Starting�in�03/2010,�the�interface�box�ULF-SBX�(option�644)�or�ULF-SBX-High�(option�6FL)�as�well�asthe�TCU�(option�633�or�option�639)�will�be�replaced�in�various�models�by�Combox.�The�Combox�will�beintroduced�successively�in�all�BMW�models.�The�Combox�provides�the�customer�with�new�functionsthat�are�described�in�this�information�bulletin.�Some�of�these�new�functions�include:

• Connection�of�audio�players�via�Bluetooth• Simultaneous�connection�of�mobile�phones�and�audio�players�via�Bluetooth• Contacts�with�images• Direct�software�update�by�customer• Connection�of�certain�iPods�using�a�cable�(discontinuation�of�Y�cable)• Album�cover�display�(for�iPod,�MTP�players,�MP3�via�USB)• Office�SMS,�calendar�and�notes�from�mobile�phone• Office�with�e-mail�from�mobile�phone�(expected�introduction�09/2010)• Video�two-cable�support�(expected�introduction�09/2010)• BMW�Internet�via�mobile�phone�(expected�introduction�09/2010).

4.1.�ComboxThe�Combox�control�unit�is�located�in�a�housing�that�has�been�designed�for�installation�without�aholder.�Thus�in�certain�vehicles,�the�Combox�is�installed�without�an�additional�sheet�metal�holder.

In�the�event�of�a�vehicle�crash,�however,�the�impact�energy�of�the�accident�is�transmitted�directly�to�thecontrol�unit�when�there�is�no�sheet�metal�holder.�If�a�crash�occurs,�the�control�unit�must�be�checked�forexternal�damage.

4.1.2.�Interfaces�and�componentsTo�make�it�easier�to�tell�them�apart,�the�system�connector�is�white�for�the�vehicle�electrical�system2010�and�black�for�the�vehicle�electrical�system�2000.�The�Combox�is�connected�in�the�L2�and�L4�tothe�K-CAN�and�in�the�L6�to�the�K-CAN2.�Because�the�K-CAN�and�K-CAN2�have�different�speeds,�thecolour-coding�is�intended�to�prevent�them�from�being�mixed�up.

4.1.4.�Use�in�L4�and�L6In�the�L6�and�L4,�headunits�with�integrated�telephone�are�not�used.�Thus�when�one�of�the�followingoptional�equipment�packages�are�ordered,�a�Combox�is�installed:

• Mobile�phone�adapter�Business�with�Bluetooth�interface�(option�644)• USB�audio�interface�(option�6FL)

4.2.�Compatible�Bluetooth�devicesMobile�phones�and�audio�players�can�be�connected�to�the�Combox�via�Bluetooth.�To�provide�thecustomer�with�a�simpler,�easier-to-understand�overview�of�the�compatible�devices,�the�website�athttp://www.bmw.com/bluetooth�is�being�revised.�In�03/2010,�customers�will�be�able�to�use�the�websiteto�see�which�functions�of�which�device�are�compatible�with�the�Combox.�The�following�information�willbe�in�the�foreground:

• Information�about�which�mobile�phone�is�compatible�in�which�function�(basically)• Information�about�whether�a�certain�mobile�phone�is�compatible�in�which�function�(in�detail)• Information�about�how�the�compatibility�of�a�certain�mobile�phone�with�a�certain�vehicle�can�be

improved�(e.�g.�by�means�of�a�software�update)

Customers�who�already�own�a�BMW�vehicle�will�be�able�to�identify�the�vehicle�via�the�vehicleidentification�number�(DOM-based).

In�the�first�step,�only�mobile�phones�will�be�included�in�the�device�database.�In�09/2010,�they�will�befollowed�by�audio�players�and�other�devices�that�can�be�connected�with�the�Combox�via�Bluetooth.

The�data�included�in�03/2010�will�apply�for�European�version�vehicles�only�and�then�be�provided�for�allvehicles�in�09/2010.�Old�vehicle�data�will�also�be�included�in�the�database.

5.1.�Audio�player�via�BluetoothThe�Combox�makes�it�possible�to�transmit�stereo�audio�signals�wirelessly�via�Bluetooth�from�acorresponding�source.�To�do�so,�the�source�must�support�the�A2DP�(Advanced�Audio�DistributionProfile).�A�source�can�be�a�mobile�phone�or�MP3�player,�for�example.�The�A2DP�profile�is�used�totransmit�the�audio�signal�only.

The�AVRCP�(Audio�Video�Remote�Control�Profile)�is�used�for�remote�control�of�the�source.�The�rangeof�functions�of�the�remote�control�depends�on�the�version�of�AVRCP�supported�in�the�source.�In03/2010,�the�Combox�will�support�Version�1.0�and�1.3�of�AVRCP.�In�09/2010,�AVRCP�in�Version�1.4�willfollow.

For�optimum�functionality�of�the�audio�player�via�Bluetooth,�use�only�devices�recommended�by�BMW.For�a�list�of�these�devices,�visit�http://www.bmw.com/bluetooth.

5.2.�Multiple�Bluetooth�couplingWith�the�introduction�of�the�Combox,�multiple�devices�can�be�coupled�via�Bluetooth�simultaneously.Thus�the�audio�player�of�one�device�and�the�telephone�function�of�another�device�can�be�used�at�thesame�time.

The�respective�used�function�appears�in�the�form�of�a�symbol�behind�the�device�name�in�the�"Add�newdevice"�display.

5.5.�OfficeThe�Combox�enables�customers�to�access�the�SMS�messages,�calendar,�notes,�e-mail�(in�09/2010),tasks�and�reminders�stored�on�a�supported�mobile�phone.�The�Office�item�replaces�the�Contacts�itemin�the�central�information�display.

Access�to�the�mobile�phone�is�always�read-only�access.�Thus�the�Combox�does�not�modify�existingdata�on�the�mobile�phone.

The�"Office�today"�display�informs�the�user�about�the�number�of�new�messages,�active�tasks�andupcoming�appointments.

5.6.�USB�audio�interfaceWith�the�Combox,�a�compatible�iPod�can�now�be�connected�using�a�regular�USB�cable�of�thecustomer's.�This�requires�the�optional�equipment�USB�audio�interface�(option�6FL).�All�data�and�otherinformation,�including�the�audio�data,�are�transmitted�via�the�USB�cable.

Non-compatible�iPods�(e.g.�first-generation�iPod�Nanos)�still�have�to�be�connected�using�the�familiar�Ycable.

5.7.�Album�coversFor�MP3�players,�USB�sticks,�MTP�players�and�iPods,�album�covers�are�displayed�if�the�MP3�filecontains�the�album�cover.�For�iPods,�the�album�cover�is�not�displayed�if�the�connection�is�made�via�theY�cable.�The�album�covers�are�displayed�for�a�connection�via�USB�(option�6FL)�only.

5.8.�Video�two-cable�connectionExpected�for�introduction�in�09/2010�is�the�ability�to�play�videos�from�an�iPod�on�the�centralinformation�display�via�a�two-cable�connection.�To�do�so,�in�addition�to�the�USB,�the�analogue�videooutput�of�the�iPod�Dock�Connector�must�be�connected�to�the�vehicle.�This�transmits�the�videoinformation�in�analogue�form.

5.9.�Software�updatesUse�of�the�Combox�enables�the�customer�for�the�first�time�to�update�the�software�of�a�systemcomponent.�To�do�so,�the�software�must�be�downloaded�from�the�website�http://www.bmw.de/updateand�stored�on�a�USB�stick.�For�this�purpose,�any�conventional�USB�stick�with�sufficient�storagecapacity�can�be�used.�Then,�the�software�is�transferred�from�the�USB�stick�to�the�Combox�via�the�USBaudio�interface�(option�6FL)�in�the�centre�console�and�the�Combox�is�updated.

The�BMW�Service�Partner�has�a�USB�stick�in�the�shape�of�a�BMW�key�available�for�purchase�by�thecustomer.�The�Service�Advisor/parts�salesperson�could�use�this�key�to�carry�out�a�one-off�softwareupdate�for�the�customer.�The�customer�can�then�carry�out�additional�updates�on�his�or�her�own�viaUSB�stick�or,�if�offered�by�the�dealer�organisation,�also�have�it�carried�out�there�by�USB�stick.

Expected�in�09/2010�is�the�ability�to�carry�out�a�software�update�via�BMW�TeleServices.�This�isexpected�to�require�both�the�Professional�navigation�system�(option�609)�and�the�Mobile�phoneadapter�Business�with�Bluetooth�interface�(option�633�or�option�639�for�US�version�vehicles).

5.9.1.�Notes�for�ServiceIf�a�vehicle�with�Combox�receives�an�I-level�programming�after�the�release�of�the�first�Combox�softwareupdate�(expected�in�06/2009),�a�subsequent�manual�software�update�must�be�carried�out�via�USB�ifthe�vehicle�is�equipped�with�a�USB�audio�interface�(option�6FL).

A�PUMA�information�will�be�released�in�this�regard.

With�an�expected�introduction�of�09/2010,�the�service�employee�will�be�able�to�use�the�workshopsystem�to�determine�whether�the�customer�has�already�carried�out�a�software�update.�In�this�case,the�service�employee�has�to�carry�out�the�software�update�in�the�event�of�a�replacement�or�I-levelprogramming�of�the�Combox.�If�the�customer�had�carried�out�a�software�update�and�no�USB�audiointerface�(option�6FL)�is�available,�the�software�update�must�be�carried�out�via�BMW�Online�(via�mobilewireless�connection).

5.10.�TelematicsFor�telematics�in�BMW�vehicles�with�Combox,�no�additional�control�unit�is�required.�All�telematicsfunctions�are�enabled�by�the�Combox.�Thus�the�Telematic�Control�Unit�(TCU)�is�no�longer�required�fortelematics.

5.11.�Emergency�callIn�BMW�vehicles�with�Combox,�the�emergency�call�is�carried�out�using�NGTP�(Next�GenerationTelematics�Protocol),�a�new�development�by�BMW�in�co-operation�with�Connexis�and�WirelessCar.The�customer�will�not�notice�any�difference�from�the�existing�emergency�call�system.�With�theCombox,�the�emergency�call�is�always�placed�via�the�backup�speaker.
