Birding is one of the most popular pastimes in North America. Many people feed birds so they can get close-up views of their gorgeous colors and fun antics. But the cost of special seed and feeders adds up quickly! It’s estimated that 60 million people spend close to a billion dollars annually on seed and associated products. There is a better and cheaper way to attract birds!

Native Perennial Flower Sale!

Leave No Child Inside Summit FREE! Saturday, March 10, 2018, 9:30am – 5:00pm

Connect kids with nature and learn how you can help children and families discover the benefits of unstructured outdoor play! This event is a great resource for parents, educators, and health professionals who want to learn more about encouraging children to get outside, as well as the myriad of benefits to spending time in nature. The 7th Annual Miami Valley Leave No Child Inside Summit is going to be at the brand new Main Branch of the Dayton Metro Library, 215 E.3rd St., in Dayton, Ohio. In the morning, pick one of four workshops: Growing up WILD , Green SchoolYard, Raise a Wild Child Book Club, and Getting OUTside Family Café. In the afternoon, Dr. Duby with Wright State University and Dayton Children’s Hospital, will be giving the keynote, ‘Building Brains Through Outdoor Play’, and the OUTstanding Teacher Awards will be announced. Chances to learn about the Montgomery SWCD and other conservation organizations and to network will be

available at different times throughout the day. For more information or to register (which is required) visit http://bit.ly/MVLNCIsummit or or call (937) 275-PARK. Lunch is available for $11, but the Summit is FREE!

Tuesday, June 19th, 2018 from 8:30am - 4:00pm Montgomery SWCD office

We are once again having our Annual Native Perennial Flower Sale! The plants in this sale are all ‘volunteer’ seedlings from the native perennials planted around our office building and grounds. Each year, we take the surplus plants and transplant them into pots to share them with you! The sale is first come, first served, and by donation only. Availability is determined by what grows and gets transplanted.

If you want the best ‘bang for your buck’ in your landscaping for pollinators, birds, butterflies and other wildlife, native plants are what you need! This sale is a great way to get a variety of native plants that thrive in this region.

If you’d like to help with the transplanting or sale, call Kristen Lauer to set up a time. Don’t miss this inexpensive way to add beautiful flowers to your landscape!

Ask us about LAEPP

Scholarships Available!

Are you a farm owner in Montgomery County? Did you know there is a program for preserving your farmland? The Local Agricultural Easement Purchase Program (LAEPP) provides funding to farmland owners for placing an agricultural easement on their property. The easement is a voluntary and legally binding restriction placed on a farm. This means the easement will forever protect your farmland from development. The Montgomery SWCD, a Local Sponsor of this program, would love to work with you to protect your farm. This competitive program pays farmers for their easements. In Montgomery County, nearly 4,000 acres of farmland have been protected since 2002. For more information, please contact Office Secretary Holly Buchanan or visit the Ohio Department of Agriculture website at www.agri.ohio.gov. Look for the ‘Farmland Preservation’ tab under ‘Programs.’

Ohio Forestry & Wildlife Conservation Camp is now ‘Camp Canopy’, and you can live and learn there for a week, on us! We offer a full scholarship (worth $375) to one deserving Montgomery county resident who has completed at least 9th grade and is interested in forestry, conservation and wildlife!

If you are graduating this spring, we also offer a $500 scholarship to a resident who is headed to a two or four year program in Natural Resources Management or an Agricultural Field.

For more details, deadlines, and the applications, go to www.MontgomerySWCD.org, give us a call, or stop by our office. We’re excited to help you on your learning journey!

Trees are for the Birds (and You)! …Continued from Page 1

food, shelter and nesting sites to birds such as Scarlet Tanagers, White-breasted Nuthatches and Baltimore Orioles. Mid Tier trees such as serviceberry and dogwood attract Wood Thrushes for their fruit and as nesting sites. In the Lower tier, northern bayberry and creeping juniper attract Tree Swallows and Eastern Bluebirds. As you plan your tree arrangement, leave some clear spaces between the trees to encourage birds such as American Robin who need open habitats.

You don’t have to have a huge spread with dozens of trees for songbirds. Even a few trees bring delightful results. Viewing songbirds in your yard is educational and fun! Regular visitors will depend on the trees you select. Review the characteristics listed for our sale trees, consult your local forester, or reach out to the Montgomery SWCD for advice!

Using nature’s bird feeders - trees - will leave you with more time to spend watching birds (instead of filling feeders), better provide for the birds, and save you money on birdseed!
