JAN / FEB 2019 THE PADANG 3

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEWelcome to a brand New Year, everyone!

2018 was an eventful year for the Singapore Cricket Club. Thanks to the support of our Members, the Club has enjoyed a stellar financial performance so far – from January to November 2018 alone, our total operating revenue was approximately $16.9 million, a 2.4% increase over the $16.5 million earned in the same period last year; we look forward to consolidating the full financial report for the year and reporting it to the Membership in April 2019. We have performed better than our budget and last year’s figures.

Last year was also a busy one on the F&B front: The Oval & Verandah menu was enhanced and our recently renovated Oval Kitchen is now equipped to serve you even better. Members have also been enjoying elevated levels of service and exquisite culinary experiences at the Padang Restaurant since we revitalised our signature restaurant in August. Just in time for the Christmas festivities, the Main Lounge also received a makeover with new carpets, curtains and furniture, as well as face lifts for the walls, ceilings, timber flooring and pillars.

For the first time in known memory, four major field Sections of Rugby, Hockey, Cricket and Football won the 1st div / Premier title in the league. We are a premier sports and social club and winning the premier title defines us. All our Sports Sections have proudly flown the SCC flag high with their admirable performances in their respective local and foreign leagues and competitions, even as they continue with efforts to train the next generation of sportspersons.

The three main tournaments we organised – Hockey6s, Soccer7s, and Rugby7s – attracted huge team participation from both Singapore and around the globe, as well as high spectator viewership, positive financial contributions and F&B spending.

Our first major tournament for 2019 will be the SCC International Hockey6s tournament (2 – 3 March), which incidentally celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. It promises to be yet another stellar display of fantastic sporting action, teamwork and camaraderie as teams fly in from around the globe to compete and renew friendships. Join us for a thrilling hockey weekend and cheer on our SCC teams!

At the same time, our Members have continued engaging with the wider community; I am very proud of the Rugby U17 Boys who took it upon themselves to support the Children’s Cancer

Foundation (CCF) by shaving their heads for charity (see page 26). These young players – talented and altruist - are the type of talent we strive to nurture. Meanwhile, our SCC Padantiques reaffirmed their commitment to the Youth Football Home in Phuket, supporting and helping the less privileged kids; they also retained the trophy in the Henrik Lorenz Memorial Championship (see page 36).

Our marquee SCC Night Race Fiesta saw Members and their guests partying over an adrenaline-filled racing weekend and its performance was one of the best in all our Night Race editions. We received enquires about our hospitality suites even before the race was concluded and due to their popularity, we will be making tender documents available much earlier this year from March. We also recently introduced a monthly Wine & Gourmet Series that has been extremely well-received by Members, judging by how the first two editions were sold out.

We have had most successful and appreciated Christmas Eve and Diwali parties. Both were very well attended and Members enjoyed the live bands and the food fiesta prepared by the Club and the invitee chefs. Going forward we shall continue to bring new and exciting fares for our marquee social events.

We have several projects in the pipeline, including Dempsey improvements which we are excited to share details about in the coming months. Plans are also underway to further improve our other dining facilities. Meanwhile, we are working to make it even easier for you to book sports facilities, lessons, social events and make dining reservations, with all these services right at your fingertips.

On behalf of the General Committee, I would like to thank all Members for their strong support of all the initiatives we implemented last year and for their patronage of the Club – without you, 2018 would not have been such a tremendous year for SCC. This 2019 promises to be an interesting one of many opportunities and new experiences and we hope that once again, with your enthusiasm, we can take SCC even further together.

I wish all Members and their families a phenomenal New Year ahead.

Did You Know? The Padang magazine turns 20 this year!

Formerly known as The SCC Magazine, the publication was rebranded and introduced to Members as The Padang twenty years ago in 1999. In an era when digital media was uncommon,The Padang magazine played a vital role in keeping Members abreast of the Club’s activities.

The Club chose The Padang as the magazine title to convey the close relationship between the SCC and the historic green field it occupies. For many years, the Padang field had witnessed numerous national celebrations and Club tournaments which were played on it; there was no better name to call the magazine than The Padang.

Today, The Padang magazine reaches a wide readership of more than 20,000 readers spanning the globe and is available in both print and

digital formats.

This year, on its 20th anniversary, The Padang will evolve again – not only will it have a slightly different look, but we will also be

bringing you more interesting lifestyle feature articles on the Club and its Members in addition to the regular content on SCC sports

news, social event updates and dining promotions. We will also be enhancing the synergy between our print and digital communication platforms to reach an even wider audience and offer you greater variety in content.

Thank you, The Padang readers!

Chinese New YearDishes Highlights

The Reunion Dinner held on the eve of Chinese New Year marks the start of the festive feasting and celebration. As with many traditions carried out during this period by the ethnic Chinese to ensure a great year ahead, the Reunion Dinner usually features dishes and/or ingredients of auspicious significance that promise wealth, prosperity and health.

This year at SCC, one of the special dishes our chefs have prepared for the CNY Oval Ala Carte Menu is the Claypot Roasted Pork with Bean Curd and Leek.

While leeks are a fairly common ingredient in Chinese cooking, it is considered an auspicious ingredient to have during Chinese New Year… all because of the way its name is pronounced. The Chinese leek (大蒜) or “dasuan”’ in Mandarin, when pronounced, sounds like “counting” and symbolizes having wealth in abundance or, plainly-speaking, having lots of money to count!

So if you want to ensure you’ll have pots of money to count this year, make sure you order and eat (clay)pots of our Claypot Roasted Pork with Bean Curd and Leek.

Another must-have dish for Chinese New Year is the Yu Sheng. Also known as the “Prosperity Toss”, this salad-type dish consists of raw fish (usually salmon) or abalone mixed with shredded vegetables and a variety of sauces and condiments, amongst other ingredients.

Yu Sheng literally means “raw fish”, commonly conflated to “abundance”, and symbolizes abundance, prosperity and vigour. Diners gather around the table and recite auspicious sayings as they add the ingredients to the dish; each ingredient has its own symbolic lucky meaning. Then, the diners toss and mix the salad up with their chopsticks, and it is believed that the height of the toss reflects the height of the diners’ growth in fortune – explaining the often extremely enthusiastic tossing chaos that usually results!

Remembrance Day11 November 2018

Each year, SCC holds a Remembrance Day service at the Centopah in Esplanade Park to honour the members of the armed forces who fought and died during World War One. This Remembrance Day 2018 was particularly significant as it marked a century since the end of World War One and befitting this, the British High Commission provided a Royal Navy Guard of 14 to support the SCC Cenotaph Act of Remembrance.

In attendance were VIPS including Royal Navy Commander Martin Moore - UK Defence Adviser Singapore; Lieutenant Commander Aston Talbot - New Zealand Defence Force Liaison Officer; Colonel Jeffery Drummond – Canadian Defence Attache (Singapore/ Cambodia/ Vietnam); Captain So Won Ahn – Defence Attache, US Embassy Singapore; all of whom recited excerpts from the Pericles Eulogy, war poems “In Flanders Field” and “For the Fallen”, etc.

SCC President Sher Baljit Singh said, “Every year, the Singapore Cricket Club holds this Remembrance Day service because we see it as a privilege to be able to honour the sacrifices made by the military in defending Singapore during the war. We are grateful for the kind support of the British High Commission in making this years’ service particularly special as we mark the 100th year since the end of World War 1. It is important to mark this, so we will always remember the price of peace and how vital it is for us to safeguard it.”

The SCC Remembrance Day was covered in local media outlets ChannelNewsAsia, The Straits Times, and Lianhe Zaobao.

SPORTS NEWS

In Conversation with Malaysian Professional Squash Player: Tan Wee Wern

What are your 2019 plans? 2019 will be a big year for me. I only started playing again in July 2018 after being out for about 21 months from an injury. I have been back playing professionally in the past five to six months. So next year would really be like having a brand new start for me.

How did you keep yourself from pressing forward after being out for 21 months?I started playing professional squash since I was 17 years old. So playing squash is all I know; not being able to train, to travel, and compete in tournaments was tough. It was a phase that I had to go through but I was fortunate to have a good team with me. They have been with me throughout my whole career and despite all my injuries, they did not give up on me. So I felt it was only right that I got back in training and playing again. If I decide to call it quit, it would pretty be much be like I am giving up on them. Every day is an improvement for me; it has not been easy but it is a process I have to go through and and it can only get better.

You achieved the World No. 5 ranking in 2014. Now, you have had to start over again. How do you feel about that? There is good and bad. It is good in that I feel, it can’t get any worse than this. Where it feels bad is the frustration I have sometimes about not being able to do what I used to do in the past, especially when I know what I was able to achieve. At the same time though, it has been a reminder to me to really appreciate the sport; I think I didn’t appreciate it as much as I should have then – at that point in time, every tournament felt just like any other tournament. Being away for more than two years made me realised how much I missed the sport and should have enjoyed it a little bit more.

We have many junior sportspersons playing different sports for SCC. For those considering a career in sports, what advice would you give them? would you want to give them if they are considering a career in sports? The desire has to come from within. Even with all the talent that you have, it really has to come from within because at the end of the day, it is all about hard work and persistence. At the same time though, while you are working towards your aspirations, it would also be wise to make sure you have something that you can fall back on in case of any unforeseen circumstances.

SCC Rugby U17 Boys: Going Bald for CharityOur SCC Rugby U17 team was in Dubai from 22 - 25 November 2018 to compete in an international Rugby 7s tournament organised by Dubai College. For most of the 12 players, their travels were funded by their parents.

Two of the players though - local Singaporeans who are also part of the SCC Rugby Academy Scholarship Program - not only received some aid from the SCC Rugby Academy, but the U17/U16 players banded together in early-October and organised a car wash day at Dempsey to raise travel funds for their team mates!

In addition, the SCC U17s felt that they wanted to more than play rugby; they wanted to do something for a meaningful cause and to show care to those in need.

The touring boys decided to shave their heads in support of the Children’s Cancer Foundation (CCF) after training on 17 November 2018 “to tell children with cancer that it is OK to be bald”. The two coaches, Marc Lansonneur and Laurent Ducourneau, also joined their players in shaving their heads for charity.

Incidentially, SCC U17s won the Dubai College Cup, beating last year’s cup holders Dubai College 19-5 in the finals. SCC applauds our boys for being the champions that they already are and for having such big hearts!

SPORTS NEWS

The Singapore Cricket Club International Rugby 7s (SCC 7s) ended on a high note on Sunday, 4 November 2018, as Daveta from Fiji reclaimed the Ablitt Cup in the rain against a Casuarina Cougars side that were in their first final since 1984.

The Cougars had played most of the tournament with only 8 players in their squad but had upset the likes of Hong Kong Dragons and Ponsonby from New Zealand in their run to the finals of the Ablitt Cup.

Daveta on the other hand, had a seemingly easy group round on day 1 of the tournament, and had cruised to what seemed like an easy start with a quarter final against the hosts Singapore Cricket Club. It ended up being a game for the day, with the local club holding the Fijians for most of the first half. It was however a game of inches, and it was the Fijians that came out 12 – 5 over a club side that boasted several Singapore national team players.

It was an afternoon that was perfect for rugby 7s, with overcast clouds cooling the some 3,500 assembled who turned up at the majestic Padang for some great rugby. It was the Schools and Colleges finals up first, with Anglo Chinese School (Independent) coming out 33 – 5 winners over United World College (Dover Campus) to win the Len Foster Trophy for the Under 14 category. The French School Lycée Français de Singapour played some champagne rugby to come up similar 33- 5 winners over the Tanglin Trust School to win the John Clark Shield for the Under 16 age group. In the Under 18 age group, Tanglin Trust School came up winners 15- 7 over United World College (Dover Campus) to win the Sithawalla Cup.

After the Schools and Colleges finals, the crowd was warmed up to the Bowl final, where Kurumi from Japan won the Bowl against the SCC Barbarians. In the Plate final, the Asian Games gold medalists Hong Kong Dragons were up against the side from Perth, Cottesloe, who came up winners over Hong Kong Dragons. The Shield final was a great one where another Japanese club, Tamariva were spirited but lost to long-time visitors Palmyra from Australia.

So it came to the Ablitt Cup final with a heavy downpour not stopping any proceedings. The Casuarina Cougars game up strongly to hold Daveta in the first minutes of the game, but it was the Fijians who drew first blood. A couple of quick tries to end the half seemed to signal the end for the boys from Darwin but they came back strong to score a couple, closing the gap to a try, losing 17-24.

In the end, it was a great way to end a great tournament, with Daveta’s Mesake Varo being named Player of the Final, and Daveta’s Leveni Tani winning the Ashforth Trophy for Player of the Tournament.

38th Chivas Regal Interport Challenge Trophy

This is the year’s most prestigious Balut Tournament in Singapore and Malaysia, and as last year’s winners it was SRC’s turn to host. Some 80 players from the six Balut-playing clubs in Singapore - SCC, SRC, Tanglin Club, NUSS, Indian Association and the Eurasian Association - plus a further 16 Baluteers from the Kinabalu Club, the Kinabalu Yacht Club, and the Sabah Golf & Country Club gathered for this event on Friday and Saturday, 23-24 November.

Expertly organised by Yvonne Pereira and her highly efficient team, the atmosphere was enhanced by plentiful food and drink, great music, and the fact that it was held in SRC’s new and colourful ballroom. Congratulations to the Kinabalu Club for emerging worthy winners!

Padang Shield

Held on 17 November, this biennial event was won by the host SRC, edging past SCC by a mere 38 points. SCC Convenor Tony Fisher is seen here handing the Trophy to SRC Convenor Yvonne Pereira.

The Balut Inter-Club LeagueThe final match of the season was hosted by the SCC on 17 October. Congratulations to the Tanglin Club Team 1 for emerging as 2018 League winners with 14,149 points, closely followed by the Indian Association with 14, 088 points. NUSS clinched 3rd spot with 13, 842 points.

20 November saw SCC’s last in-house gathering for the year. As usual, the attendance was good, the food was excellent, the drinks flowed, and Raj Kumar demonstrated his mastery of the mystical art of Balut once again by obtaining the highest individual number of points in one column (162) as well as the highest individual aggregate (654)!

The Annual Christmas PartyDue to issues obtaining the Gilmour room on the original required date, we broke with ‘tradition’ and held this event earlier than usual on Saturday, 10 November. In a further departure from the ‘norm’ we also played six games of Balut. Asia Lawn Bowls ChampionshipsFour SCC bowlers represented Singapore at the Asian Bowls Championships in Henan, China in October and all came back with medals. SCC bowlers Josephine Lim and Amira Goh combined with May Lee from Singtel to claim the bronze medal in the Women Triples. Matthew Ngui skippered his fours team of Bernard Foo, Law Kwok Fai and Anthony Loh (all from Evergreen LBC) to a silver medal, falling in the finals to Hong Kong by a solitary shot.

Shermeen Lim showed her class when she defeated the SEA Games and Commonwealth Games gold medalist Emma Saroji of Malaysia in the semi-finals to get into the gold medal match against Japan. She took her form into the finals and defeated her Japanese counterpart in straight sets to claim the Singles crown. Congratulations to all winners!

National Singles League and National FoursAfter capturing the Asian Singles title, Shermeen Lim continued her scintillating form to win the National Singles league in December. She beat Leng Li Li from Singapore Power in straight sets and earned the rights to represent Singapore at the World Cup in Warilla come March 2019. Unfortunately, Matthew Ngui came short against Kah Hock in the finals and came in second best.

Euan Wong, Matthew Ngui, Melvin Tan and Wong Hui Kai from SCC successfully defended their Men’s Fours title at the Kallang Lawn Bowls Green in November. They were undefeated in their group matches and beat their opponents from ELBC in the finals 14-9. Congratulations to all for their efforts!

SCC Drawn TriplesA total of seven drawn triples teams participated. In the first semi-final, Melvin, Lew Foong and Velu defeated Christian, Anwar and Ben. In the other semi-final, Ganesh, Candy and Purush defeated Chai, Retna and Srinivasan. The 3rd place encounter was a high quality match, with brilliant shot-making and close heads. Chai’s snooker-style shot in the penultimate end for four shots proved lethal as they ran away winners 17-15 against Christian’s team. In the finals, Melvin’s team proved too strong and defeated Ganesh’s team to win the tournament.

SCC/RBSC/KBGC Triangular and Interport After winning the triangular title for two years running, a twenty strong team arrived in Bangkok, eager to make it a hattrick of titles. The first match was the interport against RBSC. After a two and a half hour tussle, the final result across the green read 3-3, but due to shots being the deciding factor, we lost the title to RBSC by an overall score of 89-107.

The next match was our first triangular match against KBGC. SCC fared strongly in the game, winning 4 out of 6 rinks, drawing one and narrowly losing the other end by one shot. The most crucial game was against RBSC. Having done reasonably well against RBSC in the interport, our spirits were high and we were hopeful of a good result against the hosts the next morning. Unfortunately,

Teams RBSC and SCC in Bangkok, Thailand.

the result was not to be and we succumbed to the strong RBSC team with 1 win, 1 draw and 5 losses. We would like to blame the awesome Thai team dinner on Saturday evening that the Bowls Committee threw for the players as some were still visibly hungover and thinking about the tom yum soup from the previous night. All in all, it was a valiant effort by the team and we look to regain the trophy in Hong Kong next year.

“There are various ways to skin a cat”

And so it is, with the noble game of Bridge, I dare say!

It’s a great pleasure, nay indeed a privilege to be asked, and to accept, this appointment of “brand new scribe”, on behalf of the club Bridge section, for its glossy magazine. And I promise to slam the ground running (pardon the pun)!

My sincere appreciation to Chitra for a job well done and tirelessly handled all these years gone by, and to our evergreen convener (and “Commander-in-Chief”) Pat for filling the gap in the interim. Hats off to you ladies!

These have been a busy past few months of bridge too! As I shall now duly relate:

Padang Shield (17 November)VENUE: SRC

The SCC (Gang of Seven) Bridge Team, at the ready with their (hidden) shields.

Quadrangular Games (Round Four) (25 November)VENUE: SRC

Despite a spirited fielding and showing of our representative teams, and our “A” team gaining an overall fourth position (with a tally of 225 points) in this final round, SCC Bridge conceded (rather graciously) overall, on all four rounds.

SRC Open Pairs (18 November)VENUE: SRCOnly one pair graciously volunteered to participate in this annual event, Olivia Jacob (our indomitable captain and past convener) and Savithri.

The Gang of Four: L to R : Edith, Patricia, Lord Firoz & Jai. (Doesn’t Yours Truly make them ladies look handsome?!)

Bridge Section Christmas Celebrations (17 December)Yet another one of our colourful, annual events, with yummy grub, and X-Mas pud to boot. Prizes were awarded to the winning N/S and E/W pairs. Here’s some (curious) “Mr. & Ms Santa” imagery!

The champion pair for 2018 were Edith Somogyi and Murli V., and the individual champion for 2018 was Beng Tee Haythornethwaite.

Bridge Section Deepavali Celebration (19 November)One of our more colourful, annual events, with sumptuous Festival-of-Lights delights, and a dress code to match!

As is the usual custom, prizes were awarded to the winning N/S and E/W pairs.

From left to right: Best North-South Pair Mike Sharples and Jolene Lee-Austen; Best East-West Pair Beng Tee Haythornethwaite and King Fook (“The King”).

With veteran and new Members comprising the Section committee, the last quarter of 2018 indeed added colour and character to this delightful game, keeping one and all sane (and young)! And there’s yet another year of competitive bridge to look forward to, not least amongst the line up”, the Premier & National Bridge Leagues!

SCC Bridge has, during the last couple of years, shown a rather promising increase in interest and turn out (from humble beginnings of some four tables at the start, to a usually regular seven to eight now). So for all those duly inspired, and the souls that yearn to continue maintaining their sanity, do come join in for some thrills (and a few spills along the way too). It is, by no stretch of the imagination, a bridge too far!

“7NT doubled-redoubled”, bid and made, anyone?!?

The Cricket Section’s 2019 season beckons and certainly promises to be a landmark year with stiff competition for spots across all teams. With SCC Tigers successfully defending the Div 1 premiership title for the Club and an outstanding performance by SCC Lions to make it to the finals of the T20 competition in 2018, we are certainly set to carry this momentum in to 2019.

The 2018 season ended with two extremely well organised and attended tours: the first one to the historic Hong Kong Cricket Club and our first tour to the Clark 6’s. Due credit to the tour managers Peter Murray and James Kilbee for these respective tours. The Section continues to build and strengthen our reciprocity with clubs in the region via these tours and the recently concluded reciprocal arrangements with Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) is a testimony to the same. A special thanks to the General Committee for assisting with this landmark development.

Our growing strength and quality in league performances is also being recognised at the national level with some SCC players donning the Singapore colours. Abhiraj Singh, Anish Paraam and Arit Dutta represented Singapore at the ICC World Cricket League division 3 in Nov 2018 in Oman. Singapore competed against the host nation Oman, USA, Kenya, Uganda and Denmark in a competition that had a lot at stake for each team, as the top two would progress to division 2, which is a huge step towards gaining One Day International status.

SCC cricketers gave a strong account of themselves. It is heartening to note that two standout performances for Singapore came from SCC players Aritra Dutta and Anish Paraam. Aritra made a match defining 87 off 80 balls against Denmark as Singapore set a target 254 & Anish scored a fantastic 85 off 93 balls in a mammoth chase of 324 against Kenya, which Singapore nearly gunned down. Arit and Anish were the top 2 run scores for Singapore in the tournament. Arit was adjudged Man of the Match for his performance against Denmark and was the third highest run getter across all the teams in the tournament, amassing 202 runs in 5 games.

The Cricket Section’s AGM and Awards Night took place on 9 November and the Committee would like to welcome Suresh Kalpathy as the new Convenor and thank our outgoing Convenor Hugh Darwell following an exceptional stint at the helm of affairs.

Monthly DartsOn Thursday 8 November, Darts Section members met for their regular monthly darts night. These sessions are well supported by the regulars who practise their skills and partake in the food and beverage on offer in a convivial atmosphere after work.

Darts TourEight Section members made the trip to Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) for a weekend of friendly darts from 12 to 15 October. The merry group was made up of George Abraham, Shelia Nagiah, Soma Devi, Mohan Balagopal, Zoeb and Fatema Sadiq, Huned and Fahmida Hassanbhai. HCMC did not disappoint and we had a fun-filled programme of darts with some very accomplished local darters who were all obviously from the top of their individual leagues. All the same we held our own with decent scores.

Two evenings of darts were organised by the Saigon International Darts League (SIDL) at the Polo Bar and the Confidant Bar. SIDL President Jeff Spijkers and members welcomed us warmly to their exciting city with their great hospitality. In appreciation on behalf of SCC Darts Section, Shelia presented the SCC plaque and t-shirts to our hosts. We look forward to welcoming them to SCC for a reciprocal visit.

Year-End PartyWe celebrated our final event of the year in style with lots of glitz and glamour, and Black and Gold as the theme of the year-end party held in the Gilmour Room on Friday 14 December. With a live band and lots of games, prizes, food and drink, it was an evening full of fun and laughter. Thank you to all who made this event a success.

Congratulations to the SCC Legends for retaining the Padang Shield 2018!SCC LEGENDS 2 VS SRC LEGENDS 0

Expertly marshalled by manager Ravi Krishnan and Captain Incredible, Glyn Vince, it was great to see a truly representative team from the Section retain The Padang Shield. It was a result achieved with great commitment and a desire to win from this Select XI from the Section.

The defence stood firm at all times with Mickey, a very solid Ravi and good support from Mike and Charlie. If a shot got through it was well dealt with by Robert ‘the Cat’!

Our midfield dominated throughout and controlled the game for long periods, forming both a supportive line of defence and a solid line going forward – well played Jim, Graham (our goal scorers) Tony, Patrick, Ricky and Thomas, who kept the engine running for the entire match.

Upfront our heroes were Jas and Boon who covered a very long shift and won many battles by continuously surging forward and receiving great support from Arjen when the cavalry arrived!!

All-in-all a great performance from the team! The SCC and, in particular, the Football Section are very proud of you for this result.

In other news:HENRIK LORENZ MEMORIAL CHAMPIONSHIPThe PADS retained the Henrik Lorenz Trophy after beating HKFC in Phuket on 10 November.

The Henrik Lorenz Memorial Championship is a very special tour for the SCC PADANTIQUES for many reasons, but primarily for their immense commitment to the YFH (Youth Football Home ) in Phuket. In 2005 Henrik Lorenz, who represented both Singapore Cricket Club and Hong Kong Football Club, had a dream to build an orphanage in Phuket Thailand to take in local orphans and destitute children. The dream was to coach them football and facilitate the opportunity to be well educated too. Henrik is the founding trustee of the Foundation. Sadly, Henrik passed away in his sleep during a flight to Australia in December 2006.

INTER-PORT FOOTBALL MATCH IN MALAYSIAThe SCC Lions won their Inter-port Football Match at Royal Selangor Club, Bukit Kiara, KL, in October.

INTERSECTION EVENTS A big thank you to the Netball Section and Bowls Section for their respective Intersection Tournaments. Lots of fun and everyone looks forward to the next!

Golf at Forest City Country Club - Thursday 20th Dec 2018At 9am sharp, about 40 golfers jumped into mini vans at the SCC and headed to Forest City early to avoid getting caught in the reported 3-hour traffic jam at the Second Link. A few drove up on their own.

It was a first-time visit to Forest City for a golf game for many of us and the turnout was exceptionally high for a game so close to Christmas.

The course was still maturing and tee-boxes were compact while the greens were quite hard. However, sand on the green made green speed rather slow. A 10 minute thunderstorm helped soften the ground a little. Overall, we enjoyed a very decent round of golf. For sure, SCC golfers will be frequent visitors at Forest City.

A Night to Remember - Bong Natal! This year’s Golf Section Christmas Party Bash was the icing on the top of a great 2018 golfing year. We walked the talk and put on a fantastic Party complete with an exotic belly dancer performance - we must apologise that we have no photos to share. You see, our photographer went totally “goo goo ga ga”. He was so mesmerised and twitter-pated by the beautiful Russian-Beijing beauty’s pulsating belly gyrations that he took about 30 blur photos of his own shoes!

Chovin, Becky, Chef Raymond and their superb F&B team were at the top of their game with a 6-star menu spread, classy Christmas décor and a 7star super smooth F&B service. Janet and her Sports Dept team were outstanding. Thipa was on hospitalisation leave but she still joined us to help out. What more can we ask for? SCC is a Premier Sports Club blessed with truly fantastic people. Thank you.

Hockey Ends the Year in Celebratory FashionThe Men’s 3rd XI didn’t let the rare chance of success slip as they brought home the Singapore Hockey Federation (SHF) National Hockey League (NHL) 4 title home. They ended the season on a 11-game unbeaten run which included nine wins and two draws. They beat Balestier Lions 3-1 in the final match to ensure they won the title with one round of game left to play.

The title win was celebrated hugely at all levels as there were many SCC players who have never won a Gold Medal playing for the Club and the remedy of this state of affairs was more than welcome. The season was especially satisfying as Lennard Boehme also picked up the league’s top scorer award.

Keeping in tune with title wins, our illustrious Ladies 1s retained their National Indoor League crown with an 8-2 annihilation of second-placed Hollandse Club. The ageless Catherine Wheeler starred throughout and also claimed the top scorer of the league award. The success of the Ladies somewhat compensates for their relatively lowly bronze medal finish in the National Women’s League 1 earlier this season. However coupled with their Women’s Liga title defence in October the stage looks set for them to shine in 2019.

Staying in the celebration mood, the Hockey Section had their annual day on 24 November and boy was it a Hockey Day! From 2pm there was first the “Numbers’ Cup” on the Padang. The Odds and Evens drew an exciting match 6-6 which meant the Odds continue to hang onto the Challenge Cup which they won in last season’s inaugural match.

The Annual Awards and Dinner was momentous for Ken Forbes who picked the Section Member of the Year award after his loyal service to the Club over the last 5 seasons. He has brought

the Men’s programme up to be amongst the best, if not one of the best ones in the country. The Men’s team not only boast internationally acclaimed players but these days it also showcases the finest Singaporean talent. Our Singaporean contingent are now consistently representing our country in international tournaments and Multi-Sports Games such as the SEA Games.

The weekend after the Dinner, the Section was well represented in our annual tour of Bangkok and the Ladies lost the finals 1-0 to an ever-changing ISCI squad after dominating the 15-minute match from start to finish. Disappointed as they were, the strong bond they were able to forge will hold the Section in good stead. The Men too surprised with an uncanny run to the Plate finals which they duly lost in penalty shootouts. Bangkok will however be remembered by our ladies well-worked warm-up routine to the tunes of “Cotton Eye Joe” and Wayne Blazejczyk’s eight PS conversions in a row, a feat not many can repeat.

The hockey year closed with a final social on Friday, 21 December 2018 as SCC Masters hosted Singapore Indian Association Masters on the Padang and thence to light food and drinks at the SCC Courtyard.

The Convenor together with the Section would like to wish the whole of SCC a very Happy New Year!

JAN / FEB 2019 THE PADANG 39

SPORTS

The SCC Rugby Section celebrated the first day of Christmas with three matches across the grades on the Padang. All in all, the Section managed to score 209 points over the weekend while conceding only 20.

With such talent oozing through the ranks, it was little wonder that the following weekend saw Oldham’s 2nd XV bail on the 8 December 2018 fixture against the SCC Lions for the second year in a row. With the forfeit, Lions were triumphant 20 – 0.

The big game of the weekend was however SCC 1st XV taking on the Gaulois Roosters, affectionately known as ‘the French team’ or ‘Les Frogs’. Previous league structures have typically seen the French competing against the SCC Tankards and Lions, rather than our illustrious Prems. Few on the sidelines felt the reigning Singapore champions would need to move out of second gear.

The Prems were led on to the pitch by the highly decorated Fijian Flyer – Valu Raturibi – who was (potentially) playing his last game for the SCC.

The French came out of the blocks with a combination of powerful running and Gaelic flair, and early pressure led to the SCC conceding a kickable penalty. 0 – 3 French.

The SCC then found their rhythm and created some chances of their own. Strong running from No. 8 Andy Wheble (in his first game for the Prems) and fellow backrower Drew Bynes gave the SCC some front foot ball as they repeatedly broke the advantage line. The pressure led to the French conceding a penalty with Marah Ishraf bringing the scores level.

After their positive start the French then struggled to regain the momentum. The SCC had them pinned down in their own half and

French attempts at clearance kicks repeatedly fell into the waiting arms of SCC fullback Ben Turner, whose hard and evasive running pierced the French defence a number of times. However despite having the majority of the possession and territory, the SCC failed to cross the French tryline in the first half and were only able to add another penalty – taking a 6-3 lead into the sheds.

Halftime gave captain Mikey Oliver the chance to rally his troops and the SCC began the second half with a renewed sense of vigour. Our boys held on to early possession and began repeatedly breaking the French line.

The sustained pressure saw French resistance crumble. Some hard running had the Prems march forward, phase by phase, toward the French line. An infringement led to an SCC scrum only five yards out and a monster shove saw the French pack going backwards. While Peter McFeely dotted the ball down, this was a true team try.

With the tryline finally breached, French heads were down. The SCC pressed the advantage with some tidy interplay in the midfield, which resulted in Jay Hykel showing the Gaulois winger a clean pair of heels to score in the corner and add to his season’s growing tally of tries. Marah ‘the Sniper’ Ishraf coolly added the extras, which saw the SCC close out the game 21 – 3 victors.

Agincourt it was not, but another solid win before Christmas and – in the Gaulois Roosters – another worthy opponent to have in the National League and a potential dark horse come finals time.

Valu Raturibi - finishing on a high. League title winner, multiple national sevens tournaments winner and a six pack.

The SCC Lions managed to score 79 points against St. Andrews despite Lions’ fringe player Dan Mourad being sin binned for repeated infringement against his skilful opposite number.

Henry Winter looking glorious. A walking advert for F45.

The Tennis section was very active in the last quarter again. In this edition, we are covering some of our highlights. We had the Tennis Tour to Hong Kong; we beat SRC in the Padang shield, played a friendly against Keppel Club, held the SCC Doubles Tennis Championship and got together for the AGM.

Singapore Recreation Club (SRC) Padang Shield - 17 November 2018On 17 November 2018, the Padang Shield Tennis matches were played at the Fairmount Hotel tennis courts. SRC, being the host, decided to play two singles and one doubles. The SCC Tennis team won all three matches.

Keppel friendly get together – 17 November 2018SCC Tennis Captain Vishal Vijay and Gilbert Ng for the Keppel Tennis Club organised a tennis friendly for which we sent a whopping 16 SCC players out to Keppel Club. Keppel was a great host and all players had a plenty of fun on and off the court.

Hong Kong Tennis Tour – 23 to 25 November 2018Ten players from SCC Tennis Section flew to Hong Kong to visit the Hong Kong Cricket Club (HKCC) and Hong Kong Football Club (HKFC). This was a great opportunity to enjoy and see the facilities of our reciprocal clubs and foster the camaraderie among players and the friendship between the clubs.

The SCC Tennis Section sponsored the ‘Tennis Championship Trophy’ to encourage future visits that would help keep the friendship between the clubs going for years to come. Most players arrived late Friday night, hence only a few made it Saturday morning to our Dragon Back’s hike, giving us fantastic views over the Shek-O beach and mountain range.

On Saturday afternoon, we played HKCC which we were able to beat after losing to them during our 2016 Tennis tour. HKCC treated us to dinner in their restaurant. Many stories were shared, lots of laughter made the rounds and it was one of those evening which didn’t end early. HKCC is looking forward to visiting us in 2019 to get a chance to win back the ‘Tennis Championship Trophy’ which SCC took home again.

On Sunday morning, we faced the HKFC Tennis team at their centrally located club facility next to the Hong Kong horse race

track. It was visible that the HKFC team went ‘earlier to bed’ than the SCC Tennis team. Slightly weakened from the nightly activities, we received a close loss on that day and the Trophy stayed with HKFC. After a nice brunch with the HKFC Tennis team, the tour ended in the HKFC bar right next to the soccer pitch. We thank all SCC players who attended the tour and in particular Darren Wilson for organising it.

COSMO LEAGUE: LAST MATCH OF THE SEASON After a sensational season of Monday evening matches that had commenced in August, the bid for the title of Cosmo champs came down to the last match of the season held at the Tanglin Club on 26 November.

There were two matches that night at the Tanglin Club: SCC against The American Club, as well as Hollandse Club against Tanglin Club. Going into the match on Monday, Hollandse Club was at the top of the league table at 41 points, with SCC hot on their tails at 39 points. We were still in the running – a convincing win by us and a loss by them would have done the trick.

Our team of Russell Lui, Rahil Devgan, Dhruv Sawney, Anthony Stiefel and Eleanor Tan did not disappoint, concluding the matches for SCC that night by winning 4 out of 5 of the matches against The American Club. Alas, there was one crucial match to be played that was out of our hands - the nail-biting final match of the season between Tanglin Club and Hollandse Club. Despite our ardent support for Tanglin that night, Hollandse Club prevailed and emerged as champs for the season.

COSMO GALA DINNER SCC was the host of the end of season Cosmos Squash Gala Dinner, which had a large turnout of more than a hundred attendees from both SCC and the players from the other Cosmo squash teams.

The night’s highlights included speeches from our Section Convenor Sarat Chandran and the captain of the winning team, the Hollandse Club, prize presentations and a lucky draw. Adrian drew lots of laughter and applause from the guests as our ever-entertaining emcee for the night.

In the true spirit of the Cosmos, it was a night that celebrated good squash, but more importantly ensured good camaraderie and good fun. There was nary a dull moment throughout the night, which culminated in a boat race which SCC had set up in an attempt to beat Hollandse Club at guzzling beer since we failed to beat them at squash.

SCC ended the season a spirited second. A tremendous effort by all our cosmo players, with special mention to Captain Tim Howard, Rahul Khare and Supriya Sakhalkar for organizing and planning the gala dinner and the matches throughout the season.

Full house at the Padang restaurant for the Squash Cosmo Gala Dinner.

Spectatorship for this boat race has exceeded that of a typical Cosmo league squash match.
