Round 16 - Korea I Introduction

The events of last weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix have set the scene for a gripping battle for the 2012 Formula 1 World Championship between Ferrari and Red Bull.

Proving that nothing can be taken for granted in Formula 1, the meteorically consistent Fernando Alonso has now been taken out of contention in first corner accidents twice in four races, allowing Sebastian Vettel to close his championship advantage to just four points.

With only five races now remaining, the title fight will undoubtedly get the lion’s share of the attention for the remainder of the season. Looking a little further down the field, however, reveals a series of struggles in which there are arguably even greater consequences. Alonso and Sebastian Vettel may be fighting over the honour of becoming a three-time World Champion, but several others are driving for their careers.

No more so than Kamui Kobayashi, who did his stocks no harm at all by qualifying and finishing inside the top three in front of his home crowd last weekend. The Swiss team’s financial situation ensures that the former Toyota driver’s future is far from secured unless he can find some significant backing. One can only hope that corporate Japan was watching their young hero’s efforts at Suzuka.

Bruno Senna too is in a bind. The Brazilian is under serious pressure from Williams’ highly rated test driver Valteri Bottas, and unless Senna can come up with some greater results in the remaining races or a higher level of funding before next season, a switch could well be on the cards.

Further back in the field, the requirement for increased dollars in order to move forward could mean that any of the smaller teams’ ‘lead drivers’ - Heikki Kovalainen, Timo Glock and Pedro de la Rosa - or their paying counterparts - Vitaly Petrov, Charles Pic and Narrain Karthikeyan - could be heading towards their last Grands Prix.

There is much yet to be decided, and hence much to keep an eye on, as the season draws to its conclusion.

Australian Mark Webber will enter this weekend’s Korean Grand Prix with a point to prove following another

disastrous run last time out at Suzuka.

Having failed to score points at the preceding races in Italy (where he retired after a late spin) and Singapore (where he finished 11th after coming off worst in the pit strategy battle), Webber appeared set for a big result in Japan.

A front-row start marked Webber’s best qualifying result in six races and equalled his best for the year. But while pole-sitter and team-mate Sebastian Vettel charged off into the distance on the way to his second victory in succession, Webber’s car was sent slewing into the infield at the exit of Turn 2 after heavy contact from the Lotus of Romain Grosjean.

Webber fired up to avenge Suzuka shockerAussie Unleashed

The incident had occurred in just the Frenchman’s second start since returning from a one-race ban earned for causing an opening corner pile-up in Belgium. Speaking after finishing the race in an eventual ninth place, Webber described Grosjean as a “first lap nutcase”, adding: “The rest of us are trying to fight for some decent results each weekend but he is trying to get to the third corner as fast as he can at every race. It makes it frustrating because a few big guys probably suffered from that and maybe he needs another holiday.

“He needs to have a look at himself, it was completely his fault. How many mistakes can you make, how many times can you make the same error? First-lap incidents... yeah... it’s quite embarrassing at this level for him.”

The tangle with Webber has brought Grosjean’s tally of first-lap accidents to seven from just 14 races this year. It’s an extraordinary statistic that could lead to the end of the 26-year-old’s, at times, highly promising career if he’s not careful.

“Ever since I came back in Singapore my priority has been to be very cautious at the start... it was a stupid mistake,” admits Grosjean. “Mark came to see me after the race and was obviously not happy, but I apologised and we have to move on. We’ll sit down and look at things again before the next race to see what we can do to improve these situations.”

Although a separate first corner incident between Grosjean’s team-mate Kimi Raikkonen and world championship leader Fernando Alonso saw Webber edge slightly

closer to the top of the points standings in Japan, the Australian now has just five races in which to claw back 60 points from the Spaniard. Now just four points adrift of Alonso, Vettel is clearly the team’s best shot at glory.

The Constructors’ Championship, meanwhile, is also still alive, with its importance to the teams rarely conveyed. Red Bull and McLaren are separated by 41 points heading to Korea, where the former’s team principal Christian Horner will be hoping for a fair fight, clean of what he describes as “unacceptable” first corner shunts.

Page 10: Speedcafe.com Race Guide - 2012 Korean Grand Prix

10 Round 16 - Korea I Cover Story

A former driver himself, Horner believes that Grosjean has the ability to succeed in Grand Prix racing, but needs to learn quickly from his latest gaff.

“Hopefully he will have a good look.. or his team need to get him more under control,” he said. “He is capable of doing it, as he is obviously a quick driver, but so many incidents is unacceptable at this level.

“He needs to really talk to himself, or the team needs to talk to him, because not only is it dangerous for others, but he has cost himself and his team a colossal amount of points - together with the innocent victims that he has collected en route.”

He added: “The most important thing when you make a mistake is to learn from it, and I think the most disappointing thing is that it is a repeat incident and proved extremely costly for Mark, as it did for (Lewis) Hamilton and (Fernando) Alonso at Spa, and numerous other victims earlier in the year. I think the most worrying thing is he doesn’t appear to be learning from his mistakes.”

>> Continuation from page 10

The Red Bull squad heads to Korea on a two-race winning streak thanks to Vettel’s performances in Singapore and Suzuka, its first back-to-back wins of the season. The Japanese event saw the team score its first front-row lock-out of the year in qualifying - an area that had largely been a weakness during the campaign to that point.

The RB8’s improved competitiveness can at least partially be traced to the ‘double-DRS’ device it debuted in Singapore. Although Mercedes pioneered the concept prior to the start of the season, the Marina Bay race saw Red Bull became just the second team to run a front-wing ‘stalling’ system in a Grand Prix. Just how much benefit that the addition has brought is impossible to pin-point from the outside, although it was interesting to note that the Red Bulls were among the 10 fastest cars in a straight line at Suzuka, having languished in just 21st and 24th at Spa early last month.

With Ferrari certain to bring a host of upgrades to the remaining races, the development battle could well decide the identity of the 2012 World Champion.

turn 1High braking demands in the latter part of Turn 1 can potentially make life difficult for the drivers at the start of the race, when

Technical preview with Lotus F1’s trackside operations director Alan Permane

the Car

rear wingDownforce levels here are similar to those of Suzuka, and although Korea does have very long straight, the corners are sufficient to justify carrying a touch more wing rather than focusing purely on speed when pointing in one direction. It’s closer to a Spa or Canada type track than a Monaco or Hungary set-up.

BrakesThis is not a circuit with extreme braking demands, however there are three significant areas of speed retardation – Turns 1, 3 and 4 – which are all at the end of long straights.

SuspensionCar set-up here is a compromise between reasonably good change of direction at high speed – necessitating a stiffer set-up – and the opposing demands of slower speed corners like Turns 1, 4, 6 – which need a softer set-up. One of the features of this track is that it is incredibly smooth, and there are no significant kerbs. This means the car can run very low and close to the ground, especially as there are no notable bumps in the surface.

tyresPirelli’s soft and super soft are allocated. The fast corners mean that it has the highest lateral energy loading of all the circuits where the supersoft tyre is used.

front wingA ‘reasonable’ amount of front wing is needed to balance the car through the medium and high speed corners; slightly more than at a lower speed circuit, but not as much as at Silverstone or Suzuka.

engineKorea sits in the middle of the power-driveability ratio, with engine demands similar to those of Australia. A mix of good driveability through the medium to low speed corners, responsiveness out of the slower chicanes / hairpins combined with good top end power for the three long straights is required. Good traction is essential for the lower speed corners such as Turns 1, 4, and 6, meaning smooth power delivery from the engine is an advantage here. Fuel consumption is very high over one lap due to the stop-start nature of the final sector.

the CirCuit

the cars are at their heaviest and tyres at their coolest.

turns 3 approachOver 300kph is reached on the approach to Turn 3 before heavy braking into this tight right-hander. Higher speeds could be attained on this long straight, however wing levels required for the remainder of the lap mean that maximum velocity is constrained by drag and gearing.

turns 4 - 6More heavy braking demands here after a significant straight leading into the slowest section of the track, where good low speed change of direction and mechanical grip are required.

turn 7 - 13Turns 7-13 are quite long, sweeping corners, relying on good downforce and balance from the car. Turn 8 is the fastest point – taken at almost 300kph – before heading to the slower turns 9 and 10. Overall quite a satisfying section of race track for the drivers.

turns 14 - 18130R is flat out, but more difficult when the cars are heavy with fuel.

turn 17Turn 17 is actually quite high speed heading on to the first straight.

competitiveness over recent races, a point most proven by the team’s front-row lock-out in Japan.

Vettel is therefore the red hot favourite to take the race win. Mark Webber meanwhile needs to get himself up off the canvas after a string of poor results. A return to the podium would be just the ticket.

results weren’t helped by poor grid positions, a fact that could be put down to an unlucky run with yellow flags in Q3 (for Lewis Hamilton) and a pre-event gearbox change penalty, but at the end of the day they simply weren’t fast enough. That was a surprise, considering that the Suzuka layout was one on which the MP4-27s were expected to shine.

Regardless, if anyone can put up a fight this weekend against Red Bull it will be these guys.

FERNANDO ALONSO

the Bagman’S SaY...Fernando Alonso’s fortunes at Suzuka underscored the

fact that nothing can be taken for granted in Formula 1. The Spaniard’s points lead was slashed from 29 to just four thanks to a first corner incident that was triggered by a touch between Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen’s Lotus.

The new equation almost ensures that Alonso will have to win races to take the title. While the team will bring a host of new parts to the upcoming events in order to make that happen, the car simply hasn’t shown the speed in recent events to indicate that a victory will be possible here.

the Bagman’S SaY...Mercedes needs solid results from both of its drivers in

the coming races if it is to fend off the advances of Sauber in the battle for fifth in the Constructors’ Championship. DANIEL RICCIARDO

the Bagman’S SaY...Daniel Ricciardo again made the most of the troubles

among the lead pack in Japan to score a well earned fourth top 10 finish of the season. Perhaps frustratingly for the Australian, he still trails team-mate Jean-Eric Vergne in the standings courtesy of the Frenchman scoring his total of eight points with pairs of eighth place finishes in Malaysia and Belgium.

Regardless, the team has scored nine of its 15 season points in the four races held since the midseason break - a good result considering the cars have hardly made a leap forward in terms of raw pace. That shows that one should never right them off completely heading into a weekend.

the Bagman’S SaY...It finally happened in Japan. After a litany of incidents and

missed opportunities, Pastor Maldonado finally scored his first points since winning the Spanish Grand Prix in mid-May. It was somewhat ironic that Suzuka marked just the second time in eight races that the Venezuelan had missed Q3, which it would turn out helped him escape the opening turn carnage.

Team-mate Bruno Senna has had more first lap accidents than anyone outside of Grosjean so far this year, adding further to his tally at Suzuka. Unfortunately, the likeable Brazilian’s days in the top line category may be numbered.

HEIKKI KOVALAINEN

the Bagman’S SaY...Caterham could be encouraged from what they saw in

Japan as their lead driver Heikki Kovalainen took advantage of the opening lap melee to run 11th during the early stages. Although holding out Paul di Resta and Jean-Eric Vergne for some time, the Finn would eventually fall back to a more customary 15th.

The team will head to Korea again hoping to jag a result that’ll leap-frog them back past Marussia for the all-important 10th spot in the Constructors’ Championship following Timo Glock’s surprise 12th place finish in Singapore.

PEDRO DE LA ROSA

the Bagman’S SaY...Suzuka provided somewhat of a breakthrough for the

HRT as Pedro de la Rosa out-qualified both a Caterham and a Marussia on the Saturday. While the race didn’t go to plan for the Spaniard thanks to a issue at his first stop, he had at least proven a point on what is widely regarded as a ‘true driver’s circuit’.

The Japanese Grand Prix form will give de la Rosa some confidence heading to Korea, but finishing ahead of his rivals on pace will still be a tough ask.

TIMO GLOCK

the Bagman’S SaY...Marussia may have lucked into its 10th place in the

Constructors’ Championship due to the unpredictable events of the Singapore Grand Prix, but it at least showed that it is making headway in Japan.

Timo Glock was just 8.5s behind the Caterham of Heikki Kovalainen at the end of the Grand Prix. Expect the German to again give his green rivals a run for their money this weekend.
