Ngong Ping/Tai O Excursion - Leonard Cheung (’94)

Some 40 people, including former principal, teachers, old boys and their families, took part in the Ngong Ping/Tai O excursion on 23 April organised by The Josephian Association.

At 9 am at the Tung Chung Bus Terminal, retired principal Mr. Kenneth Chan, former teacher Ms. Eleanor Hui and other former vice principals and teachers including Mr. King-

Cheung Cheung (大張 Sir),

Mr. Kin-Ping Chow, Mr. William Cheng, Mr. Kai-To Yip, Mr. Tze-Ki Ng, Ms. Grace Chow and Mrs.

Janet Chan were joined by twenty odd alumni and their family members.

The few days leading up to the date of the excursion were rainy and gloomy. But with God’s blessings, the weather finally turned better. We boarded the reserved coach from New Lantao Bus and headed to our first destination – Ngong Ping Market. We visited the Wisdom Path (心經簡

林 ) and the Po Lin

Monastery, relishing traditional Chinese culture and architecture and savouring the delicious dim sum near the Market.

Around 12 noon, we left Ngong Ping for Tai O and arrived there at 12:45 pm. We settled in a seafood restaurant and

had a sumptuous seafood lunch with fresh fish, shrimps, other daily-catches and daily-harvested vegetables. After enjoying the big meal, we branched out into two columns.

Whilst one column went on a dolphin-watching tour, my column roved around Tai O. We walked through the alleys between the famous Tai O stilt houses and reached the mangrove swamp, where we saw small crabs and mudskippers. Then we went back to Tai O town and dropped into a Chinese dessert shop. Principal Chan treated us the famous dessert of Tai O - Shanshui Tofu pudding. We regrouped at the Tai O Bus Terminal around 4 pm and took the reserved coach back to Tung Chung.

Principal Chan told us that he was overjoyed because the excursion reminded him of St. Joe’s school outings in the old days. Back then, it was him who took us on school outings. Now that we were all grown-ups, it was our turn to take him.

It was my pleasure to organise this excursion for our retired teachers and my fellow alumni and I was very glad to see all of us, especially Principal Chan and Ms. Hui, enjoyed the trip very much. I look forward to seeing more retired teachers and fellow alumni on our next excursion.

從 JQ 上得悉潘校長的教學理念：「……但我深信，

只要老師能積極在學術上傳授知識，加上我以行動去鼓勵

及支持同學們，他們必會被打動，從而更全情投入、更有

目標及努力地為公開試作出充足的準備。」

當年的我就是需要被「打動」的一個學生。已故的李

漢良老師亦曽經一對一向我苦勸，想我回頭渡岸、讀好書

出人頭地。但很可惜，當年我讀書的動力完全出自老媽子

的藤條上，誰也收服不到這隻「孫悟空」。

最接近收服我的，應該是當年教聖經，所有同學稱為

「聖人」的 Paul 張老師。

話說有一次闖下了離天大禍，班主任要見家長，此乃

僅次於被趕出校的極刑，亦有可能是被趕出校的前奏曲。

老媽子知道後勃然大怒、覺得是奇恥大辱，準備見完老師

後就家法伺候。翌日抱著視死如歸的心情與母親一起去到

教員室，坐下不久，班主任就準備拉弓引箭，危在旦夕。

就在我這弱小心靈感覺到生無可戀的一剎那，坐在旁

邊的張老師突然殺了出來，攔途勸諫，為我講了一句令我

至死難忘的説話：「其實唐敬光好聰明㗎，係頑皮少少。」

世上有那一個母親不愛聽到自己的子女是聰明，更何況是

出自「亞 Sir」口裏。母親聽後頓時歡容、如嘗甘露，而

班主任老師亦知道有同輩老師出手拯救，或有可能他也被

這仁義之師所感染，殺念盡消，把弓箭收回、放生從仁。

在我當時來說，這真是一個「聖人」的奇蹟！

此事在我畢生難忘，令我深深感受到一個春風化雨教

師的真心關懷。數年後，可能為了報答張老師，在 70 年

會考聖經科上考取了唯一的 credit，當時沒有考慮去做神

父，所以作用不大，其他科目就不堪一提。四十八年來未

曾正式多謝過張老師對我之恩，在此衷心明謝。

畢業後展轉漂洋到美國去讀書，很慚愧，要在大學讀

remedial math 去收復當年 St. Joe 的失地。當年是留學生，

要自供讀、生活窘迫。一個晚上想起了李老師當年的苦勸，

不禁涙流，只歎忠言逆耳、時光不能倒流。最後僥倖入了

Computer Sciences，墜入電網中，一去四十年。

現在已是花甲年華，回望一生，在 St. Joe 的日子是

我人生最快樂和最痛苦的時候。快樂的是一班同學（尤其

是懶讀書的一班）一起「直升機」渡過童年。痛苦的是只

為向老媽子交代而讀書，沒有目標、讀得很沒趣。很奇怪，

年紀大了反而求學和求知的精神逾增，現在「狗屎垃圾」

都要研究分析一番。若然當年有這份求學精神，相信現在

閒閒地有兩、三個博士學位在手

在此奉祭自己為負面教材，更展望潘校長成功將這羣

「孫悟空」學弟納入正軌。

當年與好友秋遊遠足拍攝，畢業後變成竹林戰友，每

週十二圈。數年後各奔前程，其中二人從此失聯，在此順

帶借宿尋人。

Appreciation to Teachers Extended Overseas

- Peter Yeung (’75), Andrew Lee (’86) On 16 June, several old boys (Matthew Poon, Simon

So, Peter Yeung and Huen Yu) and former teachers (Mr. Moti Dayaram Mr. Raphael Ng and Mr. Nai-Kit Tsien,) of St. Joe got together for a dim sum lunch in Markham,Toronto. JA Chairman Peter Yeung (’75) presented the commemorative plates prepared by the JA to Moti, Raphael and Mr. Tsien. Simon (’86) further presented the commemorative pin of the 30-year reunion of 86 old boys to Moti and Mr. Tsien.

Incidentally, this turned out to be a joint Catholic School gathering: Raphael, Moti, Mr. Tsien, and Matthew were Peter’s teachers at St. Joe; Raphael, Moti and Peter’s

Son, Angus were La Salle old boys; Matthew, Huen, Simon and Peter were St. Joe old boys. Yet, Matthew had spent some of his primary years at Good Hope and Huen, studied F.6 there, and they together with Peter’s

wife and daughter, Carol and Judy, and Mandarin, Carol’s classmate made Good Hopers the largest contingent at the gathering!

Though Raphael left St. Joe in the middle of his career, he was very much concerned with the well-being of the alumni association in Toronto. After the gathering, he sent out bulks of emails rallying for the support of the Josephians there so as to reinvigorate the alumni association. Bro. Paul Sun

must have left a deep impression on him to make him feel duty bound. May we wish our alumni association in Toronto will shine and prosper once again.

Later in the month on the 22nd, Simon joined by Matthew, paid a visit to Mr. Chow-Ping Wong at his home and presented him the commemorative plate.

Special thanks to Simon who brought the rather heavy but fragile commemorative plates all the way from Hong Kong to Toronto.

師友計劃的回顧與展望 -鄧文偉老師

2009 年，在校友李志尚的牽頭下，【聖若瑟英文中

學師友計劃】（SJACS Mentorship Scheme）於觀塘道

61 號正式啟動。

這個計劃的目的是希望為本校高中同學提供一個課堂

以外的學習體驗。透過會晤的方式，同學和校友可以在一

個輕鬆的環境下，由校友擔當導師（Mentor）的角色，關

顧一下自己的學弟（Mentee），跟他們分享自己專業領

域裏的知識和工作經驗，甚至是自己從前的學習生涯；而

同學可以就學業、

工作世界、人際

關係以及生活上

的各種問題提出

詢問，從而拓展

自己的視野，以

助他們全人發展，

在日後升學選科

及工作世界有一

個最新的認知，

配合現今社會發

展的要求。近年【師友計劃】更著力給

予同學工作體驗的機會，難得上年參與

計劃的同學就能得到這些寶貴的機會

（小學助教）。

參加【師友計劃】的校友來自各界

別，包括法律界、工商界、教育界、醫

學界、金融界、體育界、紀律部隊等等。各位校友於各行

各業各有所成，當中更有社會知名人士，如現任海洋公園

行政總裁李繩宗先生。

【師友計劃】由當年協助校友會舉辦直至近年來由本

校升學及就業輔導組主理。而今年【師友計劃】已踏入第

七年，參加的同學已接近 500 人；而本人最欣慰的是當年

參與計劃的同學（Mentee），今天已有能力擔任導師

（Mentor）角色，輔助自己的學弟。而支持【師友計劃】

的校友亦達 130，充分體現聖若瑟大家庭「力行仁愛」的

精神。

回想【師友計劃】開始推行的時候，同學是自由參與

的，因此多年以來（2009-14）參與的同學人數有多有少。

猶記得第二年的【師友計劃】，當年同學的反應踴躍；就

人數而論，便超過一百之數，而支持的校友亦達三、四十

人。當日禮堂的鼎盛場面，本人至今仍歷歷在目；而且在

舊校禮堂舉辦，更添歷史意義。然而往後三年（2011-

14），參與計劃的同學未算積極。雖然仍能達到計劃的目

的，但我們相信可以做得更好。直至潘永强校長於 2014

年上任後，他銳意發展【師友計劃】，希望這個計劃能惠

及更多的同學。自 2015 年起，在完成招募校友的工作後，

所有中五級的同學都會根據自己填寫將來的職業／工作的

意願，被編入一位參與計劃的校友的組別，讓同學在所屬

工作上多作了解。

新計劃推行了一年後，今年亦有一個優化措施，

就是由以往一位校友帶領七至八位同學，改為兩位，

甚至三位（屬同一職業範疇）的校友與約十位同學

合組，成為一個更大的組合，本人相信這個安排可

提高校友與同學之間的互動性，雙方所獲的會更多

更全面，而這亦是本人對計劃將來發展的願景。這

個安排，大家認為如何？

當然，這個計劃仍保留一

位校友帶領同學的方式。

其實，本人可以有這個安

排，有賴更多校友的支持

和參與。本人在此亦作出

呼籲，如有興趣參加【師

友計劃】的校友，可與本

近年除了在職的校友，本人亦積極招募於各大

專院校讀書的「St Joe 仔」擔任 Mentor，目的就是提供

大學生活和學習的現況，讓一眾的中五同學對未來的升學

有多一個詢問的渠道，因為我校有不少中五同學都非常著

緊自己的學業。

師友計劃雖為期一年，但本人深信這只是一個開始，

是沒有終結的。本人期望小組內的校友和同學經過一年的

相處後繼續有溝通，而這才是【師友計劃】的最終目標。

俗語有云：「一隻筷子易斷，一束筷子難斷。」一個

人的想法始終有限，期望將來有更多曾參與 / 參與其中的

校友不吝指教，給予此計劃更多的構思、意見，集思廣益，

令更多同學受益受惠。

薪火相傳就靠大家了！加油、努力！

Saving 61 Kwun Tong Road

- Andrew Lee (’86) Built on government granted land and with funds

borrowed from/raised through the Catholic diocese, old boys, parents, etc., the now decommissioned secondary school campus of SJACS at 61 Kwun Tong Road had been home to the secondary section since 1968. Sadly, since the move to the new campus on Clear Water Bay Road in 2011, the old campus has been relegated to a “deserted” government premise (under the Government Property Agency) without any purpose or future. May I implore our fellow Josephians to try to help save this place that used to be our second home?

For decades, the old secondary school campus had nurtured tens of thousands of Josephians. As the saying goes, “all good things must come to an end.” Its lifelong mission finally came to a glorious end – on 2 January 2011, a “light-out” ceremony was organised to bid farewell to the old campus. Throughout the day, Josephians continuously

flocked in to reminisce our good old days and to say good-bye. In the evening, at the “light-out” ceremony, the school was literally packed with Josephians who came to witness this historical moment and show our appreciation.

Years have gone by since the move to the new campus. The abandoned old campus still serenely perched alongside the primary school campus on Kwun Tong Road. Even though the signs of the name of our Alma Mater have long been removed, the markings they left behind are still plainly visible. Indeed, the old campus has never been forgotten. Over the years, news about it has been shared among various chat groups of St. Joe old boys and in such social media as Facebook. Sadly, such news tends to be rather negative, heart-rending even, to St. Joe old boys, e.g., the premise was vandalized, entered unlawfully or used for police exercise.

All along, there have been voices among the old boy community that call for preserving or rejuvenating our old campus. Some suggest that it can be turned into an incubator for innovative technology or a home to workshops for design, culture and art, and the school hall can be utilized by various stage arts groups for practice and rehearsal. Yet another suggestion proposes to move the primary section into the old secondary school campus.

When the current primary school building was designed and built in the mid-1980s, the primary section was still run as a half-day school. Later as whole-day primary schooling became the norm, the primary section of St. Joe also transformed itself into a whole-day school, even though doing so effectively halved the amount of space available and therefore halved the student population. Meanwhile, extra-curricular activities have

also become more and more important in primary schooling, giving rise to a greater demand for space. Thus moving the primary section into the old secondary school campus may appear to be a plausible proposition.

Undoubtedly, saving the old secondary school campus or moving the primary section there is an insurmountable undertaking. If we St. Joe old boys can come together, maybe we can overcome the insurmountable. The Josephian

Association hereby appeals to all St. Joe old boys to offer your suggestions and/or lend your helping

hand regarding the preservation or rejuvenation of the old secondary school campus of St. Joe. From understanding the current state of the building and the relevant laws and regulations, to dealing with government departments, filing applications, and to assisting the primary section or planning for other purposes, these are merely some of areas that we need all St. Joe old boys’ help.

This issue of JQ features several seemingly unrelated articles: King Tong (’70)’s story – one that will likely make you look back on your own days at SJACS, the article that calls upon all old boys to help save our old secondary school campus – an incredibly daunting, but not impossible, task, and Mr. Tang’s article on SJACS’s mentorship scheme. Yet, there’s a thread that runs through them: the St. Joe spirit that Bro. Paul Sun has afforded us. As abstract as it may seem, I hope you agree that it is something that resonates in the heart of every Josephian. Let’s keep it alive in all of us!
