and exchange of Japanese culture and enhancing awareness of Nikkei heritage within Canada and abroad.

This year we celebrate and honour the Asahi Baseball Team, the pride of the Japanese Canadian community from when they were established in Vancouver in 1914 to when the team was disbanded during internment in the 1940s.

The Asahi were an exceptional baseball team because of their commitment to fair play and hard work. They were a powerful inspiration in Vancouver’s Japanese Canadian community. While faced with discrimination off the field, the Asahi could then play baseball, where opposing teams respected their sportsmanship and skill. The team effectively broke down racial and cultural barriers for 27 years. The Asahi team members took these experiences and the uniting spirit of baseball with them to internment camps in 1942 and gave hope to others interned by playing baseball. The team was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003 and the BC Sports Hall of Fame in 2005.

The evening is hosted by CBC Radio’s Mary Ito and features a performance by Nagata Shachu.

Nostalgia Night 2016 Celebrates the Wynford Seniors ClubHeritage Committee

Nostalgia Night will be honouring the Wynford Seniors Club on Sunday July 24, 2016. Please note the change from the usual date of the event. The Wynford Seniors Club, whose purpose is to provide interesting and enjoyable recreation and activities for its members, was started by Dick Takimoto on April 6, 1983 with 34 people in attendance. Now, almost thirty-three (33) years later, with a membership ranging in age from 55 to over 100 years, the Wynford Seniors Club continues to support senior JCCC members offering a variety of activities. Official club meetings are held twice a month from September to June and include easy physical exercises, listening to a variety of presentations, and enjoying the camaraderie of the group. In past years they arranged travel excursions to different cities and entertainment centres, helping out at Caledon Place and at Caravan, learning to line dance, and having their own picnic outings. Today members continue to participate in the Wynford Bowling Leagues, excursions, and volunteering as a group at JCCC events such as the annual Bazaar. The Wynford Seniors Club is a most active and vibrant group who contribute to the community while enjoying social programs. Heritage is very pleased to be honouring the Wynford Seniors Club this year at Nostalgia Night. We hope that you will come out and join us at Nostalgia Night 2016 as we celebrate this amazing group of seniors. Look for more details on registering for this event in the next JCCC newsletter.

    Canadian Tire MoneyHeritage Corner

Canadian Tire money – we all have it, we all love it. But did you know that Fred Sasaki, a prominent member of the JC community, worked at and was Treasurer for Canadian Tire for many

years? Fred started as a stockboy on roller skates in 1944 and worked his way up the ladder. As Treasurer, Fred’s signature appeared on all denominations of Canadian Tire money from 1958 to 1985. One of the initial runs features Sasaki incorrectly spelled as “Saski”. With the current popularity of customer loyalty cards and store points systems, it is only a matter of time before Canadian Tire’s iconic bills will start to disappear from the marketplace. Before that happens, the Moriyama Nikkei Heritage Centre would like to try to compile a collection of Canadian Tire Money featuring Fred’s signature to include as part of our permanent collection. If you think that you have any of these very special bills, please consider donating them to the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre. You can contact us through Reception or at [email protected]. A picture of a 5 cent bill with Fred’s signature is shown here.

Japanese Canadian Art and Artist SymposiumSaturday, April 2nd, 2016JCCC Arts Committee

“By the time we got to WoodstockWe were half a million strongAnd everywhere there was song and celebration” In August 1969, a modest music festival was planned in a farmer’s field in Woodstock, New York – and you know what happened! On Saturday April 2, 2016, a modest art symposium is planned at the JCCC – and we’ll see what happens! Presented by the Arts Committee of the JCCC, the Symposium will bring together JC artists, art professionals, art lovers, and the community to explore our cultural history, and establish connections that will hopefully inspire future projects. With keynote speakers, discussion groups, and some good ol’ fashioned getting to know one another, we want to devote the day to thought and celebration. Our two keynote speakers are: Haruko Okano, interdisciplinary artist born in Toronto, Ontario, now living in Vancouver, B.C. For ten years, Haruko has been curator of the Britannia Art Gallery, a community based gallery located in an east side Vancouver library. Grace Eiko Thomson, independent curator, educator, and cultural historian from Vancouver. In 2000, she opened the Japanese Canadian National Museum with an exhibition, Re-Shaping Memory, Owning History, Through the Lens of Japanese Canadian Redress. From 2004 to 2010, Thomson served on the Executive Board of the National Association of Japanese Canadians, as President and Past President between 2006 and 2010. Attendees will be invited to participate in their choice of two (of six) breakout discussion groups:

Networking strategies:In the early 1990s, Aiko Suzuki produced a directory of JC’s in the Arts. How can we open up connections and develop networking opportunities among JC’s in the arts today?

Promoting JC artists:Strategizing ways to recognize and support the work of JC artists – within our community, and beyond.

JC identity and art:Is JC identity a concern in the art practice of nisei, sansei, yonsei, gosei, and shin-ijusha/shin-issei? What meaning do these labels carry? What is "Japanese Canadian Art"?

Surviving as a JC artist:Sharing experiences and tried and true ways to fulfill creative, spiritual, and financial goals of JC artists.

Exhibit and project ideas:Bring ideas for potential exhibitions, events, and collaborations. This is a focused opportunity to brainstorm "dream projects". JC artists and organizations:There are multiple JC organizations across Canada (including churches and cultural groups) who may have an interest in art and in working with artists. How can we develop this relationship? The hope is that new initiatives, projects, connections, and collaborations will be hatched during the day, as well as nurture and strengthen a common understanding of art in the community. Morning refreshments, a light lunch, bento dinner, cash bar, and live music by Bruce Tatemichi and associates are included in the $20 registration fee (tax included). We don’t expect to be half a million strong, but everywhere will be art and celebration! To register, please visit www.tinyurl.com/JCsymposium, or call JCCC Reception at 416-441-2345. Registration fee may be pre-paid via JCCC Reception in person, by mail, or over the phone. For further information, please contact [email protected], or by phone at 416- 441-2345 ext 303.DEADLINE FOR REGISTRATION: Friday March 18, 2016SPACE IS LIMITED – REGISTER EARLY!

Sideways: Memoir of a MisfitThe Moriyama Nikkei Heritage Centre is pleased to host a book reading with author Diana Morita Cole, a Japanese Canadian who was born in an internment camp in Idaho during World War II. Diana Morita Cole will read from her recently published book, Sideways: Memoir of a Misfit. Her story begins with her birth in Camp Minidoka and portrays the subsequent relocation of her family to Chicago. Growing up in an ethnic ghetto she meets William Minoru Hohri, who led a massive class action lawsuit against the United States and Iva Toguri, who was wrongfully called “Tokyo Rose,” convicted of treason, and subsequently pardoned. The book also reveals the significance of the birth of Roy Miki, whose parents were exiled in Manitoba, and lauds the heroic struggles of the Murakamis of Salt Spring Island. The Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre will host the premiere Ontario screening of the documentary film, Hidden Internment: Story of Art Shibayama. The film, produced by Peek Media in cooperation with the Japanese Peruvian Oral History Project, exposes the kidnapping of 2,200 Japanese Latin Americans from their homes in South America and Central America and their imprisonment the United States. The film discloses Shibayama’s three-decade struggle to gain the

equivalent redress and apology that was granted to Japanese Americans and Japanese Canadians. This event will take place on Wednesday March 16, 2016 at 1:30pm, followed by a Q&A. Sideways: Memoir of a Misfit will be on sale and the author will be pleased to sign your copy. Please join us for a very informative and interesting event.

Remembering Tashme: The Tashme Historical ProjectIn 2016, the Nikkei National Museum will launch the Tashme Historical Project website – a living and evolving interactive repository of historical material on the Tashme Internment Camp that was located near Hope, British Columbia between 1942 and 1946. A detailed historical record consisting of a diverse collection of textual, photographic, graphic, and multimedia materials will be available to anyone with a web browser. A wealth of knowledge is waiting to be discovered by all those interested, and especially the children, grandchildren, and descendants of those who lived in Tashme – who have heard about Tashme all their lives and want to know more. A project goal is to answer the question: "What was everyday life in the Tashme Internment Camp really like?" The project began over two years ago in collaboration with the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre in Toronto through the creation of the Tashme Project Questionnaire and a detailed map of Tashme residents. The Tashme map will soon be available along with an educational brochure produced by the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre. Stay tuned! Since the project launch, a great deal of existing material has been gathered, edited, and organized. With an interactive approach, we hope to attract the interest and assistance of individuals and other groups and organizations, to assist us in collecting additional historical material.
