Once the students decided that they wanted to help the homeless, Christina Wessman, an eighth grader at Merton Williams Middle School, took the idea and ran with it, making lists of people to ask for donations and the supplies they would need. The group decided that they would spend a Saturday outside, no matter what the weather, living in tents with only a fire to keep warm. They gathered donations from family members, friends, teachers and local businesses, raising over $1,200 so far for two organizations that help homeless in the community – the Open Door Mission and Bethany House. The Open Door Mission, located on Plym- outh Ave. in Rochester, provides overnight housing for men, community meals for men, women and children, and religious services. Bethany House in Rochester is a Catholic Worker House of Hospitality that provides emergency housing for women and women with children, and assistance to women with food, formula, diapers, cloth- ing, household items, and personal hygiene products. “We watched a video about a tent city in Nashville, TN that was ruined by a flood,” said Logan Matthews, a third grader at Village Elementary School. “Some people were mad because they didn’t want it set up again near them.” The group borrowed tents and sleeping bags for their own tent city from Mandy and Paul Tramonto and Beth and Jon Jamison, family friends. While they could use the indoor bathroom, they had no ac- cess to electronics and spent the day, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., making forts, playing cards, listening to the radio, singing and playing games. At lunchtime, they had a simple meal of Ramen noodles and rolls. “This was only a day, but it gave us an idea of what it is like to be homeless and how we are fortunate to have the things we have,” said Cole. Christina related the experience to Christmas when so many kids want ex- pensive gifts and think they don’t have enough, putting things like flat screen TVs on their Christmas lists. “Home- less people hardly even have clothes,” she said. Blodgett, who has been babysitting some of the children since they were infants, said she’s hoping to do the event again next year. “Our goal was to raise $500 and the kids far surpassed that,” she said. “I’m very proud of them.” The students raised over $1,200 for two charities with promises for even more dona- tions after the holiday recess. Conservation Tree and Shrub Program releases 2015 species list Monroe County Soil and Water Conservation District has released their Conservation Tree and Shrub species list for the spring of 2015. Offered for pre-order this year are more than 59 dif- ferent species of bare-root conifers, hardwood trees, shrubs, wildflowers and groundcovers, as well as seed mixes and other products used for conservation projects. Packages range in unit size and price, from a bundle of 10 plants for as low as $11, to bundles of 100 plants for an average cost of $84. New species this year include: American Hornbeam, Coralberry, Fraser Fir, Hackber- ry and Tulip Tree. The Conservation District has also updated their se- lection of multi-packs where homeowners can choose from 8 pre-packaged plant combinations that help ac- commodate a homeowner’s conservation needs. Rather than receiving a single pack of ten trees/shrubs com- posed of one species, the multi-packs offer two plants in five different species; perfect for the suburban con- servationist. Many of these multi-packs have been re- vamped this year with new species options. As always, species adapted to Monroe County site conditions have been selected to provide a variety of conservation uses. “Planting trees and shrubs is perhaps the most effec- tive way for individuals to help keep our environment clean and green,” said District Director Kelly Emerick. “In addition to providing shade, privacy, wildlife habi- tat, borders, windbreaks and snow fences, trees provide many environmental benefits not visible to the eye. They work as filters to help protect drinking water, clean the air of pollutants, stabilize soil to prevent erosion, and reduce noise by acting as sound barriers. Trees can help cool your home in the summer, and break cold winds in the winter, helping to reduce energy use. They can even add value to your property,” Emerick said. The Conservation Tree and Shrub Program is a pre- order program with a deadline for ordering of March 10, 2015. The distribution of the plant material will occur at the Monroe County ecopark on April 23 and 24 from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The remaining plant stock will be sold on April 25 from 9 a.m. to noon. Clarkson resident named College at Brockport VP for Advancementby Kristina Gabalski

Clarkson resident Mike Andriatch will become the College at Brockport’s new Vice President for Advancement on Janu-ary 1.

Andriatch, a Brockport alumnus, has served the college for nearly three de-cades, most recently as Assistant Vice President for Advancement. He will re-place Roxanne Johnston, who is stepping down to spend more time with family. She will remain with the college part-time as senior development officer.

Andriatch received his bachelor’s degree from the College at Brockport in 1985.

He was able to begin working in the sports information office part-time after graduation as he had completed an intern-ship there during his last semester.

“I feel way too young to be in my 30th year at Brockport,” Andriatch says.

He has served the college over those years in various sports information, alum-ni relations, development and advance-ment capacities.

“The people I have had the honor to learn from and work for and with - John Halstead, Roxanne Johnston and so many others - have shaped my professional ca-reer,” Andriatch says. “As we transition, our Advancement team will work incred-ibly hard to reach our Comprehensive Campaign goal ahead of schedule and move Brockport’s engagement with all of our constituents to new heights.”

The $25 million Comprehensive Cam-paign is the largest in size, scope and di-mension in the college’s history. “We will be doing many more campaigns down the road,” Andriatch says.

He notes that his experiences at Brock-port have prepared him well for his new, executive position.

“I’ve created relationships over the years with alumni and future alumni,” Andriatch explains.

He says he finds his work very fulfilling, as his job involves speaking with donor alumni, professors emeriti, retired faculty and staff, “... to help them give back to

Mike Andriatch

Brockport ... whether that’s coming in to talk to students, reconnecting with other alumni, or in the case of a significant gift, matching (the gift) to the needs of the col-lege.”

Andriatch grew up in the Buffalo area, but has made the Sweden/Brockport/Clarkson community his home since he came to Brockport for college.

“I’ve had the opportunity to go other places, but have stayed,” he says. “Brock-port is a special place, both the community and the college. I’m looking forward to the next challenge in my career.”

Andriatch and his wife have three chil-dren and he is a former member and past president of the Brockport Central School District Board of Education.

College at Brockport President John R. Halstead, PhD., says the appointment of Andriatch to the position of VP for Advancement makes great sense, “As a Brockport alumnus and long-time alumni and development person, Mike knows our college’s culture and our various stake-

holders well. He will be a trusted advance-ment leader and assure great continuity in fund-raising.”

The “Bee Awesome” Team takes charge at Robotics Tournament

On Saturday, December 13, nine mem-bers of the Byron-Bergen High School Robotics Team, under the direction of technology teacher Rich Walker, traveled to St. John Fisher College for the Empire NY FTC Finger Lakes Qualifying Tourna-ment. With them was the robot they had constructed and programmed, named “Bee Awesome.”

By the end of the competition, the By-ron-Bergen team - Josh Bush, Ben Cha-back, Clare Fraser, Matt Hilbert, Dan Jensen, Nick Kelly, Nate McCarthy, Celia Mercovich, and Josh Phelps - had domi-nated the games and qualified for the Em-pire NY Regional FTC Championship at Pace University in Pleasantville, NY on Sunday, February 8, 2015.

The “Bee Awesome” team was one of 23 teams competing from Western and Cen-tral New York State. The competing teams design, build, program, and drive a robot which must fit inside an 18-cubic-inch box and perform tasks to score points during a two-minute match on a 12-foot-square playing field.

Each team was paired with another, forming an alliance; they then competed in four qualifying matches against two other teams. Byron-Bergen and “Bee Awesome” was one of the four final alliances, part-nered with The Harley School and Hornell Central School District. In the semifinals, the “Bee Awesome” team competed in the second match and scored most of the alliance’s points, allowing for wins in two matches. In the finals, the “Bee Awesome” robot competed in both matches, scoring the majority of points and allowing for a clean sweep and the Alliance Champion-ship.

The Byron-Bergen High School Robot-ics Team is sponsored by Liberty Pumps of Bergen. The team plans to participate in the upcoming annual “Tech Wars” at Gen-esee Community College. US FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was founded by Dean Kamen, the inventor of the Segway. The FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) is one of four programs of FIRST.

Brockport student talent on display at special Hill School dance performances

Talented young dancers from Brockport’s Fred W. Hill School worked hard for ten weeks, learning proper warm-up technique, jazz movements, stage language and chore-ography. The 12 fifth graders worked closely with mentor and graduate student Briana Kelly, along with her advisor Professor Juanita Suarez, the director of The College at Brockport’s Dance Department and In-terdisciplinary Arts for Children Program. The training culminated in two special performances for classmates, parents and the community on Dec. 1 at the Hill School Cafetorium.

The Academically Talented Program at Hill School partners with The College at Brockport and The Arts for Children In-terdisciplinary Program, as well as with a wide variety of other community mentors. It offers advanced students the opportunity for enriched experiences in many fields, beyond the usual coursework. Students qualify for the program through their

interest and their ability to keep up with any work missed during class time. Most qualified students are already performing well academically in all subject areas.

“During the upcoming spring semester, we will have 22 fourth-grade students who will be working with a Brockport College dance class at Hartwell Hall,” says Hill School Enrichment Specialist Archer Noble. “We are hoping to be able to offer opportuni-ties like these each school year.”

The Academically Talented Program is always looking for mentors with special-ized skill sets. Currently there are mentors involved with wood working, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, dance, mineralogy/lapidary, robotics and music theory/composition. People interested in becoming a mentor can contact Archer Noble at [email protected] or by phone 637-1844.

Twenty-five Churchville-Chili High School students have been named to the Urban League of Rochester’s Salute to Black Scholars Early Recognition Pro-gram. The program honors and supports students who have high academic abili-ties, and who maintain a “B” average or better throughout high school.

The students are: •12th Grade: Bassasatu Andrews, Myles Blas, Alan Claboine, Myles Forsett, Alix-andra Gist, Milladge Griffin, Christina Johnson, Isaiah Lewis, Aresia Neal and Brenndon Ruffin.•11th Grade: Javiaire Barr, Olivia Boat-wright, LaMont Haywood, Amber John-son, Olivia Lewis, Alyssa Vargas and Zach-ary Vaughn.•10th Grade: Amanda Addis, MiKayla Ad-

dis, Lauryn Bundy, DeVonte Doster, Ari-eona Ellis, Isaiah Moore, William Powell and LeVell Smith.

Students will have access to college and career workshops, plus referrals to tutor-ing, SAT preparation services and pre-col-lege programs. They also receive informa-tion on available scholarships and support on scholarship and admissions applica-tions.

The goal of the Urban League’s Early Recognition Program is to increase the number of African American students from the greater Rochester area who graduate from high school with high grades and sound college preparation by giving them the encouragement and support they need to continue to excel.

Churchville-Chili seniors sign college athletic plansTwo C-C Saints athletes have signed let-

ters of intent - one for Le Moyne Univer-sity men’s lacrosse and the other for Seton Hill University women’s softball teams. Churchville-Chili seniors Leighann Pettis and Ryan Cosgrove will play for these Di-vision II universities.

Pitcher Leighann Pettis is a three-year All-County selection: First Team in 2013 and All-Greater Rochester in 2014. She led the Saints women’s softball team to #3

seed in both 2013 and 2014 AA Section-als, with over 20 wins and more than 100 strikeouts per year. She threw a perfect game against East Irondequoit in 2014, and was named “Athlete of the Week by the Rochester daily newspaper. Pettis is a career .400 hitter with exceptional field-ing skills. She will be heading to Greens-burg, Pennsylvania to play with the Seton Hill University Griffins. Pete Reynolds, Churchville-Chili varsity softball coach,

says, “What sets Leighann apart is her de-termination. When she decides she wants to do something, she does whatever she needs to do to get it done.”

With 143 career points, Ryan Cosgrove is already the fifth all-time scorer in C-C lacrosse history, with another season yet to be added. In his three-year varsity ca-reer, he has 76 goals and 67 assists; 31 as-sists in the 2014 season alone - a school record. As a sophomore in 2013, Cosgrove

was the lacrosse team co-leader in goals with 28. He was the team leader in points with 48 and assists with 20. He also was a First Team All-County selection in Divi-sion 3 and made the All Section V All-Star First Team. A well-rounded athlete, Cos-grove also plays hockey for the Saints, and holds the school record for career points scored. He will be joining the Le Moyne University Dolphins in Syracuse next fall.

Byron-Bergen Elementary School students challenged to read 20,000 books

Last year, Byron-Bergen students pledged to read 10,000 books by the end of the school year. They exceeded that goal by 8,000 books. This year, the reading bar has been raised to 20,000 books, and the challenge kicked off with a school-wide Celebration of Reading assembly on December 5.

“This is our opportunity to get these bright young peo-ple ‘stuck on reading,’” says Principal Brian Meister. “We make it fun with events like this. Last year, Assistant Principal Amanda Cook and I took pies in the face when our kids reached the goal. They remember that; it’s moti-vation. It makes them want to read more.”

The highlight of this year’s assembly was “Read a Book”—a video shot and produced by teacher Ken Rogoys-ki. Featuring music with lyrics written by fifth-grade ELA teacher Erin Varley, arranged and played by music teach-er Bob Lancia, and sung by parent Alyson Tardy (based on Taylor Swift’s song “Shake It Off”) the video was a show-case for the talents of Byron-Bergen Elementary School readers from all grade levels.

The presentation featured an interactive game of Name that Book, with students proving their familiarity with a number of classic books. That was followed with a read-ing of “Stuck” by Oliver Jeffers, about an impossible tree where everything thrown into it gets stuck. The story was acted out to everyone’s delight by Rogoyski and Meister (as the tree).

The assembly also provided a stage to honor Byron-Ber-gen athletes who traveled to the 2014 Empire State Games for the Physically Challenged: Emily Zastrow, Emily Yun, Rito Vanegas, Lilliana Vanegas, Camryn Brookhart, Rob-ert Gaylord, Zechariah Merrell, Lilly Liles, Draven Liles, Jonathan Klafehn. The group showed off their medals and shared a video of their experiences at the Games.

The school plans a number of reading events and mile-stone rewards throughout the year to keep motivation high. “This year Mrs. Cook and I will be on the line for a full day of wearing suits designed by the kids and made of duct tape, along with possibly being stuck to a wall, when our readers succeed. Which they will,” says Meister. “Our kids are awesome.”

Blue Devils advance in basketballby Warren Kozireski

Senior Jake Burgio registered a double-double and sophomore Antonio Alvarez led his team with 16 points as Brockport defeated Spencerport 54-34 to advance to the championship game of the 16th annual Doug Westcott Memorial boys basketball tournament.

Spencerport jumped out to an early lead on a three-pointer by sophomore Ryan Gentile, a lay-up from junior Zekiah Ow-ens and a pair of field goals by junior John Feeney, but the Blue Devils began to take over the contest with a 14-0 run beginning in the final minute of the first quarter.

Alvarez netted six of those points, which also included a Ja’Quan McGill runner and three-pointer plus a pair of free throws from Burgio.

The Blue Devils defense held the Rang-

ers to just five points in the second quarter as they built a 31-15 halftime advantage.

Burgio scored half of his game total 12 points in the third quarter to help Brock-port build a 23 point lead.

Spencerport again found some offense over the final eight minutes on consecutive baskets by Gentile, Owens, David DeBellis and Corey Lawhorn, but it proved to be too late.

Gentile and Feeney led the Rangers with eight points each with Feeney adding ten rebounds. Owens finished with seven points and four rebounds.

Burgio’s double-double was a 12 point, ten rebound effort for Brockport. Alvarez had a game-high 16 points with eight re-bounds and three steals while McGill had 12 points, six rebounds and four assists to help the Blue Devils earn their third win of the season.

Brockport Blue Devils - Hilton Cadets tieby Warren Kozireski

Hilton twice overcame one-goal defi-cits with Jake Palumbo netting the tying goal with less than two minutes remain-ing in the second period as the Cadets and Brockport skated to a 3-3 tie in high school hockey.

“We have the potential to be really good, but we’re playing too inconsistent to be a factor,” Hilton head coach Chris Monfiletto said. “If we start taking care of the little things, we could be factor in Section V.”

Palumbo gave Hilton a 1-0 lead at 9:13 of the first period when he pounded home a perfect pass from behind the net by Jus-tin Allen. Todd Higgins also assisted on the play.

Brockport tied the game 1-1 in the sec-ond period to begin a five goal outburst by both teams. Mitchell Henshaw’s point shot found the back of the net for his team leading sixth goal of the season with as-sists from Dylan Sharpe and Matt Roe on the power play tally.

The Blue Devils took their first lead of the contest just 36 seconds later as Alex Harley converted a three-on-two break on a tap-in off a Sharpe shot. Defenseman Chevy Ioannone also assisted.

Hilton tied it 2-2 at 5:29 of the second as Sam Sedia scored his first goal as a Ca-det off passes from Hunter and Brenden Howell.

On the next shift, Brockport again took a one-goal lead as Sharpe knocked in the rebound of a Henshaw shot 18 seconds later.

But, at 13:34 of the second period, Mitch Palumbo won an offensive zone draw back to the right point. Higgins’ shot was stopped, but Jake Palumbo scored on the rebound for his team-high eighth goal and 17th point.

Both teams combined for 20 shots over the final period plus overtime, but Brock-port goaltender Riley Emmerson and Hil-ton’s Patrick Dennehy each preserved the point.

“We’re there,” Brockport assistant coach Alan Barton said. “We’re still learning as a team, so I think we can surprise some teams later on.”

Hilton entered the final week in Decem-ber with a 4-2-1 record and in fifth place in Division II while the Blue Devils were 1-5-1 with a win over Aquinas in the sea-son opener.
