Construction crews are working to complete a major $300 millionreplacement facility for Baptist Memorial Hospital North Mississippi, which will serve Oxford, Lafayette County and the surrounding area. The

new five-story structure will have 602,831 sq. ft. (56,004 sq m), including 217 beds with morecomprehensive medical and surgical services.

With the growth our area has experienced in the last decade, building a newer, updated hospi-tal to serve the community became an easy decision, said Bill Henning, administrator and CEOof Baptist North Mississippi. The new hospital is a replacement hospital with the same numberof beds as the current hospital. However, the new building will afford us the space to add newservices, the flexibility for future changes in patient care and provide the infrastructure for new

passing Montgomery in four years and grow-ing larger than Birmingham by 2022.

Birmingham is currently the largest city inAlabama with about 212,000 people.Huntsville is the smallest of the four at about188,000.

Hennings Construction Puts Its Customers First By Lori TobiasCEG CORRESPONDENT

When Darren Hennings crews head outon a job, he tells them, I like our customersto see us like the calvary when they see uscoming over the hill, and thats how I wantyou to act, too.

That attention to customer service goes along way in explaining why HenningsConstruction, specializing in grading andsite utilities from its East Bend, N.C., head-quarters, not only survived the recent reces-sion intact, but in the years between 2008and 2011 doubled in size. The companysonly downturn was in 2009 when revenuefell a mere two percent.

We had a lot of good cus-tomers who were obviouslygood contractors so they hadsome work and in turn, theygave us work, Henningssaid. We thrive on repeatbusiness. We had good rela-tionships and we like tothink we are a kind of go-tocontractor and were able tohave enough work to keepthings moving. It was just alot of hard work and a lot ofhard work on the part of ouremployees.

Hennings knew from ayoung age that he wanted tooperate his own business. His father worked for a gen-eral contractor and Henningsgot involved working withthe firm during his highschool summers. He studiedat North Carolina State

University, earning a degree in engineering. His first year out of college, he worked for asoil testing company, then became a projectmanager for the general contractor where hisfather worked. But the call to start his ownbusiness was strong, and before long he hadhis first contract.

We did an animal shelter here in YadkinCounty, Hennings said. We did the clear-ing and grading and a bit of storm drains. Itwas a $40,000 job, moving a couple thou-sand yards of dirt.

At first he wasnt certain hed made theright decision, but it didnt take long forHennings to know he was exactly where hewas supposed to be.

I really felt like I was on vacation when Iwas out there working, just something Ialways wanted to do.

Today, he has a staff of 55, including hisbrother, Britt, a partner who looks after theoffice, and handles estimates, bidding andcontracts, and his wife, Cathy, who managesthe payroll.

From that first job moving a couple thou-sands yards of dirt, Hennings Construction

has gone on to working onprojects including shoppingcenters, schools, a gym and afood service center. Today, hiscrews are hard at work clear-ing and grading pads for the26-acre Hanestowne Villagedevelopment in Winston-Salem, the former site of theHanes textile manufacturer. Its a brownfield site, withcontaminated soil that mustremain on site. Crews areusing some of the soil to cre-ate building pads.

We actually built amechanically stabilized earthwall, Hennings said It was30 feet tall and 400 feet long.Thats where we put 75,000yards of excess soil they need-ed to get rid of. The wall is soilwith a geogrid wire basketface.

His fleet of equipment has grown fromone piece to more than 50.

I started out with one piece, Henningssaid. I just added machines as we neededthem. I have 13 excavators, six track loaders, one rubber tire loader, three motor graders, rubber tire backhoes, skid loaders, trenchrollers. Its a lot to look after for sure.

He recently added new equipment fromMay Equipment.

I bought a motorgrader from them yearsago in 2007, Hennings said. That was aCaterpillar grader. I recently bought a Terexoff-road truck, and two new Hyundai exca-vators, a 260 last fall and a 160 this year. They gave us a real good price on them. Ithought they were nice machines and withthe price, they were a good value. Wehavent had any problems with them.Theyve been good to us. I also bought aTerex truck. We rented four of them on vari-ous jobs and rented this one for about a year.I just decided to go ahead and buy it. TheMay service crews have maintained themachines. I had couple of repairs on thetruck, which has about 3,000 hours on it, andno repairs on the excavators. The 260 has1,500 hours and the 160, less than a thou-sand. The service has been good.

(This story also can be found onConstruction Equipment Guides Web site atwww.constructionequipmentguide.com.)CEG

The Hyundai R260LC-9A has about 1,500 hours on it, and the machine has beentrouble free.

The wet conditions of the Hanestowne Village Project didnt slow down the Hyundai R260LC-9A.The operator loads the Terex TA300 artic truck.

(L-R): Darren Hennings of Hennings ConstructionCompany talks with Tony Goins and Richie Ambrose, both of May Heavy Equipment.

MWI Pumps Prepares for Milestone 90th Anniversary By Brenda RuggieroCEG CORRESPONDENT

MWI Pumps is a pump manufacturingcompany, located in Deerfield Beach, Fla.,with a simple philosophy, to provide innova-tive, high quality pumps at competitiveprices and take care of each customer.

Founded in 1926, MWI is preparing forits 90th year in business. The company spe-cializes in the design, manufacture and useof high efficiency axial and mixed flow pro-peller water pumps worldwide for a varietyof applications, including constructiondewatering, bypass pumping, flood control, emergency pumping, storm drainage, irriga-tion, water transfer, mines, water diversion, water infrastructure security and open pitdewatering.

Throughout the years, the company hasgrown organically, as well as through acqui-sitions. In 1983, the company purchased oneof the oldest pump companies in Florida,Couch Pump, founded in 1917. In 1998,MWI purchased the assets of Sloan PumpCompany, a pioneer in the development anduse of hydraulically driven trash pumps forconstruction dewatering.

In 1968, MWI also got into the pumprental business, with the invention of ahydraulically driven axial flow pump whichcould move larger volumes of water at lowercost than anything previously on the market. The company named it the Hydraflo. Today,MWI is one of the leaders in providingpump, dewatering and sewer by-pass solu-tions throughout Florida, according to thecompany. Over the years, the company hasadded multiple locations for the rental divi-

sion from Fort Myers to Jacksonville, alongwith rental distributors in multiple locationsoutside of Florida and representativesthroughout the world.

In 1989, MWI built a 26,000 sq. ft. (2,415sq m) repair facility situated on 20 acres inVero Beach, Fla. This facility repairs andservices all makes of axial and mixed flowpropeller pumps as well as any brand ofdewatering equipment.

The company still remains a family busi-ness and all are engineers from theUniversity of Florida. Dana Eller is the pres-ident of the company. Ellers brother Darenis the vice president, and is a licensed pro-fessional engineer who heads up the compa-nys engineering department. His sisterDanielle also is a PE with her masters inenvironmental engineering, and works part-time (when not home schooling her five chil-dren), and their father David serves as thecompany chairman. John Springer runs theentire rental and repair branch, which makesup a sizable portion of the company, andMarc Boudet is head of engineered productsales for the factory.

I think we added up the other day with our top 15 leaders of the company, wehad over 415 years of experience, Ellersaid. Thats not too bad. All of our uppermanagement has been here almost 30years.

On the construction dewatering side, thecompany builds off forecasts, so enginebuilds are locked in and are generally JohnDeere and Yanmar, although they can useany type of engine a customer requests. Most pumps from 4 to 12 in. (10 to 30 cm)

    Marlin (L) and David Eller.

Throughout the years, the company has grown organically, as well as throughacquisitions. Founded in 1926, MWI is preparing for its 90th year in business.

    ARE ALLARE

Lift day came and went without incident. But what made this construction project a success was the larger ALL team. The outbounders who prepped the cranes before the job. The operators who checked equipment before every shift. The safety people and project managers who, for the good of the customer, help to keep the whole team moving in the same direction. And this team is part of a much bigger team, the ALL Family of Companies. ALL Erection & Crane Rental Corp., an Equal Opportunity Employer

MWI Tests Small 12.5 hp RotaryDewatering Pump in Marketare generally available with short deliveries. On the large engineered product side, biggerengines are generally used, such asCaterpillar, John Deere, Detroit Diesel, andCummins. These engines drive pumps thatcan be as large as 12 ft. (3.6 m) in diameterand move more than 800,000 gpm.

On the horizon, Eller mentioned a smallrotary dewatering pump that MWI has beentesting in the market for the last year and ahalf.

It has been received quite well, and wereplanning on rolling it out in larger scale, hesaid. Its a little six-inch, and weve namedit the little sucker. Its 12.5 hp, and usesvery little fuel to accomplish big results. Itsa quiet unit very small and compact for very small dewatering jobs. Customersreally seem to take a great interest in it, sowere planning on starting to roll that outmore. Were also always looking at improv-ing our construction dewatering equipmentand pumps. With over 20 patents to our fam-ily name, there is always some excitingR&D going on at MWI, as we continue toexplore ways to advance the field of moving

water in ways that provide tangible benefitsto our customers. We love moving water. You can say its in our blood.

How Contractors Can MakeSocial Media Work for ThemBy Jeff WinkeCEG CORRESPONDENT

At first blush, the idea that a constructioncontractor should have a Facebook pagemay seem ridiculous.

Isnt Facebook the place for selfies, pho-tos of drinking parties, vacation brags, pho-tos of cute babies-puppies-kittens and every-thing else that has nothing to do with busi-ness and construction? That may have beentrue years ago, but Facebook has evolvedand changed.

As of the third quarter 2015, there are 1.55billion monthly active users making Facebook themost popular social networkplatform worldwide. Thereare now more than 40 mil-lion small business pagesand 41 percent of U.S. smallbusinesses use Facebook. And all those numbers aregrowing. Facebook is solidlyhere.

Used smartly, Facebookcan be a powerful sales, mar-keting and communicationtool for the construction con-tractor. However, aFacebook page is NOT asubstitute or replacement fora company Web site.

The company Web siteshould explain and promotethe companys marketexpertise and experience that supports thecontractor services offered. It can includecompany history, equipment lists, descrip-tions of current and past projects, profiles ofkey company management, and the contrac-tor services provided. Quite simply, the com-pany Web site is the go-to source for every-thing from learning about the company, whatthey do, how they can help, and why theymay be the best choice to work with. And itsthe first place people turn to for looking up aphone number, email address, or the locationof a company office or service center.

A construction company Facebook pagehas a different, distinct role from the compa-ny Web site. It can serve as the social gluethat connects employees, customers, andprospects to the company. The impressioncan be positive, human and professional.

Think of the company Facebook page asbeing the evolutionary successor of the tradi-tional printed-paper company newsletter. The printed newsletter, which was mailedand/or tucked into the paycheck envelope, and even the more current electronic or

emailed version, was created to acknowl-edge and celebrate achievements, accom-plishments and significant events. It docu-mented and chronicled everything of impor-tance, becoming a cumulative history of thecompany and its employees and customers.

A contractor Facebook page, like its pred-ecessor newsletter, can make an employeefeel appreciated by the company they workfor and proud of the work being done.Customers will learn about the people theyconnect with and will feel better about thecompany theyve hired. The personal canhelp solidify the business relationship.

In its analysis, San Francisco-basedVerticalResponse, an online marketing toolsfirm, suggests an 80/20 rule for Facebookcontent being posted on a company page.Eighty percent of posts should be social and20 percent can pertain to services, projects, and what the business can offer customers.

Here are suggestions for social contentthat can be posted:

Employee milestones marriages, births, graduations, retirements, promotions, and anniversary dates of employees (includethe one-year anniversary of the new employ-ee as well as the old timers 10, 15, 20-yearanniversary).

Accomplishments include any indus-try awards received, workshops and specialtraining received (including vendor/suppliertraining sessions), and any regional ornational trade shows that employees weresent to. If employees are being sent to bigshow, such as World of Concrete, name theemployees going and the products, systems,

    see FACEBOOK page 30

Used smartly, Facebook can be a powerful sales, marketing and communication tool for the construction contractor.

Firm to Convert Landfills MethaneGas Into Electricity by Years EndBy David McGeeBristol Herald Courier

Bristol, Va. (aP) a Virginia firm expects to begin con-verting methane gas from the citys landfill into electricity byyears end.

ingenco resources development, a richmond-basedenergy production firm, is building a $4.5 million facilitythat will use gas created by rotting landfill garbage to fuel aseries of engines. in turn, the engines will create electricitythat will be sold to the tennessee Valley authority.

the work site was a beehive of activity as contractorsinstalled electrical wiring, set up the first of the convertedcommercial truck engines and performed dozens of othertasks needed to get the facility operational in december.

right now the city pulls the gas from wells in the landfilland flares [burns] it. Most landfills burn it because it controlstheir smell and it keeps them in ePa compliance, said tomHecmanczuk, the companys director of construction. Whatwere going to do is bring the gas into our plant and makeenergy.

ingenco has a contract to sell the electricity to tVathrough a connection being extended to BVus east Bristolsubstation.

the company employs this same technology at 12 of the17 energy plants it operates in Virginia, Maryland,Pennsylvania and North Carolina, Hecmanczuk said, notingthat its not rocket science.

at its absolute peak, the plant is designed to produce 6megawatts of power, which is roughly equivalent to the elec-tricity needed to power about 6,000 homes.

We build modularly. We use six engines, which we call asix-pack, and that generates about 2 megawatts of electrici-ty. in this case we are putting three six-packs in there so nom-inally we could create 6 megawatts, Hecmanczuk said. Wecan put another one in and, if they start generating a wholebunch of gas, we can expand the building and put more in.its an art more than a science and its hard to predict.

as we look at their gas curve, we think we will max outat 4.5 megawatts. You can power 1,000 to 1,200 homes witha megawatt. if they produce more gas we can get beyondthat, Hecmanczuk said.

Plans are to produce about 2 megawatts initially and about3 megawatts by the first quarter of 2016.

and while the electricity is produced here, it will be soldto tVa, which will then resell it to local provider BVu.

People ask about if their bill will go down. BVus solesupplier is tVa, so the physical electrons will stay here inBristol but the contract path is to tVa, and BVu will buythis power from tVa. We sell it wholesale and have nothingto do with the retail market, Hecmanczuk said.

BVu purchases about $28 million in power from tVaannually.

We are currently building a dedicated circuit from oureast Bristol substation over to their facility, BVu electricalengineer richard adkins said. We got the constructionagreement signed with them [ingenco] so that they wouldpay for all of the construction to get them a dedicated circuitto their site. if there is any problem with their facility, it wontaffect any of our customers.

this project has been in the works for about three years. We did procurement several years ago and signed this

contract in 2012, tabitha Crowder, city manager said.

ingenco had to get an air permit and tVa inter-connectagreement and those things take time.

tVa reported no negative findings after completing itsenvironmental assessment of this project in May 2014.

City leaders initially selected another firm that planned toclean up the landfill gas and sell it to natural gas provideratmos, but that deal was never completed.

With the original firm, the market fell out while we werenegotiating the contract, they wanted more control over ourwell field than we wanted to give them and we went to thenext highest respondent, which was ingenco, Crowder said.

as part of its agreement, ingenco agrees to pay the city apercentage of revenues it receives, based on the amount ofgas it receives.

the city provides the methane and, in exchange, we getfrom 5 to 25 percent of the revenue. its based on our flow.on average we did about 1,200 cfm [cubic feet per minute]so in that ballpark, that is 15 to 17 percent of the revenue,Crowder said. they gave us some projections in 2012. atbest, the first year we would get $350,000.

a recent presentation to the BVu board overestimated thecitys likely share, Hecmanczuk said.

the good thing for the city is any revenue we get is extrabecause presently we flare that gas off, Crowder said. thisallows us to recoup some money and all were doing is pro-vide the methane were already harvesting off the landfill.

the plant will employ four people and is expected to oper-ate around the clock every day of the year. in addition to acomputerized monitoring system inside the building, offi-cials at the company headquarters in richmond will be ableto monitor the production.

Mark Campbell, the citys environmental and safety com-pliance officer, said residents shouldnt be concerned aboutany safety issues.

We monitor all around the [landfill] property boundary asrequired by the permit, Campbell said. We monitor week-ly at all the wellheads at the surface of the landfill to makesure we dont have any gas in any concentration that wouldcause any danger to human health or the environment andwe will continue to do so.

about 90 percent of the landfills gas piping is under-ground.

Power plant ventilation is designed to assure there is noconcentration of methane gas, Hemcamczuk said.

We will change the air inside this building more than onetime a minute. With that kind of ventilation we have done thecalculation where you can cut the gas pipe with a sawzall[reciprocating saw] and youre not going to get gas enoughin here to make it explosive, Hecmanczuk said. landfillgas is only about 50 percent methane and its coming in atlow pressure. We have never had even the slightest problemwith methane. Weve got oil in here, weve electric in here.its an industrial place and i think those are more of a hazardthan methane.

the engines are all inside the building and mufflers will beinstalled to reduce noise levels.

Both sides expect the project to have a long lifespan. Gasis piped from the current quarry landfill, which has 31 yearsremaining, and the two former landfills and Campbell esti-mates the gas supply totals more than 100 years.
