we at the DSWCI Board, wish each and every member of,our International Club

A MERRY CHRIST;MAS and A HAPPY NEW YEAR.

all who contributed to our magazine - Shortwave News - during 1985. in one way or another, we would not be able to make SWN as variable

About the content in this SWN, I can tell you, that unfortunately you his new job, is still

typing the Unofficial Radio section, I have not heard anything from Ken Baird nor Simon Luttrell, who is

!t. will return in the January issue. so there will be no pages with Unofficial Radio this month. I hope

As sirely will have noticed, the page 8 of SWN, November issue was not a SW-tips page as it was meant. I did not received this page from Peter Pirbos, and nor did the printer, so I decided to make a new page

ste, just to full-fill the blank page. Usually I really don't like to make such a page with press- rigs.. and especially not in the middl'e of the SW-tips section. But this was the only thing to do, as

our printer already had printed all the rest of SWN this month. So, this is the explanation, hoping this will snot occur again.

Our Greek member, Alexander Koutamanis, has made some headings on his computer printer, which we will use in stead of the old ones. This is the heading for Geoalert Meudon, which have been used for a couple of months now, and in this SWN you will find a new heading for the Clandestine section. Also a heading has beenmade for our Tropical Bands Survey Updater. to make those "e;.si;g:im;;a;e.aa~; appreciate it.

Thank you very much to Alexander, for taking the time If other of our members are .able to make some illustra-

tions of this we ~111 very much hear about it. Speaking about the Clandestine sec- tion, I want to remember you, thai Mathias very much would like to have your news and Tips of Clandestine stations. Still, many members send their Clandestine loggings to the hq. - please forward them to Mathis!

1 would also like to draw your attention on our DSWCI Crossword-Puzzle, which Andreas Comte was so kind to make for us. It can be found on page 23 in the December issue, and the deadline for sending us the

ion is on January 21st. Here is something you can "puzzle" with in the Christmas time, if there is ng to hear on the SW-bands. And that concludes my editorial for this month. See you all again in

the new year - I hope, and please take care, best 73's deXq*

The front page icture: It is seldom we are able to bring a d cture of our female members, however I'm glad to show yoi Martina Drefahl of FRG. Her equipment is a Martens Loop antenna, Yaesu FRG 7700. The

.antenna is for MW listening. By the way, you can read a letter from Martina in the Letterbox column this month, How about our other female memebers, does this not urge you to send a photo and a letter to us?

Hello again and welcome to the last World News for 1985. There has been some interesting developments during the year seeing the introduction of new stations - particularly from the USA - but pollution from interference and jamming is now intense. Since the recent "Super-Power" talks I've been watching for any signs of a reduction in jamming by the Soviet Union but, as I type this, there seems to be no change of policy. Perhaps its too soon and maybe 1986 will herald a change of minds. There's still lot's to listen to and I recommend daytime on ,31, 41 & 49 metres for a few surprises. Now, let's see what's in the NEWS, I AFGHANISTAN The European service at 1730-1930 is now heard on 5900 & 6020 from Soviet txers . E at 1900 and G at 1830. ES/E what appears to be the Urdu service (sched 1230-1430) is heard on 7285 mixing with Poland and VOA. This was being heard on 9755 previously. The English service for S&SE Asia 0900-1030 has disappeared off 17655 to be replaced by Radio Moscow's World Service. Maarten van Delft (vice-pree. Benelux DX-Club), Wagenetraat , 81 WP Utreoht. Holland writes in an ouen letter to

ANDREAS PIROQ: Erektageparken m,2B, 280; Lyngby, DK

"Dear Androae, Only todmy I read your JR&feature in the Jan. edition of SWIV. Thle is beoauee I em not a DSWCI- member, but I read SWN through an epohange of magarines DSWCI and BDXC have. Our edltora, of oouree, first read the inooming mapsines and afterwards they are paeeed on to the boerd-members whioh is only fair1

The rea6on I am writing to you is to express my surprioe at your enthueiamm for JRC-products (I take it you are a JRC-agent?), in partioular their NRD-515. After all, when taking a oloee look at it, you cannot but find: 1. It has no built-in preamp to mmke up for the 6 dB lees.

(or more) Incurred when the eignal travels through one of the paeeive bendfilters and the diode ring-mixer. It is very unfortunate (and incredible) that this has been overlooked by JRC'e engineer6 l e it mekee the eet a medioore performer above 15 MRe.

2. Although the 515 is an expensive rx, it does not even feature a notch-filter. JRC, however, ehould know that this is often a valuable asset to what you call "expe- rienoed and serious DX-era". So now you have to spend more money on an add-on notoh- filter, although there is, of oouree, nothing like a good built-in IF-notoh. After all, when using an out- board notch-unit, the rx'e ALGC will act on the etrongeet eignal received at a time and this may just be the eig- nml you want to eliminateI

3. ;;di;Aizredible too that a set of this "aeeumed quality muffera ooneiderable from overload, blocking

frequanoiee with intermodulation products which should be free for DX to come1 Indeed JRC themeelves admitted in a letter to me that the 515 has an intercept point of only e 7 dBml (More ehoaking even wae to read that the IP of their professional NRD-93 ie even leeer t 6 dRml) Of ooureez most overloading oan be cured by using a good preseleotor, but thi6 meane onoe again spending more money and besides, the we of an outboard preeelee- tor does not enhance tuning comfort.

4. I find it pretty hard to believe that (at thie prioel) JRC eavee on the filtera used for the 515. They are not first-class aooording to measurements and mediocre aoo. to DX-ore who are both experienced and honest. Thie ie eepeoially hard to take einoe the set doesn't hare any- thing like a variable bandwidth oontrol.

5. You speak of %uggedneee of oonetruotion and quality control". This, I think, is merely oommercial bla-bla me I know of three DX-era here who ran into ooetly re- pairs on their 515, in two oamee even within 6 months after purchase1

6. finally: what good ie a terribly expansive memory unit which cannot oven moan or mtore frequenoiem togother with the desired mode of reaeption?

Stop dreaming Andreaal If you feellike praising JROr fine, but don't orerdo it."

In another letter to AndreaB Hro& Maarten van Delft writes in a letter of October 21:

"Dear Andreaa, The faot that you have eo far remained dlent to my letter of Way 1 la4t is, of course, entirely up to you, but it doee not mean that I should tacitly l OOept another artiole you wrote in the April/Way 1985 isme of SWN.

,How oould you - for heaven'e eakel - oompare two unitm which by concept and purpose are entirely different? HOW could you then even take one "as a point of referenoev8 u you 6ayPI

Washing powder and a spindryer are both quite useful in getting your laundry done, but they oan never be oom- pared in any wmy. Therefore you are both fooling youxwelf and your readera In oomparing a devioe called a premeleo- tor and one known ae an antenna impedance matching unit, or, eimply: antenna tuner.

I feel that muoh "testa" are degrading the otherwlse l xoellent SWR and misleading the DSWOI membership."

Andreas Pir6g writes a letter to Waarten van Delft on November 13th:

"Dear Sir, Thank you for your impremfve letters, I do really enjoy and apprioiate any kind of arltioal response conoerning artiolem of mine, published In SWWewm. However, your objeotione oan hardly be aooepted. So far, my experience with product6 from JRC ha6 been ex- tremely po6itive. The RRD-515 is a really outstanding performer, well-suited to both serious SWlistening/moni- toring and advanced DXing. Wo other standard or amateur- class communication receivers actually available on the market are, in my opinion, aompetitive with the RRD-515 model. Only the semi-profemeional and now-discontinued WA from Drake soorea better, at leaet for certain variables.

A built-in preamplifier would probably be a desirable addendum. However, a built-in notah filter is still some- what problematical. On the one hand, an IF notoh provides excellent results in eliminating heterodynes, on the other hand, it usually produces severe audio distortion in AW mode - a drawback (of. R7A).

Scanning faailitiee are, in my opinion, of secondary consideration, too. Generally, soanners work poorly with shortwave broadcasts, because of oonstant fading.

Far more important are, in my opinion, suoh useful fea- tures asI Passband Tuning, 4 selectivity positions which are selevtable independent of mode and the AQC f/s/off arrangement. The NRD-515 includes all of them.

The configuration of IF filters offered by Japan Radio (both standard and optional bandwidths, i.e. 6.0, 2.4, 0.6 and 0.3 or 1.0 or 1.8 khe in AUX) is more than satis- factory for a variety of DX/SW-monitoring applications, even in the most oongested signal environment. Still, taking into consideration that only one of them (6.0kh.j is a hand-selected ceramic, whereas the rest are a mixture of both meohanical (Kokusai) and xtal-lattioe (NOK) fll- ters (note: receivers from Yaesu, Trio-Kenwood, ICOW etc., even those priced elsewhere between US D Boo,- US D 1,100 utilice, ae standard, c h l a p oeramia IF filters, often thoee from MuRata), your suggestion that the factory (JRC) has been saving suoh itema, lacks any reasonable justiflca- tion.

As regards the dynamic range of the NRD-515, the IP3 of "only"+ 7 dBm is, in my opinion, a very fine value, indeed, when cornPared against that of -10 to -35 dBm found in most popular and amateur-olass oommunioation reoeirers, today. so far, I have never observed any overloading phe- nbmena or anything like that. Also, several internatfoual- ly well-known sources (of. QST, November 1981, funk, Jan./ Feb. 1981 and WRTH 1982) &ave praised the NRD-515 for its excellent strong signal handling. R e m e m b e r : In general, overloading oan be eliminated or, at least, alleviated by means of an attenuator. The preseleotor is absolutely not suitable for that purpose (of. Item Nr.3 of your letter of Way lst, 1985).

Now, as regards the ruggedness of design and qual%tY control, I must stress that your ereprimand" (see: Item Sr.5, 100 oit) eeema to be based on halluoinatione, since I have never written that the NRD-515 equals OommerQial- grade models from JRC, in that reepOOt. In faot, I wrote juet the opposite (cf. SWWewe, January 1985, p-23, 1st

column below). yet, I will not acoept your protest against my reoent

test-review on the preselector NFQ-505 from JRC (Of* SWNews ~~ril/my 1985, p.48), where I compared it with the Wizuho

KX-3 Sky Coupler. In fact, both units are in most respects very sin%-

lar. Both are passive (unamplified) devices, designed after the mame nrinoinle and intended for the same purpose: to tune the random lenght antenna to matoh the inooming signal into the impedance requirements of the reoeiver, at any de&red frequency within the LF/RF speotrnm.

Allusions to the APO-505, indicating ito d.milaritj to the Miauho KX-3 oan also be found in other mouroee (of. Rainer Liohte, KW-Empfangsantennen, 1982, KSln, p.128).

Well, I hope, my anewer is clear and substantial enough to avoid misunderetandingm of any nature."

Hello to you BARALD KUBL, Rahler Str. 40, D-4990 LWbbea We&f., West ilermany. Rarald is our very new member and here i6 his letter:

"Qreetings to all DSWCI-members all over the world1 I'm Rarald Huhl, 22 years old and I'm living in the northern part of West Germany. I'm a member of DSWCI einoe October 1985 and DXing is my hobby since April 19 With my Crundig Satellit lAoa I reoeired stations from about 170 countries and till today I go& QSLs from 150 aountries.

Wy special interests are tropical bands, utility and stations from the antarctic region. Because of my middl class reoeiver with its telesoope-antenna it's relative seldom that I receive stations from l ntarotis (till tod I received stations on 9106 and 15474 khz). Maybe there are DXers who can give me hints at QROs and times of such stations?? My dream irr to buy a much better reoeiv like the ICOM IC-R71E, but I'm a student and money is rare. Besides my Satellit I use a Daiwa ~~-406 K filter and a Tono Theta 550x Communioations Terminal for RTTI.

I'm also member of ADDX and KDKC (which unfortunate1 oloses this year). I w you find someone for Utility Shack. I have'nt enough knowledge for doing suoh a job.

Beeides DXing I'm Interested in oommunloating with people. Last year I wrote a letter to SWAWs *'Voice of Namibia" and some months later I got a verifying lettex with a hint that my letter had been published in “SWAPS Bulletin". Some weeks later I got 7 letters from IVami- bians from all parts of Africa and Cuba. It warn a great ful feeling and with some of them I'm still in contact. This possibility of commun$oating with people you sure3 never will eee is another ampeot of the hobby, which le very Important for me. That's all for tatay. So long and good DXl PS: I s reading letterlox. Don't clone it

Mr. Bjorn Franason, Lunds, Vasterhedge, S-~S-;x~4" VIBBY 2

Dear Mr. Fransson,

Thank you very nuch for your most interesting letter reporting reception of Radio Botswana OIL the unusual frequency of 4948 KHz on 10th January. Prom the details of the report and the enclosed tape I have "0 doubt that it was Radio Botswaa to which you were listecing. and if QOU and another listener say that you heard the ,sie"al on 4943 KHz the" I must believe you!

I can only assume that we had an operational error for that evening. Our equipment is frequency - synthesised and it is possible that the switches on the marker osti- tar were set 100 KHz in error following a frequency chance from 9593 KRs earlier in the day.

I am most grateful *or your letter calling oup attention to t!,e mistake and have already taken step" to try to ensure that it doesn't happen again.

I an of course returning your tape and other enclosures.

Yours sincerely,

Lkc D.W. Harris

468 pages. DM 60.- I SBN 3-924509-86-7

The fully revised new edition now includes additionally the VLF and LF frequency band from 0 to 150 kHz which is covered by most general coverage receivers, as wel I as a new chapter listing the transmission schedules of all meteorological FAX stations with full details. The 1985 revision of the 1982 Radio Regulations, as well as the new CC ITT gentex and telex service codes in force since 01 October 1985, are also listed.

This unique manual covers the complete shortwave range from 3. to 30 MHz, plus the adjacent frequency bands from 0 to 150 kHz and from 1.6 to 3 MHz, and includes details on all types of utility stations including FAX and RTTY stations. Besides CW, FAX, SSB and standard RTTY with its derivates in the Arabic, Cyri I I ic and third-shift Cyri I I ic alphabets, sophisticated modulation systems are represented by hundreds of frequencies of stations using VFT (Voice-Frequency Telegraphy), FEC (Forward Error Correction) and SITOR (Simplex Teleprinting Over Radio) / AMTOR.

The numerical frequency list covers 15083 frequencies of stations which have been monitored during 1985, thereof 29 % RTTY and 3 % FAX. Frequency, call sign, name of the station, I TU country/geographical symbol, type(s) of modulation and corresponding return frequency , or times, of reception and detai Is, are I isted. The alphabetical call sign I ist covers 2976 call signs, with name of the station, ITU country/geographical symbol, and corresponding frequency (-ies). An additional section - arranged in country order - covers 365 stations operating without complete official call sign, and co-channel stations. The formation of call signs is explained in the Radio Regulations on the identifi- cation of stations. The table of allocations of international call sign series is also included.

80 RTTY press services are listed on 502 frequencies - not only in the numerical frequency list, but also - chronologically in a comprehensive list for easy access around the clock; - alphabetically in country order with frequency, call sign and schedule.

Additional alphabetical indices cover - Schedules of 63 meteorological FAX stations on 239 frequencies. - 80 meteorological RTTY stations on 261 frequencies. - 867 mnemonic abbreviations, including all utility station name abbreviations,
