SALTILLO TOURIST GUIDE

Saltillo es la capital del estado de Coahuila

de Zaragoza, México. Se localiza al norte del

país en la región sureste del estado, a 435

km de Piedras Negras, frontera de Coahuila

con Texas; a 300 km de Nuevo Laredo,

Tamaulipas, la frontera más cercana, y a 846

km de la ciudad de México.

Con una altitud de mil 600 metros

sobre el nivel del mar, limita al norte con el

municipio de Ramos Arizpe; al sur con los

estados de San Luis Potosí y Zacatecas; al

oeste con los municipios de General Cepeda

y Parras; al este con el municipio de Arteaga y

el estado de Nuevo León.

El Municipio se divide en 319 localidades,

siendo las principales: Saltillo, La Aurora,

San José de los Cerritos, Derramadero, San

Juan de la Vaquería, Agua Nueva, Carneros,

Rancho Nuevo, La Libertad, Buena vista, La

Angostura y Gómez Farías.

El turismo en SaltilloActualmente Saltillo se posiciona como un

destino de turismo cultural. El patrimonio

tangible e intangible con que cuenta la

ciudad es su mayor atractivo turístico.

Además tiene una vocación industrial que

recibe miles de visitantes al año, generando lo

que se conoce como “Turismo de Negocios”.

SALTILLO

Fundación de SaltilloEl origen del nombre Saltillo se relaciona

con un pequeño salto de agua que brotaba en

un terreno muy cerca del actual Ojo de Agua,

lugar en donde se fundó la Villa de Santiago

del Saltillo.

Es en 1567 cuando llegan los primeros

exploradores al valle de Saltillo al mando

de Alberto del Canto, portugués a quien se

le atribuye la fundación de Saltillo y Luis de

Carvajal, fundador de algunos poblados de

Nuevo León.

La historia oficial menciona que la Villa

de Santiago del Saltillo fue fundada el 25

de julio de 1577 por el capitán Alberto del

Canto, aunque hay algunos datos que indican

que desde 1573 ya se había realizado una

fundación previa.

En el año de 1591 llegan al valle de Saltillo

alrededor de 65 familias tlaxcaltecas, en su

mayoría familias jóvenes, quienes ayudaron

a los españoles a poblar el territorio y a

fortalecer la población, apoyando además en

la lucha en contra de los indios naturales de la

región: los indios huachichiles.

Saltillo is the capital city for the state of Coahuila

de Zaragoza, México. It is located in the northern

part of the country en the southeast region of

the state. It is 435 km. south of the Texas border

with Piedras Negras and 300 km away from the

nearest US Border in Nuevo Laredo, it is 846 km

from the Mexican Capital.

With an elevation of 5300 feet above

sea level our city is bordered on the north by

the city of Ramos Arizpe, on the south by the

states of San Luis Potosi an Zacatecas en to

the east by the town of Arteaga an the state

of Nuevo Leon and to the west by the towns

of Parras and General Cepeda.

Our municipality (The American equivalent

of County) encompasses more than 319 cities

and towns, the main ones being Saltillo, La

Aurora, San Jose de los Cerritos, Derramadero,

San Juan de la Vaqueria, Agua Nueva, Carneros,

Rancho Nuevo, La Libertad, Buena Vista, La

angostura and Gomes Farias to name a few.

Touring SaltilloSaltillo is considered and well positioned as

cultural tourism destination. The tangible

and intangible heritage is in its own right,

the most attractive feature of our city.

The city has a thriving business and

Industrial vocation that receives thousands

of visitors yearly, generating a busy workflow

of what we call “business tourism”.

UBICACIÓN DEL MUNICIPIO DE SALTILLO EN COAHUILA

The Birth of SaltilloSaltillo is a diminutive Spanish word that

means “Spring” the Portuguese explorers to

which the founding of Saltillo is attributed to

are Alberto del Canto and Luis de Carvajal who

also founded other townships in the state of

Nuevo Leon. They named Saltillo for the

rather large water spring they encountered

on their arrival on this valley. The spring was

very near the current Villa de Santiago Spring

is located.

Our official records mention that The

Villa of Santiago was founded on juli 25th

of the year 1577 by Alberto del Canto, other

historians speculate based on other records

that the villa was founded in 1573.

In 1591 sixty five Tlaxcaltecan Indian

families came to live in the Valley, mostly

young couples, they were allowed by Spanish

families to be given land and water rights

with the idea of reinforcing the population

and also the task of fighting and conquering

the unruly Chichimeca Indian tribes.

Iconos saltillensesEn Saltillo existen símbolos culturales tangibles

e intangibles que definen e identifican a la

ciudad y sus pobladores, incluso algunos de

ellos son mundialmente famosos.

Sarape de Saltillo: El Sarape es una prenda tradicional mexicana

tejida en lana, es herencia de una mezcla

española e indígena y llegó a Saltillo a

través de los pobladores tlaxcaltecas. Aquí la

prenda tomó características diferentes, se le

añadieron formas y nuevos detalles, sus vivos

colores en degradado y el diamante dentado

en la parte central lo distinguen como el

Sarape de Saltillo.

Catedral de Santiago: La Catedral de Saltillo representa el orgullo

saltillense debido a su belleza y originalidad

arquitectónica. Además lleva implícita las

tradiciones religiosas y culturales de los

saltillenses.

Pan de Pulque: El pan de pulque forma parte de las

tradiciones gastronómicas de Saltillo, su

origen proviene también de los tlaxcaltecas,

quienes ya dominaban la elaboración del

pan y del pulque desde mucho antes de su

llegada a tierras norteñas.

Corrido de Rosita Alvírez: Particularmente en Saltillo uno de los

corridos más conocidos es el de Rosita

Alvírez, que popularizó el cantante norteño

Piporro; sin embargo, esta pieza ya se

escuchaba desde tiempo atrás.

Saltillo Icons Fairs and Festivities

There are cultural simbols that define and

identifiy Saltillo and its people.

The Saltillo Sarape The Sarape is a woven blanket (if it had a slit

in the middle it became a poncho) done in

a treadle loom, since the 1700 the Saltillo

Sarape became the highest quality new

world weave and a highly prized, sought

after item. It was woven by Mexican Indians

on Spanish treadle looms. The qualities

that distinguished such craftsmanship were

de delicate fading colors, diamond centers,

sometime made of fine silk threads.

The Santiago CathedralThe crown jewel of our city it is our pride for

its beautiful and original architecture unusual

for a northern México church. Its religious and

cultural connotations are implicit in every

square foot of the building.

Pulque BreadOne of Saltillo’s lasting traditions, pulque,

a beer like drink made from a local cactus

plant was used as a substitute for yeast in the

baking of this bread, giving it a very distinct

and delicious flavor, the technique was

dominated by the Tlaxcalteca Indians.

Corrido de Rosita Alvires (narrative folk song for Rosita Alvires)This song is famous throughout Latin America, sung by a folk singer named Pipporro, it told the story of a beautiful girl from a Saltillo neighborhood, that dejected an invitation to dance… do ask a local for the rest of the story.

The busy activity of our oldest part of town resides among many on its more than 20 museums, art galleries and cultural centers dedicated to many different artistic expressions, history and local traditions.

This same cultural lifestyle manifest itself Saltillo’s festive nightlife, because when the museums light are off and their doors locked, the bars, restaurants, cafes and old school cantinas open theirs to give

La zona norte de la ciudad, es la parte moderna de Saltillo, en ella encontrarás centros comerciales, restaurantes, bares y hoteles.

The Villa de Santiago del Saltillo was born from a small water spring that the founding fathers called the “little spring”, Salto translates to spring, a small spring is a Saltillo. This water spring still runs fresh water after 400 years and it gave our city its name. Some of this areas main attraction is the chapel and a religious complex dedicated to the Holy Christ of the Water Spring.

This area is one of the most traditional holy places in the city, many native dances like the Tlaxcaltecan Matachin Dance are preformed every second Sunday in September.

The Ojo de Agua area has one of the most beautiful scenic views of the city called the Plaza México, historical site also known and the “Mirador de Saltillo”, The Lookout.

The city is guarded on the south by the vast and beautiful Zapaliname Mountains, this mountain range is protected, being the biggest resource of water for our region, it is also a wooded area with impressive canyons, ravines and trails, that encourage many visitors that enjoy ecotourism and adventure activities, and its only 15 minutes away from town.

En tiempos de la colonia, el antiguo pueblo de San Esteban de la Nueva Tlaxcala se instaló al lado poniente de la villa de Santiago de Saltillo. Por esta razón en este sector de la ciudad aún se encuentran vestigios culturales de la tradición tlaxcalteca.

El Merendero de Saltillo y Pan Mena son dos tradicionales panaderías saltillenses.• Visita el Santuario de Guadalupe, original templo de estilo neogótico construido en cantera negra, a principios del siglo XX, dedicado a la Virgen de Guadalupe.• Uno de los más antiguos y bellos panteones de Saltillo se localiza también en el poniente de la ciudad, el Panteón Santiago. En su interior podemos encontrar admirable arquitectura funeraria de principios de siglo XX, dedicada a grandes personajes saltillenses.

During Colonial times, the Indian pueblo of San Esteban de la Nueva Tlaxcala, it was built on the western side of the Villa de Santiago del Saltillo. For this reason, this well defined side of the city preserves its tlaxcaltecan heritage, like the markets and one of the most iconic traditions Pan de Pulque bakeries, still using the original indigenous recipes that have been passed down for generations.

On this side of town you can also find another beautiful church, called the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Guadalupe, a very original neo-gothic temple built with black limestone, dedicated to our Virgin Marie of Guadalupe; as a natural scenic back stage, the Cerro del Pueblo “Hill of The People”.

One of the oldest and most beautiful cemeteries is also located in western Saltillo, a visit to this cemetery will show you some of the most interesting early 20th century funeral architecture dedicated to the memory of some of Saltillo’s most important citizens that defined our culture.

CATEDRAL DE SANTIAGOVerdadera joya arquitectónica dedicada al

Apóstol Santiago el Mayor. Edificada en

1745, inicia su construcción como parroquia

para después, en 1891, erigirse como la

Catedral de Saltillo conjuntando varios

estilos arquitectónicos como el barroco, el

churrigueresco y el neoclásico. Es el edificio

más representativo de Saltillo. En el interior

sobresalen sus retablos, así como el frontal

de plata que se encuentra en el altar de San

José, pieza del siglo XVIII que participó en la

exposición “México, Esplendores de Treinta

Siglos”, que recorrió EUA y México durante

tres años.

A true architectural gem, dedicated to Apostle

Santiago de elder. It was built in 1745, it started

out as a parish and then in the year of 1891 it

was built up to a Saltillo Cathedral status. It

combines diferent arhitectual styles like,

baroque, neoclassic and churriguresq, it is by far

Saltillos most distinctive building. Inside you

can enjoy frescoes and other retables as well

as the silver work done by the altar of San Jose,

an XVII century work of art and a main piece of

the world exhibition “Mexico 30 Centurys of

Splendor” that toured the US and México for

three years.

construye en 1592 al fundarse el poblado

San Esteban de la Nueva Tlaxcala, habitado

por los tlaxcaltecas. Es el templo más

antiguo de Saltillo.

SANTO CRISTO DEL OJO DE AGUAFue en este lugar donde hace más de 400

años nació Saltillo. La Iglesia aún conserva

su atrio en honor al Ojo de Agua donde se

fundó la Villa de Saltillo en 1577, así como su

pequeño manantial. Las personas devotas

acuden a adorar al Santo Cristo y los turistas

a visitar el lugar gracias a su arquitectura y

valor histórico, ya que el barrio del Ojo de

Agua aún conserva muchos aspectos de los

asentamientos coloniales.

SAN JUAN NEPOMUCENOTemplo jesuita construido en el siglo XIX. En

su fachada de estilo neoclásico sobresalen

sus torres inconclusas y su bella cúpula con

ventanales. En su interior resguarda óleos

del padre Gonzalo Carrasco, esculturas

evangélicas, y un mural de la vida de San Juan.

ARTEAGAA 20 minutos al oriente de Saltillo, se ubica el bello Pueblo Mágico de Arteaga. En él podrás

disfrutar de las plazas y de la arquitectura vernácula de sus casas. Un rasgo característico de

este pueblo son sus calles arboladas y empedradas por las cuales corre una bella acequia. Los

domingos se instala una tradicional feria artesanal y de comida en torno a la Alameda.

GENERAL CEPEDAForma parte de la región sureste del estado de Coahuila, se ubica a 70 km de la ciudad de

Saltillo. Es una zona predominantemente desértica y de grandes hallazgos paleontológicos

y arqueológicos. En sus alrededores se han encontrado una gran cantidad de fósiles de

dinosaurios pertenecientes al periodo cretácico superior, y una gran cantidad de grabados en

piedra con aproximadamente 4 mil años de antigüedad, vestigio de la presencia de los antiguos

pobladores de Coahuila.

El poblado destaca por su arquitectura colonial norestense, sus arboladas plazas y el casco de la

antigua hacienda de Patos, que ahora es la Presidencia Municipal.

La Sierra de Zapalinamé, ubicada en el

municipio de Saltillo, es una ramificación de

la Sierra Madre Oriental. Su elevación varía

desde los 1590 msnm., hasta los 3,140 msnm.

Cuenta con una extensa Zona Sujeta a

Conservación Ecológica debido a que es

la principal fuente proveedora de agua de

Saltillo; además alberga una gran diversidad

de especies de flora y fauna, algunas de

ellas endémicas o en estatus de riesgo. Su

vegetación comprende desde matorrales

desérticos hasta bosques de pino y abeto.

Zapalinamé posee atributos arqueológicos,

históricos y culturales, que hacen de ella un

enorme tesoro.

En la Sierra de Zapalinamé, justo en el

Cañón de San Lorenzo, a sólo 15 minutos de

Saltillo se pueden desarrollar actividades de

ecoturismo y de turismo de aventura.

The Zapaliname Mountain Range, is located

within Saltillo’s city limits, it branches down

from the Sierra Madre, the altitude range

starts at 5000 ft ASL. To 10300 ft. ASL. The

vast majority falls under a Protected National

Conservation Park, it captures most of the

water supply for the region, and it is home

to many plant and animal species, some of

them are only found in this mountain range

and are in risk of extinction. Its flora includes

desert plants and cacti to forest pines and firs.

Zapaliname also possesses many historical

and cultural attributes that make it one of

the most important sites for our visitors and

inhabitants alike. On the Sierra, many activities

like trekking, climbing and rappelling as well

as other adventure and ecotourism activities

can be practiced.

cañón. El área tiene hermosos paisajes y

contrastes en su cambio de vegetación, y

excelentes lugares para días de campo o para

The area has beautiful landscapes and marked

vegetation contrasts, a great place for a day

trip picnic or overnight camping trip. This trek

En Zapalinamé existen varias zonas y más

de 25 rutas para escalar, entre boulders y

paredes desde 6 hasta 130 metros de altura

y con diferente nivel de dificultad. Podrás

encontrar rutas para practicar escalada estilo

deportivo, tradicional o yo-yo.

At Zapaliname there are more than 25 maped

routes to climb. Between boulders and walls

you can find climbs starting at 20 feet to 450

feet with different difficulty grade ratings

from I to IV

ESCALADA EN ROCA / TREKKING

PANORÁMICATambién conocido como “Burreros”, este

recorrido transcurre entre dos murallas de

roca caliza blanca y amarilla. Se le dio el

nombre de la Panorámica ya que desde su

parte alta se aprecia una gran y extensa área

del cañón de San Lorenzo. En algunas partes

es necesario es escalar.

Also known as the “Burreros” this path take

you between two huge rock walls. It is know

as a “Panoramic” because of the beautiful

vistas and scenic views you can see from the

tops. This trek does have a higher level of

difficulty and some climbing is required.

EL PENITENTEEs el lugar más elevado de toda el Área Natural

Protegida Zapalinamé, en él encontrarás

bosque alto de pino y lugares planos que te

invitarán a descansar.

This is the highest peak in all the protected

area, here you will find a forest of tall pine and

many flat areas or “mesas” that will invite you

CAÑON DE BALCONESEs un cañón bastante espectacular y

amigable. Su nombre es debido a que en

la salida de cada rapel es como estar en un

hermoso balcón. Cuenta con 6 rapeles con

alturas entre 15m a 30m.

La Sierra de Zapalinamé cuenta con

cuatro cuevas donde se puede practicar el

espeleismo.

• La Cueva del Centauro: Tiene una

profundidad de 45 metros y está ubicada en

el borde de una meseta intermedia. Cuenta

con dos entradas y desembocan en un gran

salón de forma cuadrada.

• Cueva El Encinillo: Se ubica cerca de

CAÑON EL NIÑOEl cañón El Niño es el más técnico y vertical

de Coahuila, para llegar a él se requiere de

una marcha de 45 minutos. Consiste en llegar

a seis rapeles sucesivos con alturadesde los

12 hasta los 35 metros.

• La Marimba Cavern: It has a 60 foot vertical

drop and 360 feet horizontal depth, this is the

most beutiful cave because of its abundant

calcium sediment formations.

• Abra del Picacho Cave: It is a 130 feet deep,

you can access the cave trough a narrow

horizontal gap in the Picacho peak.
