Reading Week Last week was Reading Week at HIS and the theme was “Reading is Thinking.” Students had the opportuni-‐ty to participate in a variety of reading activities throughout the week, including an author visit, book dis-‐cussions, storytelling, quizzes, etc.
Check out more photos on the school’s Facebook page. Thanks to Ms Sallie, Mr Underwood and Bryan sensei for organising a great week of events. Interested students and parents are all welcome to join: please book a place by sending an email to Ms. K (akurokawa@hiroshima-‐is.ac.jp). Flu, etc. and hygiene As mentioned in my e-‐mail to parents earlier in the week, there has been a small ‘spike’ in the incidence of flu, fever and other sickness in the school community, The incidence is remaining steady: it has not yet reached even 50% of the rate of last year, when we decided to close school in order to break the cycle of infection. At this stage we do not see any reason to close the school but, of course, will continue to monitor the situation. We all need to remain aware of both good hygiene and sickness practices. The symptoms of ‘flu include:
• High temperature (fever). • Sweats. • Aches and pains in muscles and joints. • A dry cough. • Sore throat. • Sneezing. • Headache.
The CDC in the United States recommends the following actions if you have flu symptoms:
Stay home when you are sick. If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness. Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue away after use and wash your hands. If a tissue is not available, cover your mouth and nose with your sleeve, not your hand.
Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-‐based hand rub.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs spread this way.
Clean and disinfect surfaces or objects. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school, especially when someone is ill.
From the perspective of the school, the most important of the above is for parents to keep children at home if they are sick, whether with ‘flu or any other disease. Every year we hear one or more students tell us something along the lines of “I told my dad/mum I was not feeling well but they are too busy to stay at home and look after me.” Clearly, this is not helpful and we urge parents not to send any sick child to school. For the school’s part, we will be urging all students, staff and visitors to observe good hygiene prac-‐tices and will be ensuring that the recommendations re. cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched sur-‐faces and objects are implemented.

PTA News During that PTA meeting today we voted on a request made to use PTA funds for the purchase of new vid-‐eo camera equipment. JPY37,389 will be used for this purchase. The video equipment will be used to film the PYP Exhibition, the Spring Concert and Festive Eve. Of particular interest to parents, the equipment will also be used to video tape parent workshops, website marketing, and sharing of best practice at HIS. Spirit Week is happening April 11 -‐ April 15! This is a week full of fun and creative ways to express yourself while promoting school spirit. The PTA is organizing parking again this year for the Carnival. Please look for a letter to come home ex-‐plaining this. Parking will cost JPY1500 and be offered on a first come first serve basis, please consider making arrangements for carpooling if possible.
Babysitting will be available for children in G1 and younger, thanks to our volunteers! A sign up sheet will be sent home for those wanting to use this service. We still need lots of volunteers to staff it!
From the International Deli Team (日本語は下にあります) Volunteers Needed for International Deli at HIS Carnival 2016 The PTA have decided to run the International Deli (AKA “Bake Sale” for new folks!) at this year’s Carnival, and the Deli Team from the last Festival have agreed to step up again. Takaco Takeno, Chikako Nakayama and Jackie Ikegami would like to invite all you closet Martha Stewarts out there to donate a batch or two of your most popular home baked treats to be sold on April 16th at the International Deli counter to raise funds for the event. There are 3 ways to help: 1) Bake some treats at home, wrap them individually and bring them to school on Friday April 15th. Please
wrap in portion sizes that can be reasonably sold for at least ¥100. (If they are very small, put 2 or 3 in a package). Please let us know if you are baking something in advance, so we can gauge how much we will have to sell.
2) Come and join us in the school kitchen any day the week before the Carnival for as short or as long a time as you are able to, and we can have a laugh baking and getting ready together. You can bring your own recipe and ingredients, or come and help us with what we are baking. KITCHEN SCHEDULE MONDAY: 9:30am to 2:30pm TUESDAY:9:30am to 2:30pm WEDNESDAY 2:30pm -‐5pm THURSDAY: 9:30am to 5pm FRIDAY: 9:30pm till 1pm then 4pm till ready PLEASE CALL JACKIE OR CONTACT THE DELI TEAM ONLINE BEFORE COMING TO MAKE SURE PLANS HAVE NOT CHANGED.
3) Help out selling the baked goods on the day of the Carnival. We would ideally like to have between 8 to 10 volunteers on the day. Please contact Jackie ([email protected]‐net.ne.jp or 09078909464 ) if you would like to volunteer.
