Ju ly - D ecem ber 2 012 NEWS LET TER
Fellow LIR Members;
Another fun year is well underway. We are nearing the halfway mark. The weather has been gorgeous with a
mild winter and a beautiful spring, although we could use
a nice rain to get the field crops, our flowers and our
gardens growing.
The 20th Anniversary Celebration is behind us now!
Barbara Swanson and Don Alberti did an excellent job with the help of their committee and other volunteers. We
thank them for all their hard work. Everyone seemed to
enjoy it and thought it very educational.
Our courses and clubs present a lot of fun filled opportu-
nities. Bocce Ball on Monday morning and afternoon is a
big attraction at Prison Brew, with a delicious lunch on your own after or before you play. We wish to “Thank”
Debbie and her crew for opening up early every Monday
for LIR. All other clubs (Pinochle, Bridge, etc.) are also doing great. Check this newsletter or call the office for a
complete listing and times. If there is some activity you
wish were offered; just speak up, let our leaders know and volunteer to help get it started. (If you’re interested,
I’m sure there are several others waiting for the same
activity.) So check out the newsletter and join in the fun!
Rosemarie Turner and her group are having great success
in planning trips of interest. They have had little trouble
filling the trips and they have even made two trips to the same places. See the new ones in this newsletter. You
need to get your reservation in as soon as possible, be-
cause some fill up quite rapidly. Just remember “If you
snooze you lose”, so book them early!
I am winding down my term as President with only six
more months of my two years in office. It has been fun, educational, and exciting, working with so many wonder-
ful people. As I have often said since taking office, I will
run the meetings and try to keep the club on the path to the future. It is your organization and your involvement
will be the fuel for the future. There are so many more
activities we can try and hopefully succeed at;, if we don’t succeed we can say we had fun trying. So in closing, “I
may be your leader, but it is up to you to tell me which
way to go!”

Rocky Mountain High
September 24 – 29, 2012
With snow-dusted peaks as a backdrop, aspen leaves turning every imaginable
shade of red, yellow, and orange flittering in the breeze, no other fall show
could compare to this historical and scenic trip. Add a visit to the ‘Mile High
Must-Sees’, scenic natural beauty of Garden of the Gods, Air Force Academy,
and Cog Railway ride to Pikes Peak Summit for more unforgettable memories.
Traveling further west, tour a mining town, a historical underground gold
mine, Georgetown, Aspen, Breckenridge, and Vail. Cross the Continental Di-
vide, drive through the Eisenhower/Johnson Memorial Tunnel, visit Silver-
thorne and Copper Mountain, all while enjoying breathtaking views. Truly,
you will be “Surrounded by WOW” as we visit Colorado in the fall.
Day I – Ride, Ride, Ride
Bring a book, magazine, DVD or whatever you enjoy most as we leave Jefferson
City for Colby, Kansas. It’s a long drive but with your help we promise to
make it as enjoyable as possible.
Day II – Denver, Colorado….. ‘Mile-High City’
Today our destination, the ‘Mile High City’, Denver, where we meet our step-on
guide for a tour of the Denver Mint, a driving tour of the City and a walking
tour of Historic Lower Downtown. Lodging tonight and tomorrow will be at
the Denver, Cherry Creek Holiday Inn Select. A group dinner is planned at the
hotel.
Day III – Travel South….Living it up in Colorado Springs
As we arrive in Colorado Springs our first adventure will be to tour the Air
Force Academy, unique in its dual role as both an Air Force installation and
university.
Next we spend time at the Garden of the Gods, one of the “10 Great Public
Spaces in America”. Unusual sandstone rock formations up to 300 feet will
certainly ‘WOW’ you. The garden staff are committed to education and shar-
ing the geology, cultural history and ecology with you.
Following lunch, experience a real thriller-- board the Pikes Peak Cog Railroad
for Pikes Peak Summit, elevation over 14,000 feet above sea level! The Railway
is the highest cog railroad in the world, constructed more than a century ago,
offering majestic views and possibly a glimpse of the elusive Colorado bighorn
sheep or playful yellow-bellied marmots. Clever conductors regale train guests
with stories and facts about the history, flora and fauna of the mountain during
the three-hour-and-ten minute round trip journey.
Dinner is planned in the Colorado Springs area, then we return to our hotel in
Cherry Creek for the night.
Day IV – Travel West….Colorado’s Playground, Majestic Mountain Ranges
Traveling West from Denver, we visit Idaho Springs where heritage lives on
through well-preserved buildings and local folklore. Enjoy your own walking
tour of the town, visit the Heritage Museum and perhaps sip a cup of coffee at a
local eatery, visiting with locals. Next we re-board the coach for a short ride to
Phoenix Gold Mine for an adventurous trip to the underground world of the
famous historical ‘Mining District of Trail Creek’.
Continuing our journey farther West with destination Dillon, Colorado, stops
are planned in Silverthorne, Frisco, and Vail.
