So much has happened since the first one, as schools across the country embrace Chinese language and culture for the first time or deepen their engagement. The examples we’ve highlighted in this newsletter show just how motivating this can be for our young people and this was also demonstrated at the impressive Gleneagles Youth Summit, organised by SCEN in November. Here at CISS we’ve been building on our portfolio of support services for teachers, for learners and for hub co-ordinators. We’ve held three hub network meetings and are working at class, school and Local Authority level, as well as reaching out to schools outwith the hubs, wherever we can. We’ve also made links across our host institution, the University of Strathclyde, spreading the word to students, lecturers and senior managers. In December we hosted our first CISS Board Meeting in Tianjin, linked to Glasgow by way of videoconference. From Tianjin, we went to Beijing to attend the 7th Confucius Institute World Conference – a wonderful insight into Chinese culture and an opportunity to exchange ideas with colleagues from some of the 400 Confucius Institutes around the world. As this newsletter goes to print, a group of 30 Headteachers has just returned from a visit to China. The trip was successful in strengthening links between Scotland and China and gave schools in both countries the chance to work more closely together.

8 February 2013, University of Strathclyde

To welcome the year of the snake, CISS offered staff and students at the University of Strathclyde an exciting programme of events and drop-in workshops, as well as a Chinese buffet. Many colleagues from across the University participated in this celebration. The front lawn of the Lord Hope building became a stage for drummers, lion dancers and Taichi. By the end of the day, hundreds of wishes for the forthcoming year were hanging from our Wishing Tree!

We also worked in conjunction with Ricefield Art Gallery to launch “Takeaway China 2013”. School pupils from Confucius Classroom Hubs around Scotland participated in a snake parade in the Merchant Square, where there was also a Cantonese Opera performance and an exhibition of folk art by Chinese children.

Working in Partnership24 January 2013, Thistle Hotel, Edinburgh

On January 24, 48 delegates attended this event, organised jointly by SQA and CISS at the Thistle Hotel, Edinburgh. The morning session looked at the Principal Assessors’ reports from 2012 for Mandarin Intermediate 1 and 2, as well as Higher and Advanced Higher. There was also an overview and introduction to the new Languages for Life and Work Award and the new Advanced Higher exam.

The afternoon was an opportunity to consider the requirements for National 4 and 5, with an emphasis on the Added Value Unit. In addition, examples of texts suitable for use at Advanced Higher Mandarin were provided. Valuable discussion ensued to help clarify points and offer a chance to share ideas for teaching. We very much hope this will be the first of such joint ventures, as it was well received by the teachers who attended.

“Really enjoyed the day! This is a great contribution to all the Mandarin teachers. Once more, thank you for the wonderful teaching ideas and everything else!”

“Where there is a compression, there will bea resistance”

21 February 2013, University of Strathclyde

On Thursday 21 February, CISS and Ricefield Art Gallery hosted an exciting lecture by Chinese artist Ying Sheng Yang. He delivered an interesting talk on Chinese art in recent history, with a particular focus on the Cultural Revolution. At this time, art was used solely as a propaganda tool by the Chinese authorities. Individuality in art was completely repressed. But as Chairman Mao once said, ‘where there is compression, there will be a resistance’. After the fall of the Gang of Four, the new leader Deng Xiao Ping opened China to the world for the first time since 1949 and art in China began to change rapidly. Ying explained that as the political atmosphere in China has changed over the years, so too has art. In the late 1980s Chinese art hit the international stage and the scene in China changed forever.

Ying himself is from a famous art town, Suining, in Jiangsu province. He is one of the original child artists involved in painting a selection of scrolls which are now touring Scottish schools as part of “Takeaway China 2013”. If you would like to display the scrolls in your school, please [email protected]

This talk received great feedback:

• Plenty food for thought• Really big success • Fascinating• This evening was very exciting, a rich experience, thank you so much. I now feel I can convey information about China to pupils with more depth and structure• Found this talk really interesting. Very personal start on events which made it all the more poignant. Would really like to get an opportunity to see the paintings on tour

[email protected]

“Hong Bao”, Lilybank Nursery, South Lanarkshire

Children at Lilybank Nursery in South Lanarkshire spent a week learning about Chinese New Year. They wore traditional costumes, learned Chinese songs, made paper lanterns and decorated the classroom with the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac. More importantly, they learned to compare Scottish and Chinese cultures. One of the things they found most interesting is that traditionally, at Chinese New Year, Chinese adults give young children a red envelope “Hong Bao”. This envelope contains money and celebrates the fact that the child is one year older. This year, at Lilybank Nursery, children received their first “Hong Bao” from the Head Teacher, Mrs Margaret Gilmour. The envelopes did not contain any money, but they did contain a beautiful Chinese knot, which the children could play with and then hang in their houses as a decoration and as a symbol of good luck. The children loved it!

Learning about China and Chinese, Clarkston Primary, North Lanarkshire

During the winter term, I wanted to focus on developing the class’ understanding of their role as global citizens. I asked what country they would like to study and the unanimous decision was China!

The context for learning about China was the novel ‘Agent Jack Stalwart: The puzzle of the missing panda’ by Elizabeth Singer Hunt. We created secret agent headquarters in the class, as well as secret agent badges, bags and watches. We got daily missions from the Global Protection Force headquarters. These ranged from “find out about the landscape in Shanghai” so we knew what buildings to look for, to “find out about the routine of a six year old in China” so we could blend in with the people there.

We explored the alphabet and the characters associated with different sounds. We looked into common greetings, such as “Zaoshang Hao” for “Good Morning!” and “Ni hao ma?” for “How are you?” The children were really engaged and learning progressed well.

If you are thinking about introducing Chinese to infants or further up the school, I would say go for it! The experience has had positive implications for the pupils’ confidence, literacy development and understanding of their place in a globalised society, as well as the role that language and culture have to play in meeting the challenges of the modern world.

This is what Primary 3 liked best about the theme:

• Reading the story of Agent Jack Stalwart!

• Writing Chinese words.

• Learning about Shanghai and Beijing!

And here’s what they said:

• We made lanterns and it was very fun writing the Chinese letters on them.

• We made Chinese dragons.

• We can use Chinese when we’re older!

Apprendre le chinois en français! Irvine Royal Academy, North Ayrshire

Irvine Royal Academy had its second Confucius Showcase at the beginning of February to celebrate the year of the snake as well as to promote and share the good work done by this secondary school and the 6 associated primary school pupils to promote Chinese language and culture. It certainly was a superb afternoon with fan, snake, dragon and ribbon dances, acrobatics, ICT presentations and more!

On the Monday of that special week, S1 pupils were taught French with a Chinese twist! They learnt lots of interesting facts about their favourite Chinese action movies’ actors like Jet Li, Jacky Chan, Gong Li… all in French. Then they had to use their Franco-Chinese brain cells to participate in a 15 question quiz; every question being related to China. For example, they had to answer: “Comment dit-on au revoir en chinois?” or “What is 一,二,三,四 in French?” Very easy questions for S1 pupils in Irvine Royal Academy as they are all learning French and Mandarin!

Everybody enjoyed learning languages in a different and innovative way. They all participated in the activities and worked together for a better understanding of languages and the role they play in our modern world.

Gangnam Style, Perth High School, Perth and Kinross

On Monday 10th of December 2012, 5 Perth High School students entered a competition in Newcastle, for the 10th Anniversary of the Mandarin Chinese Speaking Competition, organised by the British Council and sponsored by HSBC. Those 5 students were Toma Shah (S4), Cameron Peach (S3), Ross Crawford (S3), Connor Leckie (S3) and Grant Anderson (S3). The five students competed in the ‘Group’ Competition, there were roughly 10 schools in that category. They performed their own rendition of ‘Gangnam Style’, called ‘Po Si Gao Zhong Style’ which is ‘Perth High School Style.’ The students found that this activity had a good impact on their ability to communicate in Mandarin. It helped to improve their pronunciation and vocabulary, in addition to giving them a chance to interact and share a performance with other students of Mandarin. At the start of the song, the students were fairly shy, however, as the song progressed the students got into their stride and started to enjoy themselves. At the end, the students said “We appreciate the opportunity to take part in such a fantastic and enjoyable competition. We are grateful for all the enthusiasm and good comments. It also encouraged us to work harder in class using our ‘extra’ time to take the performance to perfection. We really enjoyed ourselves.” The students even used up part of their lunch time to ensure that vital preparation was completed for the big event in the days prior to the performance. Despite them not making it to the next round, they had an enjoyable and memorable time.
