Stefano Cagol, “ W “ neon installatie @ M HKA, Antwerpen 2 december, 2009 - 14 januari, 2010 [ finissage: DO 14 january, 18-21u, M HKAFE ] De installatie maakt deel uit van error #14 INTO THE LIGHT 09 Into the Light als tegengewicht voor de nood aan licht in de korte en donkere dagen van het jaar. Deze tweede editie (2-12 december, 2009) is een internationaal tentoonstellingsproject met video- en lichtinstallaties in de openbare ruimte op het Zuid in Antwerpen, een project van het nomadisch initatief ERROR ONE. [email protected] www.errorOne.be Stefano Cagol (IT), “ W “, 2009 De fasen van het licht worden gekenmerkt door een symbolische centrale W, de unieke, geometrisch symmetrische letter van deze sequentie. Precies 40 jaar nadat Bruce Nauman zijn Raw/War” neon concipieerde (en net de video “Lip Sync” in 1969 realiseerde), herinnert “ W” aan het zelfde palindroomwoord, maar met nieuwe interpretaties. Er was de Oorlog in Vietnam, maar Nauman verklaarde dat het werk niet specifiek en politiek verbonden was met “deze” oorlog, hij verkoos de taalmanipulatie van de drie letters van “ war”, verlicht van de ene kant en dan van de andere kant om verschillende woorden te schrijven. Met “W” wordt niet direct verwezen naar een oorlog. Wij kunnen de naamwoorden raw war ook lezen als: zuiver conflict, conflict (oorlog/war) als fundamenteel (ruw/raw) element van het leven. Tot slot staat het conflict niet los van ons leven. Dit betekent niet alleen dat wij na 40 jaar nog steeds het zelfde of zelfs een hoger aantal oorlogen in de wereld hebben, maar dat het conflict ook op elk ogenblik bestaat: op het werk, in onze auto, in elke familie en elke gemeenschap, zowel nationaal als cultureel… in het kunstsysteem. In feite betekenen de termen oorlog en conflict - etymologisch - confrontatie, zonder een specifieke negatieve connotatie. Stefano Cagol plaatst woorden voor de toeschouwers en de voorbijgangers. Deze slogans hebben tegelijk een open en een herkenbaar karakter, en positieve zowel als negatieve betekenissen, zonder ooit a priori een interpretatie vast te leggen. Exactly 40 years from when Bruce Nauman conceived his “Raw/War” neon (just realizing the mirrored video “Lip Sync” in 1969), “W” recalls the same palindrome word, but opening to new interpretations. There was the Vietnam War, but Nauman declared that the work was not specifically and politically connected with “this” war, preferring the language manipulation of the three letters of “war” illuminated from one side and then from the other side to write different words. “W” is not referred to a war in particular, too. We can read attribute and following noun as raw war: pure conflict, conflict (war) as basic (raw) element of living. Finally conflict is indivisibly part of our life. This means not only that after 40 years we have the same or even higher number of wars in the world, but that conflict is also in every moment: at work, driving our car, in every family and every community, both national and cultural… in the art system. In fact the terms war and conflict mean – etymologically – confrontation, without a specific negative connotation. Stefano Cagol poses words in front of spectators and city passers-by, as slogans that he opens to wide and familiar, positive and negative meanings, without closing in an a priori interpretation.
