Editoriale EditorialCorreva l’anno 1561 e Bergamo era al centro di un grandioso progetto – la costruzione delle mura – voluto dal Senato di Venezia e destinato a cambiare il volto della città, quando fu deciso di conservare le antiche lapidi che venivano alla luce nel sottosuolo cittadino depositandole sotto il portico del palazzo della Ragione, a Bergamo alta. L’iniziativa non ebbe poi seguito - a dir la verità i tempi erano prematuri - ma due secoli più tardi la città si premurò addirittura di dare il via a un museo di antichità. Non sono molte le località che possano vantare un tale progetto così lontano nel tem-po: un segnale significativo nella storia di Bergamo che guarda con particolare atten-zione ai suoi musei, alcuni dei quali di importanza nazionale e internazionale. Dai musei luogo di tutela e valorizzazione di patrimoni culturali a un altro patrimonio: quello dei prodotti tipici. Il passaggio può apparire azzardato, ma si tratta pur sempre di prodotti di una cultura locale. Che vale la pena di conoscere e apprezzare.

It was 1561 and Bergamo was in the midst of a grandiose project – the construction of the walls – which was requested by the Venetian Senate and destined to change the face of the city, when it was decided to preserve some old tombstones discovered underground and place them beneath the arcade of Palazzo della Ragione in upper Bergamo. This initiative never came to fruition; it was in fact a plan that was ahead of its time, and it was only two centuries later that the go-ahead was given for a museum of antiquities. Not many places can boast a project that dates so far back in time. This was an important landmark in the history of Bergamo, a city which guards over with particular care its museums, some of which are of national and international importance. From museums, which preserve and valorise cultural heritage, we then move on to another heritage – that of local food and wine products. These may seem unconnected, but they are always products of a local culture, which are well worth getting to know and enjoy.

Nella foto di copertina si può ammirare la facciata del Duomo, il cui titolo di cattedrale fu a lungo conteso con la Basilica di Sant’Alessandro in Città Bassa, reputata luogo del martirio di sant’Alessandro e distrutta nel ‘500 dai veneziani. Continue dispute ed interruzioni hanno reso complesso il processo di realizzazione del duomo, iniziato a metà del ‘400 su progetto del Filarete, ripreso alla fine del ‘600 da Carlo Fontana e modificato nella cupola e nella facciata solo nell’800. Il ricco ed elegante interno è a una navata a croce latina e ospita opere di rilievo tra cui pregevoli affreschi di Antonio Previtali (1524), tele di G. B. Moroni (1576) e del Tiepolo (1743) e un notevole coro intagliato nel legno da J. K. Sanz. In un percorso che attraverso la rappresentazione dei santi, seguaci e testimoni di Cristo, porta all’incontro con la figura di Gesù nell’altare maggiore e nell’abside, il consiglio è di perdersi nell’atmosfera spirituale e nella raffinatezza artisti-ca custodita in questo scrigno, uno tra i tanti gioielli che la città di Bergamo offre ai suoi abitanti e visitatori.

The cover photo shows the façade of the Duomo, whose title of ca-thedral was the subject of a long dispute with the Basilica of Sant’Alessandro in Città Bassa (lower Bergamo), the reputed site of the martyrdom of Sant’Alessandro (St. Alexander) which was destroyed in the sixteenth century by the Venetians. Continuing disputes and inter-ruptions made the construction of the Duomo a complex process. Work began in the middle of the fifteenth century on the design of Filarete, was resumed at the end of the seventeenth century by Carlo Fontana and completed only in the nineteenth century with the con-struction f the dome and façade. The rich and elegant interior has a Latin-cross plan with a single nave and features important works in-cluding exquisite frescoes by Antonio Previtali (1524), paintings by G. B. Moroni (1576) and Tiepolo (1743, and a noteworthy choir carved in wood by J. K. Sanz. Along a tour which, through the depiction of saints, followers and witnesses of Christ, leads to the figure of Jesus on the main altar and in the apse, the advice is to become absorbed in the spiritual atmosphere and artistic finery housed in this treasure trove, one of the many gems that the city of Bergamo offers its inhab-itants and visitors.

Curiosità / Curious facts:Semplici lavori di manutenzione e restauro del Duomo di Bergamo si sono trasformati in quattro anni di delicati scavi archeologici, che hanno svelato un patrimonio artistico di notevole interesse: la pianta delle colonne dell’antica chiesa paleocristiana, mosaici di epoca romana e affreschi e pilastri della cattedrale di epoca romanica. Un vero e proprio tesoro ipogeo, che sarà visitabile grazie all’attuazione di un ingresso dedicato, di un sofisticato impianto di climatizzazione per preservare l’equilibrio interno e di una passerella per osservare i resti delle antiche strutture del Duomo. Simple maintenance and restoration work to the Duomo (cathedral) of Bergamo turned into four years of delicate archaeological excava-tions which revealed an artistic heritage of considerable interest: the plan of the columns of an ancient Paleo-Christian church, Roman mosaics and the frescoes and pillars of a Romanesque cathedral. A genuine underground treasure, which will be open to the public thanks to the construction of a dedicated entrance, a sophisticated air conditioning system to preserve the internal equilibrium, and a walkway to observe the remains of the ancient structures under the building. near the apse of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. The first museum in Bergamo, therefore, dates back more than 250 years, and its aim was to document the city’s history by safeguarding ancient relics and artefacts. It is significant that a century earlier, towards the middle of the six-teenth century, an attempt had already been made to preserve ancient tombstones beneath the Palazzo della Ragione, in Piazza Vecchia. One could think then that with this precedent the Ar-chaeological Museum would be the most important museum in Bergamo. However this is not the case because – and certainly many tourists are already aware of this fact – the most famous mu-seum in Bergamo is the Accademia Carrara Art Gallery with its valuable collection of paintings. It was Count Giacomo Carrara who established the painting school and collection of masterpieces that

Non è così perché - e sicuramente molti turisti già ne sono a conoscenza - il museo di maggior fama a Bergamo è la Pinacoteca dell’Accademia Carrara con la sua prestigiosa raccolta di dipinti. Fu il conte Giacomo Carrara a dar vita alla scuola di pittura e alla collezione di

Among these masterpieces, as well as a vast heritage of age-old relationships between the Bergamask and Venetian artistic world, we can find works by great artists such as Mantegna, Lotto, Moroni, Bellini, Raphael, Titian, Botti-celli, Rubens and Durer. Count Carrara allocated all his assets towards the construction of the neo-classical building, which was inaugurated in 1810 in the old district of San Tommaso. The art gallery is currently closed to the public for extensive restoration and improvement works to the structure, but a significant exhibition of

works has been set up in the Sala delle Capriate in Palazzo della Ragione.Directly in front of the Accademia Carrara stands the GAMeC-Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, which displays a permanent collection of over three hundred works by twentieth-century artists and also offers an extensive programme of cultural initiatives. Inaugurated in 1991, the GAMeC organises popular exhibitions and events which at the same time generate numerous edu-cational activities. In the nearby district of Pignolo, the beautiful Palazzo Bassi-Rathgeb houses the Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art dedicated to the Bishop of Bergamo Adriano Bernareggi, who collected

The City Museum, which documents events in the city from its origins, is located in the former monastery of San Francesco, in Piazza Mercato del Fieno. The Rocca (fort) complex instead houses the History Museum, which focuses on the Risorgimento and Giuseppe Garibaldi. Fi-nally, the Palazzo della Misericordia Maggiore, in via Arena, houses the Donizetti Museum, which is filled with artefacts and mementos of the great composer of timeless operas such as Lucia di Lammermoor.

Bergamo ha avanzato la candidatura per le selezioni italiane del Concorso Bocuse d’Or 2011, la prestigiosa competizione riservata ai migliori cuochi ed intitolata al grande chef francese Paul Bocuse. Il concorso si svolgerà a Bergamo il 15 e il 16 marzo 2010, all’interno di “Cooking”, una nuova rassegna dedicata all’enogastronomia che troverà spazio nel Polo fieristico bergamasco. Sedici saranno i candidati ammessi, uno solo arriverà a Ginevra, sede delle selezioni europee previste a giugno 2010. La finale si svol-gerà a Lione nel gennaio 2011. I sedici chef in gara si ci-menteranno su due temi: l’halibut per la sezione dedicata al pesce e il vitello per quella dedicata alla carne. I piatti sa-ranno sottoposti ad una giuria composta da 24 tra i miglio-ri cuochi italiani; nomi di spicco saranno chiamati a presie-dere e coordinare la selezione. La manifestazione fieristica e il concorso sono promossi dalla Camera di Commercio di Bergamo, dall’Ente Fiera Promoberg, dall’Accademia del Gu-sto, la scuola di alta cucina di Ascom - Confcommercio Bergamo e da Fipe.

Bergamo has put forward its candidature for the Italian selections of the Bocuse d’Or 2011, the prestigious competition reserved for the world’s best chefs and named after the great French chef Paul Bocuse. The competition will be held in Bergamo on 15 and 16 March 2010 on the occasion of “Cooking”, a new event dedicated to food

and wine to be held at the Bergamo Trade Fair Centre. Sixteen candidates will compete but only one will arrive in Geneva, the seat of the European selections planned for June 2010. The final will take place in Lyon on January 2011.The sixteen competing chefs will make dishes based on two themes: halibut for the fish section and veal for the meat section. The dishes will be examined by a jury of 24 of the best Italian chefs; important names will be called to preside over and coordinate the selection. The trade fair and competition are promoted by the Bergamo Chamber of Commerce, the Promoberg Trade Fair Organisation, the “Accademia del Gusto” (Academy of Taste), the Confcommercio Bergamo-ASCOM haute cuisine school and FIPE (Italian Public Service Business Federation).

Alcuni anni fa, in occasione dei lavori per il nuovo impianto di ri-scaldamento, sotto il pavimento del Duomo, nel cuore di Bergamo alta, vennero compiute alcune scoperte di grande importanza per la storia della città. Lo scavo portò prima al rinvenimento di nume-rose tombe, successivamente venne alla luce un tratto di muro con affreschi risalenti al XIII secolo. Si trattava della testimonianza più significativa della basilica romanica, dedicata a San Vincenzo, che precedette il Duomo attuale. Alla scoperta seguirono ricerche che furono ampliate a tutto il sottosuolo. Il risultato dell’indagine ha portato ad accertare che non solo l’edificio romanico era di note-voli dimensioni e che ricalcava il perimetro del Duomo, ma è stata

Several years ago, while work was being carried out on a new heat-ing system under the floor of the Duomo (cathedral) in the heart of upper Bergamo, certain discoveries were made of great impor-tance to the history of the city. Excavations firstly revealed numer-ous tombs and later a section of wall with frescos dating back to the thirteenth century. This turned out to be the important remains of a Romanesque basilica dedicated to San Vincenzo, which pre-dated the present Duomo. Le importanti scoperte sono ora og-getto di studio, mentre si sta lavorando a un progetto per rendere acces-sibile e visitabile il grandioso ambiente sotto il Duomo e le preziose testi-monianze del suo passato. Quasi contemporaneamente, mentre era in corso il cantiere per il recupero e il restauro del palazzo del Podestà, con-traddistinto dalla presenza della Torre Civica, nel sottosuolo dell’edificio sono venuti alla luce importanti resti appartenenti alla Bergamo romana. Grazie a questa scoperta è stata anche individuata con assoluta certezza l’area dove si trovava il foro, sulla cui ubicazione studiosi e ricercatori avevano a lungo formulato le più varie ipotesi.

These important discoveries are currently the subject of further study; meanwhile a project is being developed to make the impressive area with its valuable finds accessible to the public. Almost at the same time, while work was in progress to renovate and restore the Palazzo del Podestà and its distinctive Civic Tower, important remains of Roman Bergamo came to light. Thanks to this discovery, the site of the ancient Roman Forum, which has long been the subject of great discussion among historians and researchers, has now been identified with absolute certainty.

Come per Città Alta è Piazza Vecchia, Porta nuova è il punto focale di Bergamo bassa. Si tratta di un ampio passaggio, af-fiancato da due edifici d’impianto neoclassico, i Propilei, aperto nell’800 nelle mura medievali (demolite nel 1901) per facilitare l’accesso all’antichissima Fiera di Sant’Alessandro che si teneva ogni anno ad agosto. Su questo vasto spazio sorse il nuovo centro di Bergamo, completato nel 1927. Luminoso asse stradale del nuovo centro è il Sentierone, la passeggiata dei bergamaschi, sui cui prolungamenti troviamo, ad est, la via Tasso e, a ovest, la via XX Settembre, al centro di un’anima-tissima area commerciale.In via Tasso sorgono edifici pubblici di buona qualità costruiti nell’Ottocento. Tra questi il palazzo della Provincia (dove sono esposte numerose opere dello scultore bergamasco Giacomo Manzù) e della Prefettura, oltre alla Chiesa di Santo Spirito, con dipinti del Lotto e del Borgognone. Sul Sentierone si affac-ciano la Chiesa di San Bartolomeo (con la celebre pala d’alta-re eseguita nel 1516 da Lorenzo Lotto) e il Teatro Donizetti affiancato dal monumento al grande musicista. Attorno al nuovo centro è andata crescendo la Bergamo moder-na che ha conservato gli antichi borghi sorti sulle direttrici delle principali strade che dalla pianura e dalle valli portavano a Bergamo alta. I borghi sono animatissimi come un tempo, con negozi e botteghe artigiane d’ogni genere, oltre a un gran numero di ristoranti, bar e trattorie.Lungo una delle strade che salgono verso Città Alta, via San Tommaso, è nato agli inizi dell’Ottocento il palazzo dell’Acca-demia Carrara con la Pinacoteca che raccoglie circa duemila opere delle principali scuole pittoriche italiane ed europee. Di fronte la Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea è utiliz-zata per importanti mostre oltre che ad essere sede di esposi-zioni permanenti. Non molto lontano, nel borgo di Pignolo, il Museo Bernareggi d’Arte Sacra.

Porta nuova is the hub of Città Bassa (lower Bergamo) just as Piazza Vecchia is heart of Città Alta (upper Bergamo). This wide gateway, flanked by two neoclassical buildings, the Propylaea, was built in the nineteenth century in the medieval town walls (demol-ished in 1901) to facilitate access to the ancient Sant’Alessandro Fair, which was held each year in August. The new centre of Ber-gamo, completed in 1927, was built on this vast area. The broad thoroughfare of the new centre is the Sentierone, a popular prom-enade for Bergamo’s inhabitants, which extends to the east along Via Tasso and to the west along Via XX Settembre, the fashion-able shopping street.Some well-kept public buildings built in the nineteenth century stand on Via Tasso including the Provincial Authority Building (where numerous works by the Bergamask sculptor Giacomo Manzù are displayed), the Prefecture and the Church of Santo Spirito, with paintings by Lotto and Borgognone. The Sentierone is overlooked by both the Church of San Bar-tolomeo (housing a famous altar-piece by Lorenzo Lotto dating back to 1516) and the Donizetti Theatre, flanked by a monument to the great musician. Modern Bergamo developed around this new centre, and some of the old villages that were established along the principal roads leading to Città Alta from the plains and valleys have been preserved. These places are just as alive today as they ever were, with shops and craft studios, and numerous restaurants, bars and trattorias. Along via San Tommaso, one of the roads that climb towards Città Alta, stands the nineteenth-century building housing the Ac-cademia Carrara and Art Gallery with over two thousand master-pieces from the principal Italian and European schools. Opposite the Accademia is the Modern and Contemporary Art Gallery host-ing important shows as well as being the seat of permanent exhibi-tions. The Bernareggi Museum of Sacred Art is situated in the nearby Pignolo quarter.

Dopo aver visitato i musei in Città Alta, non perdetevi la zona delle gallerie d’arte in Città Bassa, raggiungibile con una piacevole passeggiata. Partendo da Piazza Vecchia imboccate via Gombito e, dopo pochi passi, girate a sinistra in Via San Lo-renzo. Alla fine della via continuate a scendere seguendo le mura fino a Sant’Agosti-no. Qui fermatevi ad ammirare il chiostro, la chiesa e la splendida vista dal parco adiacente; poi oltrepassate la porta omonima e proseguite per via Pignolo. Alla Fontana del Delfino girate a sinistra per via San Tomaso. Avete raggiunto il cuore pulsante delle gallerie d’arte di Bergamo, dove potete contemplare vetrine ricche di oggetti antichi, di design, quadri e molto altro… veri pezzi d’arte! Sarete liberi di ammirare innovative esposizioni e perfino acquistare un ricordo in-solito.Se arriverete in fondo a questa strada non mancheranno altre sorprese: troverete ad accogliervi l’ Accademia Carrara (temporaneamente chiusa per restauro) e la GAMeC (Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea): appuntamenti imperdibili per gli appas-sionati!

After visiting the museums of Città Alta (upper Bergamo), don’t forget the art gallery area in lower Bergamo, which can be reached with a pleasant walk. Starting from Pi-azza Vecchia, take Via Gombito and after a few steps, turn left into Via San Lorenzo. At the end of the road, continue to descend following the walls until you reach the former church of Sant’Agostino. Here you can stop and admire the cloister, the church and the splendid view from the adjoining park. Now pass through Sant’Agostino gate and continue towards Via Pignolo. At the Fontana del Delfino (Dolphin Fountain) turn left down Via San Tomaso. You have now reached the beating heart of the art galleries of Bergamo, where to can contemplate windows filled with antiques, items of design, paintings and much more… genuine works of art! You can stroll around innovative exhibitions and even purchase an unusual souvenir. At the bottom of this road other surprise await you: the Accademia Carrara (temporar-ily closed for restoration) and the GAMeC (Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art): a not-to-be-missed opportunity for enthusiasts!

Piazza Vecchia, per secoli cuore politico e amministrativo di Ber-gamo, è il naturale punto di partenza per visitare la città storica che si è sviluppata sulla collina. Al turista consigliamo, se ne ha possibilità, di incominciare a conoscere Città Alta utilizzando la funicolare, il cui primo impianto risale a 120 anni fa. Dalla stazio-ne di arrivo si esce subito sulla Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe e già qui si è avvolti dalla magica atmosfera di questa città che alterna anguste vie medievali a spazi luminosi. Tipicamente medievale è il percorso di via Gombito-via Colleoni, la strada principale che attraversava la città da est ad ovest. Ed è la via Gombito che con-duce a piazza Vecchia formatasi nel ‘400 lungo la direttrice di quest’asse urbano.Molti gli elementi di grande interesse in questa bellissima piazza. Dalla fontana donata dal podestà veneto Alvise Contarini alla torre civica costruita nel XII secolo, dalla facciata in candido marmo del palazzo della biblioteca civica (costruito nel Seicento come nuova sede municipale) alla mole del Palazzo della Ragione, risalente alla seconda metà del XII secolo. Superata la loggia del palazzo comunale eccoci in un altro spazio, quello della piazza del Duomo sul quale si affacciano la Cattedrale, il Battistero, la Cappella dove è sepolto il celebre condottiero Bartolomeo Colleo-ni, la Basilica romanica di Santa Maria Maggiore, il cui fastoso interno barocco raccoglie un gran numero di opere d’arte. Si va dagli affreschi trecenteschi alle straordinarie tarsie del coro ese-guite su disegni di Lorenzo Lotto, agli arazzi fiamminghi e fioren-tini, alla tomba di Gaetano Donizetti. Proprio la sepoltura del grande musicista offre la traccia per un itinerario tra i luoghi do-nizettiani fino alla sua casa natale nel borgo di Canale, con la possibilità di scoprire angoli del tutto inediti dell’antica città. Un altro itinerario per conoscere storia e luoghi di Bergamo è quello che unisce varie sedi museali: dalla Rocca al Museo della Città nell’ex monastero di San Francesco, ai Musei Archeologico e di Scienze Naturali nel complesso della Cittadella viscontea.

Piazza Vecchia, for centuries the political and administrative heart of Bergamo, is the first place to visit on a tour of Città Alta, the historical city of upper Bergamo that developed high on the hilltop. We recommend you begin your tour of Città Alta by taking the fu-nicular railway, built 120 years ago, which connects the upper and lower towns. The funicular arrives directly in Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe and on leaving the station you are immediately enveloped in the magical atmosphere of the town. Città Alta alternates narrow medieval alleyways with bright open spaces, and the route along via Gombito-via Colleoni, the main thoroughfare running from east to west, is typically medieval. Via Gombito leads to Piazza Vecchia, a beautiful square built in the fifteenth century along the line of this road axis. There are many elements of great interest in this wonder-ful square including the fountain donated by the Venetian podestà Alvise Contarini; the civic tower built in the XII century; the mu-nicipal library building with its white marble façade (built in the seventeenth century as a new town hall), and the Palazzo della Ragione, dating back to the second half of the XII century. Beyond the loggia of the municipal building is another square, Piazza del Duomo, overlooked by the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Chapel where the famous condottiere Bartolomeo Colleoni is entombed, and the Romanesque Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, whose ornate Baroque interior houses a great number of works of art including fourteenth century frescoes, extraordinary marquetry panels created from drawings by Lorenzo Lotto, Flemish and Florentine tapestries and the tomb of Gaetano Donizetti. The tomb of this great musician is the start of an itinerary in discovery of Donizetti, which leads through hidden corners of the old town to his birthplace in the Canale quarter. Another itinerary in discovery of Bergamo’s history unites the various museums: the Rocca (fortress) museum, the City mu-seum in the former monastery of San Francesco and the Archaeo-logical and Natural History Museum in the complex of the Visconti Cittadella.

Sono oltre settanta i prodotti espressione della terra ber-gamasca e delle sue tradizioni più genuine che richiamano l’attenzione dei buongustai. Si va dai formaggi ai vini, dalle farine per la polenta ai funghi, dai salumi all’olio d’oliva, ma ci sono anche grappe e miele, dolci e ortaggi. In alcuni casi si tratta di prodotti molto noti, in altri sono vere e proprie nicchie di qualità da scovare, complici picco-li produttori e rivenditori da individuare con cura. Una specie di caccia al tesoro il cui esito finale è la buona tavo-la. In passato erano stati i formaggi e i vini a detenere il primato tra i prodotti più richiesti. Non a caso i Visconti,

A sua volta Ve-nezia consentì che dai vigneti distribuiti lungo la fascia collinare che va dall’Adda al lago Sebino venissero esportati vini in gran quantità nelle province vicine. Da queste secolari vicende si è poi andata sviluppando una produzione che si è sempre più affermata. In particolare, l’area dei vigneti del vino Valcalepio DOC, rosso e bianco, si estende su un territorio tra i più belli e interessanti non solo dal punto di vista ambientale ma anche storico e artistico. Si va dalla Val Calepio vera e propria, ricca di castelli e splendide dimore, alla piana e ai colli di Almenno, con importanti testimonianze del Romanico. Ma anche la Val San Martino non è da

Un “unicum” è la produzione del Moscato di Scanzo, altro vino di grande qualità con riconoscimento DOP, che nasce sulle colline del comune di Scanzorosciate, un’area molto ristretta quasi alle porte di Bergamo. La coltivazione viene fatta risalire ai Romani o forse prima ancora agli Etruschi. Grande vino da dessert, il Moscato di Scanzo ha una gradazione alcolica non inferiore ai 17 gradi. Anche la produ-zione di formaggi svolge un ruolo importante per far conoscere le tipicità delle valli tra i monti del-le Orobie. Da tempo è conosciuta la Valle Bremba-na per il Branzi e il Formai de mut (formaggio di monte) prodotti sugli alpeggi che vantano pascoli tra i più belli delle Alpi lombarde. Sulle scie della

The San Martino Valley is no less interesting and fea-tures the famous Benedictine Abbey of Pontida and the Sant’Egidio Abbey in Fontanella. A unique example is the production of Moscato di Scanzo, another excel-lent quality wine with DOP (Denomination of Pro-tected Origin) certification, which is made in the hills of Scanzorosciate, a small area close to Bergamo. These vineyards probably date back to the Roman era and maybe even earlier to the Etruscans. A wonderful dessert wine, Moscato di Scanzo has an alcohol con-tent of no less than 17% vol. La polenta è una delle pietanze più famose della terra bergamasca e una delle più fantasiose. Per molti bergamaschi prepararla è ancora un gesto antico, che scalda il cuore, prima ancora di saziare la fame! Si presenta da sola, come contorno a carne, insaccati o ai preziosi funghi della zona, oppure con un cuore di formaggio fuso all’interno- Branzi o Taleggio- ed è conosciuta come “polenta taragna” o ancora in accom-pagnamento ad uccelletti della bergamasca, la famosa “polenta e osei”. Se siete degli inguaribili golosi potrete assaggiarla anche in versione dolce, ricordandovi sempre di abbinarla ad un buon vino locale! Polenta (cornmeal) is one of the most well-known dishes in the Bergamo area and one of the most imaginative. For many Bergamask people preparing polenta is a old activity that warms the heart even before satisfying hunger! Pure ad una antica tradi-zione risale la produzione dell’olio d’oliva che è ripresa con ottimi risultati dalle sponde del lago Sebino alle colline tra i vigneti del Valcalepio e del Moscato di Scanzo. Caratteristica delle colline e delle valli bergamasche è la presenza di ottimi funghi, soprattutto nelle aree dove sono anche diffusi i castagneti. Vanno apprezzati soprattutto con squisiti piatti accompagnati dalla polenta, un’altra tradizione di cui i bergamaschi sono mae-stri. Sempre a proposito di castagneti, d’autunno non sono da trascurare le varie fiere e sagre. Lì c’è la possibilità di degustare, accanto a molti altri prodotti genuini, le saporite caldarroste, che com-paiono anche nel dessert stagionale di molti loca-li. Una curiosità. Variante poco nota delle caldar-roste sono le castagne affumicate (i “biligòcc”): si producono ancora in un paio di località, a Poscan-te in valle Brembana, e nella Valle del Lujo, late-rale della Valle Seriana. Vengono vendute ad alcu-ne sagre che si tengono nel cuore dell’inverno.

The production of olive oil is also an ancient tradition, and this activity has been started again with excellent results along the shores of Lake Sebino to the hills between the vineyards of Valcalepio and Moscato di Scanzo. Another interesting feature of the Bergamask hills and valleys is the presence of ex-cellent mushrooms, particularly in areas where sweet chestnut trees can be found. These are particularly appreciated in exquisite dishes accompanied by po-lenta, another tradition of which the Bergamask people are masters. Speaking of sweet chestnuts, visi-tors to Bergamo and Bergamo province in autumn must pay a visit to one of the fairs or festivals. Here they can taste delicious roast chestnuts, together with many other wholesome products, which also appear as an ingredient in the seasonal desserts of many restaurants. A curiosity: smoked chestnuts (“biligòcc”) are a lesser known variation of roast chestnuts, which are still pro-duced in Poscante in the Brembana Valley and the Lujo Valley, a side valley off the Seriana Valley. These are sold at several festivals in the middle of winter.

Chi fa tappa a Ubiale, piccolo nucleo di case all’inizio della Valle Brembana, ha proprio l’im-pressione di compiere un tuffo nel Medioevo. Questa località, che ebbe una notevole importan-za per i traffici della valle, conserva antiche testi-monianze in un ambiente naturale di grande suggestione. Spicca l’elegante ponte che il conte Attone fece costruire oltre mille anni fa sopra il fiume Imagna, nel punto dove sfocia nelle acque del fiume Brembo. Ad Attone, ultimo conte di Lecco e di Almeno, viene attribuito non solo il progetto del ponte, ma anche la realizzazione del castello di Clanezzo e di una fortificazione sul monte Ubione, che controllava l’accesso alla valle Imagna. Il conte, che sposò la longobarda Ferlin-da, è descritto di animo grande e valoroso: morì nel 975. Oggi una bella passeggiata consente di percorrere il tratto di mulattiera che conduce al

Visitors to Ubiale, a small cluster of houses at the entrance to the Brembana Valley, often feel like they have stepped back into the Middle Ages. This village, which used to be extremely important for trade in the valley, preserves ancient treasures in an extremely beautiful natural setting. One interesting example of these is the elegant bridge built by Count Attone over the River Imagna at the point where it flows into the River Brembo. Count Attone, the last count of Lecco and Almeno, was credited not only with the design of the bridge but also the construction of Clanezzo Castle and a fortification on Mount Ubione which controlled access to the Imagna Valley. The count, who married the Lombard Ferlinda and died in 975, is described as having a great heart and courage. Today a beautiful walk can be taken along a section of mule path leading to the bridge whose rather perilous arch passes over the river. The bank is steep

La mulattiera risale poi un tratto di spon-da del fiume Brembo e sbuca quasi di fronte a una signorile re-sidenza che inglobò in passato i resti del castello che Attone innalzò a Clanezzo. Del castello sopravvivono oggi alcune parti significative, tra cui una torre. L’importanza strategica della lo-calità è confermata dal fatto che la mulattiera scendeva al fiume Brembo in un punto dove un tempo esisteva un traghetto che collegava le due sponde. Al suo posto nel 1925 venne realizzato un ponte sospeso per consentire il transito delle maestranze che lavoravano negli opifici della zona. Il ponte è in uso ancora oggi. Un breve itinerario da Ubiale all’imbocco del fiume Imagna consente di raggiungere i resti del grandioso maglio per la lavo-razione del ferro che rimase in azione fino a mezzo secolo fa. Pur nell’abbandono, il luogo è di grande suggestione.

and one can understand the importance attached to the construc-tion, which was watched over by a tower. The mule path climbs along a section of the River Brembo and emerges almost in front of a beautiful residence which includes the remains of the castle that Count Attone erected in Clanezzo. Certain important parts of the castle survive today, including a tower. The strategic importance of the area is confirmed by the fact that the mule path ran down to the River Brembo to the place where a ferry once connected the two banks. Here, in 1925, a suspension bridge was built for workers to cross to the factories where they worked. The bridge is still in use today. A short distance from Ubiale, at the mouth of the River Imagna, the remains of a magnificent water hammer can be found. This hammer worked iron and remained in operation until half a century ago. Although deserted, the place is extremely interesting.
