Aloha, Shu Qin!By Kathy Oyadomari

March 29 Shu Qin Lei retired with 33 years of dedicated service at the OHANA Waikiki East by Outrigger®. Scott Dalecio and Niel Mason expressed their appreciation to Shu Qin on behalf of Outrigger Hotels and Resorts. Shu Qin is looking forward to traveling to China and Australia and will help her sister care for Shu Qin’s granddaughter. She will also keep busy tending to her vegetable and flower garden, shopping in Chinatown and playing mahjong and enjoying dim sum with close friends. As well as Outrigger Resorts, the Outrigger-managed OHANA® Hotels by Outrigger®, Embassy Suites by Hilton™-Waikiki Beach Walk®, Hawaii Vacation Condos by Outrigger® and Holiday Inn Resort® Waikiki Beachcomber in Hawai‘i were represented. Guests included key wholesalers and product managers, specialist travel agents, professional conference organisers, tourism industry partners, airline representatives and travel media. Outrigger Resorts communicated with almost 400 travel industry professionals during the weeklong road show. The 2017 event launched in Brisbane at Blackbird, Eagle Street Pier followed by events at Rivers Edge Function Centre at the World Trade Centre in Melbourne and Establishment 1 & 3, George Street Sydney. In his welcome address at the events, Paul Richardson flagged the likely re-entry of Outrigger into Australia as part of a broad global expansion under new owners KSL Capital Partners. He said Australia was at the top of KSL’s list of destinations in which it was seeking management contracts or asset purchases for future operating capacity. “It could happen anytime over the next 10 years,” said Paul. He also said that beyond Australia, KSL had plans to boost its profile to Southern Florida, Southern California, Mexico and Hawai‘i.

#teamOutrigger SPAM® lovers wantedBy Kathy Foley

The 15th annual Waikīkī SPAM JAM® Festival is fast approaching. Taking over Kalākaua Avenue April 29 from 4 to 10 p.m., the festival attracts thousands with an affinity for the iconic SPAM® Brand.

Last year over 28,000 local residents and visitors descended on Waikīkī to celebrate one of Hawai‘i’s favorite foods, SPAM®

Outrigger Resorts’ popular photo booth shares in the festival’s 15th anniversary celebration this year with a canoe made entirely of SPAM® Brand cans. You know this will be a spicy attraction, so we’ll need #teamOutrigger volunteers to help take photos and for crowd control. In addition to the SPAM® canoe, there will be an arch made out of SPAM® Brand cans by Reid Mizue of OMIZU Architecture Inc., along with SC Pacific, for a vow renewal ceremony. SIX volunteers are needed to help with the construction from 11 a.m. for about three hours. FOUR to SIX volunteers are also needed at the conclusion of the festival (10 p.m.) to take down the cans and help move them to storage. A UK couple getting married at the SPAM® Museum in Minnesota will be honeymooning in Waikīkī at the SPAM JAM® Festival. Luana Maitland, events and activities manager, is helping to coordinate the vow renewal ceremony. FOUR volunteers are needed for two shifts of photo taking and crowd control for both the canoe and arch.
