SOM-13 Understanding Jesus: Gospel of Luke This   class  will   examine  how  Filipinos  view   Jesus  Christ   and  how   that  view  can  be  reconciled  with  the  biblical  presentation  of  who  Jesus  is.  How  can  I  bring  a  biblical  understanding  of  Christ  into  my  ministry?

SOM-‐13  Understanding  Jesus:  Luke      1

SOM-13  Understanding  Jesus:  Gospel  of  Luke    Purpose  of  Luke    1.  Selections  from  Luke  1  &  24    Questions:

1. How  valid  is  my  experience  in  understanding  Jesus?  2. What  is  the  relationship  between  the  Word  of  God  &  my  experience  when  it

comes  to  understanding  Jesus?  3. Is  one  more  valid  than  the  other?  Is  my  experience  with  Jesus  valid?  Or  only

what  is  written  in  the  Word?    Luke  1:1-‐4  –  Many  have  attempted  to  write  about  what  had  taken  place  among  us.  They  received  their  information  from  those  who  had  been  eyewitnesses  &  servants  of  God's  word   from   the  beginning,  &   they  passed   it  on   to  us.   I,   too,  have   followed  everything  closely  from  the  beginning.  So  I  thought  it  would  be  a  good  idea  to  write  an  orderly  account  for  Your  Excellency,  Theophilus.  In  this  way  you  will  know  that  what  you've  been  told  is  true.

Luke  24:45-‐48  –  Then  he  said  to  them,  "These  are  the  words  I  spoke  to  you  while  I  was   still   with   you.   I   told   you   that   everything   written   about   me   in   Moses'  Teachings,  the  Prophets,  &  the  Psalms  had  to  come  true."  Then  he  opened  their  minds   to   understand   the   Scriptures.   He   said   to   them,   "Scripture   says   that   the  Messiah  would  suffer  &  that  he  would  come  back  to  life  on  the  third  day.  Scripture  also  says  that  by  the  authority  of  Jesus  people  would  be  told  to  turn  to  God  &  change  the  way   they   think  &  act   so   that   their   sins  will  be   forgiven.  This  would  be   told   to

people   from   all   nations,   beginning   in   the   city   of   Jerusalem.   You   are  witnesses   to  these  things.      2.  Purpose  of  Jesus:  Observations  on  Luke  4    Luke  4:14-‐30  –   Jesus  returned  to  Galilee.  The  power  of   the  Spirit  was  with  him,  &  the  news  about  him  spread   throughout   the   surrounding  country.  He   taught   in   the  synagogues,  &  everyone  praised  him.  Then   Jesus   came   to  Nazareth,  where  he  had  been  brought  up.  As  usual   he  went   into   the   synagogue  on   the  day  of  worship.  He  stood  up  to  read  the  lesson.  The  attendant  gave  him  the  book  of  the  prophet  Isaiah.  He  opened  it  &  found  the  place  where  it  read:    "The  Spirit  of  the  Lord  is  with  me.  He  has  anointed  me  to  tell  the  Good  News  to  the  poor.  He  has  sent  me  to  announce  forgiveness  to  the  prisoners  of  sin  &  the  restoring  of  sight  to  the  blind,  to  forgive  those  who  have  been  shattered  by  sin,  to  announce  the  year  of  the  Lord's  favor."    Jesus   closed   the   book,   gave   it   back   to   the   attendant,  &   sat   down.   Everyone   in   the  synagogue   watched   him   closely.   Then   he   said   to   them,   "This   passage   came   true  today  when  you  heard  me  read  it."    All   the   people   spoke  well   of   him.   They  were   amazed   to   hear   the   gracious  words  flowing  from  his  lips.  They  said,  "Isn't  this  Joseph's  son?"    So   he   said   to   them,   "You'll   probably   quote   this   proverb   to   me,   'Doctor,   cure  yourself!'  &   then  say   to  me,   'Do  all   the   things   in  your  hometown  that  we've  heard  you've  done  in  Capernaum.'”    Then   Jesus   added,   "I   can   guarantee   this   truth:   A   prophet   isn't   accepted   in   his  hometown.    "I  can  guarantee  this  truth:  There  were  many  widows  in  Israel  in  Elijah's  time.  It  had  not  rained  for  3  1/2  years,  &  the  famine  was  severe  everywhere  in  the  country.  But  God   didn't   send   Elijah   to   anyone   except   a  widow   at   Zarephath   in   the   territory   of  Sidon.   There   were   also   many   people   with   skin   diseases   in   Israel   in   the   prophet  Elisha's  time.  But  God  cured  no  one  except  Naaman  from  Syria."    Everyone   in   the   synagogue   became   furious   when   they   heard   this.   Their   city   was  built  on  a  hill  with  a  cliff.  So  they  got  up,  forced  Jesus  out  of  the  city,  &  led  him  to  the  cliff.  They   intended   to   throw  him  off  of   it.  But   Jesus  walked  right  by   them  &  went  away.      Observations    1.  Jesus’  reading  of  Isaiah  in  Nazareth  is  not  the  start  of  his  public  ministry.  vv  14-‐16  –  “…  the  news  about  him  spread  throughout  the  surrounding  country.  He  taught   in   the   synagogues,   &   everyone   praised   him.   Then   Jesus   came   to   Nazareth,  where  he  had  been  brought  up.  As  usual  he  went  into  the  synagogue  on  the  day  of  worship.”

Page 4: Som 13 understanding jesus–luke - workbook

SOM-‐13  Understanding  Jesus:  Luke      3

2.  Jesus  acted  in  the  power  of  the  Holy  Spirit  V14  –  “The  power  of  the  Spirit  was  with  him  …”  How   was   Jesus   able   to   survive   a   sinless   life   on   earth?   Because   he   was   God?   Or  because  he  was  filled  with  the  Holy  Spirit?    3.  The  people  were  overjoyed  to  hear  Jesus’  message  &  accept  the  “year  of  the  Lord’s  favour”?  v22   –   “All   the   people   spoke  well   of   him.   They  were   amazed   to   hear   the   gracious  words  flowing  from  his  lips.  They  said,  ‘Isn't  this  Joseph's  son?’”    4.   Jesus  observed  something  about   the  people  of  Nazareth   that   is  not   immediately  obvious  in  the  story  vv23-‐ff  –  "You'll  probably  quote  this  proverb  to  me,   'Doctor,  cure  yourself!'  &  then  say   to  me,   'Do   all   the   things   in   your   hometown   that   we've   heard   you've   done   in  Capernaum.'”      5.  Jesus  was  right!  Everyone   in   the   synagogue   became   furious   when   they   heard   this.   Their   city   was  built  on  a  hill  with  a  cliff.  So  they  got  up,  forced  Jesus  out  of  the  city,  &  led  him  to  the  cliff.  They   intended   to   throw  him  off  of   it.  But   Jesus  walked  right  by   them  &  went  away.      a.  So,  what  is  the  problem?  (Hint:  It  relates  to  Jesus  story  of  Elijah  and  the  widow)  b.  Apply  it  today.  Do  we  do  the  same  kinds  of  things  that  Jesus’  countrymen  did?      2.  What  is  a  disciple?      Luke  &  Discipleship

1. When  does  someone  become  a  disciple?  2. What  are  the  criteria?  3. Can  a  person  be  a  Christian  and  not  be  a  disciple?  4. Do  the  following  verses  help  clarify  the  issue  of  being  a  disciple?  How  so?

Mt  26:  56    All  of   this  has  happened  so  that  what  the  prophets  have  written  would  come  true."  Then  all  the  disciples  abandoned  him  and  ran  away.        Acts  9:26    After  Saul  arrived  in  Jerusalem,  he  tried  to  join  the  disciples.  But  everyone  was  afraid  of  him.  They  wouldn't  believe  that  he  was  a  disciple.  Acts  11:26    After  finding  Saul,  Barnabas  brought  him  back  to  Antioch.  Barnabas  and  Saul  met  with   the   church   in  Antioch   for   a  whole  year  and   taught   a   large  group  of  people.  The  disciples  were  called  Christians  for  the  first  time  in  the  city  of  Antioch.

SOM-‐13  Understanding  Jesus:  Luke      5

Lu  6:40  The  disciple  is  not  above  his  master:  but  every  one  that  is  perfect  shall  be  as  his  master.  Lu  7:11  And   it   came   to  pass   the  day   after,   that   he  went   into   a   city   called  Nain;  &  many  of  his  disciples  went  with  him,  &  much  people.  Lu  7:18  And  the  disciples  of  John  showed  him  of  all  these  things.      Lu  7:19,  18  And  the  disciples  of  John  showed  him  of  all  these  things.  And  John  calling  to  him  2  of  his  disciples  sent  them  to  Jesus,  saying,  Are  you  he  that  should  come?  or  look  we  for  another?  Lu  8:9  And  his  disciples  asked  him,  saying,  What  might  this  parable  be?      Lu   8:22   Now   it   came   to   pass   on   a   certain   day,   that   he  went   into   a   ship  with   his  disciples:  &  he  said   to   them,  Let  us  go  over   to   the  other  side  of   the   lake.  And  they  launched  forth.  Lu  9:1  Then  he  called  his  12  disciples  together,  &  gave  them  power  &  authority  over  all  devils,  &  to  cure  diseases.      Lu  9:14,  16,  18  For   they  were  about  5000  men.  And  he  said   to  his  disciples,  Make  them  sit  down  by  50s  in  a  company  …  Then  he  took  the  five  loaves  &  the  two  fishes,  &   looking   up   to   heaven,   he   blessed   them,   &   brake,   &   gave   to   the   disciples   to   set  before   the  multitude  …  And   it  came  to  pass,  as  he  was  alone  praying,  his  disciples  were  with  him:  &  he  asked  them,  saying,  Whom  say  the  people  that  I  am?      Lu  9:40  And  I  besought  your  disciples  to  cast  him  out;  &  they  could  not.  Lu   9:43   And   they   were   all   amazed   at   the   mighty   power   of   God.   But   while   they  wondered  every  one  at  all  things  which  Jesus  did,  he  said  to  his  disciples,  ….  Lu  9:54  And  when  his  disciples  James  &  John  saw  this,  they  said,  Lord,  do  you  want  us  to  we  command  fire  to  come  down  from  heaven,  &  consume  them,  even  as  Elias  did?      Lu  10:22,23  All  things  are  delivered  to  me  of  my  Father:  &  no  man  knows  who  the  Son  is,  but  the  Father;  &  who  the  Father  is,  but  the  Son,  &  he  to  whom  the  Son  will  reveal  him.  And  he  turned  him  to  his  disciples,  &  said  privately,  Blessed  are  the  eyes  which  see  the  things  that  you  see:      Lu   11:1   And   it   came   to   pass,   that,   as   he  was   praying   in   a   certain   place,  when   he  ceased,  one  of  his  disciples  said  to  him,  Lord,  teach  us  to  pray,  as  John  also  taught  his  disciples.      Lu   12:1   In   the   mean   time,   when   there   were   gathered   together   an   innumerable  multitude  of  people,  insomuch  that  they  trode  one  upon  another,  he  began  to  say  to  his   disciples   first   of   all,   Beware   you   of   the   leaven   of   the   Pharisees,   which   is  hypocrisy.  Lu  12:22  And  he  said   to  his  disciples,  Therefore   I   say   to  you,  Take  no   thought   for  your  life,  what  you  shall  eat;  neither  for  the  body,  what  you  shall  put  on.

SOM-‐13  Understanding  Jesus:  Luke      6

Lu  14:26-‐27,33  If  any  man  come  to  me,  &  hate  not  his   father,  &  mother,  &  wife,  &  children,  &  brethren,  &  sisters,  yes,  &  his  own  life  also,  he  cannot  be  my  disciple.  And  whosoever  does  not  bear  his   cross,  &   come  after  me,   cannot  be  my  disciple.  …  So  also,  whosoever  he  be  of  you   that   forsaketh  not  all   that  he  hath,  he   cannot  be  my  disciple.    Lu  16:1  And  he  said  also  to  his  disciples,  There  was  a  certain  rich  man,  which  had  a  steward;  &  the  same  was  accused  to  him  that  he  had  wasted  his  goods.  Lu  17:1  Then  said  he  to  the  disciples,  It  is  impossible  but  that  offences  will  come:  but  woe  to  him,  through  whom  they  come!      Lu  17:22  And  he  said  to  the  disciples,  The  days  will  come,  when  you  shall  desire  to  see  one  of  the  days  of  the  Son  of  man,  &  you  shall  not  see  it.  Lu  18:15  And  they  brought  to  him  also  infants,  that  he  would  touch  them:  but  when  his  disciples  saw  it,  they  rebuked  them.      Lu   19:29,37,39   And   it   came   to   pass,   when   he   was   come   nigh   to   Bethphage   &  Bethany,  at  the  mount  called  the  mount  of  Olives,  he  sent  2  of  his  disciples,  …  And  when  he  was  come  nigh,  even  now  at  the  descent  of  the  mount  of  Olives,  the  whole  multitude  of  the  disciples  began  to  rejoice  &  praise  God  with  a  loud  voice  for  all  the  mighty   works   that   they   had   seen;   …   And   some   of   the   Pharisees   from   among   the  multitude  said  to  him,  Master,  rebuke  your  disciples.      Lu  20:45  Then  in  the  audience  of  all  the  people  he  said  to  his  disciples,  Lu  22:11  And  you  shall  say  to  the  good  man  of  the  house,  The  Master  says  to  thee,  Where  is  the  guestroom,  where  I  shall  eat  the  Passover  with  my  disciples?      Lu  22:39  And  he  came  out,  &  went,  as  he  was  wont,   to   the  mount  of  Olives;  &  his  disciples  also  followed  him.  Lu  22:45  And  when  he  rose  up  from  prayer,  &  was  come  to  his  disciples,  he  found  them  sleeping  for  sorrow,    Ac  6:1-‐2,7  And  in  those  days,  when  the  number  of  the  disciples  was  multiplied,  there  arose  a  murmuring  of  the  Grecians  against  the  Hebrews,  because  their  widows  were  neglected   in   the   daily   ministration.   Then   the   twelve   called   the   multitude   of   the  disciples  unto  them,  &  said,  It  is  not  reason  that  we  should  leave  the  word  of  God,  &  serve   tables.   And   the   word   of   God   increased;   &   the   number   of   the   disciples  multiplied  in  Jerusalem  greatly;  &  a  great  company  of  the  priests  were  obedient  to  the  faith.    Ac  9:1  And  Saul,  yet  breathing  out  threatenings  &  slaughter  against  the  disciples  of  the  Lord,  went  unto  the  high  priest,  Ac  9:10  And  there  was  a  certain  disciple  at  Damascus,  named  Ananias;  &  to  him  said  the  Lord  in  a  vision,  Ananias.  And  he  said,  Behold,  I  am  here,  Lord.  Ac   9:19   And   when   he   had   received   meat,   he   was   strengthened.   Then   was   Saul  certain  days  with  the  disciples  which  were  at  Damascus.

SOM-‐13  Understanding  Jesus:  Luke      7

Ac  9:25  Then  the  disciples  took  him  by  night,  &  let  him  down  by  the  wall  in  a  basket.  Ac   9:26  And  when   Saul  was   come   to   Jerusalem,   he   assayed   to   join   himself   to   the  disciples:  but  they  were  all  afraid  of  him,  &  believed  not  that  he  was  a  disciple.      Ac  9:38  And  forasmuch  as  Lydda  was  nigh  to  Joppa,  &  the  disciples  had  heard  that  Peter  was  there,  they  sent  unto  him  two  men,  desiring  him  that  he  would  not  delay  to  come  to  them.  Ac  11:26  And  when  he  had  found  him,  he  brought  him  unto  Antioch.  And  it  came  to  pass,  that  a  whole  year  they  assembled  themselves  with  the  church,  &  taught  much  people.  And  the  disciples  were  called  Christians  first  in  Antioch.    Ac  11:29  Then  the  disciples,  every  man  according  to  his  ability,  determined  to  send  relief  unto  the  brethren  which  dwelt  in  Judaea:  Ac  13:52  And  the  disciples  were  filled  with  joy,  &  with  the  Holy  Ghost.      Ac  14:20  Howbeit,  as  the  disciples  stood  round  about  him,  he  rose  up,  &  came  into  the  city:  &  the  next  day  he  departed  with  Barnabas  to  Derbe.  Ac  14:22  Confirming  the  souls  of  the  disciples,  &  exhorting  them  to  continue  in  the  faith,  &  that  we  must  through  much  tribulation  enter  into  the  kingdom  of  God.  Ac  14:28  And  there  they  abode  long  time  with  the  disciples.      Ac   15:10   Now   therefore   why   tempt   ye   God,   to   put   a   yoke   upon   the   neck   of   the  disciples,  which  neither  our  fathers  nor  we  were  able  to  bear?  Ac   16:1  Then   came  he   to  Derbe  &   Lystra:  &,   behold,   a   certain   disciple  was   there,  named  Timotheus,  the  son  of  a  certain  woman,  which  was  a  Jewess,  &  believed;  but  his  father  was  a  Greek:    Ac  18:23  And  after  he  had  spent  some  time  there,  he  departed,  &  went  over  all  the  country  of  Galatia  &  Phrygia  in  order,  strengthening  all  the  disciples.  Ac   18:27   And   when   he   was   disposed   to   pass   into   Achaia,   the   brethren   wrote,  exhorting  the  disciples  to  receive  him:  who,  when  he  was  come,  helped  them  much  which  had  believed  through  grace:      Ac  19:1  And  it  came  to  pass,  that,  while  Apollos  was  at  Corinth,  Paul  having  passed  through  the  upper  coasts  came  to  Ephesus:  &  finding  certain  disciples,  Ac  19:9  But  when  divers  were  hardened,  &  believed  not,  but  spake  evil  of  that  way  before   the  multitude,  he  departed   from   them,  &   separated   the  disciples,  disputing  daily  in  the  school  of  one  Tyrannus.  Ac   19:30   And   when   Paul   would   have   entered   in   unto   the   people,   the   disciples  suffered  him  not.      Ac   20:1   And   after   the   uproar   was   ceased,   Paul   called   unto   him   the   disciples,   &  embraced  them,  &  departed  for  to  go  into  Macedonia.  Ac   20:7  And   upon   the   first   day   of   the  week,  when   the   disciples   came   together   to  break  bread,  Paul  preached  unto  them,  ready  to  depart  on  the  morrow;  &  continued  his  speech  until  midnight.

Ac  20:30  Also  of  your  own  selves  shall  men  arise,  speaking  perverse  things,  to  draw  away  disciples  after  them.    Ac  21:4  And  finding  disciples,  we  tarried  there  seven  days:  who  said  to  Paul  through  the  Spirit,  that  he  should  not  go  up  to  Jerusalem.  Ac   21:16   There  went  with   us   also   certain   of   the   disciples   of   Caesarea,   &   brought  with  them  one  Mnason  of  Cyprus,  an  old  disciple,  with  whom  we  should  lodge.    Assignment    1. Answer  questions  on  slide  #23  (page  3,  above):

a. When  does  someone  become  a  disciple?  b. What  are  the  criteria?  c. Can  a  person  be  a  Christian  and  not  be  a  disciple?  d. Do  the  following  verses  (pp  3ff)  help  clarify  the  issue  of  being  a  disciple?

How  so?  2. So  what  is  a  disciple,  according  to  Luke?
