Hi there all,

Almost June and like me, you’re probably wondering where the year is going!

‘Lot’s happening in the next few weeks and of course, the long awaited Diamond Jubilee, celebrating Queen Elizabeth II’s 60 year reign. This achievement is marked with a Bank Holiday on the 5th June, tailing on from the usual Spring Bank Holiday - a fantastic long weekend is in sight!

I am looking forward to a fine Summer of sport, with football’s European Cup and our very own Olympics. If however, football and athletics is not your thing, then of course, there’s always the garden!

Enyoy the sunshine (when it appears!)

The warmth of summer can feel great, especially after a long winter and a particularly wet spring! Some people, though, feel worse in the heat, and find that hot weather aggravates certain health conditions.

One central aspect of Chinese medical diagnosis is the differentiation between illnesses caused by cold in the body, and those caused by heat. Many people feel much, much better in the summer; everything from joint pain to depression to

menstrual cramps eases in the warm weather. People with internal heat, however, often struggle with the hot season.

If you’re still having trouble, there are

great acupuncture points to release heat and restore a more neutral body temperature. Summer can be the best time to treat heat-related

conditions, both for immediate relief and lasting effect.

Happy gardening but if at any time help is needed with those gardening aches and pains (or any other for that matter!) do not hesitate to call the Chestnut Osteopaths for help on 01295 713666.

We love our gardens and spend a considerable amount of time and money on them. As we rush to get those jobs in the garden done, there is a risk that we may injure ourselves. What everyone wants is to be fit and healthy enough to actually enjoy sitting in their garden and enjoy the fruits of their labours come summer time, so here are some helpful tips to help prevent injuy.Warm Up➢ Gardening is like any other exercise; you need to warm up first. Don’t go straight into heavy garden work; start off with lighter jobs as this will lessen the chance of muscle strain.Weeding➢ Do not bend over the beds to get at the weeds. Instead place one foot in the bed to take some of the body weight allowing you to keep your back straight. Invest in a hoe if you have large beds and take regular breaks.Clever pruning➢ Get as close as possible to the things you are pruning and avoid overstretching to reach the area you are dealing with.➢ Invest in some long handled secateurs to reach plants and bushes that are beyond normal reach.Take a break from repetitive activity➢ Vary your activity by spending no more than 20-30 minutes on any one thing and make sure you take regular breaks.➢ Be aware of your posture and try to

keep hips and shoulders in alignment and ideally above each other. If you do have to do repetitive work using one side of the body, balance it out by using the other side aswell alternately. Be clever with the paving➢ If laying a patio, keep the slab close to your body and bend your knees; it is sometimes better to bend one knee rather two, as your supporting leg gives you a position of strength. Ensure the shoulders and hips are above each other before you take the strain of lifting.Plan ahead➢ If you are planning a trip to the local DIY store to buy heavy items such as cement or gravel, buy smaller bags rather than one big bag as they are easier and safer to carry.➢ If buying things like compost, sand or gravel in bulkier amounts, shovel the contents of the large bags straight into smaller containers or wheelbarrow from the back of the car.➢ Don’t lift with your arms straight out, keep the elbows bent and to your side to minimise the stress on your back.➢ A specialist garden trolley might be

worth investing in to move these sorts of materials around, especially if you have lots of patio pots to move around as well.➢ A double strap back support is a worthy investment for a keen gardener. Wear it to protect the back when lifting heavy objects or to give the low back some extra support. It should be worn for no longer than a couple of hours at a time and can be purchased from Chestnut Osteopathic Practice or online at stores such as ‘Amazon’.

The pupils at LoveBallet Dance Company have been kept on their toes this month - there has been the Easter Dance School, Examinations at the end of April and New ZumbAtomic Classes in May, but busy is the way we like it.The Easter Dance School ran during the Easter Holidays on April 11th and 12th and was another huge success, it provides a great opportunity for children to have a taste of lots of different dance and theatre genres. We ran workshops on Street Dance, Musical Theatre, Acting & Performance, Modern Jazz & Theatre Craft, ZumbAtomic and Gymnastics all in 2 days! Our Easter and Summer Schools are open to all children from 6yrs+ and we have great feedback from both parents and pupils alike about how much they all enjoy themselves and learn so much. We work towards a short performance on the last day in which parents are invited to come along to watch and the children get to perform on stage and show off their new found skills too. We are running a Summer Dance School in July on Wednesday 25th and Thursday 26th at the Grange Hall in Southam from 10.30am – 1.30pm both days, just £35 per child for both days.On Sunday 29th April we had a very busy exam centre with over 70 pupils taking their Ballet and Tap exams, boys and girls alike ranging from 4 years upwards. The pupils had been

working very hard to master the technique required and displayed some excellent work on the exam day itself, the examiner had travelled from Cambridge and made some very nice comments about their work. Once the pupils take an exam, they move up a grade to the next level which really boosts their confidence and self esteem as well as progressing their dance ability. Its going to be a busy summer ahead for LoveBallet Dance Company and its pupils, with new ZumbAtomic Classes starting too. ZumbAtomic is Zumba but for children, specific kid friendly routines jam packed with fun, it’s a absolutely brilliant class for all ages for both boys and girls – they will love it I can guarantee. Come along for a free trial to see what its all

about and join in the fun. Classes Wednesdays in Upper Boddington from 4yrs+ and Fridays in Southam. If that’s not enough to get your heart racing, we are also working towards our LoveBallet Show, an Olympic Themed Show this year which will take place in July, all pupils are welcome to take part in the show and it’s a wonderful opportunity for pupils to dance on stage under the lights and perform to their hearts content watched by the proud eyes of their parents and loved ones. For more information about LoveBallet Dance Company please visit www.loveballet.co.uk or call Lorraine on 07711 010404 or email [email protected]

Broaden your Marketplace...advertise in Southam & Villages and Leamington & Warwick editions

I can highly recommend the Express Press, both in terms of advertising with them and using their design and print service. I have regularly advertised in all of their editions, (which I first started six years ago in the Southam & Village edition) and receive a lot of enquiries from the adverts I place. They are both friendly and professional and a pleasure to work with. If you are in need of a boost to your business, give them a go!

May is a capricious month, one day lulling you into a sense of security with balmy temperatures and sunshine, and then next day surprising you with a sharp frost. However tempting it is to get all those plants you have lovingly grown (or bought) planted outside, this is a time when you need to be cautious. Frosts have been known in this region as late as the end of May so be prepared and have fleece at hand to tuck round sensitive plants when the forecast looks dodgy. Winds can cause havoc with taller plants or those with heavy blooms, and now is a good time to establish your supports for the plants to grow through. Using canes, twigs or purpose made support structures will ensure any inclement weather doesn’t ruin your herbaceous displays. Peonies have

particularly striking, opulent blooms and benefit from being supported so you can get the benefit of their romantic beauty. If there’s one thing young plants need, it’s the right irrigation. In view of current water shortages we should all be diligent in using water as economically as possible. Mulching exposed soil with decorative bark will prevent precious moisture evaporating. Try cutting the bottom off a plastic drinks bottle and up ending it in the ground at the base of crops like courgettes so the water goes directly to the roots where it’s needed. Only water at night so the plants get a chance to take up the moisture before the sun starts evaporating it. And use as much ‘grey’ water from washing up etc as you can. Finally, choose plants which respond well to drier

conditions. The lovely peony, for instance, is surprisingly drought tolerant once it’s established. Lavenders, Hebes, Perovskia, Nicotiana, Geraniums all thrive in dry conditions. The list is too long to mention here so when you come into Country Secrets just ask and we’ll let you know which are the best cultivars to buy.Other jobs to do in the garden: When tying in climbing roses

try to get the stems to go as horizontal as possible to encourage more blooms. Apply a liquid fertiliser to bulbs

to a store up energy for next year’s flowering. Earth up potato plants as they

grow. Roses are prone to all sorts of

problems and will benefit from regular spraying against pests and diseases. Timetable a fortnightly application to ensure top performance.
