The Abbotsford Food Bank continues to push towards its goal of raising $600,000 worth of food for those in need this holiday season.
Food Bank director Dave Murray says it’s been a very tough year and even the people who manage to donate are saying that they wish they could do more.
“We are at a record number of people who need help, about 1,000 more than last year, and yet have only managed to raise $40,000 worth of food,” says Murray.
“Financially, we are really behind and I believe it’s a re ection of the economy, so we just have to pray that people support us as we continue to do the best we can during these times.”
At this time of year, Murray is waiting to see what comes in from local schools that generally hold their food drive right before Christmas break. He is also excited about the Abbotsford Heat Teddy Bear Toss on Dec. 14 that not only raises money, but donates hundreds of teddy bears to families with children over Christmas.
“More great news for us is that the Auto Mall Food Drive is preparing to deliver the largest food donation
we have ever had,” says Murray. “I believe it will amount to eight tons of food, which will help carry us right through to next Christmas.”
The Fraser Valley Auto Mall Annual Food Bank Drive is in its sixth year, and as part of the event’s tradition, it will form a convoy of at least a dozen vehicles to deliver non-perishable food items to the Abbotsford Food Bank. Included in the group will be a number of re and rescue vehicles, Abbotsford Police and large Save-On Foods trucks, set to depart from the Auto Mall on Mt. Lehman Rd on Dec. 15 at 11 a.m.
Manager of the Fraser Valley Auto Mall (FVAM), Steve Magown, feels it is their duty to play a constructive role in the community.
“I nd that in a reasonably af uent community it’s unacceptable to let people go hungry, and the mere thought of this is the catalyst to do more to help and make sure that we offer people in need of the basics.”
PriceSmart on South Fraser Way and The Abbotsford News have now joined the two Save-On Foods stores in Abbotsford, and the Abbotsford Fire and Rescue Service to tackle the demand for food in the community.
All eight dealers of the FVAM and Auto Mall Autobody continue to collect food and decorate vehicles in
each of their locations in preparation for the convoy. Certain dealerships have even raised their individual per store donation from $1,000 to $1,500 worth of additional food to contribute.
The Abbotsford Fire and Rescue Auxiliaries will also be campaigning door-to-door in an attempt to increase donations.
“Abbotsford residents are known to be generous people and ready to open their hearts and wallets,” says Magown. “Once you are made aware of a problem, you’re usually halfway to a solution.”
It is anticipated that the Abbotsford Food Bank will see a minimum of $20,000 worth of food donated, provided to the FVAM at an “at-cost” purchase from Save-On Foods.
Magown believes that although the commercialization of the season can be fun and enticing, there is a much larger picture to be seen.
“It’s an awakening for everyone as we get educated on the fact that seniors go hungry and kids have nothing to open on Christmas morning,” says Magown. “It’s the awareness factor that brings people to do unsolicited acts of kindness, and we should be reminded of this all year round.”
Feed the Hungry Give where you live.

Sticking to a healthy eating plan during the holiday season can be difficult. On days that you find it tough to follow a healthy diet – or on designated cheat days – you can at least stop some of the excess carbohydrate (starch) and fat calories from adding to your expanding fat cell accounts by supplementing with scientifically proven starch and fat blocking nutrients. Even Dr. Oz is talking about the benefits of white kidney bean for those days when you cannot follow a healthy eating regimen.

Festive wine options tantalizePractically everything you’re going to read about wine between now and Dec. 24 will be telling you what to serve with your turkey-dinner spread.
But what if you’re not celebrating the season with a turkey dinner?
Fear not. Here are wine options to accompany two other holiday menus.
FONDUEIf you’re gathering people around the table for a fondue with pots of hot oil, then you’ll likely have all sorts of foods to pair with your wine: beef and poultry (some marinated, some not), vegetables, shell sh, and a variety of dipping sauces—spicy, salty, sweet.
You might think it would be a nightmare to pair that lot with a single wine, but it’s not.
Pick a sparkling wine that is either dry or off-dry. Prosecco, an Italian sparkler, is one of my favourites with food that has been cooked in oil. It is juicy enough to clear away
the coating left by the oil in your mouth, preparing it for the next bite, and usually has enough residual sugar to complement sauces that have a bit of a sweet edge. Plus, you get bubbles.
Prosecco is available at most B.C. liquor stores and rings in at $14 and up, depending on the brand.
PRIME RIBPick a red wine with good tannic structure to go along with your rare roast beef. The protein in the meat will soften the tannins and smooth everything out, allowing you to enjoy the wine and food equally.
Prime rib is our Christmas Eve dinner and this year I will serve LaStella Maestoso 2006 as our premier bottle. I rst sipped this vintage in 2009. At that time, according to my notes, the wine was rich, tannic and earthy, with aromas and avours of red and black fruit, sweet spice, herbs and dark chocolate. I can’t wait to taste it now.

What would the holidays be without snowakes falling outside, a mug of hot cocoa in hand and a favourite Christmas movie on television?
Watching Christmas movies is a holiday tradition for many families. So much so that lines from popular movies are easily remembered and recognized. Those who can recite movies verbatim might enjoy testing their mettle with the following Christmas quiz loaded with memorable quotes from some holiday classics.
1. “ It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags.”
2. “ Uh, since the United States Government declares this man to be Santa Claus, this court will not dispute it. Case dismissed.”
3. “ I want an ofcial Red Ryder, carbine action, 200 shot range model air rie.”
4. “ Bless this highly nutritious microwavable macaroni and cheese dinner and the people who sold it on sale. Amen.”
5. “ Who gave you permission to tell Charlie there was no Santa Claus? I think if we’re going to destroy our son’s delusions, I should be a part of it.”
6. “ I want to wash my hands, my face, my hair with snow.”
7. “ We all know that Christmas is a big commercial racket. It’s run by a big Eastern syndicate you know.”
8. “ Seeing is believing, but sometimes the most real things in the world are the things we can’t see.”
9. “ We’re not just doing this for us. We’re doing it for the kids. For every kid who ever sat on Santa’s lap. For every little girl who left cookies and milk for Santa on Christmas night. For every little boy who opens a package Christmas morning and nds clothes instead of toys. It breaks my heart.”
10. “ I fear you more than any spectre I have seen. But as I know your purpose is to do me good, and as I hope to live to be another man from what I was, I am prepared to bear your company, and do it with a thankful heart. Will you not speak to me?”
11. “ Light the lamp, not the rat, light the lamp, not the rat! Put me out, put me out, put me out!”
12. “ That’s not ‘my’ Christmas! ‘My’ Christmas is lled with laughter, and joy... and this: my Sandy Claws outt. I want you to make it.”
13. “ I passed through the seven levels of the Candy Cane forest, through the sea of swirly twirly gumdrops, and then I walked through the Lincoln Tunnel.”
ANSWERS: 1. “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas” 2. “Miracle on 34th Street” 3. “A Christmas Story” 4. “Home Alone” 5. “The Santa Clause” 6. “White Christmas” 7. “A Charlie Brown Christmas” 8. “The Polar Express” 9. “Jingle All the Way” 10. “A Christmas Carol” 11. “The Muppets Christmas Carol” 12. “The Nightmare Before Christmas” 13. “Elf”

The high-calorie food extravaganza often begins in early December and lasts right into the New Year with the Christmas parties and family gatherings. With a little help, you can keep from eating too much during the holidays
1. Don’t go to a party hungry. We tend to eat faster when we are hungry so consider having a healthy snack before going to a party.
2. Pace yourself. Slow down when you’re eating at a party. Taking small bites and fully chewing food helps you digest it better and control your portion sizes.
3. Drinks. Between high calorie drinks and coffee/alcohol that can dehydrate your body, this is an area to really watch. For every one drink, aim to drink one glass of water as it helps keep you hydrated and slows down the calorie consumption.
8 oz eggnog = 350 calories 5 oz glass of wine = 100 calories 12 oz beer = 150 calories 1.5 oz Scotch = 100 calories 8 oz pop = 150 calories Soda water/diet drinks = 0 calories.
4. Fill up on low calorie choices rst. If there are raw vegetables or cut up fruit or plain seafood, start with those to take the edge off your appetite.
Suzanne Quiring is a Registered Dietitian with 17 years experience. FOR MORE INFO: [email protected] or visit www.fvdietitian.ca
5. Use a small plate. A smaller plate piled high with veggies and healthy meats will give your eyes the impression that you are having a feast.

These days the majority of people will attend a number of holiday dinners between the in-laws and your own extended family. By the time the New Year arrives, most of us are getting tired of eating turkey and stuf ng. Consider something different this holiday season. I nd that a crown rack of pork makes a beautiful centerpiece for a dinner. There are a number of amazing local options, from Gelderman Farms Ltd., to Lepp Farm Market to Johnson’s Meats to source quality pork racks. Instead of cranberry sauce, try a peach or apple compote to complement the meat.
FOR THE PEACHES:
• 1 large jar of preserved summer peaches, stones removed, chopped• 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil • 2 large shallots, sliced thin• 4 sprigs of thyme • 2 cloves garlic minced• 1 cup of white wine • 1 tbsp honey• Salt and pepper to taste
Method:In a medium heavy-bottomed saucepan, sweat the shallots in the olive oil to soften. Add garlic and thyme, saute for 2 minutes more, deglaze with white wine. Add the chopped peaches, honey and salt and pepper to taste. Simmer the compote until fruit has softened and the juices have reduced to a thick consistency. Spoon over roasted and sliced pork.
Serve this with a German or Alsace Riesling or a Viognier wine. The crisp acidity of the Riesling will cut through the meat’s natural oils and the Viognier will pair with the peaches. If you are serving a red wine, make sure it has a light body and low tannins so it doesn’t overpower the white meat.
Wine Pairing
FOR THE PORK:• 1 - 6-bone centre cut fresh pork rack• 12 strips of bacon• Salt and pepper for seasoning
Method:Season the pork rack liberally to taste. Wrap the bacon around and in between the bones. Tie with butcher twine. Place in a pre-heated 365º F oven (convection on if possible). Roast for approximately 40-55 minutes (depending on thickness) until internal temperature reaches 148º-150º degrees. (Pork can have a bit of pinkness and still be safe to eat).
Crown of pork is a great alternative

Give Looking for the perfect gift? A mala is the perfect fit.
Looking for a perfect holiday gift? One that embodies peace and encourages someone to follow their dreams? A mala is the perfect t.
Simply stated, a mala is a set of beads that has traditionally been used in prayer and meditation. (Often called prayer beads.) They can be worn by anyone seeking a calmer mind, body, and spirit.
These malas are made with rudraksha seeds — which grow inside of what looks like a blueberry on trees in South East Asia. Sustainably harvested, the beads (or seeds) are believed to embody peace and love.
The jewelry is unique — not only because it’s fair trade — but because it also features gemstones.
And those stones are believed to offer different healing qualities. For example, turquoise is thought to increase love and destroy hatred, while lava is said to provide strength and clarity.

A very merry Santa Claus has travelled all the way from the North Pole to Sevenoaks Shopping Centre, where he will meet with his beloved fans until Christmas Eve. Wearing the traditional Santa out t, he beckons eager children over tow his plush green and red chair. Once huddled around, he spends a few moments reading each Christmas list aloud, many scrawled in crayon, before a helper elf collects them to bring them to the North Pole, of course.
This particular Santa, who has been visiting the shopping centre for the past ve years, says that he likes returning because the people of Abbotsford are “very, very nice.”
“The children’s smiles and the joy on their faces lets me know that I’m making them happy, and brings me the most pleasure in return,” he says. “Nobody could have a better job than I do.”
Although there are the occasional tears when it’s time to sit on Santa’s lap, he handles it with a smile, and shares a jolly laugh with the parents.
Naturally, one question on everyone’s mind, is how Santa can possibly make it all around the world to deliver toys in one night? His response is simply, “magic” – something that he says is around us every day.
“You just have to believe, because you never know when a piece of magic is going to touch you. I am so privileged over all these years to experience all the magic that has touched me, and I just want to give it back in any way that I can.”

Emerald has been named by Pantone as its Colour of the Year for 2013.
Does the colour of the year in uence the way you decorate your home each year?
In case you are also wondering what this top colour selection can lead to, be on the lookout for home décor stores to bring back many emerald-hued treasures all the way along the yellow brick road from the Emerald City! From couches and lamps to small home accessories, this jewel-toned hue will bring an element of glamour to your home!
Emerald is, however, a hue taken directly from nature, from the leaves on a tree to the earth’s precious gems. It is quite versatile, with its split personality — it offers moods that are downright eco-conscious, and it can then transform into a glamorous diva in the blink of an emerald eye.
Whether you take it in a more rustic direction (think leaves and twigs) or jewel-tone glam, Pantone’s Colour of the Year will bring a sense of well-being, harmony, and balance to your home.
