The term Stylus is used to describe a myriad of different devices used in

computing, science, medicine, art and technology. In ancient times, a stylus

was the bone or ivory pen used to write on wax or clay tablets. Stylus is

also the Greek word for pillar, denoting strength and grace.

stylusThe Strategic Plan 2012 – 2016*

The new Strategic Plan 2012-2016, pursues “Excellence in All Things”.

The College will provide students with a culture of high expectations driven by best effort from

everyone – from students, teachers, parents, the Board and Parish.

A focus on programs for students with a high intellectual potential, will enrich the educational

practices of differentiation and innovation.

Students will experience an education with a moral purpose. As Global citizens, they will work

together and alone to make a difference – to make the world better by their presence, thoughts

and actions.

Students will have faith in God and in themselves because they learn in a culture of confidence and

trust, that upholds the dignity and worth of every person.

Strong and effective operations will ensure a safe and secure environment where students learn in

functional and conducive buildings and facilities with optimum access to up to date technologies.

The Seven Goals of the Strategic Plan 2012 – 2016

Extract from speech at K-12 Academic & Leadership Assembly

When students first join the St Spyridon college family, we

tell them that here they will experience some of the

best days of their lives. What we had not expected when

we first started saying this, was that they would create

some of the best days in our lives. We share a few of

these experiences with you in this Stylus.

Though as educators we initiated many of the activities

featured, we ourselves are surprised by our students’ whole-

hearted and enthusiastic response to them. It is as if they

take every experience-be it in academic endeavour, sports,

the arts, community action or global connections - and

transform it in ways we had not anticipated, at the same

time exceeding our expectations and theirs.

As Australia commemorates 100 years of Anzac, we are

moved to see the sincerity and sensitivity with which our

students respond to the stories of those men and women

whose sacrifices gave our nation its distinct identity.

In a completely different setting, we are uplifted by the

sheer exuberance of the 120 students in the production of

“Over the Rainbow”, written and directed by Mrs. L. McCoy.

We thank Dr Nicholas Pappas for his presentation of the

6th Appreciating Culture Lecture -“Sports as culture: Does it

qualify?” We commend the young artists and their teachers

for this year’s outstanding arts exhibition.

We hope that our readers enjoy sharing in some of our

school’s dynamic pursuit of excellence in all things.

Lest we forget

Anzac Day, is officially celebrated on the 25th April, provides us with the opportunity to:-

• Reflect on the cost of freedom• To honour and respect the soldiers who fought bravely, and• Acknowledge the values that define our Australian identity.

This year being the 100 Year Anniversary of the Gallipoli Campaign, student leaders attended many commemorative events.

On Sunday, 19th April, Ms Kokinelis, Dean of Middle School and SRC’s from Years 8, 9, 10 and 11 represented the school at a March and Remembrance ceremony organised by Maroubra RSL–sub branch.

At the Dawn Service at Maroubra on Saturday, 25th April, 2015 Ms Kokinelis, Ms Kalithrakas and Prefects attended and laid a wreath.

Following this event we received an email from a member of the public who attended the Maroubra RSL Anzac Day Dawn service and felt compelled to congratulate our school on the way our Prefects conducted themselves.

I am a 79 year old retiree and I live at Maroubra. I attended the Anzac Day Memorial Service at Maroubra Junction and was very impressed with the conduct of your students. The two that placed the Wreath and the School Captain that read the poem were splendid. I was standing just near the group (near the Field Gun) and they were quiet and reverent the whole time.

They all brought credit to your School and to those that teach and train them, well done.

Regards, Warren Buchanan.

The Anzac Memorial in Hyde Park, on Wednesday 23rd April, Mrs Gambriell and Year 11 Modern History students attended the RSL and Schools Remember ANZAC Commemoration Service

Dr V. Hickie, Curriculum Leader English and History, organised the whole school special Anzac Day assembly. Year 10 students read excerpts from letters, war accounts and poems written by soldiers.

Mrs A.Katsogiannis Principal Senior School

At St Spyridon Church - with reverence our student leaders commemorated the Anzacs at a moving service conducted by the Very Reverend Father Steven on the 26th April. The sacrifice of those who served will live on as long as we remember them. Lest we forget.

After our special school ANZAC DAY assembly the SRC’s sold specially packaged Anzac Cookies. Biscuits such as these were sent to the original soldiers who were away at war, as a treat and reminder of home. Altogether over $300 was raised. The proceeds were donated to Legacy on behalf of the school. Well done to all SRC’s who made and donated cookies and to all who purchased them.

Respect And Understanding Program (RUA)

STYLUS Page 4

Excellence and Leadership

Year 9 students represented our school at the annual Respect, Understanding and Acceptance (RUA) Schools Harmony program which is designed to bring together Year 9 students from a broad range of Government and Independent schools and from a variety of cultures and faiths e.g. Jewish, Greek Orthodox, Anglican, Muslim and Catholic.

The focus of this day centres on the Australian values of inclusion, fairness and respect for all. The program explores the participants’ shared identity as young Australians. It also addresses cultural and religious differences with a strong emphasis on understanding others to combat racism. It is hoped that by raising awareness we may move closer towards creating a more cohesive society.

The project works by fostering relationships between students from diverse communities. On the day students came together and engaged in sessions designed to enable them to explore their commonalities and differences, explore the impact of racism and interact in a positive way through discussion and cultural activities.

The key achievement of the RUA program is the enthusiastic response from all the participating students.

Ms G. Kokinelis Dean of Middle School

Harmony Day At St Spyridon Junior School

Harmony Day is held every year in Australia. This year is special because it’s Harmony Day’s 15th anniversary. Harmony Day always coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The message of Harmony Day is everyone belongs. It’s a day to celebrate Aus-tralia’s diversity – a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home. After all, it is important to respect and understand one another.

Year 6 hosted the event for St Spyridon College Junior School. Students wore orange and there was a range of fun activi-ties available, including Year 6 sharing stories from varied cultures. The day was a huge success! Thank you to the staff and parents for getting involved and congratulations to Year 6 students for their leadership on Harmony Day.

In April the Hon. Matt Thistlethwaite, Member for Kingsford-Smith presented Student Leaders K-12 with an Award of recognition. He congratulated them for their efforts and good example and praised St Spyridon College for cultivating future leaders.

The College Captain, Christos Raptis, gave the vote of thanks at the close of the presentation.

Today, on behalf of the whole school community, I would like to thank Mr Thistlethwaite for being a great and loyal friend to the College.

Over recent years, you have been an important member of our school community and for that, we are for-ever thankful. Your strong allegiance to the school was evident when you took time out of your busy schedule and marched with our school on arguably one of the most important days in the Greek Orthodox calendar, the dual celebration of the 25th of March. We as students take note of this, and again we thank you.

Observing political figures like yourself being proactive in the commuity inspires any of us young leaders to do exactly the

same. At both the Junior and Senior School, programs are in place to encourage students to take up leadership roles and

challenge those to push the barriers and stand up for what is right. Our school motto translates to “Forever Excelling” and as student leaders; we try to live by this and strive the best we can for the school. One of our student principles state “We contribute to the life of our Church and community, and exercise our responsibilities as citizens of a Democratic nation, always obeying the rule of law.” I believe this is not only what our student leaders should abide by, but also every student of this College. This can only be done through the inspiration of our families, teachers and political figures such as yourself in the community.

On behalf of the whole school community I would like to thank you once more Mr Thistlethwaite for

being a part of the St Spyridon family and we hope that your association with the College lasts for many years to come.

Time has come around once again, where eight courageous Junior School students hop into the cars of our very generous parent chauffeurs and scoot off to schools all around Sydney to debate some tricky and controversial topics.

On Friday 8th May, eight Year 6 students, drove to The Kings School to debate the topic ‘That television is the enemy of family life’.

The affirmative team (consisting of Juval Mikhail, James Valmas, Teoni Antonopoulos and James Bletsas) argued that television is destroying family life as it anti-social, addictive, can cause long term damage to the brain activity of children and is often used as a babysitting tool by neglectful parents.

The negative team (including Katherine Fragias, Anneta Ma-roulis, Gianni Keramtizis and Madelyn Perdikakis) worked very hard to persuade their audience and adjudicator that television is an ally, not an enemy. They discussed the idea that televi-sion doesn’t have to be a brain-numbing pass time, yet can be a tool for educational research, a means for physical exercise and a way to inform the masses about crucial events and in-formation. Their opposition, argued convincingly, yet were no match for our negative team!

Congratulations to both teams, your efforts were sensational!

In May, the Year 12 Legal Studies class together with their teacher, were given the opportunity to participate in the Supreme Court’s initiative for Law Week. As part of Law Week the Court hosted its first interactive Legal Studies Students and Teachers Seminar to provide an opportunity for Legal Studies students to hear from, and ask questions of, Supreme Court judges.

The seminar was chaired by the Honourable T. F. Bathurst AC, Chief Justice of New South Wales and comprised of two presentations on the following topics:

Judging: How the law is responding to social media. Sentencing: How to accommodate competing objectives.

The Year 12 students were thrilled to be given the opportunity to interact with the judiciary and look forward to discussing the topics raised in the context of their classroom.

Congratulations to all the students who challenged them-selves and participated in our recent Athletics Carnival. I was impressed with the enthusiasm and ‘can do’ attitude of the students who wanted to do it not only to beat their personal best but to support their House. Seven records were broken. Well done to the Delphians who won the carnival this year!

My thanks are extended to all the parents who assisted on the day and those who cheered from the stands. Mrs Bourdaniotis and her amazing P & F once again kept us well fed and

hydrated. Thank you also to Mr Volas and Mr Dookie, your planning, meticulous attention to detail and efficient record keeping ensured the day ran smoothly. Thank you to the staff for looking after the children and for providing wonderful outdoor activities for them to enjoy.

Community ActionFood And Native Garden Grant

We are excited to inform you that St Spyridon College has been successful in receiving $2,500 funding through Randwick City Council’s ‘Food and Native Garden’ grant program.

We commend Miss Bletsogiannis, Curriculum Coordinator, for preparing the successful application.

All grant recipients were announced and presented with their cheque at a celebratory gathering at Randwick Com-munity Centre on Wednesday 29 April, at the Principals and Head Teachers meeting with the Mayor of Randwick, Cr Ted Seng.

The Council’s ‘Food and Na-tive Garden’ grant program aims to support local schools with grant funding to es-tablish food gardens and/or native gardens in their grounds. The program additionally aims to support students’ learning experiences in the areas of food growing, healthy food options and native plant identification, with the purpose of bringing

hands-on learning beyond the classroom and across the entire school curriculum.

Thanks to the initiative and vision of students such as our Junior School Captain, Billy Bourdaniotis, who proposed the

idea of a food garden in our school grounds, combined with the support and con-tribution of Randwick City Council, our food garden dreams are sprouting!

The proposed site for the food garden is an unused area in the Junior School, located between the canteen and the Year 2 classrooms.

We envision a food garden divided into 3 conjoined areas, with areas for outdoor learning, the growing of fruit

and vegetables, and an area for herbs.

We congratulate MRS CHRISTINA TSACONAS who was recognized for her outstanding commitment to the Parish and College for over 30 years, by the Parish Board of Directors. Christina commenced as a volunteer secretary to the pioneer Principal of St Spyridon College, the late Mary Hamer, in 1983 and soon after was employed full-time as administrator of the Parish and College. In 1987, together with the Parish President and Committee, she established the Parish Administration Office. She was appointed as Parish Executive Officer (PEO) and Bursar to the College in 1990. In this capacity she has ensured that State and Federal government grants for the College are maximised. She has maintained the Parish budget securely and assisted every member of staff. During her years of service Christina has contributed significantly to the planning and completion of all College building programs, including the Junior School building in 2001, the Technology Wing in 2004, and most recently the Sports and Performing Arts centre (SPACe) in 2010. Known affectionately as “Christina” by the students and parents, her warmth and loving disposition make a favourite leader

of the Parish Trip to Greece, which she also coordinates with all stakeholders. She was recognised by His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos, at the Clergy-Laity Conference hosted by our Parish in 2003, and by the Rotary Club of Burwood with the Pride of Workmanship Award in 2013. In 2008, His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos presented Christina with a commemorative plaque for her services, on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the Parish and the 25th Anniversary of the College. She is a respected member of the Bursars’ Association of the Association of Independent Schools (AISNSW).

We also congratulate MR SAVVAS SCOUTAS, father of our Parish Priest and chanter of St Spyridon Church for 38 years. The gold medallion of St Spyridon was accepted by his grandson, Mr Sam Savva Scoutas (son of our Parish Priest and St Spyridon student HSC Class of 2000), who movingly thanked the Parish for the honour bestowed on his grandfather.

MRS EMILY GINIS and MRS MARITSA KELLY were recognized for over many years dedicated service on the Philoptochos Ladies’ Auxiliary. We congratulate them all.

Year 11 Drama Production

The Year 11 Drama class performed their version of William Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream.’

As part of the preliminary Drama course, students must study the Elements of Production in Performance. This means they learn not only about what happens on stage during a performance, but also what goes on behind the scenes. For this production, the Year 11 students explored and took on the roles of costume designer, set designer, lighting and sound designer and publicity designer, as well as rehearsing and staging the script.

The Year 11 students also worked together to come up with their own Directorial Concept for this production. They looked at the idea of manipulation present in the play, and decided to set their production in child’s bedroom, highlighting the ways in

which children manipulate their toys through imaginative play.

The performance was a great success, with the students performing Shakespeare’s original dialogue effortlessly to over 30 audience members in the Drama Studio. The performance was also followed by an engaging Q&A session with the cast, allowing the students to provide more insight into their concept and the development of their production.

Congratulations to the Year 11 Drama students on their hard work and outstanding performance. A very special thank you to all the parents, teachers and friends who came along to support the students.

Where are they now?

Girls sport has grown each year with over 100 girls participating in ISA sport. Gradually over the years Ms O’Shea has built the profile of sport by providing coaching courses to our staff members and hiring external coaches. We have been incredibly fortunate to have a number of alumni providing their time each Wednesday and Saturday to coach the girls. This has been very successful and beneficial for the girls playing Netball or Girls Football within the school and is proving to be a rewarding experience for the past students coaching. These young women have extensive experience within their sport and possess the ability to further develop each team to their

potential. Furthermore, the girls participating in ISA sport are developing connections with their coaches as they can sense that they really do have invested interest in their team’s success.

In Stylus 16 we featured Angelina Flokis, Deanne Constantinou, Erin Criticos and Demi Flokis. We are pleased to feature more past students who are enlivening girl’s sports.

Military High Officials’ Visit

On the occasion of the visit of Lieutenant General Georgios Paraschopoulos and Colonel Vasileios Broumas of the Hellenic armed forces to this year’s commemoration of the 74th anniversary of the Battle of Crete.

“This battle which saw the unification of British, Greek, Australian and New Zealand troops was one of many in the Mediterranean during WW2 and brought just over 23,000 allied casualties, all fighting for the same purpose, democracy and equality. The battle showcased courage, strength and determination and laid the platform for the jobs you carry out today, and we thank you for it. Men and women like you in Greece as well as across the globe face the difficult task of defending their nation and the morals we live by today.

The majority of us being Australian born but of Greek heritage means that we take great pride in our heritage and history. We also praise the efforts of not only our Australian troops fighting today, but our Greek troops who are faced with the difficult task of defending the nation of such a complex region. We as a school learn a lot from the principles that the Greek troops lived and continue to live by today. Qualities such as trust, loyalty and respect are embedded within our schools principles and we look up to our armed forces and learn from them. One quality in particular is the pride in our uniform. We learn from soldiers such as you that the uniform we wear day in day out is a representation of who we are, and what we believe in. For you, it is a representation of the nation and its people, and for us as students, it is a repre-sentation of our school and the morals and ethics we live by. This sense of pride is inspired by not only our families and teachers, but also our armed forces such as you.

On behalf of the whole student body, I’d like to say thank you for all that you do for us in defending the nation in which many of us hold close to our hearts and we wish you the very best on you return to Greece.”
