User Requirements
Requirements for the HIE-experimentsInfo needed on:
• Power consumption• Cooling & ventilation• Cryogenics• Alignment & spacing (nr of racks)• Sensitivity to radiation, temp & vibrations• Transport requirements

Controlled access
Controlled accessOptions under study:
• Close the hall
• Restricted area• Controlled access• Beam interlock
Hie-Isolde layout, 2nd PCG meeting, 6 May 2011 E. Siesling 12
Radio Protection issues
MiniballSpectrometer Actar / HeliosMiniball
Options under study:
• Close the hall• Shielding
• For each experiment Allowing access to others during a run• Individual beams interlocked
Beam interlocked access
10MeV/c
Hie-Isolde layout, 2nd PCG meeting, 6 May 2011 E. Siesling 13
Radio Protection issues
MiniballSpectrometer Actar / HeliosMiniball
Options under study:
• Close the hall• Shielding • Limited intensity
• To stay within RP restrictions• many elements will be produced at low intensity anyway..
Limited beam intensity
10MeV/c
Hie-Isolde layout, 2nd PCG meeting, 6 May 2011 E. Siesling 14
Radio Protection issues
MiniballSpectrometer Actar / HeliosMiniball
Options under study:
• Close the hall• Shielding • Limited intensity• Open access
• If studies prove safe levels• No restricted access
10MeV/c

Studies
Existing models to calculate neutron and gamma doses from low energy heavy ions:
-NEUGAM code
-PHITS calculations
-FLUKA calculations
: conservative code, no expertise at CERN
: suitable for HIE-Isolde but not validated (nothing to compare to)
: expertise at CERN

Studies & collaborations
CEA-CERN collaboration - Thanks to Y.KadiPHITS Calculation on neutron and gamma production from low energy heavy ions - Meeting was held on the 13th of April with DSM/IRFU/SENAC to define potential collaboration
Fellow Marie-CurieNEUGAM, PHITS, FLUKA Calculation comparaison on neutron and gamma production from low energy heavy ion - Advertisement for a fellow position went out for an experienced candidate to perform all the detailed calculations
ANL-CERN collaboration - Thanks to M.HuyseNEUGAM code to calculate neutron and gamma dose, courtesy of B. Back (ANL)- Typical beam species intensity/energy to be defined for RP analysis

User Facilities1. Increasing the surface of the Solid State Lab in building B.115:
For RP safety reasons all solid state activities will be moved from B.275 to B.115This will suppress the existing workshop in B.115 and courtyard between B.115 and B.601
2. Replace the existing building 507 by a new building :Ground floor (only accessible from within the surveyed area):
- Labs and workshopFirst floor (accessible from outside the surveyed area):
- Data Acquisition rooms- Meeting room/Visitors Center - Kitchen
Cost study ongoing:Eliseo Perez-Duenas GS/SE

Cost studies new B 507Cost studies and civil engineering plans by Eliseo Perez-Duenas GS/SE
No signs of asbestos found in the existing building
Phase 1: estimate 120kChf- dismounting the present building- construction permit- adapting the concrete foundation
Phase 2: estimate 1.8MChf 1MChf- construction of the new concrete building- total surface 780 m2 460 m2
- not taken in account electrical installations, CV, Labo’s, etc.
Construction during long shutdown 2013?

Study on the use of modular cabins instead of a full concrete building
Phase 1: estimate 120kChf- dismounting the present building- construction permit- adapting the concrete foundation
Phase 2: estimate 520kChf- installation of modular cabins, interconnected and on 2 floors - total surface 460 m2
- not taken in account electrical installations, CV, Labo’s, etc.
Advantages: - lower costs- fast construction- flexible work floor

Example modular cabins at the AD at CERN:
DAQ and experiment control rooms moved outside the AD hall for RP reasons
- First 6 cabins, more to add- Second floor foreseen- Inside configuration flexible
