ESWC 2012

• 9th edition, major venue for academic and application-oriented research on semantic technologies

• Multiple research tracks (including special tracks DL and eGov), one in-use track, event tracks, co-located events (OWLED, AI Challenge), 6 + 1 keynotes

• Acceptance rate: 25%

• Workshop proceedings by Springer (post-conference)

Analysis

• Slightly decreasing number of submissions (212) and registrations (236 + 20%) than 2011– But broader variety of topics (supported by tracks)

• Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning, Digital Libraries– Community is expanding, how could we attract it to the ESWC?

• Community building: broad coverage of the community through the selection of chairs, and involving major labs (Location)

• Finding industrial sponsors has become more challenging

• Positive: paper quality, keynotes, collaboration with youvivo

• 2nd edition, organized under the umbrella of PlanetData, teaches fundamentals of semantic technologies

• Mixture of tutorials, hands-on exercises and student projects, 6 keynotes

• Acceptance rate: 98%

Analysis

• Around 38 submissions received, 24 students present– 30% of the accepted students did not complete the registration process

• Travel grants?• Different registration model?

• Changes recommended for 2013– Keep existing location– Organize school later in the year– Add special topics, for 2013 Big Data analytics methods and tools– Liaise with major labs to attract students– Fewer keynotes to allow for more time for hands-on exercises

• Positive: Coherent program, motivated tutor team, location
