After a long and diettngulahed term as itE deputy commander, Maj.Dan Fo ateriing has decided to step down

ThiE Aero sp ac 1 3 Edue ation hangar tour was in coop eratio n with the ruonthly EAA Young E agleE firE t fJ.1gbt
pro gram which iEput on by the 10cal EAA chapter #5410cated at the Lake Elm 0Airp crt (21D).
The Young EagleE program iEheld every second saturday of the ruonth froru May through october each year
ThiE event iEsp0ns ored by the pllo tE of EAA Chapter #54ua Ing their 0wn aircraft and their 0wn tim e.
The BOy SCouts tro op #4:34 had been camping out on the grounds 0tvaulters Aviation fro m Frt day m ght
('i' /10) thro ugh sunday m orning ('i' /12) . All of theE 1 3 EC uta were all pretty jaa zed up fro m their firEt flights they
rea etv ed and a day 0f avia1;10 immerEion.
'I'W 0 groupEof Boy s Couts were arrang ed by the EAA memb era to tour appro xim ately :3to 4 hangars
immedlately after the conclusi on of saturday E:firE flight.s. ThiE to ur was Eeheduled fro m 1:300 ho urs to 1400
hours. Each group had COnEsted of one adult memb er and 8 ECoute.
We had 2 Eenio r m emb erE and 2cadets 0n hand for the guided tou r. FirEt we gave each group an intro duction
on CivilAir P atro 1 ofwho we are and what it iEwe do. Next we g av 1 3 ea ch group a cl 0 E 3 up view 0 four aircraft.
Each BOy Scout had an opp 0rtun1ty to Eit in our aircraft and get a cloE1 3 up 10ok at what we fly .
Next we Eent the gro up up Etairs where our tw 0 cadet memb era had given a p era 0nal tour of the cadets area
and sh o wed a :3minute video 0n the cadet pro grams. Next they conducted a questdo n and answ er EeE si o n to
E 3 1 3 if anyone had any sp ec1:ficquestdons .
.After the up Etairs tour 0fthe cadet area we bro ught each group through the rest of the m a1 n :fioor Equad ro 0
and handed out EOue litera ture on Civil Air Pa trol and answered any rem a1n1ngquestto na. Mo EtBOy SCOUtE

Ground Team Academy (G'I'A) again at camp Ripley, near I.Jttle F alls , :M1rilleEtao G'I'A was a mo re intens 1
and:fun experience this year ov er l aat year. !fIremember the numb era correctly, there were ov er 80 students
and Etaff. We als 0 trained with :3cadetE from North Dakota. ThiE year we were going from 0'i' 00to 2100 Frtday
and saturday doIng clas sro 0m exerd EeE and simulated mis EiOnE
sunday wa Emis sio n day Igra duati on day. There were 8 total ground teams out on EOtteE sunday Momlng. F
my mis Eion, I ended up leading a 'M1EEIng P elli0nE' Eeareh through EOme v ery thick woo ds. :It had rained
hea v ily the night b efure EO[uat walklng thro ugh the woo ds made for a v ery wet groundteam. Itw as a
challenging mis Eion b ec am 1 3 of the wet condi tions, hea v y wo 0ds and the fa ct that I had the full gambit of
p era 0nne! on the team. Tw 0 0fthe cadeta were youngsr (12 or 1:3max) and this weekend was their firEt
exposure to tbiE type of work
I als 0 had a civ 1l1an from the central r.akes SAR group who iEs t.arting to learn the craft. and will 1 3v entually
m 0 v 1 3 into handling SAR do gs. W 1 3 found E 3v eral clues to the mis EIng P era on but didn't find the target. sheended up being found in another Eecto r. How e¥ er the team' Etheory on where the t.arget s entered the woo ds
by examlning the fuotprtnta and analy zing the 0ther clues was sp 0t- 0n. I sp 0ke to the target after the debrief
EeEsio n and she confirm ed that the Epot they went into the wo 0ds from the ro ad was the point where we wer
looking. s 0 that gav 1 3 EOme COnE0lation to no t finding the targ et,
W 1 3 did end up finding an expended mo rtar flare which makes for 2years in a row finding cooI clues in the
woo ds 0f camp Ripley. W 1 3 didn't dia turb the flare but there were a few pi ctures taken using cell pho ne
cam era E. On saturday night, the GTI..lGTIvU and GTM:2 Etudents had to bull d and Eleep in shelters with
what 1 3v er they carried in their 24 hour pack. I ended up making an emergency sleeptng bag from a El..UYial
bl anket, poncho and duct tap e. I learned that you can't ha v 1 3 enough duct tap 1 3 , mOEquito netting andP ara- cord in your 24br pack.
The SAR instructo r called mine go0d and I w as jus tab out to climb in when they needed a v an driv er to take
Eom e of the atudents back. I eagerly v olunt eered EOI didr1t get to me my emergency shelter. How 1 3v er E 3v era
cla EEmat es and G'I'M:2student did end up Etaying 0ut in the wo 0ds. ThunderEtornIE rolled into the area
about :3am EOev ery one packed up their Ehe! ters and went back to the b arracks as a Eafe.ty prec aution.

Exercise (UEX). This was part of a ten day exercise
built to chall enge our 1 3 quadro n and enhanc e our
training effort 1 3 in 0 rder to be come better at searc h
and re 1 3 cue (SAR) op er abiona.
The 1 3 e 10 days were full of challenge and acti vitie a .

The aircrew having no prio r know 1edge of each
po siti on, had done a great job by giving the ground
team turn by turn dir ectio ria and 1ed them strai ght
toe ach of the four targets.
Thi 13 turned out to be another great demo nsbrabi onof what Civil AITFatr 01 (CAP) is cap able of in the
search and rescue (SAR) missions when the team
pulls together and work 1 3 towards a comm on goal.
