She worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Barbados before studying law at the University of the West Indies. She was called to the Bar in 1989 at Inner Temple. SPEAKER PROFILES

Susan Belgrave studied languages at Heriot-Watt University and later gained a Masters in International Relations at LSE. She worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Barbados before studying law at the University of the West Indies. She was called to the Bar in 1989 at Inner Temple. Her early years of practice were spent in Brussels at the European law firm of Stanbrook and Hooper. She holds a Masters in European Law from Universite Libre de Bruxelles. Susan moved to London in 1992 and specialises in employment and discrimination law at 7 Bedford Row. Susan is recognized as a leading practitioner in her field in Legal 500 and has appeared in a number of high profile cases including Virdi v Metropolitan Police, Amachree v Wandsworth and Jarrett v Essex Council. Susan was Head of Equality and Diversity and Head of Employment Law at her previous chambers before moving to 7 Bedford Row in 2014. Colin Bobb-Semple is a law lecturer who holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Law, Master’s Degrees in Law and in Criminal Justice, and is qualified to practise as a higher court solicitor advocate in England and Wales, as an attorney at law in Guyana and as a solicitor and barrister in St Kitts-Nevis. He practised as a solicitor in general practice in London for several years and lectured on the Bar Course at the Inns of Court School of Law, Gray’s Inn, London, for twenty years. He has published extensively in the fields of Criminal Justice, Racial Equality, Legal History and Human Rights. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Black Solicitors Network in 2007 for his accomplishments in legal practice and in legal education, and a Teaching Excellence Award from City Law School, City University, London in 2007.

Dawn Brathwaite is a partner with national firm Mills & Reeve LLP.  Dawn’s area of specialism is Healthcare Law.  She advises health providers (hospitals), commissioners (clinical commissioning groups and NHS England) and health regulators (e.g. Care Quality Commission).  This makes for interesting and varied cases, from advising on health policies relating to drugs and treatments, judicial review challenges against decisions not to fund particular drugs/treatments, patient related orders, to enforcement action taken by the CQC.  She also advises the Human Fertilisation & Embryology Authority, the organisation that regulates fertility clinics in England. Dawn is a graduate of the University of the West Indies and upon qualification worked in Trinidad.  She was admitted to the roll of solicitors in England in 1991.  She holds a LLM in Advanced Civil Litigation and a MBA in Law Firm Management from Nottingham Law School, Nottingham Trent University. Rosemarie Cadogan is an international lawyer and legal adviser with the Ocean Governance and Natural Resources Division of the Commonwealth Secretariat, London. Her project and transactional experience spans over 15 years on projects in West Africa, the Caribbean, Australia and South America. She has acted as a consultant to governments and regional groupings on legal issues relating to the exploration and exploitation of natural resources, including negotiating and drafting international agreements for joint management of trans boundary deposits, fisheries agreements, maritime enforcement, extended continental shelf submissions and maritime boundary delimitation. Rosemarie holds a degree in Law from the University of the West Indies, a Post Graduate Diploma in International Relations from the University of Guyana, and a Masters’ Degree in Marine

Terrence Wendell Brathwaite is a Sr. Lecturer in Law at the Coventry Law School and ATLAS Expert/European Union Adviser to the Russian Government & Higher Education Institutions on Tourism for the (€)1.5 million TEMPUS/EU Project 2012-15. He is also the Co-ordinator of the Law School’s ‘Career in Law’ Legal Workshop 2015, former Course Director of the Faculty of Business & Law’s Chartered Management Initiative Programme, Founding Convenor of the world’s first MSc Degree in Global Development & International Law, and former International Consultant (Industrial Medicine) to the British Council in Kazakhstan. Prior to joining Coventry University in 1994, Terry served as Social Marketing & Programme Coordinator (International Training & Development) to the multilateral World Trade Institute of Latin America & The Caribbean, Executive Consultant (Human Productivity Management) to the Secretary General of the regional Caribbean Association of National Telecommunication Organisations, and Project Coordinator (Social Marketing) at The University of the West Indies. He has held Visiting Lectureships at Harvard University (Boston, USA), the CENTRUM Católica Business School (Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú – Lima, Peru), the National Normal University of Taiwan (Rep. of China), the Emirates Aviation University (Dubai), the Universities of Tomsk & Kemerovo (Siberia/Russia) just to name a few. Terry has an MA Degree (European Union Law) from Leicester University, and an MPhil Degree (Industrial Medicine) from the University of Birmingham. A trained Mediator and Investors in People (IiP) Advisor, his main research interests are Global Development Management, Law, Social Justice & Industrial Medicine. He is a Chartered Marketeer & Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, a Companion of the Institute of Sales & Marketing Management, a Fellow of the International Institute of Law & Medicine, and a Fellow of the

Penny Carballo-Smith is the founder and executive director of the social enterprise Future Think (www.futurethink.info) which equips marginalised communities for 21st century jobs. Penny graduated from the University of the West Indies with a Bachelor of Laws degree, and trained as an Attorney-At-Law at Trinidad’s Sir Hugh Wooding Law School. After completing a Masters degree in International Business Law at the London School of Economics and Political Science, Penny pursued a career in corporate tax consultancy in London at the professional services firm KPMG. She moved on to specialize in advising think tanks and other Not for Profits on governance and strategy, and founded the social enterprise Future Think in 2011. Penny’s research interests include governance, job creation and technological

Yvonne Jacobs-Jones returned to the UK in 1993 after spending the preceding 19 years living in New York City, USA, with the last 5 years practising as an Attorney at Law. In the United Kingdom, she worked for an immigration charity for 5 years and then became an Advocate for the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board until it ceased to exist in March 2000. Yvonne commenced working in April 2000 for the Administrative Court Office based in the Royal Courts of Justice in London as a Band A lawyer. As well as having experience in matters concerning public law, Yvonne also has considerable judicial experience, having sat as a Magistrate in the City of London Petty Sessions Area from 2004 to 2009, and as a Fee-Paid Judge in the First Tier Tribunal (IAC) from 2007 to 2015. Yvonne has recently become a Senior Legal Manager in the Administrative Court Office. Nageena Khalique QC is Head of the Public Law and Court of Protection groups at No.5 Chambers. She was called to the Bar in 1994 and ‘took silk’ in 2015. Nageena has appeared in the High Court and the Court of Appeal on a number of wide ranging public law matters, and her work in the Administrative Court has largely been as a result of her work in the fields of inquests, health and social care, mental health, healthcare regulation and detention in prisons. She is also a leading expert in Court of Protection matters, and a member of the Attorney General’s A panel of civil advocates (since 2010). Nageena is a keen marathon runner having completed 8 international and national marathons, numerous triathlons and aquathons. Her other interests include skiing, opera, ballet and reading. She speaks Urdu and German and is co-founder and charity event organiser for Facefacts charity, which provides help and support for patients who have sustained facial injury or who have undergone reconstructive surgery for the treatment of head and neck cancer or war/trauma injuries. Nageena was Birmingham Law Society’s Barrister of the year for

Gus John is an associate professor and honorary fellow at the UCL Institute of Education, director of Gus John Consultancy Limited and director/co-founder of All Africa Advisors Ltd. He is a member of the African Union’s Technical Committee of Experts that is tasked with working out the modalities for making the Global African Diaspora the Sixth Region of Africa. He has worked with governments in West, South and North Africa, helping to develop strategies for meeting the Millennium Development Goals, with specific emphasis on education (especially improving access to education for girls) and youth development. In 2014, Prof John completed an independent comparative case review for the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA), researching issues of bias and disproportionality in the SRA’s regulation of Global Majority [Black and Minority Ethnic] solicitors and their firms. He chaired the Equality, Diversity and Social Mobility Working Group as part of the Legal Education and Training Review, the report of which was published in 2013. In 1989 he was appointed Director of Education in Hackney, the first black Director of Education in the UK. When the two departments were amalgamated in 1993 he became Hackney’s first Director of Education and Leisure Services, a post he held for just under 8 years. Since leaving Hackney, Professor Gus John has been working as an international development consultant in Britain, Europe, Africa and the Caribbean and was until 2008 a Visiting Faculty Professor of Education at the University of Strathclyde and Special Adviser to Glasgow City Council on race and social inclusion. Between 2002 and 2007, he audited the Race Equality Policies and Action Plans of all Higher Education Institutions in England, Scotland and Wales for their respective funding councils. He was an adviser to former Home Secretary Jack Straw on race and social inclusion and conducted a consultation for the former Attorney General, Lord Goldsmith, on ‘Deaths in Custody’ and the over representative number of black and Irish people who die in the custody of the State. He was a member of the Channel 4 sponsored Street Weapons Commission into serious youth violence and gun- and knife-

Paul McFarlane qualified as a solicitor in 1995. He joined Weightmans LLP since 2006 and was made a Partner in 2009. Paul has extensive experience advising both public and private sector clients on all aspects of employment law (both contentious and non-contentious). He regularly advises employers on complex and sensitive discrimination and 'whistleblowing' claims which they have. He also advises on both employers and employees on senior management terminations. Specialties: Advising on industrial relations disputes, age discrimination, working time issues and senior executive terminations. Recent success include: negotiating a six figure settlement for a Claimant in relation to an unfair dismissal and age discrimination claim they filed against their former employers; successfully defending a six figure race discrimination and victimisation claim brought by a doctor against a Primary Care Trust. Paul is a member of ELA and sits on its Legislative & Policy Committee. He is currently co-chairing a working

Harriet Lodge is a Lecturer in Law who joined at the Coventry Law School in 2012. She graduated from the University of Hull with a LLB Law (Hons) degree and later went on to achieve a ‘Very Competent’ in the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC). Harriet was called to the Bar by the Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn in 2012 and continues to be actively involved with the legal profession. Her teaching areas of specialism include English Legal Systems, Constitutional & Administrative Law, Law & Business Organisations, Law of Obligations, Mediation and Criminal Evidence. Her research interests are Criminal Law, Access to Justice and International Human Rights. Harriet is also involved with the Law School’s Law Employability, Diversification and Enrichment (LEDE) project, which has created a programme of workshops, events and opportunities to

Lorraine Moses-Copeman is a senior solicitor with experience in both private practice and public sector organisations. Lorraine also mentors students and young professionals. Following receipt of an LLB honours degree in Law, a Diploma in Legal Practice, completion of a training contract and professional skills course, Lorraine entered the Rolls of Solicitors in 2007. She specialises in planning law, economic regeneration and practice development. She is also an advocate with experience in dealing with regulatory prosecutions, consumer law and civil disputes. Lorraine's work in regulatory law has been featured in local newspapers and one case was the subject of the television programme "Rogue Traders". Prior to becoming a qualified legal professional Lorraine worked as legal adviser to commissioners in the equalities sector, gained skills in forensic pathology and undertook managerial roles within the probation service. She was nominated for the award of "most promising young lawyer" and has received an award in recognition of her work in practice development. She has been interviewed by the "Lawyer", delivered presentations to the judiciary, students and legal professionals. Her recent achievements include working on large scale development projects and steering her employer's

Juan Antonio Caldero is a Lecturer in International Law at Coventry University. He graduated with a First Class Political Science and Sociology Degree in 1993 from Complutense University in Madrid and completed two MA in Diplomacy, Law and Global Change, and European Studies at Coventry University. Juan has lectured at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels for over 5 years at both Coventry University and University of Warwick. He has an interest in on-line learning (OIL) through podcasts and webinars and his students participate with students from the University

Lewitt Nurse - Born in Leeds, West Yorkshire, Lewitt attended secondary school in Barbados, where he obtained an LLB from the University of the West Indies. After returning to the UK and obtaining an LLM in corporate and commercial law from Queen Mary College, University of London, he was called to the Bar at the Inner Temple in 1990 upon completing the Bar vocational programme at the Inns of Court School of Law in Grays Inn. He then pursued and successfully completed a pupillage and worked in the commercial law team at the London Borough of Lewisham before returning to Barbados where he worked for Clark & Co (now Clarke, Gittens & Farmer). Lewitt obtained a Legal Education Certificate from Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad and was called to the bar in Barbados. After moving to the United States, Lewitt passed the New York Bar exam and was admitted in 1999. He then worked in various roles at Law firms and companies in the New York Metropolitan area, and returned to London in 2005 to work at Santander Global Banking & Markets. Ian Rajaratnam is a Paralegal for Leigh Day. Ian has been specialising in employment discrimination law for a number of years and has a particular interest in race discrimination law. Prior to joining the Employment and Discrimination Department at Leigh Day, Ian assisted Anthony Robinson in his legal practice at Scott-Moncrieff & Associates Ltd Solicitors. Previous to this he worked for a number of not-for-profit legal advice organisations where he represented people through the employment tribunal process including advocacy in preliminary hearings. Ian has recently assisted in the case of Ms E Jarret-v-Essex County Council, where an Employment Tribunal found in favour of a solicitor who had been discriminated against and subsequently dismissed because of her race. Ian is currently assisting in a Group Litigation brought on behalf of a number of construction workers who were blacklisted by numerous leading construction firms over several decades. He currently serves on the Executive Committee of the Law Centres

Suzanne Reece is a former solicitor and BPTC lecturer at City University London. Suzanne studied politics at Lancaster University. She then went on to complete her post graduate studies at Nottingham Trent University, qualifying as a solicitor in 1988. Suzanne worked as a solicitor for over seventeen years. She has worked as an in-house lawyer and for firms in Birmingham, Northampton and London predominately in civil practice specialising in personal injury litigation. In 2005 Suzanne became a lecturer at City Law School, City University London. She taught on the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) for over nine years; teaching civil law and legal practice skills such as advocacy, drafting and opinion writing. She co-ordinated the civil advocacy course and contributed key chapters to the course core reading manual on Advocacy. Suzanne supervised students at the Law School’s Pro Bono Clinic. In addition she was a vocal advocate for students and staff wellbeing issues, as a

Vanessa Rizzioli (née Hutchinson) is the founder and Principal of Cranwicke Consulting, a recently launched finance transactions consultancy in the energy & infrastructure sectors. Prior to that she was a corporate and project finance lawyer in the law firm Freshfields and Principal in London of New York-based emerging markets investment bank Nova Capital Global LLC. She also served for a year on secondment from Freshfields as acting Legal Director of Amey Ventures Ltd, a Ferrovial/British Airports Authority group subsidiary. Vanessa is also an entrepreneur having had active interest in a number of business ventures, including notably a London start-up trading business in the restaurants sector. Vanessa holds a master of law (LLM) degree from Cambridge University (Queens College) in

Nick Squires is a Solicitor and Sr. Lecturer at Coventry Law School. He holds an LLB in Law (Hons) and an LLM in Law from Warwick University. Before joining Coventry Law School Nick worked previously at the University of Nigeria (UNEC) in Nsukka and Enugu, and as a solicitor in private practice with MJ Darby & Co in Birmingham. He is also the co-ordinator of Coventry Legal Advice Service (CLAS) based at the Hope Centre in Hillfields where students supervised by staff and with links to local law firms and organisations provide free legal advice and assistance. Nick’s academic specialisms are International and Comparative Law, and Practical Legal Skills. He has an interest in on-line learning (OIL) through podcasts and webinars and his students participate with students from the University of Wismar, the HWR University in Berlin, and the Catholic University of Buenos Aires. Nick is External Examiner for the LLM Programme at Wolverhampton University, and External Examiner for the LLB /LLM QLD Programme at Birkbeck College, University of London responsible for modules Legal Practice LADD004S6 and Legal Writing and Advocacy LALA012HS. His main interests are in International and Comparative Law and International Human Rights. Richard Wilson Q.C. Call 1981 Silk 2003. Richard is an experienced Barrister & Mediator with extensive specialist knowledge across different areas of law. He has established a reputation for being cogent and determined in court, and for clarity and precision in his written work. Richard’s notable cases over the years include appearances in the UK Supreme Court, the House of Lords, the Court of Appeal (Civil Division) and the High Court (Chancery Division, Queen’s Bench Division, Administrative Court / Divisional Court). Mohammed Lamin Wurie is a Second Year student reading for his LLB in Law at Coventry University Law School. He became president of the Coventry University Law Society in 2014, and has recently represented the University at the National Union of Students (NUS) Conference, where he was elected to serve as a Committee Member for international students. He is also serving as a Student Councillor representing international students from Africa, Asia and the Americas at the Coventry University Student Union – a position he has held for two consecutive years.
