The Kek Lok Si Temple is a Buddhist temple situated in Air Itam in Penang and is one of thebest known temples on the island. The construction of the temple began in 1893 and wasinspired by the chief monk of the Goddess of Mercy Temple at Pitt Street. With the support of the consular representative of China in Penang, the project received the sanction of theManchu Emperor Guangxu, who bestowed a tablet and gift of 70,000 volumes of the ImperialEdition of the Buddhist Sutras.

The primary benefector of the the Kek Lok Si Temple in 1906 was none other than KapitanChung Keng Quee.In 1930, the seven storey main pagoda of the temple or the Pagoda of 10,000 Buddhas, was completed. This pagoda combines a Chinese octagonal base with amiddle tier of Thai design, and a Burmese crown; reflecting the temple's embrace of bothMahayana and Theravada Buddhism.

In 2002, a 30.2m bronze statue of the Kuan Yin was completed and opened to public. Thestatue is located on the hillside above the pagoda. The rambling temple consists of manyprayer halls, pagodas, bell towers and just about every other typical temple structure you canthink of, in varying styles from Burmese to Chinese to Thai. However, two structures dominatethe scenery, especially when the temple is seen from afar. One is the seven storey pagodawhich dates from the temple's founding. The other is a huge bronze statue of the Goddess of Mercy, Kuan Yin -- a popular diety in Penang. The statue was newly completed in mid-2003but construction of various surrounding structures is still under way.

    History

The history of Kek Lok Si can be traced to the late 19th century. The founder and first Abbottof Kek Lok Si was the Venerable Beow Lean, who was born into a devout Buddhist family inFujian province in 1844. At the age of 33, he left his occupation as a businessman to devotehis life to the teachings of Buddhism. In 1885, he came to Penang with the aim of obtainingdonations for the renovation of a monastry in Fuzhou, China.

As faith would have it, the trustees of the oldest temple in Penang, the Kuan Yin Teng (Godessof Mercy Temple) in Pitt Street, offered him the position of Chief Monk-in-residence.

Page 5 of 16Impressed by the deep devotion of the Penang Chinese to Buddhism, he accepted andsettled down in Penang."A man determined can move a mountain, but a man devoted cancarve one". It was through the sheer diligence, determination and devotion of Venerable BeowLean that the Kek Lok Si temple began to take shape. With the blessing of his superiors andthe unstinting support of five local tycoons, the first phase of the temple complex, whichconsisted of a series of monasteries, prayer halls, and landscaped gardens, was built

    between 1891 and 1905.

Even in those early times, fund-raisers were experienced enough to dedicate structures andartefacts to the temple's benefactors. These five substantial benefactors became known asthe "Big Five Supporters" of the Kek Lok Si and their life-like sculptures and those of a fewother donors are kept in the upper floors of the Tower of Sacred Books, to perpetuate thememory of their generosity.Such was the renown of Kek Lok Si, it even gained the imperialsanction of the Manchu Emperor Kwang Xi who presented the temple with a set of 70,000volumes of the Imperial Edition of the Buddhist Sutras, the Emperor's hand-written scripts, and several other relics.

Well-known Empress Cixi of the Ching Dynasty also wrote and presented hand-written scriptsto the temple. The inscription in Chinese calligraphy Ta Seong Pao Dian on this plaque(picture, right) was written by His Majesty Emperor Kuang Xi of Ching Dynasty and waspresented to the First chief Abbot of Kek Lok Si in 1904.Today, these priceless heritage relicsstill exist in the temple archives. more>>

    Gurney Drive

Gurney Drive Hawker Centre , also called Pusat Penjaja Anjung Gurney , is one of thebiggest and most famous eatery in Penang. It has relocated a few times, and is presentlylocated at the northern end of Gurney Drive , just before the Gurney roundabout, between

Sunrise Tower and Gurney Plaza .

The Gurney Drive Hawker Centre has been around since the early 1970's, and is probably thebest known place for visitors to Penang to enjoy the local hawker fare. Over the years, theprice at the hawker centre has risen higher than at coffee shops elsewhere in Penang, due topopularity of the hawker centre among out-of-town visitors and general commercialisation.

Visitor Tips to Gurney Drive Hawker Centre

In all honesty, I avoid voluntarily eating at Gurney Drive Hawker Centre, as I found it to be too

commercialised and does not offer me the "authentic Penang experience". Nevertheless, itappears to be the most popular hawker centre among visitors from out of town, and I am oftenpersuaded to take visitors there.

My tips to you, if you're visitor, don't get fleeced. If you are ordered itemised dishes (i.e.pasembur or yong tau foo), make sure you find out the price of each item, otherwise it isdifficult to argue with the hawker when he names his price. When ordering per-bowl items, findout the price and order by price. For example, say, "Give me one RM3 bowl of Hokkien Mee".Don't say "Give me one large bowl of Hokkien Mee", as you and the hawker may havedifferent definition of "large".

It may be advisable to sit close to the food your are ordering, which is easier said than done,as the hawker centre often gets quite crowded. Having said that, it's a good idea to arriveearly. You will have an easier time finding parking space. Myself, I usually park at Gurney Plazaand walk from there. Although the parking at Gurney Plaza is more expensive, it saves me thehassle of finding a non-existing street parking lot.

15 Dec 2009 UpdateThere were complaints from some patrons that the hawkers are preventing them from sitting

anywhere they like. Unfortunately the intensity of business rivalry in the area has allowed thisugly behaviour to emerge. The Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP) issued a warningthat hawkers who do that risk having their trading permits suspended or revoked. I wouldadvise patrons to complain to the Penang Island Municipal Council if they were preventedfrom sitting anywhere they like. We cannot have this sort of behaviour tarnish Penang'sreputation.

    Food Available Here

It's true to say that the Gurney Drive Hawker Centre has about the widest range of hawker

Page 9 of 16In a bid to track down the island’s best nasi kandar outlets we considered three factors:whether the piquancy of the restaurant’s dishes was suitable for locals and foreigners; theprice of a meal; the ambiance of each selected restaurant. We have listed them in order of how good we thought the food was – so check them out now!

    Liyaqat Ali Nasi Kandar

Famously known as Nasi Kandar Beratur (Queue-Up Nasi Kandar), this place is for hardcorenasi kandar enthusiasts – or if you have been out clubbing late and do not mind standing inline for some of the best nasi kandar you will ever taste. They only open at 22:00, whichseems a little strange at first, but it makes sense as it is one of the few restaurants that stayopen late on the island. Locals say it is definitely worth the long wait – indeed you will haveprobably have to queue no less than 30 minutes before you can place an order. A mixture of hand-ground spices seasons the curries – think thick, creamy and flavourful, with just a hint of piquancy (for certain gravies). All this contributes to make Nasi Kandar Beratur the best

choice for Penang locals, visiting Malaysians, and foreigners.

Opening Hours : 22:00 – lateAddress : 98 Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling, Penang

Line Clear Nasi Kandar A 24-hour joint that merits the number two spot only because Line Clear Nasi Kandar’sfood tempts us with its ‘limited-time’ offerings. Line Clear is located in a narrow alleywayalong Jalan Penang, with wooden tables and chairs, slightly near open drains. Don’t letthat put you off though! In all honesty the food here is phenomenal and the fact that you

only pay RM6.50 (the cheapest in all of Penang) for a plate of rice, fried chicken, telur dadar (sunny side up omelette), vegetables and ‘kuah banjir’ (a mix of gravies), makesthe whole meal that much more satisfying. There is an impressive amount of hype abouttheir daily specials (ranging from fish curry to beef gravy) and the extensive praise isclearly warranted. Adding to the whole value-for-money aspect of Line Clear Nasi Kandar is the fact that the food served comes in generous portions.Opening Hours : 24 HoursAddress : 177 Penang Road, PenangTel : +604 261 4440

    Kassim Nasi Kandar

You will not have to wait long for the nasi kandar at this restaurant but that does not mean thefood is not excellent – on the contrary, in our humble opinion it rivals both Nasi Kandar Beratur and Line Clear Nasi Kandar. Founded and managed by locals, what makes the food herepopular is the fact that they do not skimp on the spices – which means that the dishes arealmost always fiery in taste. This makes it a popular choice with locals and if you are theadventurous sort, sample the beef in black, sweet, tangy and peppery gravy – simplyaccompanied by a plate of fluffy white rice and a side of sautéed cabbage, this is a true-blue

    Restoran Sup Hameed Nasi Kandar

If you are looking for a place that serves nasi kandar that straddles the fine line betweenfiery spiciness and rich taste, we recommend Restoran Sup Hameed Nasi Kandar. Therestaurant serves the usual nasi kandar dishes like sotong sambal (squid in spicy gravy),mutton and fish curry, and beef and chicken gravy but it is their huge selection of vegetables that has us impressed. We love the French beans sautéed in a light soysauce, fried egg, onions and garlic, steamed lady fingers and the curried mixedvegetables. But these are generally pretty spicy dishes; for those who can’t handlepeppery food we highly recommend a plate of their steamed rice drizzled with the rich,coconut-based green-grey kurma gravy, with honey chicken and crunchy cabbage andcarrots on the side.

    Restoran Hameediyah

Established in 1907, Restoran Hameediyah is one of Penang’s oldest restaurants. It used tobe a traditional mamak-style restaurant along Jalan Campbell until it expanded to newer, air-conditioned premises (called Hameediyah Tandoori House) in 2010. Serving conventionalIndian-Muslim food, it is however their spicy, nasi kandar curries that have regulars hooked. Not only is the food excellent, but the restaurant’s clean surrounds makes this a fantastic placefor western visitors who are not keen on eating in a rustic setting. If you are not in the mood for rice, then sample the restaurant’s signature beef murtabak – a pancake stuffed with beef chunks, savoury potatoes and egg.Address : 164A Lebuh Campbell, GeorgetownTel : +604 261 1095

    Khoo Kongsi

Khoo Kongsi is a grand temple that shines brightly along Lebuh Cannon. It was built to serveas a clan-house for ember of the Khoo family. The walls, pillars and roof are richly decoratedwith intricate carvings bearing the marks ofmaster craftsmen from China and the beams aremade from wood of the finest quality. the temple was rebuilt in 1920 after it was gutted by fire. Some belive the fire was brought about because of the resemlace to the Emperor's Palace inChina. During the seventh lunar month, the temple comes alive with Chinese operaperformances.

    History

Leong San Tong Khoo Kongsi, or Khoo Kongsi for short, is one of the most distinctiveChinese clan associations in Malaysia. It is well known worldwide for its extensive lineage that

can be traced back 650 years, as well as its closely-knit and defensive congregation of buildings and a magnificent clanhouse.

Khoo Kongsi, together with Cheah, Yeoh, Lim and Tan Kongsi, were known as the Five BigClans (Goh Tai Seh) that formed the backbone of the Hokkien community in early Penang.Since mid-19th century, having identified their respective bases, these kongsi rootedthemselves in an area stretching from Chulia Street Ghaut in Georgetown to the lower part of Beach Street in the south. With the respective clanhouses as the nuclei, these kongsidemarcated their territories with their own terrace houses on three or four sides of theperimeters. This adjoining, closely-knit and defensive model settlement, like a clan village in

the colonial city, is a rare form of congregation practised among migrant communities. more>>

Cendol is one of Malaysia’s favourite desserts. But nowhere is the competition more keenthan on Lebuh Keng Kwee, off Penang Road, where two families have been operating their

stalls for decades. One is called “Penang Road Famous Cendol” run by the Loh family, whilethe other is called “Penang Road Famous Teochew Cendol” run by the Tan family.

We chose the Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul from Mr Tan, as recommended by our tour guide. They have been in this trade close to 40 years. Armed with a five-decade oldrecipe, the family roll up their sleeves everyday to prepare bowls of refreshing cendol and aiskacang for their customers. Even Gurmit Singh and Lim Guan Eng patronise his stall!

In a bowl of RM2 chendol, there is aromatic gula Melaka and fragrant coconut milk, certainly aperfect remedy for the blistering heat of Penang. You can have the cendol beside the stall, at

the comfort of air con. Another nice thing about the shoplot is that you can get a delicious, hotbowl of assam laksa from the stall right in front of the door.

Two dimensional painting that trick the viewer into thinking they exists in three-dimensionsallowing visitors to ‘crawl into’ the paintings to take amusing, and often bizarre, photographs. This art form originated in Japan and is gradually gaining worldwide popularity.

Sitting on a flying carpet, pulling Sadako out of the TV by her hair, battling mummies are allpossible at Penang Trick Art Museum. Unlike other museums where signs such as “do nottake photos” or “do not touch” abound, this museum is all about taking photos and being partof the art. It’s a surreal experience walking among art that seems to leap out of the frame. Thisis a great place to have some silly juvenile fun.

During an age when ‘virtual reality’ is taking over the digital world, artists have shown that allyou really needed is a brush and a canvas to trick the mind. This is the true truth as I say it as itis…

    Northam Beach Cafe

The cafe is pleasantly located beside the beach at Northam Road, now called Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah. There are both open air sections and sheltered areas. Most types of street foodare sold here by different hawkers, in addition to western food and Japanese cuisine. Parkingis a breeze as there is ample parking space outside the cafe. Ice batu campur or mixed fruit

ice shavings is available here, besides fresh fruit juices. The chicken & mushroom pot pie isworth trying, as is the hokkien char (stir fried wheat and rice noodles with meat and seafood). The hawker food is mostly average but the loaction is great especially on a breezy evening.
