Viswamitra, a kshatriya king, during one of his exploits chanced to visit the ashram of Brahma
Rishi Vasistha with his retinue when they were received with courtesy and sumptuous hospitality
. He discovered to his delight that Sabala , fountain of unfailing plenty, was responsible for
such an expensive fare in the humble ashram. Being a king he felt that the cow should belong to
him . His appeal to sage Vasistha having failed he tried to covet the cow but, prompted by the
sage, sabala generated a powerful army with which Viswamitra met with defeat.
Vanquished, Viswamitra after handing over his kingdom to one of his sons proceeded to
Himalayas and entered into vigorous tapas directed to Lord Siva . As He appeared ,Viswamitra
was blessed with divine weapons with mastery in each of them. Swelling with pride he rushed
to Vasistha's ashram to wreak vengeance on the rishi. He reduced the ashram to cinders with
the fire weapon. . Fathoming his mind the rishi , unperturbed, resolved to face all the weapons
with his Brahmadanda -holy staff. Viswamithra found to his dismay that all the weapons were
absorbed by the holy staff, one by one. The final weapon in his armoury, Brahmastra, when
launched had cast the world in gloom. as in a full eclipse, which made even the immortals
shudder with fear but to the amazement of one and all , it too was eventually absorbed by the
holy staff making the Brahmathandam as well as the holy man glow with glory.
Disgraced, Viswamitra proceeding to South, embarked on a vigorous tapas yearning to
become a Brahma Rishi. Brahma, pleased with his ardent austerity, blessed him to be a Raja
Rishi. Discontented, he aspired for the status of Brahma Rishi equaling that of sage Vasistha to
be acknowledged by that sage as such.
Just then an ugly and weary person scantily attired in dirty clothes, dropped by at his
ashram and it did not take time for Viswamitra to recognise him as Trisanku who reigned the
Solar dynasty. Having heard the humiliation he had suffered at the hands of Brahma Rishi
Vasistha and his sons because of his desire to reach heaven in the very body, and was cursed to
be a chandala, Viswamitra took pity on him and assured to help him out.

From the desk of
|| 108 Upanishads and their classification ||
Upanishads and Veda Saakaas
***************************
Upanishads are found in the concluding sections of the Veda Saakaas and hence are known as
Vedanta or the end of the Vedas. There are four Veda Samhitas (Rg, Yajur, Sama and
Atharva). The Yajur Vedam has two Samhitas known as the Krishna and Sukla Yajur Vedas.
Hence, One can say that there are 5 Veda Samhitas, if we take into account the 2 Samhitas of
Yajur Veda. Each of the 4 Samhitas referred to above has several branches or Saakaas. Each
Saaka has a Karma Khanda dealing with the actions to beperformed and is made up of
Mantras and Btrahmanaas. Latter deals with Upasana or meditation and has Aranyakas inside
them for the benefit of those who have resorted to the quiet habitat of the forest to pursue
their spiritual Quest.
The Upanishads are found mostly in the Aranyaka section of the Vedas.
The traditional view is that Vysa Bhagavan has classified the four Vedas into 1180 Saakaas and
each of these Saakaa is associated with an Upanishad. Hence, One anticipates 1180
Upanishads. According to this view, there must have been 21 Upanishads for the 21 Rg
Saakaas, 109 for Yajurveda, 1000 for Sama Veda and 50 for the Atharva Veda. Most of these
Saakaas have been lost with the passage of time and we are left with 108 Upanishads today.
The breakdown among the 108 Upanishads according to the 5 Veda Samhitas are as follows:
1. Rg Veda : 10
2. Sama Veda :16

24. Bhasmajabala 25. Ganapati 26.Mahavakhya 27. Gopalatapini 28.Krishna 29. Hayagriva
30.Dattatreya and 31. Garuda .
In the above list of 108, those marked with the Asterik (*) sign are the ten Major Upanishads
commented on by Acharyas.
Besides the major Upanishads, there are 27 Upanishads known as Samaanya Upanishads,
because they deal with teachings of general (Saamanya) interest to all. There are 14 Saiva
Upanishads dealing with Siva ; 8 Sakta Upanishads dealing with Sakti or Devi ; 14 dealing
primarily with Vishnu and hence known as Vaishnavopanishads ; 20 Yoga Upanishads
dealing with different aspects of Yoga and 17 Sanyasa Upanishads dealing with the rules and
different aspects of Sanyasa or Renunciation.
The 27 Saamnaya Upanishads are: Svetasvatara(KY), Garbha(KY), Maitrayani(S), Kaushitaki
(R),Subala(SY), Mantrika(SY),Sarvasara(KY), Niralamba (SY), Sukarahasya(KY),
Vajrasuchi(S), Atmabodha (R), Skanda(KY), Mudgala (R),Paingala(SY), Mahat(S),
Sariraka(KY), Ekakshara( KY),Annapurna (A), Surya(A), Akshi (KY), Adhyatma(SY),
Savitri(S), Atma(A), Pranaagnihotra(KY) and Muktika (SY). Thus 15 out of the 27 belong to
the two Samhitas of Yajur Vedam.
The 14 Saiva Upanishads are : Kaivalya(KY), Atharvasira(A), Atharvasikha (A),
Brahajjabala(A), Kaalagnirudra(KY) , Dakshinamurthi KY), Sarabha (A),Akshamaala (R),
Rudrahrudaya (S), Bhasmajabala(A) , Rudrakshajabala(S), Ganapati(A) ,Panchabrahma(KY),
Jabali (S).
The 8 Sakta Upanishads are: Sita (A), Tripuratapini Annapurna (A), Devi (A), Tripura (R) ,
Bhavana(A), Saubhagyalakshmi (R), Sarasvatirahasya(KY) nad Bahvrichi (R).
The Dominance of Rg Vedic connection indicates the ancient nature of Sakti Worship.
The 14 Vishnava Upanishads are: Narayana(KY), Nrsimhatapini (A),
Tripadvibhutimahanarayana (A), Ramarahasya(A), Ramatapini (A), Vasudeva(S), Avyakta(S),
Tarasara(SY), Gopalatapini (A), Krishna(A), Hayagriva(A), Dattatreya (A), Garuda (A) and
Kalisantarana (KY) . It is interesting to see 9 out of 14 belong to the Atharva Samhita.
Yoga Upanishads and Sanyasa Upanishads constitute 37 of the 108.
The seventeen Sanyasa Upanishads among the 37 are: Brahma(KY), Jabala(SY), Arunika(S),
Paramahamsa(SY), Maitreyi(S), Nirvana(R) , Narada Parivrajaka(A), Bhikshuka(SY),
Turiyatita(SY),Sanyasa(S),
Paramahamsaparivrajaka(A), Kundika(S), Parabrahma(A), Avadhuta(KY), Katharudra(KY)
,Yajnavalkya(SY) and Satyayani (SY).
The remaining 20 belong to the Yoga Upanishads. Fifteen of these 20 Upanishads belong to
the two Samhitas of the Yajur Vedam. Three belong to Atharva, two to Sama and one to Rg
Veda Samhita. Yoga has been defined as Karmasu Kowsalam. One wonders about the
dominance of Yajur Veda Samhita among the Yoga Upanishads.

LATER THEY STARTED WALKING SLOWLY WITH THEIR SMALL LEGS ON THE

THEY WILL RUN BEHIND THE CATTLE HOLDING THEIR TAILS.
DAY BY DAY THEIR THEY STARTED PLAYING MISCHIEF.
THEY STARTED TO DRINK THE MILK FROM THE COW.
THEY STARTED TO STEAL BUTTER CURD FROM OTHER HOUSES.
THOSE LADIES STARTED COMPLAINING ABOUT KRISHNA AND BALRAM.
THEY WILL SHARE THAT BUTTER, CURD WITH OTHER BOYS, MONKEYS

ONCE BALRAM AND OTHER CHILDREN MADE A COMPLAINT TO YASODA
THAT KRISHA IS EATING MUD FROM THE FLOOR.
FIRST YASODA DIDN’T BELIEVE THEIR WORDS. LATER SHE HERSELF SAW
KRISHNA EATING THE MUD.
SHE ASKED HIM TO OPEN HIS MOUTH TO MAKE SURE OF THAT.
KRISHNA OPEND HIS MOUTH !. BUT HER SURPRICE SHE SAW THE ENTIRE

Rivalry with Periya PirAtti ?
"iruppadhu aRindhum,. Agilum Asai vidALAL"
Thirumangai AzhwAr talked about thirumandhiram. He
surrendered at NaimisAraNyam and ThiruvEnkatam.
Azhwar rejoiced over His mind falling at the feet of
the Lord. Reached the extreme and spoke about the
greatness of being devoted to the devotees of Sriman
NArAyaNA.
Despite all this the 'meet' with the EmperumAn did
not fructify. AzhwAr's feelings and agony due to
separation got aggravated and resulted in
transformation into feminine form of Thirumangai
AzhwAr "parakAla nAyaki". Even this parakAla nAyaki
was unable to lament her feelings. The state of
distress was in fact reported and narrated by her
mother.
Mother commences regarding AzhwAr's craving by the
following expressions.
"Oh! Lord your chest-the treasure chest- is adorned
by none other than 'periya pirAtti' . Can anybody
match the greatness of periya periAtti? Can anybody
be at par with Her beauty? Not realising this, Oh!
em-perumAn, my daughter, out of her immense love and
affection is desiring You. It is well known that
pirAtti is never away from You and the intense
affection You have towards Her"
The mother's fear is the presence of periya pirAtti.
The mother apprehends that it may not be correct to
be a rival with periya pirAtti. The situation is
aggravated by the fact that parkAla nAyaki does know
all this and still yearns for your eternal love-
'Agilum Asai vidALAL'
What are AzhwAr's-parkAla nAyaki- thoughts in this
regard? Well, contrast to the fear of mother that
desiring the Lord who is with peirya pirAtti, the
presence of peirya priAtti Herself adds immense
strength and courage to parkAla nAyaki. In fact,
parakAla nAyaki is not just approaching the Lord but
the "sriman nArAyaNA" . The characteristic of periya
pirAtti being 'purushakAram' -mediatrix is
comprehensively realized by parkAla nAyaki and what
in her mother's estimate should be a dissuading
factor is in fact an encouraging aspect.
Thus, Agilum Asai vidALAL- Still She does not
abandon her love, does not hold good as our
philosophy in fact preaches this very thing-fall at
the feet of the Lord who is with peirya pirAtti.
This is what is categorically expressed by
thirumangai mannan in the first pAsuram of the
seventh ten- 'thivALum ven madhi pOle thirumugathu arivai-
sezhumkadal amudhinil piRandha avaLum,' nin Agathu iruppadhaRindhum, Agilum Asai
vidALAL............" 2-7-1;

SRIVAISHN AVISM
The idol that spoke There is a special connection between Acharya Ramanuja and Lord Varadaraja of Kanchi. When Ramanuja’s life is threatened by the Advaitic scholar Yadava Prakasa, Ramanuja escapes and Lord Varadaraja and His consort Perundevi, in
the guise of a hunter and his wife, escort Ramanuja to safety, said K.B. Devarajan in a discourse.
Ramanuja has some doubts. He decides to ask Tirukkacchi Nambi, a devotee of Varadaraja. Nambi wanted to serve Lord Narayana in some way. He went to Srirangam to fan the Lord, but the Lord said that He was surrounded by the river Cauvery and hence He never felt the heat. Nambi then thinks of Tirupati. But here the Lord is on top of a hill, and here again He does not feel the heat. But Kanchi is the place for Nambi to be, says the Lord. It was in Kanchi that the Lord emerged from the sacrificial fire. And He could do with some cooling
down in Kanchi.
So Nambi does ‘alavatta kainkaryam’ (fanning) in the Varadaraja temple in Kanchi. And it is to Nambi that Ramanuja puts his questions. Nambi in turn puts the questions to the Lord, and the Lord replies. The idol form of the Lord never moves or speaks, but that the Lord chose to do so now shows the greatness of Nambi and Ramanuja.
Ramanuja had six questions to which he sought answers. Who is the God who should be worshipped? Are Jeevatma and Paramatma different? What is the method to reach God? Is it necessary to remember God on one’s death bed?
When is ‘moksham’ obtained? Whom should Ramanuja accept as his guru?
Varadaraja gave the following answers to the questions: Lord Narayana is the Parabrahma. Individual souls are different from the Paramatma. ‘Saranagati’ is the means to reach Him. It is not necessary to remember God when one is dying. ‘Moksham’ is attained the moment the mortal body ceases to exist. Peria Nambi was the one Ramanuja was to accept as his Acharya.
Ramanuja’s greatness was sung by Thiruvarangathamudanar and his ‘Ramanuja Nootrandhadhi’ was presented at the Sriperumbudur temple, even when Ramanuja was alive.
