NAIFA President Terry Headley’sInauguration Address

Orientation Meeting for New andProspective Members

One benefit of being a member of NAIFAis each month I can count on receiving thenational Advisor Today magazine. With eachissue I get a valuable perspective of what’sgoing on in the industry with “New Prod-ucts” (page 10 of the October issue),“Practice Specialties” (pages 12-22) and a“Product Spotlight” (pages 24-26). If you’ve read that far,I’m confident you’ve found something related to your prac-tice that can help you in one fashion or another. If you keepreading, you’re likely to find even more, as that is less thanhalf the content available.

The article I found the most interesting in October wasthe “Viewpoint” on page 8, appropriately titled “What HasNAIFA Done For Me Lately?” It is authored by the NAIFANational President, our very own Terry Headley. If you area dues-paying member and haven’t read it yet, it’s a mustread. Then you simply continue to update yourself on thefollowing pages mentioned above.

By the way, if you can’t find your copy, no problem! Youcan always view issues of Advisor Today online atwww.advisortoday.com. It’s all worth what you pay in dues, and more!

Here are recent reminders of NAIFA’s ad-vocacy efforts with Congress and federalregulators.

NAIFA has:• Preserved a role for agents in selling

health insurance. Original legislationin Congress this spring would haveeliminated any role for agents in thesale of health insurance.

NAIFA-Nebraska Advocacy Highlights• Defeated a Senate attempt to subject

all broker-dealers and their registeredrepresentatives to all the requirementsof the Investment Advisers Act, in-cluding fiduciary duty standards.NAIFA is now lobbying the Securi-ties Exchange Commission to avoidunfair and unnecessary imposition offiduciary standards on registered rep-resentatives.

• Defeated a Senate amendment thatwould have made financial planninga recognized profession and wouldhave subjected all financial plannersto new layers of regulation.

• Gained an exemption for all insuranceproducts and most securities productsfrom the new U.S. Bureau of Con-sumer Financial Protection.

• Prevented the U.S. Secretary ofHealth & Human Services from be-ing able to set all agent commissionson health insurance products.

• Prevented the inclusion of federalhealth insurance program in thehealth insurance reform bill that waspassed this spring and gained the au-thority for states to create their ownhealth insurance exchanges.

At the State level, NAIFA-Nebraska:• Is actively engaged with legislative

committees and the Department ofInsurance as they start to address thestate legislative and administrativechanges that will be required forimplementing health insurance ex-changes. NAIFA-NE will be a lead-ing advocate for the role of the agentand consumer choice.

• Has met with the Governor to pro-vide input on the selection of theState’s new Director of Insurance(Ann Frohman left that position at theend of October).

• Held an “insurance roundtable” dis-cussion with the Governor on Oct.26 in Omaha, providing a private au-dience just for NAIFA-NE leaders andGov. Heineman.
