Interested  students  and  parents  are  all  welcome  to  join:  please  book  a  place  by  sending  an  email  to  Ms.  K  (akurokawa@hiroshima-‐is.ac.jp).      Flu,  etc.  and  hygiene  As  mentioned  in  my  e-‐mail  to  parents  earlier  in  the  week,  there  has  been  a  small  ‘spike’  in  the  incidence  of  flu,  fever  and  other  sickness  in  the  school  community,  The  incidence  is  remaining  steady:  it  has  not  yet  reached  even  50%  of  the  rate  of  last  year,  when  we  decided  to  close  school  in  order  to  break  the  cycle  of  infection.  At  this  stage  we  do  not  see  any  reason  to  close  the  school  but,  of  course,  will  continue  to  monitor  the  situation.      We  all  need  to  remain  aware  of  both  good  hygiene  and  sickness  practices.      The  symptoms  of  ‘flu  include:

• High  temperature  (fever).  • Sweats.  • Aches  and  pains  in  muscles  and  joints.  • A  dry  cough.  • Sore  throat.  • Sneezing.  • Headache.

The  CDC  in  the  United  States  recommends  the  following  actions  if  you  have  flu  symptoms:

Stay  home  when  you  are  sick.  If  possible,  stay  home  from  work,  school,  and  errands  when  you  are  sick.  You  will  help  prevent  others  from  catching  your  illness.  Avoid  close  contact  with  people  who  are  sick.

Cover  your  nose  and  mouth  with  a  tissue  when  you  cough  or  sneeze.  Throw  the  tissue  away  after  use  and  wash  your  hands.  If  a  tissue  is  not  available,  cover  your  mouth  and  nose  with  your  sleeve,  not  your  hand.

Wash  your  hands  often  with  soap  and  water,  especially  after  you  cough  or  sneeze.  If  soap  and  water  are  not  available,  use  an  alcohol-‐based  hand  rub.

Avoid  touching  your  eyes,  nose,  or  mouth.  Germs  spread  this  way.

Clean  and  disinfect  surfaces  or  objects.  Clean  and  disinfect  frequently  touched  surfaces  at  home,  work  or  school,  especially  when  someone  is  ill.

From  the  perspective  of  the  school,  the  most  important  of  the  above  is  for  parents  to  keep  children  at  home  if  they  are  sick,  whether  with  ‘flu  or  any  other  disease.  Every  year  we  hear  one  or  more  students  tell  us  something  along  the  lines  of  “I  told  my  dad/mum  I  was  not  feeling  well  but  they  are  too  busy  to  stay  at    home  and  look  after  me.”  Clearly,  this  is  not  helpful  and  we  urge  parents  not  to  send  any  sick  child  to  school.  For  the  school’s  part,  we  will  be  urging  all  students,  staff  and  visitors  to  observe  good  hygiene  prac-‐tices  and  will  be  ensuring  that  the  recommendations  re.  cleaning  and  disinfecting  frequently  touched  sur-‐faces  and  objects  are  implemented.
