South PorcuPine (Spe-cial) - the Pedersen Pee Wees travelled to South Porcupine for the ice Breaker tournament, held october 1-2.
the round robin play was a good start to the season for the Puckhounds, who were in tough dur-ing the semifinals against the norfab Snipers.Hearst 5 Pedersens 3
the first game of the tourna-ment was filled with excitement and could have been won by ei-ther team.
casey ton opened the scor-ing for the Puckhounds to tie the game in the first, assisted by newcomer Jagger Allen.
in the second, timothy Ped-ersen scored his first of the year assisted by Mason Axcell. Shortly after, Devin Williamson scored to tie the game.
hearst had two unanswered goals to secure the win.Pedersens 13 CoCHrane 0
Game two’s action was all in the offensive zone.
ton scored his first hat trick of the season, followed by two goals for David Dedo. Singles to Devin Adams, calvin char-trand, Spencer Dupuis, Jordan Legros, Alex Maille, robbie
Popkie, Axcell and Williamson.the shutout was awarded to
Ben caldwell. Pedersens 4 KaPusKasing 0
the solid defensive work of clark Allair, Kody McDonald, Ad-ams, Axcell and chartrand was put to the test and proved flawless against Kap.
G o a l t e n d e r tristyn elford was
sharp and always there for the save. the players stuck to the game plan and showed patience and good teamwork.
it was only midway through the second when Dedo opened the scoring, followed by char-trand, Legros and Popkie.norfab 4 Pedersens 2
the semifinal game was a real nail biter, with end-to-end action for both teams.
once again ton opened the scoring with helpers going to Allen and Popkie, immediately followed with another by Dedo from ton.
two goals were not sufficient for the Puckhounds to advance to the finals.
the team will hit the ice for practice and prepare for their league season opener which will be announced shortly.

DiStrict (Special) - the Ministry of natural resourc-es (Mnr) will be conducting heightened enforcement activity in the northeast region this fall as part of an annual safety-first campaign.
in particular, during the regu-lar gun season for moose from october 8 to 22, conservation officers will be checking hunt-ers regarding hunter orange re-quirements and safe use of fire-arms.
Fines range from $100 to $250 for offences involving these matters. in more serious cases, offenders could face fines of up to $25,000 or imprisonment or both.Hunting ruLes
to ensure a safe and lawful hunt, hunters are reminded that:
• All persons in possession of a firearm for the purpose of hunting shall not handle or dis-charge it or cause it to be han-dled or discharged without due care for persons or property.
• Any hunting injury caused by the discharge of a firearm re-sulting in medical treatment by a physician must be reported to a conservation officer.
• If you are in an area inhab-ited by wildlife, or on the way to or from an area inhabited by wildlife, you cannot have a
loaded firearm in a vehicle, mo-torboat, or aircraft. it is illegal to discharge a firearm from any of these modes of transporta-tion. there are exceptions for mobility-impaired persons and for persons hunting waterfowl.
• It is not legal to shoot from, down or across a public road.
• For half an hour before sun-rise to half an hour after sunset, it is not legal to be in possession of an uncased or loaded firearm in an area usually inhabited by wildlife. An exception exists for hunting raccoons at night.
• All hunters must wear solid hunter orange clothing (mini-mum of 400 square inches or 2,580 square centimetres) and a hunter orange head cover, except during a “bows-only” season. Mesh type construction vests are not acceptable.
• A hunter cannot possess a game seal issued to another per-son. ontario has a new Moose tag transfer Policy. consult the 2011-2012 hunting regulations Summary for more informa-tion.
• Hunters must make sure they are targeting a moose for which they are licensed. they need to be able to distinguish between a bull, cow and calf moose.
• A hunter who has killed a moose must immediately at-
Mnr promoting Safety First during
moose hunttach the game seal to the moose in the manner prescribed on the seal, and it must remain attached during transportation.
• Hunters must disassemble and remove any temporary structures erected for hunting moose on crown land.
under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, a firearm in-cludes air guns, bows and cross-bows, along with traditional rifles and shotguns. A firearm is considered loaded if there is a cartridge in the chamber or a magazine that is attached to the firearm. Bows, crossbows, and muzzleloaders have various def-initions of “loaded.”
Conservation officers may also enforce Small Vessel regu-lations and sections of the Li-quor Licence Act.
the 2011-2012 hunting reg-ulations Summary can be found online at www.mnr.gov.on.ca/en/Business/FW/Publication/Mnr_e001275P.html.
it is also available from li-cence issuers and at Serviceon-tario/Government information centres.
the Mnr urges anyone who sees moose poaching, or to re-port any natural resources viola-tion, to call 1-877-tiPS-Mnr (847-7667) toll-free any time or contact the local ministry office during regular business hours. You can also call crime Stop-pers anonymously at 1-800-222-tiPS (8477).

BIG TWO WINNERSThe Alzheimer Society’s 2011 Big Two Fishing Tournament raised money this summer to help improve the Society’s services and programs throughout the Temiskaming Shores area. This year’s winners of $350 and a 42-inch flat screen plasma television were Paul and Mary Ann Yarlasky from Callander. Their total catch measurement was 124.85 inches. Seen here, from the left, are Irene Chitaroni (Public Education Coordinator for the Alzheimer Society), Stephanie Dalcourt (Community Development and Awareness Coordinator for the Alzheimer Society), Paul and Mary Ann Yarlasky, and Mike Gifford (volunteer/organizer).
