Task 2

- Hello, I’m Ken. I live in California, in a hotel, because my parents have a small hotel near the beach.

My ideal holiday is a holiday on the beach, that’s for sure. I love the beach because it’s never boring.

There are a lot of things you can do.

What I like doing the most is swimming, of course. I love the water, especially when there are big

waves. Then I sometimes go into the sea on an air mattress. I am a good swimmer. And I love snor-

kelling. Sometimes I go snorkelling in the morning, when all the other people from the hotel are still

having breakfast. This is the best time of the day because when there are no other people in the

water, the sea is cleaner and I can watch the little fish.

I’d like to try scuba diving too, but I have to wait for a few years until I turn 15 years old. Then I have

to complete a course and pass an exam.

I sometimes make friends with people from other countries. Last year we had guests from Italy; a

group of teenagers so I could make friends with them. I don’t speak Italian. Well, there are a few

words I know, gelati, sì, prego, che bella, you know, but I don’t speak Italian. We were speaking

English all the time. All the Italian kids learn English at school, and a lot of them are very good.

Task 3

Example

- Last night an octopus in a New Zealand zoo escaped from its tank and found its way to the sea

through a drainpipe. The animal could see that its tank was left open, slid down to the floor and then,

made a 10-feet walk on its eight legs to a drainpipe, which led to the sea.

One

- California police spent three hours chasing a unicorn which escaped from a children’s photo shoot.

But wait a minute! Unicorns aren’t real, are they? Well, our unicorn was in fact a pony dressed as a

unicorn. The police finally found her with the help of a helicopter and a radar.

Two

- Researchers taught horses how to say what they need. They trained the horses for 10 minutes a day

to learn the meaning of three pictures. One: I am cold, put a blanket on me! Two: I am hot, take the

blanket off! Three: I am all right. After two weeks, all the horses used these pictures to communicate.

Three

- Scientists from London say that goats can communicate with people like dogs and horses. Goats

look at humans in the eye like dogs do when they want something. Goats are smart. They can learn

how to solve complicated tasks and remember how to do them 10 months later.

Four

- Kansas police set up cameras for the night to check if there were any mountain lions in the area.

Next morning, the policemen were surprised when they watched last night’s footage. They

commented: we could see a grandma, a gorilla, and even Santa Claus. Well we all know that Homo

sapi-ens are the craziest animal of all!

Five

- About 20,000 bees followed a car in Wales for two days. The bees were following their queen which

somehow got inside the boot of the car. In the end, expert beekeepers rescued the queen and

reunited her with the swarm. Nobody got stung.

Six

- If you are walking in a forest in Australia, and you can hear birds speaking English in the trees, you

are not dreaming. Pet parrots escaped from home still remember and use the words their owners

taught them, and they teach these sounds to their wild friends, who imitate them.

Seven

- A white giraffe was photographed in Kenya. The animal was not albino, but has a genetic mutation,

so its skin is white, but its eyes are dark. The same genetic mutation can happen in kangaroos,

turtles, sharks, seahorses, penguins, and even in crocodiles, bats and black bears!

Task 1

Example

- All right, kids! Who knows the answer? Who was the first king of Britain?

- Was it King Arthur, Miss?

One

- Excuse me, Miss! When are we landing?

- In 30 minutes. So please, fold your table, put your armrest down and fasten your seat belt.

Two

- Are you comfortable?

- Yes, thank you, but if nobody comes next to us, could we move a bit to the right? I won’t see the

subtitles because of the tall lady sitting in front of me!

Three

- We are sorry, we don’t accept credit cards. You can pay in cash only.

- Oh, I didn’t know that. Wait a minute, I have to find my wallet.

Four

- Do you know where we are now?

4

- Yes, don’t worry. That large white building there on the right is the swimming pool. The next stop is

ours. Could you press the get-off signal?

Five

- It is amazing how these tropical plants can survive here!

- Yes, we can keep the temperature warm here, so the plants can enjoy at least 25 degrees during

the wintertime as well.

Six

- When is it our turn? I am so excited!

- The presenter told us to wait for 10 more minutes. Try to calm down. Let’s prepare the guitar and

the drums!

Seven

- Can you give me some information about trips to Peru and Chile?

- Of course, Sir. Here are the newest brochures. You can book your holiday right now. The tours are

starting on 23rd June and 1st August.

Task 2

- Hello. My name is Tim Gregory. I’m American and I’m a professional dog walker. This means that

people pay me to walk their dogs. I earn about $100,000 a year. Not bad, is it?

I take the dogs out twice a day, early in the morning and late in the afternoon. The walk usually takes

two hours. I only take the dogs for a walk, I never feed them. As much as I like walking dogs, I think

feeding them is the owner’s duty. On average I take 20 dogs a day for walks. Not all at the same time,

of course. The most I have at any one time is five.

Usually I’m hired by professional people who are too busy to take their dogs for exercise, sometimes

by old ladies who can’t get out of their houses. I think this job is great, because you meet a lot of

interesting people and I really enjoy walking dogs.

I don’t think that my job is hard or stressful to do. Only once did I lose a dog, but luckily, I found him

the next day. The only difficult thing about my job is that sometimes the dogs get into a fight. Then I

pull the leash hard and also shout at them. It usually helps.

The funny thing is that I don’t have a dog. Maybe later when I get tired of taking other people’s dogs

out, I’ll have one of my own.

another dog who seemed to be drowning. Remus the dog rescued Smokey, who isn't as strong of a

swimmer.

One

- A healthy baby boy was born on a metro in the centre of Paris. Rescue workers took the mother and

the child to the nearest hospital. The public transport service of Paris announced that the boy can

use all the buses and the underground for free until the age of 25.

Two

- This weekend, strong winds destroyed a party tent and blew away a portable toilet in a park in

Colorado. First, the toilet crossed the street and crashed into parked cars, then flew up in the air as

high as 10 meters before crashing into the ground again.

Three

An Australian man who won a $1.5 million lottery prize said the ticket was stuck to his refrigerator

door for five weeks before he discovered he was a winner. “I had the ticket on the fridge at home the

whole time,” the man said.

Four

- A visitor to Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom in Florida took a video of a sneaky squirrel stealing

from a store. The shop assistant tried to stop the thief, but the sweet-toothed squirrel could escape

with a packet of M&Ms.

Five

- An alligator in Florida delayed a flight by walking on the runway while the airplane was landing. The

pilot told passengers “Believe it or not there is an alligator on the runway and we are waiting for it to

cross”. Then, the animal found its way to a lake nearby, and the plane could continue on its way to

the airport.

Six

- A California home security camera recorded that a hungry bear broke into a kitchen while nobody

was at home. The bear climbed in through an open window and stole some snacks. The couple living

there said maybe the same animal broke into their home last year by knocking down the front door.

Seven

- Wildlife trappers were called to a school in Thailand to remove a 12-foot snake found in a student

bathroom. “We will try to prevent snakes from getting into the school again," teacher Kraiwut

Banmon said.

- It is a baboon. Do you know what a baboon is?

- It is kind of a monkey, isn’t it?

- Yes, it is. Now be quiet and watch the video.

Three

- Just now, in the hall.

- Oh, I think it’s Aunt Kate’s. She must have left it here yesterday when she came for a visit.

Four

- Yes, Sir, how can I help you?

- I’d like to buy something nice for my wife. It is our wedding anniversary today.

- Congratulations! What about these fresh red roses?

- But Mum! This wasn’t my fault! That idiot was crossing on the red man!

- Still, drive a bit slower.

- But I am already driving at 40 kilometers per hour!

Seven

- OK, calm down and try to tell me what you saw.

- I could see a man dressed in black pyjamas climb over our fence to the street.

- And when was that?

- At about 6:30 p.m., when I got home.

Task 2

- In July our family went to Dominica, a small island in the Caribbean Sea for a holiday. We arrived at

11 o’clock on Monday and we stayed in a small town called Good Hope.

In our hotel there was only one other family from France. I met the daughter who is called Lilian. She

was very pretty.

On Tuesday I spent the whole day on the beach with Lilian. Dad wanted me to go with him to explore

the island but I didn’t. We went snorkeling with the French girl and we saw some amazing things. I’ve

never seen such beautiful fish before and I’ve never met such a beautiful girl before, either.

On Wednesday I went to the Northern Forest Reserve with my dad. Unfortunately, Lilian didn’t come

with us. We climbed up the Morne Diablontins, the highest mountain on the island. The view from

the top was fantastic.

The next day I met Lilian by the pool in the evening. We had a drink and talked a lot. We both had a

great time.

On Friday we were hit by a strong tropical storm—almost a hurricane and it rained heavily all day.

Lilian and I spent the whole day playing cards.

Saturday was the last day of my holiday. I knew we had to say goodbye. Although we will keep in

touch through social media, I think I’m going to miss Lilian very much.

Task 3

Example

- A deer got into a metro station in Virginia. Security cameras show that the frightened animal runs

into the station, then luckily, it finds the exit. Nobody knows how it got there.

One

- A small but brave chihuahua helped a girl when a pitbull attacked her. The chihuahua was able to

get the aggressive dog away from her. The police captured the pitbull afterwards. The girl ended up

in hospital and will need a really long operation.

Two

- Extreme sportsman Ross Edgley is planning to swim around Britain, without touching dry land once.

The 2,700 kilometers-long swim will take him 100 days to complete. If everything goes well, he will

finish on 8th September.

Three

- People in Los Angeles can have a cup of coffee and play with dogs at the same time at a dog café.

Every dog in the café came from a shelter and the guests can adopt them. To get one cup of coffee

and 55 minutes with the dogs costs 10 dollars.

Four

- One study found that people use their phones up to five hours a day. That is too much. With a new

software you can see how much time you spend on your phone and which apps you use. Knowing

this, you can decide to use your phone less.

Five

- People found nine baby ducks waddling about a village in England. Their mother was nowhere to be

found and they needed a parent. Luckily, ten-year-old Labrador, Fred, took them in, and he became

their father and the ducks love him. They often ride on his back!

Mount Everest. One of them is a Sherpa guide who climbed Mount Everest for a record 22nd time.

He is 48 years old and is already planning his next trip.

Seven

- In Quito, Ecuador’s capital, the police held a retirement ceremony for their dogs. Officers gave the

dogs medals to recognize them for their service. The dogs that retired will now be living with families

as pets.

- Two return tickets to Exeter, please.

- Yes. That’s 40 pounds, please.

- Can I pay by card?

- Certainly.

- Could you tell me which track the train leaves from?

- It is track seven.

- Thank you.

One

- Yes, please?

- I’d like to borrow these, please.

- Can I have your card?

- Here you are.

- Thanks. Let me see. Six books and a DVD. Is that all?

- Yes, thank you.

Two

- Have you ever been here?

- No, this is my first time.

- I spent two days by this lake last summer. It was amazing!

- Did you sleep in a tent?

- Yes. And we cooked the fish we caught from the lake over a campfire!

Three

- Oh, not again! What has happened to your T-shirt?

- I’m sorry, Mum. It was the dog’s fault.

- Did it jump on you again?

- Yes, after having fun on the lakeshore. Now I am covered in mud.

- I hope the washing machine can help!

Four

- Is this Agatha Christie book yours?

- Oh, you found it, thanks!

- Yes, it was here, on the balcony. I started reading it a bit, and I like it very much!

- It’s thrilling, isn’t it?

- Yes! Can I borrow it after you finish it?

- Sure!

Five

- Mmm, this ice-cream is very good! Where did you buy it?

- Believe it or not, it is homemade!

- No way! What did you put in it?

- I can’t tell you, it’s Grandma’s recipe, so only she can tell you if she wants.

Six

- Excuse me, I believe I left my wallet here about 10 minutes ago.

- What did it look like?

- It was a yellow leather wallet with a flower decoration on it.

- Is this the one?

- Yes, oh, I’m so thankful!

- One of our customers found it on that chair. It must have dropped out of your handbag.

Seven

- Which number did you pick?

- Number eight.

- All right. Your topic is ‘Environment Protection’.

Are you ready to start?

- Yes, I am. So, I would like to talk about protecting the environment on three levels: personal,

community and national levels. First, we have to think of our ecological footprint…

Eight

- Come on! Faster! If we don’t speed up, we won’t get to the village by daylight.

- But I am sooo tired! Can’t we have a 10-minute rest here?

- Do you want to get lost in the dark forest for the night?

- But we have GPS, don’t we?

- Well. The battery of my phone is dead, so we don’t have

anything for now.

- OK, then let’s go faster!

Nine

- Has it started? Has it started?

- Just now. The first number is 26.

- Oh, no. That’s not good for us…

- Hey, the second is 78! You marked that, didn’t you?

- Yes! And the third one is 63! Got it! Two out of three!

- The fourth is 33! Not good. But the fifth…

- 85! Bingo! We had three numbers right! Do they pay anything for it?

Ten

- So, let’s plan our holiday in Rome!

- Yes. Let’s visit the Forum and the Colosseum on Monday, all right? No museums, because they are

closed on Mondays.

- OK, but we can go to the Vatican City on Tuesday. Can you book the tickets online?

- I’ll look.

- Great idea! Italian coffee and ice-cream, here we come!

4. FELADATSOR

Task 2

Example

- Hello and welcome to “Animals Are like Us”. Today, as usual, you are going to hear more wonderful

stories about animals which behaved like humans in the true sense of the word.

Our first story is about a dog, Terry, who turned blind after he became ill. The eight-year-old terrier

lost his eyesight completely, and kept bumping into furniture inside the home, and could no longer

find his way out to the garden. At about this time, Terry’s owners let a stray cat in their home from

the street, and the two animals immediately formed an amazing bond. Melly, the cat, became Terry’s

guide: now she leads him inside the house and in the garden too. The two unlikely friends now sleep

together and the cat helps the dog find his way everywhere.

Our second story is about three dogs, who successfully learnt how to drive a car! Engineers trained

three shelter dogs: a schnauzer, a collie and a Labrador to steer the wheel, change gears and handle

the pedals, in other words: to drive a car together. The trio drove a special Ford around a racetrack at

20 kilometers per hour. With this, engineers wanted to show people how intelligent dogs are, and

how important it is to look after them and support animal shelters. Since the drive, all three dogs

have found a real home.

Our next story is about a whale which had good enough manners to say thank you. Whale expert

Sam Hickson visits the Gulf of Mexico every year to study whales. On his last trip, he saw a whale

which got caught in a giant fishing net. Sam spent an hour setting the whale free. After this, the

whale swam near Sam’s boat for a long time and jumped into the air about 40 times to say thank you

for getting its freedom back.

And now, some more exotic animals! Joe the camel lives in Britain in a farmhouse with other camels,

reindeer and goats, which the owners, Susan and Tim, rent out for television shows, film shootings

and photography. Joe likes human company and would never miss breakfast with his owners. Now

he has a place near the breakfast table, where he can have his favorite: cereals and bananas on toast.

And finally, another story from the farm featuring Morley, the dog, and Donna, the pig. Morley got

an ear infection, and his owners took him to the vet, but even after this, he suffered from an

earache. But whenever his owners rubbed his ears, the pain would go away, and the dog would feel

better. Donna, the pig, another animal on the farm could understand this. One afternoon, when

Morley lay down to sleep in the yard, Donna went up to him, and started rubbing his ears with her

nose. From that day on, whenever Morley lay down, Donna would trot over to rub his ears to make

him feel better.

- Wow, is that new? Can I look at it?

- Yes, but be careful, it was really expensive. But it takes really good pictures!

Two

- All right, you can open the box now!

- Wow, something is moving inside. Oh no, it can’t be! A puppy! Thank you!

Three

- Can you help me here? I can’t do this myself, I need some help.

- All right. Hold this rope for me. Are you sure you want to sleep here?

Four

- So, here we are in the main square. Look at all these beautiful old buildings and the fountain!

- Yes, that white one is a church, a medieval cathedral. And next to it is a souvenir shop. Shall we go

in?

Five

- So, here it is. You can keep it. My brother rode it for about five years, then, he bought a new one,

because it was too small for him.

- Yes, I can see that it is in a really good condition. Thanks. I’ll test it tomorrow.

Six

- Hey, Terry, can you pass me that dish with the meat? The fire is good enough now.

- Well, it’s going to be sunny, but be prepared for chilly evenings.

5. FELADATSOR

Task 2

- Hello, everyone. In our radio programme, I am going to share some fun facts about animals. Well,

today we’ll start with that magnificent creature, the elephant. Did you know that zoo elephants live

longer than all mammals apart from man? They can survive up to the age of 80 in the zoo. Some

mosquitos, on the other hand, only live for one day. And how much food do you think the elephant

eats a day? The average adult human eats around a kilo—one-and-a-half kilos if he’s very hungry. An

elephant eats 150 kilos a day, and drinks about 180 liters of water. Not cheap to take out to

McDonald’s! Still on the subject of food, the South American giant anteater is also a big eater. He

eats 30,000 ants a day. Yes, 30,000.

Now let’s have a look at some clever animals! Octopuses have an unusually large brain—this helps

them to solve problems and to use strategies to find food. Squirrels’ intelligence focuses only on one

thing: food—but not just getting it. Their memory is excellent: they can remember where they store

their food. The pig is the fourth most intelligent animal in the world. It is as smart as a three-year-old

child. Interesting, isn’t it? And which animal is the smartest of all? The chimpanzee, of course! And

why? Chimpanzees can cooperate, change their environment and use tools, too!

And finally, some bad news for the intelligent pig, I’m afraid. Pork is now officially the most eaten

meat in the world. Well, that’s it for today. I’m going for my bacon sandwich now.

One

- Nabi Tajima was the oldest person in the world. She was born in August 1900, which made her the

last person born in the 19th century. She died in a hospital at the age of 117. Mrs. Tajima was the

third oldest person in recorded human history.

- There are only 100 Amur leopards left in the wild. In March, two baby leopards were born at the

Vienna Zoo. They were blind and helpless when they were born, but now they can play together. The

zoo staff says that the baby cats are ‘truly happy’.

Four

- In Japan, there was an incident at a theme park when a roller coaster suddenly stopped and left 60

people hanging in the air. They were upside down and around 30 meters above the ground. It took

people about two hours to rescue them, but nobody was injured.

Five

- The smallest monkey in the world weighs only 100 grams. That is as much as an apple. The baby

monkeys weigh just 15 grams and are smaller than a human thumb!

Six

- The oldest oak trees in Europe are in Britain. They were babies in the 12th century, so now they are

- Try this pill. It usually helps me. The pain will go away in 30 seconds.

Two

- So, what do we need for that Jamie Oliver recipe you want to try?

- We need cottage cheese, fresh beetroot… wait, we can buy the cottage cheese right here!

Three

- How much will this be for 48 hours?

- The price is £25, plus the petrol, of course. You have to drop off the car with a full tank.

Five

- Congratulations! What was it like?

- Well, I did well, but in the end, parking was a little bit difficult. But I passed!

- Hello, I’m Cheryl. I work for the Chicago Fire Department. I start work at 6 a.m. and I finish at 6 a.m.

the next morning. That’s 24 hours nonstop! But it is OK, because I usually work only two or three

days a week. I work one day, then I’m off for two days, then I work for another day, then I’m off for

two days.

What do I do? I am a paramedic. A paramedic is a doctor who works in an ambulance. We have some

peaceful days, when a lot of the time is spent in the fire station just waiting for people to call 911,

but there are lots of things we do to pass the time. We have to check our equipment every day—this

is really important! We also do a lot of physical exercise. It is very important to keep in shape. At

night we sleep.

We sometimes go to schools to teach students about first aid. I feel that there are some students

who are really interested in my job. They have a lot of questions about it. If somebody wants to do

what I do, then the most important thing is to work hard at school and take an interest in first aid.

And of course, you need to be good at the sciences, including chemistry, biology and physics.

Task 2

- I am a retired jazz saxophonist. In the mid-1980s, I played a lot at The Silver Hat Piano Bar in Paris.

One night in the middle of our show, a young woman in a blue dress and a light leather jacket walked

in with her small partner. She sat down to a table near the band and ordered a cocktail for herself

and an orange juice for her friend.

They sat and listened to the music. When we had finished the song, the little friend, who was dressed

in yellow overalls and a red cap, carefully put his orange juice down on the table, and they both

clapped their hands happily.

I still remember them. Do you know why? They were unforgettable! Was it because of the woman?

No, she was ordinary, she could have been from anywhere, but her little friend…was a chimpanzee!

- Mirri, my cat, hates it when I use my iPad because then I don’t play with him. You might think I am a

modern person, because I am 72 years old, and I have an iPad. One year, I had a fall at home. I had

terrible pains, so I couldn’t get up, I was just lying on the living room floor for 16 hours. I couldn’t

move and I couldn’t get to the phone and call for help. Mirri stayed next to me, but sud-denly, he ran

to the bedroom.

What’s he doing? I wondered. To my surprise, he started to push something toward me. It was my

iPad. He probably didn’t know what it was, but he knew that it made me happy.

Thanks to Mirri, I was able to contact a friend, who then called the ambulance. I spent the next eight

days in hospital. It turned out that I broke my hip. When I returned home, I bought Mirri a can of the

finest fish as a thank you gift.

Task 2

- Once there lived a monkey in a banana tree by a river. He was alone, but he was happy and the tree

gave him plenty of sweet fruit to eat.

One day a hungry crocodile came swimming up the river. “Hello”, called the monkey, who was a

friendly animal. “Hello”, replied the crocodile, surprised. “Do you know where I can get some food?"

he asked. “I am so hungry—there aren’t any fish left in the river.”

“Well,” said the monkey, “I don't eat fish so I don’t know—but I have a lot of bananas in my tree.

Would you like to try some?” He threw some down to the crocodile. The crocodile loved them very

much. The monkey said: “Come back whenever you are hungry.”

After that the crocodile visited the monkey every day. The two animals became friends—they told

each other stories while eating. One day the crocodile began talking about his wife and family. “Why

didn't you tell me earlier that you had a wife?” asked the monkey. “Please take some bana-nas for

her.” The crocodile thanked him and took some of the fruit for his wife.

The crocodile's wife liked the bananas, but she was more interested in the monkey. She said: “let’s

invite the monkey for a meal—and then we can eat him up”.

“But he is my only true friend, I will never eat him”, the crocodile said. The crocodile’s wife had a

plan. “Oh, I am so sick I will die!—she said—Only a monkey's heart can cure me. If you love me you

will get your friend, the monkey, and let me eat his heart.”

The poor crocodile did not know what to do—he did not want to eat his friend, but he could not let

his wife die. At last he decided to bring the monkey to his wife.

“O dear friend”, he called as he reached the banana tree. “My wife wants to see you for a meal.

Come with me, I'll carry you on my back.” The monkey agreed and jumped onto the crocodile's back.

The crocodile swam with him out into the deep wide river. When they were far away from the

banana tree, he said, “My wife is very ill. The only thing that will cure her is a monkey's heart.” The

monkey was horrified. What could he do to save himself? He thought quickly and said “Dear friend, I

am very sorry about this. But I have left my heart behind in the tree. Let’s go back so that I can fetch

it for your wife.”

The crocodile believed the monkey. He turned and swam back. The monkey jumped off his back and

up to his tree. “False and foolish friend,” he called. “Don't you know that we carry our hearts within

us? I will never trust you again or ever give you fruit from my tree. Go away and don't come back

again.”

The crocodile felt really foolish—he had lost a friend and the bananas. The monkey had saved himself

because he knew that a crocodile could never be his true friend.

you live here no better than the ants. You must come and stay with me and I promise you will taste

the best food ever”.

So when he returned to town he took the country mouse with him and showed him into a larder

containing flour, corn flakes and honey. The country mouse had never seen anything like it and they

sat down to enjoy the fancy dinner. But as they were starting, the door opened and someone came

in. The two friends jumped up and hid themselves in a narrow and uncomfortable hole. When all was

quiet again, they came out. But someone else came in for the second time, and they had to hide

again. This was too much for the country mouse. “Goodbye,” he said, “I'm off. You live richly, I can

see, but you are surrounded by dangers whereas at home I can enjoy my simple dinner of roots and
