ABOUT SOUL BASEL / OUR SPONSORS

About Overtown Soul Basel

Overtown Soul Basel brings awareness to Black art during the world renowned Miami Art Basel Festival, held this year December 2, 2015 to December 6, 2015.

While the Art Basel Miami Fair is one of the largest annual cultural exhibitions of contemporary arts to be held in Miami, the Overtown Soul Basel adds to that excitement by showcasing works of art from the African, Caribbean and Latin Diasporas

and from dozens of established and emerging artists. More significantly, Overtown Soul Basel high-lights Overtown as an emerging cultural destination. This year’s exhibitions will feature galleries at the Black Archives Historic Lyric Theater Cultural Arts Complex, the Ward Rooming House Gallery and the Overtown Media Hub.

The exhibitions will feature a series of exciting programming and events that incorporate art with: music, entertainment, film, fashion, workshops and more.

ABOUT THE SOUTHEAST OVERTOWN / PARK WEST CRA

The Southeast Overtown / Park West Community Redevelopment Agency (“CRA”) is one of three community redevelopment agencies within the municipal boundaries of the City of Miami. The CRA was created in 1982 to promote and encourage the redevelopment of the Overtown and Park West communities (redevelopment area). The main objective of the CRA is to spearhead new development and redevelopment efforts that accomplish beneficial revitalization with-in its boundaries.

Our Mission

The CRA’s main mission is to enhance the quality of life, improve the public health, safety, morals and welfare of the residents and stake-holders in the redevelopment area.

The agency is funded through a unique financing tool called Tax In-crement Financing, which earmarks a specific portion of property tax dollars collected by the City of Miami and Miami Dade County. In turn the CRA reinvests these funds back into the redevelopment area by funding various projects that enhance the quality of life for its residents. Such activities include, but are not limited to: infrastruc-ture upgrades, façade improvements, economic development incen-tive programs to attract new businesses to the redevelopment area and the promotion and support of job creating initiatives.

The agency is governed by a CRA Board, whose members are City of Miami Commissioners. The board's policies on redevelopment activi-ties are implemented by the executive director.

FACTS ABOUT VENUES

The Historic Lyric Theater Cultural Arts Complex

Back in its heyday, Overtown was known as “Little Broadway”. Rivaling the nightlife of Harlem, iconic Afri-can-American performers like Billie Holiday, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin and Sammy Davis Jr. performed at several local hotspots and venues including the Historic Lyric Theater. The epicenter for culture in black Miami, the theater thrived between 1913 and the 1960s.

Today, it’s been returned back to its original glory, preserving golden memories. The Lyric Theater building is now the home of the Black Archives Historic Lyric Theater Cultural Arts Complex. Visitors can stroll through the museum learning about the history of Black Miami and catch concerts, theatrical performances as well as variety acts. On the first Friday of the month, there’s Lyric Live – a variety show modeled after Amateur Night at the famed, Apollo Theatre in New York City.

The Historic Ward Rooming House Gallery

The Historic Ward Rooming House Gallery, Built in 1925, was known as a resting place and safe haven for

both Blacks and Native Americans. The building is now a historic landmark and serves as an art gallery and

exhibition hall. The facility is currently programmed by the Black Archives and Research Foundation of

South Florida Inc.
