Sacramental Life Enrichment at St Ignatius In today’s first reading Isaiah has God declaring: “I formed you, and set youas a covenant of the people,a light for the nations,to open the eyes of the blind…” One of the hopes for the parish in its discernment about its future is for the development of sacramental programs that bear witness to the Body of Christ here in Rogers Park – Edgewater. We are called to be light, to help people see the Good News. To this end I want to seek your help and announce a new monthly Mass. One of the key means for us as a parish to share the light is to have full and active participation in our Masses. To keep our Masses engaging I am working with the Liturgy Committee to restructure the committee so that we can organize the many liturgical ministries and actively recruit new ministers to serve. Please consider assisting in one of the liturgical ministries at our Masses. Many people think they are not worthy to serve but God calls upon us to discern where we can contribute to the life of the community. In today’s Gospel we hear God calling Jesus a beloved son. What we need to remember is that God’s belovedness of Jesus is also transferred to us. We are beloved. In our discernment process this past Fall some parishioners suggested that the parish offer the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick at Mass. Since Vatican II the church has strived to recover the beauty and power of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick by making it more readily available to the community. This weekend we are doing just that; celebrating the Anointing of the Sick at all the Masses. (see Fr. Dan’s note on Anointing on the following page) We hope to offer this anointing at all the Masses twice a year. Our need for healing though cannot always wait for these twice-yearly Anointing Masses so we also are going to pilot a 1st Saturday of the month Healing Mass. The bi-lingual Mass will be at 6:00pm with confession available at 5:00pm, one hour before Mass. Confession and Mass will be in the chapel. We will begin on Saturday, February 1 and host these 1st Saturday Masses through June. We will then review how these Masses are serving the faith community. We believe that Christ continues to heal us today and hopefully these new opportunities for anointing, reconciliation and Eucharist will bolster our ability to be Christ’s disciples. Each of us needs to hear the same words spoken to Jesus in today’s gospel: “You are my beloved”. Once we truly believe we are beloved then we determine how to share this love with others.

Enriquecimiento de la vida sacramental en San Ignacio En la primera lectura de hoy, Isaías tiene a Dios declarando: "Te formé y te puse como un pacto del pueblo, una luz para las naciones, para abrir los ojos de los ciegos ..." Una de las esperanzas de la parroquia en su discernimiento sobre su futuro es el desarrollo de programas sacramentales que den testimonio del Cuerpo de Cristo aquí en Rogers Park - Edgewater. THE SACRAMENT OF HEALING Prior to Vatican II, the Sacrament of Healing was reserved for cases of severe illness. A person typically received the sacrament at the moment of death (which is why it received the name of “Extreme Unction”). Since Vatican II, however, the church has strived to recover the beauty and power of this sacrament by making it more readily available to the community. It is no longer administered solely to people who are gravely ill. It is now offered to any member of the parish community who longs to experience the healing presence of Christ in their life. From time to time, we all seek such healing, whether on account of physical illness or some spiritual or psychological problem we are facing. Today Sunday, January 12, during the course of every mass, we will offer this sacrament to whomever desires to receive it. The sacrament will be administered after a brief homily before the offertory. People will be invited to draw near to the front, much like we do for receive communion, and will be blessed with the Oil of Anointing on one’s forehead and hands. We chose to offer this sacrament at this time in order to begin the year together on a healthy note and also to unite ourselves with Jesus who, in the gospel for this day, heard that same voice we all need to hear: “You are my beloved.”

Solemnity of the Baptism of Our Lord Today the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Baptism of Our Lord. This brings to an end the season of Christmas. The Church recalls Our Lord's second manifestation or epiphany which occurred on the occasion of His baptism in the Jordan. Jesus descended into the River to sanctify its waters and to give them the power to beget sons of God. The event takes on the importance of a second creation in which the entire Trinity intervenes. Many of the incidents which accompanied Christ's baptism are symbolical of what happened at our Baptism. At Christ's baptism the Holy Spirit descended upon Him; at our Baptism the Trinity took its abode in our soul. At His baptism Christ was proclaimed the "Beloved Son" of the Father; at our Baptism we become the adopted sons of God. At Christ's baptism the heavens were opened; at our Baptism heaven was opened to us. At His baptism Jesus prayed; after our Baptism we must pray to avoid actual sin. Source: catholicculture.org

EL SACRAMENTO DE SANACIÓN Antes del Vaticano II, el Sacramento de Sanación estaba reservado para casos de enfermedades graves. La Iglesia recuerda la segunda manifestación o epifanía de Nuestro Señor que ocurrió con motivo de Su bautismo en el Jordán. Jesús descendió al río para santificar sus aguas y darles el poder de engendrar hijos de Dios. El evento adquiere la importancia de una segunda creación en la que interviene toda la Trinidad. Muchos de los incidentes que acompañaron el bautismo de Cristo son simbólicos de lo que sucedió en nuestro bautismo. En el bautismo de Cristo, el Espíritu Santo descendió sobre Él; En nuestro Bautismo, la Trinidad se instaló en nuestra alma. En su bautismo, Cristo fue proclamado el "Hijo Amado" del Padre; en nuestro bautismo nos convertimos en hijos adoptivos de Dios. En el bautismo de Cristo se abrieron los cielos; en nuestro bautismo se nos abrió el cielo. En su bautismo, Jesús oró; después de nuestro bautismo debemos rezar para evitar el pecado real. 2019 Un año en revisión El año pasado fue un buen año para la despensa de alimentos. En enero, fue la primera vez en nuestro recuerdo que un vórtice polar barrió la ciudad con temperaturas extremas. Presentando un dilema: ¿la despensa debe estar abierta o cerrada? Después de encuestar a los voluntarios, se tomó la decisión de que la despensa permaneciera abierta. Entonces, cuando las temperaturas bajaron a - 26, nuestros voluntarios dieron la bienvenida a 8 familias a la despensa de alimentos. Las familias tenían una gran necesidad de comida y estaban extremadamente agradecidas de que estuviéramos allí para ayudar. Esperamos que el clima este año sea más templado. Damos la bienvenida a grupos de estudiantes de Sacred Heart School, St. Joseph y Loyola University. Todos los estudiantes aportaron su entusiasmo por ayudar a otros necesitados. Durante el año escolar, los estudiantes hicieron de todo, desde almacenar, clasificar, limpiar y ayudar a los clientes a comprar sus alimentos. 2019 A Year in Review This past year was a good year for the food pantry. In January, it was the first time in our recollection that a polar vortex swept the city with extreme temperatures. Presenting a dilemma – should the pantry be open or closed? After polling the volunteers, the decision was made that the pantry should stay open. So, as the temperatures dipped to – 26, our volunteers welcomed 8 families to the food pantry. The families were in dire need of food and were extremely grateful that we were there to help. We hope that the weather this year is milder. We welcomed student groups from Sacred Heart School, St. Joseph and Loyola University. All the students brought their enthusiasm for helping others in need. During the school year, the students did everything from stocking, sorting, cleaning and helping clients shop for their food. Each visit was a different experience for each group showing them multiple reasons why the food pantry and their efforts made a difference in the lives of the community. This year’s Hunger Walk was a success. We had over 80 walkers and reached our goal of $6000.00. Thank you to all who contributed to help stock our shelves and provide special holiday items. Once again, we hosted our neighbors for a traditional Thanksgiving Dinner. Over 80 diners joined us for the day. Many were seniors who would have spent the day by themselves if not for your generosity. In December, the St. Ignatius Food Pantry was featured on Channel 7 ABC news. A FEW REMINDERS: We do not have the space to accept clothing. If you have items of clothing, you would like to donate contact Care for Real at 5339 N. Sheridan Road, 773-769-6182. Do not leave food donations by in the stairwell to the chapel and Holy Name Room. We are in the pantry on Wednesday afternoons and Friday mornings. Donations may be dropped off at the rectory during normal business hours. Thank you.

Parish Counseling Service Available St. Ignatius Parish has partnered with Claret Center’s Parish Counseling Program to offer confidential, nurturing and goal-oriented support for parishioners who’ve experienced depression, anxiety, grief, trauma and other challenges. Counseling can be helpful when you: feel more sad or anxious than you want to feel, have lost a job or struggle with problems at work, have challenges with relationships, have experienced the loss of someone close, have trouble adjusting to change or transition, desire a closer relationship with your spouse or partner, want to bring a new sense of purpose and meaning to your life. Counseling services are provided at several North Side and Evanston locations by Mike McCauley, an experienced educator who’s now in the third year of Loyola University Chicago’s MA program in Pastoral Counseling. Mike’s services are available on a sliding scale, and all counseling services are provided under the supervision of a licensed psychologist and therapist. On Wednesday, January 15th School Board Meeting at 6:30 in the Primary School lunchroom, the meeting is open to all. Need help paying your NCA tuition? Tax Credit Scholarship Application begin on January 14th with Big Shoulders at 8 am and Empower Illinois on January 15th at 6:30 pm. NCA will be hosting computers & assistance for both applications. Bilingual volunteers will be available.
