Besides sacramental liturgy and sacramentals, catechesis must take into account the forms of piety and
popular devotions among the faithful. The religious sense of the Christian people has always found
expression in various forms of piety surrounding the Church's sacramental life, such as the veneration of
relics, visits to sanctuaries, pilgrimages, processions, the stations of the cross, religious dances, the rosary,
medals, etc. (CCC, #1674).
IMAGES: Religious images in a church include illustrations, paintings, pictures, sculptures, or statues.
Artistic representations of Jesus, his Mother of Mary, angels and saints are provided for the purpose of
praying, honouring, instruction, or decorating.
“In the earthly Liturgy, the Church participates, by a foretaste, in that heavenly Liturgy which is celebrated
in the holy city of Jerusalem, toward which she journeys as a pilgrim, and where Christ is seated at the right
hand of God; and by venerating the memory of the Saints, she hopes one day to have some share and
fellowship with them. Thus, in sacred buildings images of the Lord, of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and of the
Saints, in accordance with most ancient tradition of the Church, should
be displayed for veneration by the faithful and should be so arranged so
as to lead the faithful toward the mysteries of faith celebrated there. Care
should, therefore, be taken that their number not be increased
indiscriminately and moreover that they be arranged in proper order so
as not to draw the attention of the faithful to themselves and away from
the celebration itself. There should usually be only one image of any given
Saint. Generally speaking, in the ornamentation and arrangement of a
church, as far as images are concerned, provision should be made for the
devotion of the entire community as well
as for the beauty and dignity of the
images” (GIRM, # 318).
STAINED GLASS WINDOWS: Windows filled with colour pieces of
glass are found in churches, buildings, and homes. This form of art has been
popular in churches for centuries. In addition to colourful designs, somehow
pictures of Jesus, saints, or important religious events from scripture. The
shinning sun brightens the many colours and helps make God’s house look
special, beautiful, and meaningful. Several cathedrals (the bishop’s church
in a diocese) around the world have become famous because of their
architectural design and use of stained-glass.
STATIONS OF THE CROSS: The Stations of the Cross is a devotion
in which we meditate upon the Passion and Death of Jesus Christ. In the
Stations, we focus on the fact that Jesus freely suffered and died out of
infinite love for us and for all of mankind. We remember with gratitude
that it is through His complete offering of Himself to the Father that it
becomes possible for us to enter into the unending joy of heaven. Finally,
while the Stations are a meditation on our Lord’s Passion and Death, we
remember that death does not have the final word, but rather that it leads
to Resurrection – His and our own.
